I'm starting to research all of this now (for a future business based in NZ) and one of my biggest problems is just finding the goods on Alibaba. Like for years I've been trying certain goods on Aliexpress to figure out which ones I want to be selling only to find that when I started looking for them on Alibaba, the same search terms don't work. Brand names, model names etc. are seemingly irrelevant and it seems I'm going to have to search general terms and ask each manufacturer if they supply the specific item.

The young lady explained very well, however there are something I would like to add: When you are shipping less than a container, there are ways to avoid all the troubles the lady have mentioned. If you are tired of picking up your goods at the port and let custom broker and land transport eat up your money, try to find a supplier who is capable of dealing them for you, you can just sit in your house and wait for the delivery like express mailing. Now you have to understand you are actually paying to the supplier and they will pay for their freight broker who is capable of providing service including import procedures, duty taxes and land transport to your location, you will get a precise costs number from your supplier before shipping and you will find out it is cheaper than handling by yourself since they are the professional in this area and you have skipped multiple meddle man in the process.

Hi Sarah, I ordered shipping by sea I ship 300kg and I save on shipping by sea 2000USD comparing air. I do not need to ship a container.
@jamesaddison24287 жыл бұрын
What you are saying is simply not true. We often ship LCL as it's usually cheaper than FCL or air freight. My tip would be ask your forwarder for both LCL Ex works (door to door) and air freight quotes and see which is the cheapest, but yes there is the odd occasion where air freight is cheaper, but most of the time is not. If you have over 8 or so pallets then you'll want to consider FCL. Note you don't actually need to fill the container to ship FCL but if you don't fill the container completely then the factory may charge an empty space fee (usually around 100 bucks) .The forwarder will normally include customs charges in the quote so there are no hidden fees. Building a relationship with your forwarders is just as important as building a relationship with your factories. Forwarders generally want to continue to do business with you as it is profitable for them to do so. They are not out to stiff you and generally do not use 'slimy' tactics, but they do need to make a living! Find a couple of forwarders so that you can compare quotes, it'll help to see if one is overcharging, which can happen. If you ship FCL with them often, eventually they'll offer lower rates. Build relationships with them, it's not rocket science.

I'm in Brisbane, Australia. I use Brad O'Brien at SAL Global as my freight guy and he is unbelievably good. Sharp as a whip and the prices have smashed everyone else. I do have some China-based agents too, but Brad handles all my local clearance and customs every time. Totally agree re the video section on LCL freight. It was a surprisingly bad bit of advice. To your advice I would add something. As well as getting EXW pricing and door-to-door from your forwarder, get FOB pricing from the factory. Chinese factories get better prices for FOB clearance than Western freight forwarders do. And EXW goods may include local VAT, while FOB goods don't. If you're comparing bids from various suppliers, the difference in EXW and FOB totals is a good guide as to which ones are trying to rip you off. I'm told that consolidating FOB goods from multiple factories is impossible in China, though - FOB goods need to leave the country directly, because of the tax-free FOB status, so you can't park them for consolidation. But if you shift them to Hong Kong, that's a separate Customs zone and it's acceptable. I think an easier and cheaper solution would be to engage a trading company to buy your goods for you EXW and sell the consolidated load to you FOB, for an agreed fee. This would also save you on your Customs clearances, because you're only then declaring one load from one manufacturer. This saves me $160 per manufacturer. So if I buy small amounts from 10 suppliers, totalling 1CBM of goods up to 1 tonne, the consolidation saves me $1530 just in document fees.

There is a very important note she forgot to mention when shipping LCL (Less-Container-Load) When you are shipping LCL make sure the forwarder (or his agent) understands the nature of your cargo as containers are being assembled and consolidated in an CFS (Container Freight Station) which can first of all make a huge room for logistical errors and second there is a higher probability for cargo to be damaged or contaminated

Great advice, Sarah. How do you deal with import duty on your websites? Let's suppose that customer from another country buys a t-shirt from my POD store in the UK which offers free shipping with VAT included, so they will have to pay import duty on top. In your experience, are people willing to pay import duty on items? I know we have to pay it, but how do you deal with this on your stores? I recently bought a battery-powered facial item from Alibaba for $46 + $30 shipping. I've just received a FedEx invoice for £38.17, so this inexpensive item ended up costing over $100.00. I have a store to launch but am now hesitant due to not being sure whether customers will want to pay import duty on top of the item cost. Thank you!

what a fantastic insight , when dealing with Chinese never give up control, especially the cost of shipping always ask for an ex works price, if you ask for DDU price , the shipper will hand your goods over to a favored agent and get a kick back , that favored agent will gouge you again when the goods arrive in your country. target every cost point in the supply chain and be sure you are nominating every one of them , when you have done this you can use LCL as it is cheaper that airfreight , if you control the Costs .

I think your friend had a bad experience with LCL shipment for not being informed previously. You must know correctly the incoterm you will choose and you must know all the destination fees before acceptance. So your friends mistake wasn't that he shipped by ocean. His mistake was not having in detail all the costs and fees before shipment, so he maybe could have gotten better prices if compared and negotiated with other shippping companies (freight forwarders, NVOCCs).

Very interesting video , from my perspective I work in Logistics and International Freight Forwarding Pricing , I think you have touched some good points , but I would like to clarify your comment about not using an LCL solution . In addition to your customs advise , this can be dangerous . There are positives and negatives of using all 4 major modes of transport Air , Courier , LCL , FCL from China to AUS , NZ , Europe and America , In terms of the basics Courier Cargo is designed for small boxes , there will be a break point to different destinations when airfreight becomes the more economic option , a good freight forwarder will advise you on your break point . In terms of air freight is billed on the greater of your gross weight and chargeable weight , Air freight or courier is not economic if you're moving dense heavy product . Air freight is generally the most expensive mode of transport , their are so some exceptions so be careful and trust your freight forwarders advise . FCL cargo is what is really required if you want to scale your product and you're competing against major players . Most big companies that move Fast Moving consumer goods will ship FCL , so be aware that if you're in a competitive industry your competition will be landing their product based on FCL margins . LCL cargo is where I would like to clear up the confusion here . LCL cargo is a solution that is necessary for lots of products but it is important to understand . Large multinational organisations use this solution , it is necessary for certain products . ( generally LCL works better than airfreight for dense heavy product ) You are correct that LCL is billed differently than FCL but it operationally works differently . LCL cargo works as below Freight picked up from Origin , Freight consolidated with other freight and stuffed in a container , Consolidated freight delivered in an FCL to wharf Container shipped from origin to destination , Container picked up from wharf and delivered to an unpack depot container unpacked Freight presented ready to be picked up Freight delivered to destination point The additional charges for LCL freight are to account for the additional labour for packing / unpacking that container , the trucking of the FCL to the wharf . It is unreasonable to expect that , that process would be free of charge . I recommend trusting the advise of your freight forwarder when marking a decision they will know the cost break points to the respective locations . In terms of transfer of pricing to destination from Chinese suppliers this does happen in all modes and is unethical behaviour , I recommend having a sound understanding of INCOTERMS to avoid this 99% of the time this is not the freight forwarder acting unethically , it is the importer not understanding their obligations or the operational requirements of the consignment . In terms of your customs advise I actually feel this is misleading and dangerous , yes HS codes / tariff classifications are available to search online globally but for most countries there will be different ways to clarify , because your Chinese supplier says it is one classification it does not necessarily mean that will be correct . I strongly advise you get the advise of a licensed customs broker to advise on DUTY calculations , GST / VAT . I hope the above has been helpful ,

My experience in Australia might not be perfectly relevant to yours, but if it was here the answer would be yes. If you were me, you'd be looking at about $400 in fees once the goods arrive to your port, to get them to you, for under 1 CBM of goods. That is assuming you only have document fees for a single overseas supplier. Under 40kg or so, use an air courier for a door-to-door price. I pay about $35USD freight for small samples to Australia. They would cost me about $500 if sent by sea.

Appreciate the videos. But the information on LCL shipping vs Air Freight is so far off the mark. It's not a 'dirty trick' as mentioned. But simply your friend was inexperienced and didn't get a quote up front of all costs. In general LCL will beat air freight for anything heavy and probably over 1cbm. Unless you are shipping feathers air can't compete with sea shipping costs. The best commercial advice is to quote both methods and weigh the potential savings (if any) vs the delayed shipping time.
@WholesaleTed7 жыл бұрын
I understand your position, but I must disagree. He was inexperienced, but I find it dirty that most LCL companies will not be upfront if they can get away with it which is why I'd recommend all beginners to avoid it. A reputable company would not give you a quote for the "shipping" and then give you a quote for the substantially higher "fee" later just because you didn't initially ask for it. They know what they are doing and they do it because it works. If they had been upfront with the total costs he would've gone via air - and they know that - so they catch out inexperienced people this way. I can't help but find that extremely unethical.
@nzkiwifella7 жыл бұрын
The forwarder likely couldn't care less about what was probably 1cbm of freight. The key message is ask for all costs up front - shipped, cleared, palleted etc and delivered to your final destination. He just asked for 'the shipping cost' and he got given 'the shipping cost'. Associated costs related to the shipment are not the 'shipping cost'. Throw in the language barrier and you need to be very clear. But yes dirty tricks can be played - as I presume he was using a suppliers forwarder. This is why you should always appoint your own forwarder. But this should not discourage LCL shipment. >1cbm you should check both LCL and air costs, >5cbm 100% you should be checking. It will likely save you thousands. My last months shipment into AMZ would have been $5k more if I had gone air vs LCL. Surely that is worth the 15 mins to draft an email to a couple forwarders to check. Good to see another kiwi nailing it online though.

Re mistake #3 - I disagree and so does my accountant. The error here is not knowing the right "incoterms". Newbies should Google this word. I think you're wrong to say buyers need air freight if they're not buying a full container load (FCL). Your friend's goods were probably sent by CIF: Cost, Insurance and Freight. This is a huge mistake, but it isn't true that this is the only option other than air freight, which your video imputes. Last year, due to problems with 2 suppliers delivering late, I switched 4CBM of sea freight to air freight and it cost me thousands more than the 4CBM I didn't switch. There's no dodgy apples-with-oranges comparison there, either. One load from Guangzhou and one from Beijing were swapped to air freight, while one from Xiamen and another from Shenzhen remained sea freight, all within 2 weeks of one another and all roughly the same size loads. You are correct that air courier is cheaper until about the 40-50kg mark. With sea freight, you will pay the same port and customs fees for 1kg as you do for 1 tonne. But if you're shifting over 100kg or 1 CBM and air freight is cheaper, your freight forwarder or your local port authority is ripping you off. If your friend had instead purchased from China on FOB terms (Free On Board), and then engaged his own freight forwarder, he would have been protected from this. You still need to shop around - I'm paying half what others were quoting me when I started looking for a forwarder.

Hello Sara, quick question please. You were talking about duty-free policy like the wool material between Israel and the US. So if I import woolen jackets from china to the US how could the taxes could be any lower? Should I import it to Israel and then to the US? what do you think would be a better solution? Thanks and keep up the good work!
Brilliant! Thanks. A question. Where to find out about customs charges, taxes, import duties etc to US. Many thanks.
@gc76027 жыл бұрын
Two Minutes of Your Time > Call your customs office with your questions, also there is a government representative or department that is supposed to give advice to businesses on this. If they turn out being inept, then you may have to speak with an independent customs broker for assistance. But if you have a first order that is not too big in size you may be able to do it by air and just treat it as a package delivery and let it pass customs that way. I know FEDex acts as a broker at customs too if you make a delivery with them and they are pretty reliable. Not Crooks. Try first with a smaller package to see how the process is.

LCL is bone fide way of shipping and not as evil as suggested by this video. It is a legitimate and cheap way of moving freight if you cant afford air and don’t have enough to ship via a full container. In fact if it wasn’t for LCL mode many small start ups would never get their well “start up” as other options simply would not have been feasible. To avoid the “rebate” the buyer/importer/consignee all they need to do is request FOB terms from their supplier and then control which freight forwarder to use. Then ask the freight forwarder whether the rate offered is a rebate or market rate! Regardless what they say make sure you still ask for what the “arrival charges” will be then do your maths. Main point to remember is that you will get 2 parts to an LCL freight quote/charge. First part is the ocean freight portion I.e origin port to destination port, and second part are the arrival fees which Is the cost of handling the freight upon arrival at destination port. Key here is to remember under an FOB scenario you must add “sea freight LCL” rate (be it rebate or market) plus “destination arrival fees” and work out the total. This will then easily tell you what is the true cost per CBM and whether you should scale up to FCL or go via AIR! LCL is not your enemy. The Maths (assumption and wrong maths) is! You will often find that in most commercial situations where you don’t have enough cargo to move a full container, LCL will be your only other viable option.

1) If you are importing low-value items by air, it won't be competitive, air is only suitable for high-value specific goods where profit margins are very large or JIT deliveries. 2) If you are importing anything less than a few pallets, don't waste your time, find a different line of business 3) If you are paying $0.60 p/kg by sea, you are doing something VERY wrong. I had a small import from Ningbo to Felixstowe UK, leaving on the 17th of this month arriving on the 14th of next month, the cost is approx £400 for 6 pallets, 5,500KG (LCL) 4) LCL is ideal for lower volumes, ask your manufacturer for FOB terms, do not deal with ex-works for anything less than FCL 5) Wholesale is about low margin high volume, sorry to shatter any dreams but as a wholesaler myself, it is ultra competitive. TRUST ME. Cash flow is king and stocking is important to benefit from buying in volumes that make the pricing feasible from the manufacturer 6) China is NOT as cheap as you think it is, labour costs have skyrocketed in the last decade or so, don't expect items at pennies on the dollar, if you do find something VERY cheap, especially cheaper than all of your other offers, avoid. The quality will be awful and you will pay for it in the long run 7) If importing into Europe. Check your duty rates and any applicable testing and approval that needs doing in you market, example CE marking, CPR Testing e.t.c 8) I import on LCL also and you DO NOT get 'SLAMMED' by port charges. Maybe a few extra % for any deferred duty/vat payment and decontaining.

For some reason it doesn't make sense to import in bulk from china. Epacket shipping from china through your agent makes more sense. For example, an agent quotes me $7 for a product to shiping using epacket to US. Whereas, it would cost me $13-$15 (cost per item $2.5, shipping fee from china, custom fee, $3.00 pick and packing fee at 3pl, shipping charged by 3pl $3-$6) if I was import the product to US and ship using 3PL. Am I missing anything in this calculation? Please correct me if I'm wrong?
