I loved my Whole 30 experience, and I didn't end up spending any more money than usual. I kept things simple - I roasted sheet pans of chicken drumsticks and mixed vegetables, and that would be my lunch and dinner on most days. Of course I threw in some other recipes here and there, but for the most part I kept it inexpensive and really simple. I would change up the vegetables and seasonings each time I roasted a pan, and that was my variety. For breakfast, I would saute onion, roma tomatoes, spinach, and Italian seasoning, then add two scrambled eggs to make a frittata. I never seemed to get tired of it, for some reason. I drank water and black coffee. I made smoothies from frozen fruits. I found that it was better to spend my money on fruits and vegetables than on fast food, bread, sweets, and dairy products. I also have Hashimoto's disease, and never felt "Tiger blood." But I also didn't get any mood swings like you describe. I felt light and clean, though. Clear headed. Not tired. So I guess the experience is unique to every person! 😊

When most start a new diet they go pretty crazy with buying things for new recipes, thinking about new things to try, obsess a lot about the food... but simple is best. It's also a mental reset. You have to let go of the idea that you need certain foods to be happy. Attachment to food is a huge problem for many people especially here in the west where we are flooded with abundance.

Everything she's talking about IS addressed in the books "It Starts With Food" and "Whole30." And yes, it IS all about prep, because that's how people eat healthy to begin with even when they're not doing a Whole30. And the worse you eat, the harder it is because YES you will have withdrawals. Whole30 IS about learning about yourself--your habit, your emotional eating tendencies, what you rely on to feel full (in my case dairy). So if she was eating rice, pasta, and bread to feel full, then that was something she learned and she needed to figure out a different meal template to keep her full, which was addressed in the book. And the reintroduction is covered extensively in the book. The prep for a Whole30 is not just shopping, it's reading through all the materials, sometimes more than once, to truly understand the program.

mary willick hi Mary! I mainly purchased my produce and proteins (chicken, beef, etc) from Aldi. I always make sure I have spinach, blueberries, strawberries, tangerines, asparagus, carrots, avocados, bell peppers, mushrooms, almonds and eggs. I also found a lot of great compliant salad dressings on Pinterest and was able to find the ingredients at Aldi! Pinterest has really helped me to add variety to my meals and allows me to create tons of meals without having to go out and buy specific ingredients. I get most of my spices and cooking oils from Aldi as well. Good luck to you! I have one week left and am seeing wonderful results and feeling great. I think the key is finding what works for your body since everyone is different! Hope this helped!

I also have Hashimoto’s and am an emotional eater. This was my 2nd Whole30 and I am so much healthier. My hair isn’t falling out (HUGE, because for years I’ve thought I might have to buy a good wig), my skin looks better, I’ve slimmed down some, and my aches and pains are so much better. Also, my taste buds have come back; I’m retraining them to like Whole30 sauces (no sugar) and different foods. I never would have eaten a fig, but it tasted similar to a Fig Newton! I used to eat and eat sugar, and that’s all I could taste. It’s good to taste food now. That other stuff I ate (sugar or spicy chips) isn’t really food. It’s poison. Thanks for the great video!

I don't know what was so expensive. Protein, fruit, veggies, fat? I have continued on whole 30 and made it a lifestyle change. I still only eat proteins, fruit, veggies, and fats. I love being able to have potatoes and sweet potatoes. When I feel like it, I sometimes have rice or pastas made from chickpeas. I also can tolerate legumes. But no dairy, no bread, no white flour, no sugar, no alcohol. Done this for a year and have lost 140 lbs eating whole foods.

Whole30 was fine for the budget of my wife and I. We did meal prep with friends for a lot of it, and afterwords just did it ourselves. I made a chili and a special kind of salad I could easily assemble. Then just grab some go-to snacks and drinks. If you want to make a different meal every day, sure, maybe, but that could be excessive. Coconut aminos though...just don’t get the ridiculously expensive bacon otherwise. Try Daniel Plan. I’m in the 2nd week of no caffeine. I’ve stopped having headaches at least. Daniel Plan is also great to incorporate faith.
@TheWonderLuster5 жыл бұрын
You gave up caffeine??! You're a rockstar! (I say this as I sip my coffee) Yes, next time I'm going to skip the expensive bacon. It wasn't really a thing I loved and it was really pricey. I think we only ate out 1-2 times in the whole month, but it was still pricey for us. I don't have a costco card, but I think there are ways to cut costs..we just weren't able to our first go round.
@andrewlaverghetta7155 жыл бұрын
The Wonder Luster I think the cost wasn’t as high as it could have been because we made a big batch of 2 or 3 things to last for the two of us through the week, plus fruit. Maybe it was more than I thought, but it wasn’t much more than our usual grocery bill. I don’t know if I said it correctly before but our meal prep was also a swap with 2 other couples, so we also had a little variety with that. Having a group is also a great way to do it, meeting weekly and having a private Facebook group to chat in and post recipes. Yeah, that caffeine wasn’t fun the first couple days. I had just had been gifted a nice manual coffee grinder and French press at Christmas too. I’ll definitely go back to it after though. I’ve been sweetening it a little with honey until this newest Daniel Plan started. I drink water, a little bit of fruit juice when I need it, and I really enjoy sparkling water, flavored though.
@danielallmon34005 жыл бұрын
If your grocery bill doubled, this means you are eating a lot of rice, bread, pasta, and other processed foods. If you already eat a ton of fruit and vegetables this will be the same grocery bill. I also buy meat at Sams Club, cut it into servings, and vacuum pack it for the next couple weeks. Loved this diet. Did it for 90 days. Yes, the first 5-7 days are tough. After about 21 days, you really stop craving snacks, sugar rushes, and even caffeine. You think you can't live without these thigns, but after eating this clean, you don't need stimulus in your diet.
@jacquelinefreymuth4355 жыл бұрын
My experience was amazing! My grocery bill went down, but I also food prepped and ate the same meals, keeping it simple for the week and then moving onto a new set of recipes. Sorry you had a bad experience. I think you should give it another go, pick 4-5 recipes to rotate for breakfast, lunch and dinner and make those ahead of time so you can grab and eat and see if that will work better. I also recommend shopping at a Trader Joes and Costco. Whole 30 is strict but worth it!

Thanks for the heads up on some of these points! Also, thanks for being so candid about your autoimmune condition. I've had thyroid problems in the the past and my mom suffered from crippling fibromyalgia (an autoimmune disease that's considered incurable) for years. We both saw a naturopathic doctor who specialized in NAET and now we are both COMPLETELY FREE from those diseases. Seriously. After I recovered, I went on a similar "reset diet" for about 8 months and I totally had full-time tiger blood after the first 4-5 weeks of detox! It was awesome. Anyway, if you're open to trying it, I'd encourage you to do some research and talk to an NAET certified doctor about your condition. With the right help, your body can probably heal itself! Hi, I've been researching Whole 30 of late and contemplating doing it for my own health, energy level and arthritic joint pains as well as for my sweetheart, who is almost a quadraplegic from progressive MS. There are certain "traditions" we have, including coffee & a bite of something sweet, or going out which are important to us due to the mobility issues ruling out most recreational activities. I really appreciate you sharing the "difficult" things because I was considering maybe this is too much change for us and a better approach would be something more gradual. It seems that autoimmune issues seem to magnify whatever kinds of symptoms we have, so it takes more time for adjustments when there's autoimmune issues in the mix.

The Whole 30 is more of a challenge the first time around. I've done it three times and currently doing it now. The first time I think I spent more on things Id never buy now, such as RX bars, Lara bars, Epic Bars. I shop mostly at Trader Joes and spend around 100 per week for my daughter and I (she is doing it as well). I think many go into a panic about the change and over purchase but having done this a few times, I can say it is totally possible to do on a budget. Spending less on snack foods cuts a huge amount from my budget. I do not eat out or get Starbucks daily. There is really no price for well being and Id rather see my money go to healthy eating rather than paying for medication or dr visits.

My grocery bill actually went down maybe because I wasn't buying alcohol lol! I ate a lot of cauliflower and zucchini instead of pasta or rice and found it was a great substitute. My energy level was awesome. I also have a histamine intolerance so alcohol and a diet heavy in carbohydrates is super bad for me (causes my body to over produce anti-inflamatory hormones). I think by big staples were almond butter, eggs, sweet potatoes, zucchini, cauliflower, broccoli.

It's hard when you are not used to eating healthy and then throwing yourself into a elimination diet. I found that cutting back on sugar, progressively and making some swaps in your normal diet. Such as less processed foods, restaurant food, carb heavy meals. I've done this for a while so when I did Whole30, it was relatively close to how I had been doing things. I did miss whole grains and legumes and I didn't see the benefit of cutting those out. I was happy to completely cut out sugar and refined flour, it did help me reset my sugar tolerance. I think most of it is a mindset and our attachment to food. There are also some legitimate addictions that will be good to acknowledge but you can break those. Because you have an addiction to sugar or to most refined carbs doesn't mean it's the way you are and you can scale way back to manage that. The Whole30 diet is interesting to those that what you draw attention to their body and how they've been eating but really it's about living a lifestyle of healthy choices. Everyone knows that but somehow we keep getting on quick fix diets and severe elimination and wonder why it fails. Take the information from this and recognize how we have been nourishing our body and what we need to do to move forward.

We also have done Daniel Plan twice which is similar but doesn’t cut legumes but does cut caffeine. It’s really about changing how you do things in my mind. You just get in the habit of knowing what to do, keeping recipes and all that stuff. Our shopping habits have changed so much since that month. We used to weave back and forth down the aisles of the grocery store, but aside from a few things, we not really just go back to eggs, down by the meats, and to produce. By the way, ghee is nasty. Nobody needs that stuff.

My lunches were leftover dinner but put over some greens (so like if I had turkey burgers, I’d take a leftover one and crumble it up over a bed of spinach) and have it as a salad with some other veggies and homemade ranch, and an apple. If I didn’t have leftovers, I’d use canned chicken, tuna, or two boiled eggs. And dinner was a lot of crockpot roasts, chicken, soups, or roasted veggies.

You are so funny! I like your concept of grace. We all expect ourselves to be perfect. But it isn't worth the stress. Just do your best! I have Hashimoto's too and it does suck but doing your best is better than not even trying! Great video!

I have had several autoimmune diseases for 20 years. I don't think many of us will get "Tiger Blood".. I don't do Whole30 but I wouldn't blame low energy on any plan..it's just a symptom of a bad immune system.
@TheWonderLuster5 жыл бұрын
Well I felt fine, then I felt like death- I think it was withdrawal from all the gluten and sugar I had been eating so my body went into withdrawal and I felt like I had the flu, achy all over and fatigued pretty hard. I think any time you quit sugar at a hard stop, you'll feel like poop the first few days. That was me :) Not saying everyone will, but I felt horrible for a really long time after starting.

Gluten is now gone for good. Since I have Hashimoto's, it's likely I have Celiac and when I eat it I don't feel great, so I've taken it out completely...which can be a bummer since I loved bread!

Thanks for this candid review! I have Hashimoto's & RA (one autoimmune disorder makes you susceptible to others...yay). I plan on giving it a go because I can tell gluten is causing flare ups with the RA. May I recommend two bloggers: Downshiftology and Lilsipper. Both have cost conscious recipes that are actually delicious. All the best to you in your journey!

Thanks for sharing your recommendations Rupal! I'm always looking for new content to help me live healthier with my Hashi's! I hope your RA feels a bit better, keep me posted on your progress. I watched the whole video, and she has some great idea among the comments of frustration. I have epilepsy (minor and I'm on and stayed on medication) and did not find this hard. I had clearer thinking, more energy in the first few weeks. I did gardening projects, including using a roto tiller! and found that I had plenty of energy to accomplish these tough projects. I do not drink alcohol, so that was not a problem. I will say that I eat well to begin with, since i do not eat gluten and am low on dairy intake. I did allow myself hummus.I miss the honey in my tea, my oat granola bars ( I am mostly gf...oats do not bother me) and craisins, my snack foods. I think I'll start to add those slowly and not just munch on them several times a day. The cost was not a problem for me as I already eat a lot of veges and fruit ..gf on a shoe string! I did find grilling my vegetables tasty and it helped balance the lack of sugar and grains. I was glad I could still have meat on whole thirty, but I have been light in the meat department all along. I am married and have three kids, two teens and one who is 22. They eat what they want. Our grocery bill for the 5 of us rarely goes over $180 to $200 a week. I will add things back slowly, but probably not wait several days, as my eating habits were mostly fine before I started this. I will say it took me many years to get to great eating habits, so this is just part of the journey

Great video... I've done 4 rounds of Whole 30. It is very expensive, and honestly, I have NEVER experienced tiger blood. But, that being said... I continue to do rounds throughout the year as a reset, and as a challenge. AND, the more rounds you do, the easier the transition is... (but meal prep doesn't get any faster... hahaha!)
@TheWonderLuster5 жыл бұрын
This made me giggle, that darn meal prep! I hope someday we both find tiger blood!
@andrewlaverghetta7155 жыл бұрын
My wife and I have been doing meal prep for over a year now from when we did Whole30 and we’re more or less pros at it, haha! It helps that I don’t mind having the same thing often. We aren’t doing it anymore, but we are doing the Daniel Plan. My main stuff includes a banana and hard boiled eggs in the morning, chili and carrots for lunch, and a carnitas salad for dinner. Sometimes it switches lunch and dinner if I have a day off work or on the weekends. We basically don’t buy anything that has added sugar and only add honey as a sweetener for coffee or teas we have at home.

This is really interesting! I've been doing vegan Whole30, as I lead a plant based lifestyle normally AND I am an intermittent faster which I have maintained throughout my time with Whole30. I can't relate to your experience and it's so interesting how everyone's experiences can be so different. My body has felt incredible, and if anything, I have been more mentally clear, more energetic and have been having way better sleeps too! Also, I haven't noticed an increase in my grocery bills, just that I am replacing any non Whole30 friendly foods that I was buying before with larger quantities of fruits, veg, nuts, seeds, etc.
@faithyoung58794 жыл бұрын
I agree that it's expensive. My husband and I eat pretty healthy as it is, but we couldn't eat our normal snacky foods, and my husband isn't a fruit eater, which results in buying nuts, and a lot of them. I'm trying to keep everything else pretty simple, but it still adds up! I also make sure I have the week planned of meals. We are almost one week in, wish us luck!
@TheWonderLuster4 жыл бұрын
I think if we did it again there would be ways to save money- but honestly it was a challenge at first. You're right- the snacks are probably what breaks the bank...RX bars and all that add up!
@jamie5mauser4 жыл бұрын
You'd do better going AIP without all the nightshades. And not enough salt will cause a lot of the symptoms you had too

Hi Rin! It was expensive for my partner and I when we did it- but I'm sure it doesn't have to be if you get creative. I think next time I will have better ways to cut costs...but this time it was pricey. Would love your tips to keep costs down so I can learn!
@meaganbee15 жыл бұрын
You will definitely need to be more creative! My grocery bill has been the same or less since we started. Use things like spaghetti squash or cauliflower rice. One head of fresh cauliflower is like 8 portions! I also live for my instant pot for meal prepping on Sundays!

my grocery bill while being a vegetarian is low as well. Frozen vegetables are an option, as well as canned veggies. pre-mixed seasonings save on money instead of buying individual seasonings. Depending on your weight and toxicity level in your body, results will vary. Results are subjective. BUT going on the diet will only help you. Do not overthink your grocery list. For example for Breakfast make an omelet. For lunch, have your favorite salad (with meat, if you into those type of things lmaooo), and dinner roasted veggies, salad and (meat if it's necessary... I guess) Everybody has different situations health-wise, but what does not have to be hard is your grocery list. And BTW as a vegetarian, I am giving suggestions to you meat eaters, so don't come for me, because I could care less that you choose to eat meat, so don't bother me about choosing not too. hahahaha.

I think we just need to remember that Whole30 is a different experience for everyone. Like she said, we are challenging everything in our lives during the Whole30. I really think the point of this was just to give people a a bit of a perspective, something a little more real and a little less selling-this-to-You kind of mentality.

Expensive - YEP! I wish I could say that I stuck to veggies and staples like chicken. But I got tired of them eventually moved to things like kombucha and fancy mayo. Which turned up to be awesome. I found a lot of food that are no staples (and it sucks that theyre expensive). I snack too much on whole30. Towards the end of it, things normalized and I stuck to almost eating 1x a day. I found that earibg carbs and rice made .e hungrier to some reason. Tiger blood: not really, but I rarely felt sleepy. I actually couldnt sleep either. 3 hours of sleep was good, and I subsisted on tea. Im on reintroduction now, and lemme tell you, all the food I thought I missed was making me bloat, or making me feel lethargic. Brain fog was a very real thing after too. Im prolly going back to the program but doing it 6 days a week.

Thinking of trying a variation of this but there is a few things I don’t agree with and a few things that they ask manly I think if you make a mistake instead of going back to day one pick your self up and keep swimming. I also eat dinner with my family who will not be eating whole 30 so dinner would just be as close to whole 30 as possible. But at this point for me its more about a better relationship with food

@TheWonderLuster5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer, at the time I was cooking for two and while I don't remember the total I remember it was just about double. I think there are smarter ways to keep costs lower- like avoiding "compliant" but pricey fancy snacks or focusing on using frozen veggies instead of fresh, shopping in season or in bulk- but ya, it was a lot for us. I'm now single, so my grocery bill is way better on Whole30.

If i understood correctly, cut out bread starches and sweets. Ok so how is that new in dieting? Anyone can do that. Oh and dairy and caffeine and alcohol. So the point isnt to lose weight it is to determine what(if any) foods your body has a negative reaction to. This all seems common sence to me. We dont need a fad to help us know this we just experiment with food without all that. I was going to try it but now i dont think so. So thank you for sharing. Good success to those of you that are doing it.
