I have been using a baratza sette 270 for over 2 years now as my everyday grinder. I think the best thing with the grinder is baratza themselves. They are the best company I have ever had to deal with. They do not want their grinders to be thrown out. They support their product without question. They have sent me parts and instructions and support whenever required. Baratza is an Amazing company to deal with

The 30 is good, buy the adjustment assembly for the 270 and you get most of the benefits of the 270.

The noise level has gone down significantly in some of the redesigns. They continue to change the models throughout their life. I just had a gearbox go out on me in my 270 and Baratza mailed out a new gearbox and motor (for free btw) and the new one is easily 1/2 as loud as the old one ever was. They've done some pretty amazing tweaks this thing lately.

Excellent vid...well done. Have had a 270 for a few years and love the machine ... a real compliment to my Rocket Giotto espresso machine. Fluffy grinds and very little retention...highly recommend, enjoy.

On your reccomendation I purchased a Sette 270. Last year and have enjoyed the results. I haven't used it for a couple of months, I tend to drink ice cofee in the warm months. .. Now that it is cold again I am back to drinking esperesso. I am currently having a problem with my grind. No matter what setting (I have turned the adjustment to full fine) I use, when I grind 18grams it takes about 8.5 seconds to produce. When I pull an espresso shot the coffee comes out way too fast, filling an entire 8oz. cup in about 15 seconds. I have adjusted the coarseness settings and it doesn't seem to matter. I spent an hour and went through a pound of coffee beans and still have not been able to figure out what is going on. .. -Michael

Hi Michael, Happy to hear you have enjoyed the results. Sounds like your Sette may be in need of shimming. In the box with your grinder were 2 metal shims. 1 or both of those should be installed after break in of the grinder. Here's a video showing the quick and easy shim install process: kzbin.info/www/bejne/baSloX2ZqKtqY5Y Each shim is about the same as 3 macro steps to finer. 8.5 seconds to grind 18g is a little long. At espresso size you should get in the neighborhood of 4g/s. Marc

Thanks for the in depth comparison. I have a question: Can I leave the 270 empty and weigh the whole beans and then run them through the grinder? I have half a dozen roasts available at any one time and would like the convenience of just dropping pre-weighed whole beans into the hopper. As I think about this, I guess, I need to weigh some whole beans and see if I can be consistent enough considering that the bean size might not allow me to hold a specific weight.

Yes you can. The Sette grinders have very low retention. After initial grind of your dose run start and stop 1 or 2 times and retention is typically under .5 grams

I currently have a Breville Infuser with a Bodum Bistro burr grinder and am looking to upgrade my grinder. I've basically got my choices down between the Sette 30 and 270 (however, the 30 is closer to my budget, without stretching to the 270). For my machine, would I be fine with getting the Sette 30 for use with the pressurized baskets and maybe getting the 270 fine adjustment assembly later to use with the non-pressurized baskets? I can go without the 3 presets and the nicer arms I think. Also, if I were to upgrade my machine down the road to something like Breville Dual Boiler, would the 30 (with the 270 assembly) or the 270 as is work well with that machine? Hey Marc!! I recently got a Gaggia Classic and I am loving it. I have had a Capresso Infinity Burr grinder for a while now, and it's been doing okay, but I think it's time that I get a proper grinder to really help me dial in my shots. I'm looking at the Baratza Sette 30 vs. Breville Smart Grinder Pro. They are both about the same price. It seems like Baratza is very good quality. But for the same price point I kind of like the amount of fine adjustments from the Breville Smart Grinder Pro. Any thoughts on comparing these two grinders? Which would you recommend for a guy just getting started in the espresso world? Thanks so much!!!

Brent Ehresman Hi, if those were my 2 choices no question I’d go with the Sette 30. The BSGP is slow and clumpy at espresso grind sizes. The Sette 30 has beautiful fluffy grinds. Not the perfect espresso grinder by a long shot but far better. Also upgradable to 270 grind size control for about $90. Marc

Hey Mark, I am thinking about upgrading my grinder as I've got a new La Marzocco gs3 MP at home. Of course don't have the time to pull more than 6-7 Shots per day. Still struggeling about the best choice: Baratza Sette 270wi, Atom speciality 65, Rocket fausto, Mazzer mini. The Baratza compared to this other grinders have smaller burrs. What's the impact of burr's size on my shots? Is it really better to have bigger burrs? I know that the Baratza 270wi has almost zero retention compared to others competitors. (However not a big concern for me). many thanks in advice SB

Hi SB, Thanks for the question. Congrats on the GS3! To get the most out of your GS3 I recommend weighing your coffee doses. The 270Wi is wonderful for that or you could go with another grinder and an something like an Acaia scale with portafilter plate. In general, bigger burrs are better but it's hard to quantify when you get to a point of diminishing returns of burr size vs. grind quality. One thing I like with the 270Wi is a very fluffy and well distributed grind. I could argue those qualities offset the somewhat undefinable increase in grind quality of a larger burr set. With good distribution there's less chance of channeling and more consistent shots. Do understand the Sette is rather plasticky. Not the same build quality as the Eureka grinders (Rocket Fausto is made by Eureka). I fully expect the Eureka grinders will be grinding happily away a decade from now. The Sette might be as well but I'm less confident. The Eureka grinders are time based but are remarkably consistent in weight output dose to dose. Personally I'm not a fan of the Mazzer Mini. No issue with the grind it's just a PITA to get into the grinding chamber for cleaning and grind size adjustment threads get gummed up with coffee dust and oils making fine adjustment jumpy at times. I drink primarily french press with an occassional espresso. What would you recommend for a grinder? the Baratza 270 or I was looking at the Eureka grinders(lots of choices). I was thinking Eureka because they have larger burrs.

Hi Steve, If doing mostly French press I advise against the Sette grinders. Unless you equip with Baratza's BG (brew grind) burr option you're likely to get a lot of fines at press grind size so you may get mucky cups plus over-extraction. And, the BG burr will compromise espresso grind quality. You might have a look at the Baratza Encore ESP: www.wholelattelove.com/products/baratza-encore-esp-coffee-and-espresso-grinder-white It's designed for multi-purpose grinding with fine precision in the espresso grind size range. There are much better espresso grinders but if you're occasional espresso then it may be all you need and will do well for press grinding. It is an appliance grade product so not the same build quality as the machine grade Eureka grinders. Hi Mark - The manual for the 270Wi grinder says it's necessary to recalibrate the machine after grinding the first few pounds. RECALIBRATING/SHIMMING THE CONE BURR: After the first few pounds of coffee, the grind produced at the lowest setting may not be fine enough for espresso. To shift the grind range finer, a small washer (included) can be installed below the cone burr. First, follow the steps in "Removing the Cone Burr/Grind Adjustment Assembly" (on page 10) then proceed to the steps below The written instructions and orthographic diagrams that follow that introduction in the manual are not clear to me. In practice, how complicated is this procedure?. Are there better instructions, or even a video to help? I'm considering buying one.

Hi Jeff, Yes, it is necessary to shim the grinder after break-in with the first few pounds of coffee. Here's a video showing how to shim from Baratza - it's quick and easy to do: kzbin.info/www/bejne/baSloX2ZqKtqY5Y There's also a wear part that will need replacement some months down the road. The felt friction ring between the micro and macro grind size adjustment. The replacement felt ring costs less than $2 and is easy to replace. Marc

I have been eyeing the Wi off for a couple of years now. If I lived near your shop I would be in there. (Different country!) I have a Quamar Q50 with a timed grinding function and there is no way I could get consistently within 0.3gms of my target. The weight of beans in the hopper, pushing down into the grinder can make a significant difference to the dose when using a timed grinder. Also, beans are a natural product and there will be variation in hardness, moisture and size. There is no substitute for weight in an accurate dose. Yes noise is constantly mentioned, but I’d be grinding for about 12 seconds, three times a day. It makes a lot less noise than our kitchen blender and not much more than the ice dispenser in our fridge. Thanks for the reviews and information Marc. I wish I could repay you by buying something!

Currently, the Eureka Mignon Libra offers the best of the 2 worlds : grind by weight and silent mode (not to mention the replaceable 55mm flat burrs). That's why I ordered one yesterday instead of the 270Wi I was considering.

It's a good one. You can install the adjustment assembly from the 270. You don't get the extra presets or the weight based grinding and hooks.

Looking at the SETTE AP 30 and the 270. Our breville pro grinder is making some strange noises, so time to update. Only the 2 of us in the house, we have 1 to 2 coffees a day. Is the 270 worth the extra $100? 30 =$388 270 =$499 We are in Australia thanks. Also love your videos. Thanks

I am just getting into espresso and looking to buy my first machine and grinder. Currently working with your sales team. I am looking at the Gaggia Classic and the 30 to start off. Then when I want to upgrade, I believe I read that you can just buy a collar for the 30 to basically turn it into a 270. Is that the case?

You noted a few differences between the 30 and the 270 (plastic hopper piece, basic portafilter/bin arms, and only one time setting vs 3). Is there any other difference in build quality, materials, or internals? The micro adjustment can now be swapped into the 30, which gives it the stepless adjustment, but that would only be necessary for espresso, but does that make them closer to identical?

Thanks for the great video! If you set all three machines to #5 setting, will the three units consistently provide the same type of ground quality? Or are the two cheaper units more prone to have deviations of either more fine or more coarse grounds? Thank you. Love the channel!

Hi A, Thanks for the comment and question. Fresh out of the box all 3 should be similar. It's the same burr set used in all Sette grinders. The lower burr carrying assembly is metal on the 270s and plastic on the 30. The difference in material has IMO no affect on grind quality. The big difference is no micro adjustment on the Sette 30. Thank you for comparison video on the three Baratza grinders. I have a Breville Duo Temp, and want to get nicer grinder for a better espresso shot. I like the Sette 30 (price) but feel that 270 is a slightly better grinder for better espresso and other features. After further research, many people are having issues with the motor after months or a year of use. What do you think? Do you know if they have figured out the problem? Thank you!

Hi nSG, I have not heard of motor issues for home users. I imagine some of that may come from people using these in high volume and/or commercial settings. These are not commercial grinders. Duty cycle rating for all Sette grinders is 10%. Meaning grind for 1 minute it should rest for 10. Or grind for a double espresso (about 5 seconds) and wait 50 seconds until grinding for the next. The Sette 270 series grinders have micro grind settings which allow for more precise control of extractions. Depending on how series you are about your espresso it makes a big difference. I typically only recommend the Sette 30 to those brewing in pressuirzed filter baskets - Breville calls those dual wall baskets. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi DV, Thanks for the question and please excuse my delayed response. I've been offline for a few days. I do not recommend the Sette grinders for use in commercial settings. Although well built and reliable they are appliance grade products with 10% duty cycle. That means for each second of grinding one should wait 10 seconds before grinding again. Typical double espresso dose of 16 - 20g take 4 - 5 seconds to grind on the Sette. So after grinding for 1 double espresso you should wait 40 - 50 seconds before grinding again. For a coffee shop I'd go with a machine grade grinder with NSF rating. Those can run reliably for years and stand up to the rigors of cafe use. hi Marc, have had a Rocky doserless for years, along with the Silvia, and my only complain is that the Rocky clumps the grind a bit. A friend highly recommended the 270Wi and I have a question for you. Would this grinder accommodate a portafilter with a funnel? I have a metal funnel to keep grounds into the basket, but perhaps with this grinder might not be an issue. Thanks

Hi mr x, Thanks for the question. Your friend gave you an excellent recommendation. OMG you will love the grinds coming out of the 270 Wi! Beautiful, fluffy well distributed - a world away from the Rocky. I've used the Sette grinders a lot and don't think a funnel is needed. But just in case Baratza does have this drop down accessory which has a built in partial funnel: www.wholelattelove.com/products/baratza-sette-drop-down-portafilter If you go with the Sette depending on ambient humidity and beans you may get a bit of static initially. If you do, know it calms down when the burrs get broken in a bit. If it continues to be an issue use RDT to moisten the beans a bit ot just stir beans in hopper with a moist finger. Marc

@@Wholelattelovepage thanks Marc, just looking at your videos those grinds do look beautiful, and despite the fact that my well-looked after Rocky looks like it might last a few eons longer I think the 270 Wi is it !! If you don't mind another quick question, is 14 gms about right for the double-shot basket of the Silvia. I found that anything above that hits the shower screen screw or sometimes I can't even tighten the portafilter. Thanks again for all your informative videos.

Hey Joe, Thanks for the question. Both are conical burr grinders with very precise grind size adjustment. One major difference is build quality. Sette is high-end appliance grade with a lot of plastic. BB005 is an entry-level machine grade grinder with very little plastic. If noise is a concern, the Sette is significantly louder than the BB005. It's also a much faster grinder and has the timed grinding presets which are remarkably consistent with dosing weights cycle to cycle. Grinds from the Sette are nice and fluffy, virtually clump free and distribute well into a portfilter. It's a little more prone to static than most grinders - especially in low humidity environments. BB005 does not have precise timed preset. It does do timed grinding but there's no indication of the actual time. Hope that helps! Marc

Thanks for another excellent video, Marc. We just recently bought a 270Wi but have noted, somewhat to our dismay, that the grinds spray outside of the portafilter, especially towards the end of the grind. In other words, it doesn’t come out nearly as perfectly as it does here in the video. We expect that there should be some initial calibration of the burrs, but as of today, which is fourth day of use, we’re still experiencing quite a bit of spray. Any recommendations on how to troubleshoot this?

Hi us, Thanks for the question. Like all grinders the Settes can produce some static in low humidity ambient conditions. It tends to be more in first use when burrs have no oil coating (more initial friction = more static). One easy fix is to use some RDT, Ross Droplet Technique. A simple as stirring the beans in the hopper with a moist finger or sritzing them with a fine mist spray of water. Works like a charm! Marc

Mark, great video. One questions, how is the 270 (non-W) when single dosing. I currently single does with my Breville Smart Grind when doing pour over, but am looking to add an ECM Claisskia w/ PID and a 270 to the brew options at home. I switch beans often thanks to the amazing amount of local roasters we have here in Portland.

@@Wholelattelovepage Hi, I am a single dose grinder and I weigh 17 grams every time. In your video I saw the Ceado e37 S has also 0,5 gram retention, but is much more expensive than a sette. It is more silent but can you taste the difference in price?

Hi Marc, I mostly need a grinder for espresso but would like to try cold brew sometimes. With the BG burr, would either the 30 or 270 grind coarse enough for cold brew?

No. Don't bother with Sette for coarse grinds. Just buy hand grinder - MYM45 or something from 1zespresso. And if you buy a good one then you csn also use it as backup for espresso, when Sette fails and you need to wait for service.

Hi SB, Thanks for the question. So our top 5 grinders of 2022 drops in a few days. Don't tell anyone, but the Sette 270 is in the top 5. Some things to keep in mind with the Sette grinders... They are loud, high-end appliance grade and use a conical burr. On the flip side, they produce a wonderful clump free grind, timed dosing is accurate cycle to cycle and the price compares well to entry-level machine grade grinders. Marc

Marc, the plastic teeth othe the adjustment burr piece on the 30 vs the metal one on the 270, does that thing receive a bunch of torc or is it only getting the adjustment? i was wondering if it would wear down being plastic or what i might need to consider when looking at the 270 vs 30. Thanks

Well actually since i just watched your video on Test: Baratza Sette 30 for Espresso Grind - Behind the Scenes and you showed that the settings on the 270 really are needed and the 30 with a 7 second increase for one adjutment wont be precise enough for my use. Marc saw your review of the oracle touch. I have the sette 270i and the bambino plus. I was thinking of getting the all in one maybe the barista pro touch. I’m concerned about the grinder on it. Would that be a step up from my bambino plus and sette. Or I’d be better with what I have. Just kicking it around. Thanks.

Hi Dirk, Thanks for the question. IMO the grinder in the Barista Pro does not come close to the quality of the 270Wi. Much finer control of grind size in the Sette plus dose consistency you will not get anywhere near as close with using the built in grinder. Marc

Hi AA, The Sette 30 can work but the micro-adjustment will give you better control when dialing in grind size. If you end up with the Sette 30 you can cheat a little by adjusting the coffee dose weight if you find yourself wanting a grind size in between 2 settings. Marc

Hi C G, Thanks for the question. Unfortunately I do not have a Breville 54mm PF in the building at the moment to test it out. Sette grinders are a bit more static prone than others - especially in low humidity environments. A little RDT (drops of water stirred inot beans) usually solves that problem. Hello Marc. I'm torn between Sette 270Wi or Eureka Mignon Silenzio. I will mainly use it for Espresso. I prefer Sette for the weight dosing, because I think it will speed up my espresso making, but I'm afraid of the reliability. How does the grind result compared between these two? Maybe you have another suggestion for doserless electric grinder around that price? Thanks

Hi Cello, Thanks for the question and please excuse my delayed response. I was offline for the weekend. For home use I love the Sette 270Wi. As you mentioned it speeds up the process. Weight based dosing is incredibly accurate, distribution is fantastic and grinds are incredibly fluffy. The EMS does have a higher build quality and is an excellent grinder as well. As the name implies it's relatively quiet - especially compared to the Sette which with it's straight thru design is one of the louder grinders. But it's very fast! Trade-offs :). The EMS is relatively accurate dose to dose in weight but if doing weight based dosing you will have to weigh on a scale and it's not as good as the 270Wi. As to reliability... again, the 270 is not at the same level as the machine grade EMS. But, Baratza has a fantastic one price repair program should you ever have an issue. If you ahve any issue (aside from burr replacement) with a 270 Wi it's $90 for repair. More info on that here: www.baratza.com/grinder-repair-program/ One other difference is duty cycle. The Sette has a 10% duty cycle which means for every second its run you should let the grinder rest for 10 seconds before grinding again. At espresso grind size the Sette grinds at near 4g/sec so grind a 5 seconds for a 20g dose and on paper you should wait 50 seconds before grinding again. That wait is not a problem for most home users but duty cycle is much higher on the EMS. Hope that helps! Marc

I recently purchased a Sette 30 from you guys. I absolutely love it. I do notice that it takes a bit longer to get an 18 gram dose than you guys show. Around 11 seconds. Is that due to the beans I'm using or maybe something else?

Hi Jeffrey, Thanks for the comment and purchase! So Sette grind speed is rated by Baratza at 3.5 - 5.5g/sec. Grind size is the major factor affecting per second output. At espresso grind size I usually get a little under 4g/sec. In medium grind say for drip or pour over it's in the mid to high 4s/sec. 11 seconds is very long for an 18g dose!

That's really long! In espresso grind range I'd expect 5-6 seconds for 18g dose. Bean type could have a small affect but I doubt that much. Have you shimmed your burr? Out of the box a 15 setting is usually far to coarse for espresso. I just did some tests with a well broken in and un-shimmed Sette 30 here. Keep in mind my grind settings are not transferable to your grinder in a meaningful way. The 30 I have is broken in to the point that it could use a shim. Anyway, at a setting of 15 for 5 seconds I got 24.71g out. The 15 setting was far to coarse for espresso. At a 1 setting for 5 seconds I got 20.4g out and it was borderline fine enough for espresso. Are you sure your hopper door is fully open? If you shimmed are you sure the burr is seated properly in the carrier?

Hi VS, You are welcome for the video. I have not used the William and it appears to be a discontinued product in my area. The 270 produces a lovely fluffy grind. It's a bit louder that other grinders but faster. It's a high-end appliance grade product so not the same build quality as more expensive prosumer grade grinders. Here in the studio we use the 270 daily and like it a lot. IMO the 270 is a great value for moderate home use. Marc

Hi Phil, Thanks for your patronage! There is a break in period of about 6lbs. of grinding. You can use any coffee ground during break-in. No problem with grind quality during break in period. A couple of things to note during break-in... Initial grinding may be a little staticky. As the burrs get a coating of oil static should reduce. Amount of static is variable based on bean type and ambient humidity. If you run into excessive static when grinding stir the beans with a damp finger prior to grinding to reduce. As the burrs get coated with oil grinding speed will increase. Weight based grinding should be very accurate out of the box but the grinder does learn on the fly so as grinding speed stabilizes accuracy will only get better. Your grinder will come with a couple of burr shims. After that initial 6lbs of grinding you'll want to install shims to restore the fine range of grinding as during break in a given grind setting will slowly get a little coarser. Installing shims is very easy. Congrats on your new grinder! Marc

Thank you for this review. Need advice, i use a cheap espresso machine (aca-es12a) with modified portafilter (to naked portafilter with non pressurized basket). Is sette 30 good enough for those espresso machine? Or must use sette 270? Because my budget limited.

Hi Andy, You are welcome and thanks for the question. You will be a bit limited using the Sette 30 for espresso. The micro adjustment of the 270 models really helps with precise dialing in of grind size. A workaround when using the 30 for espresso is to use adjustment of dosing weight to change extraction timing/quality. It's not perfect but can work. If you find yourself missing the micro adjustment the burr 270 burr assembly with micro adjustment can be purchased separately down the road. It fits in the Sette 30. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi PP, Glad you found me! I use the 270 Wi often. It should come with a couple of shims. After break in with about 3kg of coffee you install shim(s) to increase lower end of grind size range. For example if you're grinding at macro setting of 4 when the grinder is new out of the box during break in the grind will start to get a bit courser. Here's a link to a video showing how to install the shim (very easy, takes about a minute): kzbin.info/www/bejne/baSloX2ZqKtqY5Y There's also a felt ring between the micro and macro ring which provides friction to keep the micro ring from drifting. It's a wear part, less than $2 US and easy to replace. Hope that helps! Marc

If you don't need the presets, you can save a hundred by buying the 30 and the 270 adjustment ring. Then you'd have an extra 100 to spend on a better coffee scale.

Hi there! I just ordered a Gaggia Classic Pro and the 270wi from you. Expecting it tomorrow! Love these videos. I also bought a bag of the Orphea and a bottomless portafilter while I was at it. To get started tomorrow, do you have a recommended grind size starting point and weight (18g?) on the 270wi? I know this will vary but I figured since I’m using a bean you like maybe you could help get me started! Thanks for the continued helpful videos and information. Sorry for the delayed response I'm usually faster to reply. 18g is a good place to start. Unfortunately I cannot give you a grind setting. It'll likely be in the 3-5 range but every grinder is a little different even when same make/model. I'll link my dialing in video below in case you haven't seen it. Goes thru the simple dialing in process in detail. When grind is right you'll produce a hair under 2oz/60ml of espresso including the crema in about 25 seconds using the Maromas Orphea. If too fast grind a setting finer. If to slow grind a setting coarser and fine tune from there. Be sure and use the non-pressuirzed basket! Enjoy and let me know how it goes! Marc

I finally saw it in comments but maybe it should be called out more clearly that the bottomless portafilter by Gaggia is a triple and you’ll likely want to swap baskets. 18g in that bottomless stock filter wasn’t working! I’m all the way at 9 on the 270 to get a good tail from the bottomless portafilter. But the flavor is much better than my old Breville. I’ll continue to experiment. Thanks again! Oh and last thing, that 270wi is amazing, but a mess. I need a custom cut mat under it that I can easily dump / clean when it sprays grinds all over the counter 😳

Joe L I've read on the Baratza spec sheet the Sette 30 / 270 family, equipped with the out-of-the-box AP burr, has a grinding range of 230 - 950 micron. As a comparison, the rating of the off-the-shelf, and 'French Press Friendlier', Virtuoso rings-in at 200 - 1400 microns. My question is: what would the estimated micron range of the Sette 30 / 270 family be when equipped with the optional BG burr? Thanks and appreciate quality and informative job on the videos. Hi Joe, Thanks for your comment and question. The Sette series of grinders does best in the espresso range. The purpose of the optional BG burrs is to reduce fines in medium to coarse grinds. The BG burrs have a less aggressive leading cutting edge than the AP burrs. IMO a Sette with the BG burr is okay for medium drip grinds but would not be my choice for coarser grinding for press brewing. Baratza does not provide micron ratings for the BG burr that I'm aware of but I suspect the grind range is similar to AP. The BG burrs are friendlier but I'd go with the Virtuoso for press brewing. Hi SS, The Musica is a decent machine and will beat the pants off a Sunbeam. The 270 Wi is a remarkable appliance grade grinder. Really no other grinder that can weigh grind in real time and it's accurate! As an appliance grade product it's suitable for moderate home use only. If you grind a lot I'd look for a machine grade grinder. The 270Wi does have some wear/break-in parts. It will come with a couple of burr shims to correct for break-in after 5 or so pounds (2.5kg) of grinding and restore fine grinding. Also a $1 felt ring between the macro and micro adjustments that'll need replacement after awhile - but very easy to do. If you know you'll always want to weigh your doses, can handle a grinder that's a bit noisier than most and won't be grinding more than 10 or so times a day it's a good choice. Hope that helps! Marc

Love this line of products, have been looking for espresso setup and 270W is definitely going to be my grinder. Love the design and functionality. Especially weight based dosing and fact that burrs are easily accessable and there's no chute. Still looking for some good espresso machine that's about $500 or less, and not too big. Most likely going to be Breville infuser.

I have a Capresso infinity coffee grinder that I got from my parents but was thinking about upgrading it to the Sette 30 is the difference between the two worth the extra 250 dollars for the Sette 30. these grinder will be used for espresso. also is the Sette 30 like a single boiler and the 270 is like a dual boiler

Hi HS100, Welcome to the wonderful world of espresso. My answer depends a bit on what type of machine you are feeding. If it's an entry-level appliance grade machine using a smaller pressurized filter basket then the Infinity can work. If feeding standard non-pressurized filter basket then you want something more capable than the Infinity. It's a stepped size adjustment grinder with a huge range in a few steps. In higher-end espresso brewing precise control of grind size is critical for best results and personal sanity when dialing in. Both the Infinity and Sette are appliance grade products. If feeding a prosumer level espresso machine from premium entry-level like a Gaggia Classic on up I recommend a machine grade grinder. But those do get pricey. The Sette 30 is workable and produces excellent grind quality but it's a bit lacking in grind size precision compared to the 270 models which add the micro adjustment to the macro adjustment of the 30. If you find the 30 is not cutting it you can upgrade the grind adjustment collar to what's used in the 270 down the road. If you want to go affordable machine grade with super precise grind size adjustment have a look at the Bezzera BB005: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bezzera-bb005-automatic-grinder It does not have some of the features of more expensive grinders but has incredibly precise grind size adjustment and better build quality than appliance grade grinders. I am trying to determine which grinder to replace my Capresso grinder. I have the Breville Precision Brewer® Thermal coffee machine. I do not have an espresso machine yet. Not ready to buy one. Which grinder would you recommend between the Baratza Virtuoso+ or the Sette 30 with optional burr or something else? I like the direct flow through of the Sette line. I mostly make drip coffee but sometimes make French press or pour over. Thanks for your help

Hi Robert, Thanks for the question. It's a tough call between the Virtuoso+ and the Sette 30. The Virtuoso+ has a grind range of 200 - 1400 microns. The Sette 30 is rated at 230-950. Larger particle size with the V+ gives you more range for press and cold brew if you go there. Bartaza rates the V+ as "excellent" for brew methods other than espresso and the Sette 30 as "good" for the same. That Sette rating jumps up if you install the optional BG burr. I too like the grind straight thru of the Sette grinders. Especially useful if you are changing coffee beans a lot or single dose. The Sette grinds a lot faster than the V+. It's also a bit louder. If you go espresso down the road either can serve as a passable grinder for an entry-level machine but the Sette is far easier to use with dosing directly to a portafilter. Hope that helps! Marc

How loud is this grinder?? I’ve read a lot of complaints concerning this matter. Is there something you could compare the sound to that we are all familiar with ie ...hair dryer, blender etc. ? Also, I read in one of your responses that Baratza considers Sette 270wi excellent for espresso but only ‘good’ for drip and pour overs. I’m interested in mainly espresso but also use chemex/aeropress/hario pour over. Can you recommend a grinder ‘excellent’ in all these? Thank you!

Hi naomi, The Sette 270 is an open design so it is a bit louder than similar grinders. If sound level is a big concern then it may not be the best choice. But it grinds at least 2 times faster than other grinders and has next to no retention so that's nice if you prefer to single dose. If single dosing and weighing prior to grinding the Wi model may be overkill for you. The standard 270 model is the same grinder without the weighing function and will save you some $$. Multi-purpose grinders always require a compromise for thoise who are critical about their grind. Espresso focused grinders tend to produce more fines at larger grind sizes and brew grinders tend not to produce as uniform a particle size at espresso grind size. My go to for all purpose is the Baratza Vario. Baratza rates it Very Good for other than espresso and Excellent for espresso. If you want Excellent ratings for all brew methods I'd go with 2 grinders. Whole Latte Love This helps me a lot. Thank you! I was looking at ceado 5 for espresso since it looks to be very sturdy but I wasn’t sure if it would create a lot of popcorning with my single dose. However, I will read up on your recommendations. I’m also leaning towards profitec 600.

You are welcome. The Ceado does not have issues with popcoring - very minor if any. If single dosing it will have some retention. Depends on variables but 3g retention is not out of the ordinary. Pro 600 is a very nice and compact dual boiler machine. Best in class steaming power at ~2bar. Hi henguri, Thanks for the question. It's possible the weight will change - and that's true with any grinder. Different coffees may have different densities. For example, coffee beans grown at higher altitudes tend to be smaller and more dense than those grown at lower altitudes. Marc

Hi Robert, They will grind for drip. If you are very particular I would suggest picking up the Baratza Sette S2 Burr Assembly: www.wholelattelove.com/products/baratza-sette-bg-burr-assembly It's much better for grinding at coarser sizes on the Sette grinder. And all you need is the Sette 30. Micro adjustment not need at drip grind sizes. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi GO, Thanks for the question. Since the Sette grinders came out a couple years ago I've used at least 10 individual units extensively. The Original 270 and 270Ws, the 30 and now the 270Wi. I have had no problems with motors with any. I recently stressed out a 270Wi grinding 20 x 18g espresso doses as fast as it took to grind, weigh, grind, weigh, grind... I far exceeded the 10-15% duty cycle rating and had no problems. I'm curious to know what problems others have experienced. To the best of my knowledge all Sette grinders use and have used the same motor since inception. I wonder if other users may report motor problems when adjusting from a coarse grind setting down to a finer grind setting with beans loaded and without the grinder running. Doing that can choke/bind the burrs with partially ground beans to the point the motor will not start. FYI, one can make the same thing happen on far more expensive commercial rated grinders! When making large adjustments to a finer grind setting grinders should be running. Usually okay to make small adjustments like tweaking in the espresso range without a grinder running. Some grinders do better than others and it's usually dependent on the rating of the start capacitor feeding power to the motor. Marc

The other day I saw some consumers complaining on KZbin about the burs being "sliced" at the edges, I was questioning my self... After reading a reply from Baratza that states: the grinder must be on a very well leveled surface for it to run properly and doesn't get damaged. Then watching the 270Wi working in here, grinding up that precisely in weight, but visually "shaking the burs" like so, doesn't it goes against the company statement that it has to run smooth not to have any damages? Thanks!

I have an update on this. I've been using a Sette 270 since November 2018 and the gearbox failed on me recently. Thinking that my grinder was out of the 1 year warranty, I went ahead and bought a replacement for the motor/gearbox/outer burr assembly. It was super easy to replace it; I just followed the video on Baratza's youtube channel. I later reached out to Baratza and was given a refund on the replacement part. I was also pleasantly surprised that Baratza collects problematic parts in order to salvage as much as possible and reduce waste. In an era of disposable electronics, it is extremely refreshing to see a company like this.

Whole Latte Love Marc, I’m really leaning towards the 270wi. I’ve been looking at it for a couple of weeks. Recently a espresso friend recommended I get the ECM C manuale 54. He swears the 54 burrs are a significant difference. I realize I’m asking you to compare a manual vs a dose weight base machine. From my eye it appears the 270 makes fluffy fine grinds. What are your thoughts? Currently I’m using the Barista express grinder and machine. This year I want a new grinder and next year a much better machine.

Hi AI, If using a standard non-pressurized filter basket I'd go with the 270 for sure. The 30 can work with pressurized baskets but does not have the grind size control required for more serious espresso extractions. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi A, Interesting... 270 and 270Wi are essentially the same grinder. Only difference is timed vs. super accurate weight based grinding in the Wi. One could single dose on either in similar fashion. Just set time or weight well above what's actually needed. Marc

Im looking at upgrading from a Baratza Encore. I have a Miss Silvia, Chemex, Wave 185, and a V60. would I be better off going with the 270 or the 270wi? I do already own an Acaia pearl.

Hi Ryan, If you already have the Pearl scale then the 270Wi could be overkill unless you want to streamline things and have the Wi do all the weighing as it grinds. It's very accurate and each of the 3 presets learns separately. The 270Wi has to stop grinding before the final weight is reached. Over a few grind cycles each preset learns when to stop by comparing current results with previous ones. So use 1 preset for your espresso grinding, another for Chemex, etc. I should mention Baratza rates their 270 series "excellent" for espresso and "good" for drip, pour over and manual brewing. Il looking to get the lelit pl41tem and i nerd a grinder with stability..400 euros is my limit.. Maybe in the future id upgrade to a bezzera mitica or something similar but thd grinder would stay same.. The sette 270w here would fall in budget but what other brand and model would you suggest?

Hi, any thoughts on long-term durability for the Sette 270 line? Up close, I can see vibration in grinding mechanism so I wonder if people have experienced problems after long-term (2 years and beyond) use.

Hi y, The vibration is normal. Understand that is the whole grinding assembly which is moving. Most all grinders have flexible mounts between the motor/burr assembly and the grinder housing to reduce noise. The vibration you see is normal. Here's what Baratza says about life expectancy: "The motor is the limiting factor in duty cycle and life expectancy. The Motor of the Sette is rated for 150 total run-hours. A double shot of espresso (18gr) takes about 5 seconds of grind time. If you make 10 double espressos per day, the grinder will last 24 YEARS. If you make 100 double shots/day, then the grinder will last 2.4 years. This is about 1500Kg of coffee, so burrs and motor would need to be replaced."

Mignon is nice as well but not nearly as accurate weight wise and higher retention but that's not a deal breaker for everyone. Slightly surprised a Mignon came with a Rocket. Which model Rocket do you have? Was it a package deal?Marc

I am looking for a grinder. The design looks great but the buttons and display looks cheap as if not built to last and the company still neesds to make at last 100% profit on it. Can it be repaired? Or does it needs to be thrown away?

Hi Oliver, Thanks for the question. The Settes are what I call appliance grade grinders. That is they have a fair amount of plastic in construction and lack commercial grade components found in some higher priced grinders. Sette grinders can be repaired and Baratza does have a set price repair program for many of their models. I would love to invest into a grinder at the $300 to 350 mark. my parents bought me a grinder, because I was using a hand/manual grinder for my espresso beans. Unfortunately, my parents don't have a clue about espresso and grinding beans. So they bought a fairly expensive model of a big brand. However, the company has only a good reputation in cutlery, pots and pans and not so much in electrical appliances. I was reviewing the model and I was shocked. Actually it shivers down my spine because the item has a fail-rate of pfff don't know how many percent..... I just was reading that gearbox fails, the timer fails for the amount of beans and lastly, if something breaks they cannot repair it because there are no spare parts available. As a business you should think ecological as well and not only on the profit margines. Sad very, sad that we pollute or world with products that have a built in obsolescence.

Hi AP, Thanks for the question. Just be aware none of these grinders are commercial grade. They are designed for low volume home use. That said, they could be used for very low volume shop use. Just don't expect them to go forever. They have duty cycles of 10% meaning if you grind for one minute they should rest for 10 minutes before using again. If doing mainly espresso I recommend the Sette 270 or 270 Wi. If you are grinding for drip, pour over, press etc. then the Sette 30 is all you need. Honestly I'd consider a machine grade grinder more suited to commercial use. Which one depends on your main brew method. Some are espresso specialist and others more suited to grinding for brew methods with larger grind particle sizes. If interested let me know your main brew method and I'll suggest some grinders more appropriate for commercial use. Marc

Hi MT, Thanks for the question. Some will find the 30AP will not get as coarse as they would like for press coffee. Rated grind range with AP burr is 230-950 microns. Compare that to grind range of 200-1,400 microns in the Baratza Virtuoso. Sette 30 is okay for pour over but might consider installing Baratza's optional BG (brew grind) burr. The BG burr tends to produce fewer fines in coarser grinding. Marc

Hi JB, Thanks for the question. Minimum spread on the portafilter forks on the 270s is 1.5" which is 38mm. Forks on the Sette 30 have a minimum spread of 2.25"/63.5mm. PFs are wider than the filter basket. You should have no problem with the 270s. If considering the Sette 30 I'd measure the base of your portafilter and make sure it's wider than 2.25". Sorry I do no have a 49mm LaPavoni here to check here. Marc

Hi Mark. Cheers for the reviews! I want to buy the 270Wi but think I could get by with the 270 and save a few hundred dollars without sacrificing too much in terms of performance. Is that fair? I imagine if I fill the basket (commercial size) using the 270 and flatten it, it will be close enough to about 18 g per double shot that I'd never notice the difference between shots? Also, if using the same beans for a few weeks I'd hope not to have to change the grind size too much on the 270 to keep the weight output fairly similar? Have you noticed any issues with this?

Is there a 'hack' for using the 270Wi with a dosing ring? I have tried and the grinder does not operate. I have a dosing ring from my previous grinder and I notice a small amount of grinds spill out of the portafilter.

Hi AS, Honestly I've never tried using a dosing ring with a Sette. I did have a viewer share a link to his video comparison of the Sette 270Wi to a Ceado E6P. He mentioned he wanted to use a ring with the Sette but could not. He was having a lot of static with the Sette (easily solvable). In my experience the Sette's dose with minimal spill so long as static is under control. Baratza considers the Sette series their best home use grinder for espresso. I do not recommend the Encore for espresso grinding. Does the Sette 270wi also grind by time as well as weight?

Hi Mario, no - the 270wi only doses by weight. If you want timed grinding, the base Sette 270 will do that.

@@Wholelattelovepage One more question. Which grinder is better.: the sette 270wi or the baratza vario with the larger burrs I would be using it espresso and drip coffee machines

I love my Casa V, and my sette 270 WI, only thing is coming to the end of the grind it is throwing grinds out of both sides, more of a mess than I want to deal with. Any ideas. thanks. SGallo

Hi Sg, Throwing grinds from both sides? Do you mean at the bottom of the spout - like static? If so, the trick is to run a moist finger through the whole beans in the hopper just prior to grinding. Static is common with many grinders and worse in dry air - like AC or in winter when heating. The moist finger works with most all grinders and I've used with the Sette. Marc

Hate to bother you again Mark, the moist finger took care of 90% of the problem, and I thank you for that. I think I might have to discard the bottomless filter, I'm down to a grind size of E6 on my Sette 270wi using 20 grams, I only get one small spurt and i don't want to choke the machine, I use the Ophelia coffee, which I love. Never in my life have I seen so much crema. Anyway if you have any ideas please let me know. Stevie Gallo

Hi Stevie, You are not bothering me at all - I love talking coffee! So don't get rid of the bottomless filter. Just grind a little coarser. If 6E was choking try going to 7E. Basic goal is 2oz/60ml in 25 seconds from 1st drip. If time is still long at 7E try 8E. Once you are close use the micro adjust (ring with letters) to fine tune timing. Also, no worries about choking as it does not hurt the machine. By design, excess pressure/water is diverted by the expansion valve. I love pulling bottomless shots. Not only are they beuatiful to watch, but a great way of checking your distribution and tamping of coffee in the basket. If something is off you'll get spurts and/or uneven flow. When everything is right the espresso grows out to a uniform flow from all the holes in the basket. The Sette produces a very fluffy and well distributed grind making it easier than with some other grinders to pull consistent bottomless shots. Guessing you meant Maromas Orphea? It's my favorite Italian style bean blend - buckets of rich crema and a flavor I enjoy! Marc

Thank you again, I will keep trying. Orepha is the best espresso for creama I have ever used. Always had super- automatics, when I was a kid I grew up in a Sicilian neighborhood in Brooklyn, my mom and dad were Sicilian and after every dinner we always had a little expresso I was five believe it or not been drinking it ever since but even in the mob cafes that I used to drink with I can't believe how much more creamer comes out of that Ophelia, it's amazing thank you for the suggestion and I will keep trying until I get stuck and I will contact you again have a great day and thanks for all your help.
