How to tun a quad through stepped response. In this example, we tune a whoop, but the process is the same for ANY quad size with ANY quad firmware.

that's one of the things I really like about Silverware, it has special code in it's angle_pids section to recognize these events to not do the wall suck. As you all know I've been a big proponent of no air mode in Angle for a while now, and I still generally feel that way other than I really like how Absolute control feels and it can only work with Air Mode on.

Man thank you so much for posting this. I just got my Mobula7 V2 (came with Crazybee F4 Pro V2.0 Flight controller) and I made the mistake of flashing to Betaflight 4.1.6 before even flying it and found myself in a heavy jam when I went to fly it. The oscillations were soo bad on takeoff it wasn't even flyable. I tried other people's PIDs with little to no luck. I thought the problem might be because I was copying everyone's PIDs from their F3 flight controllers, but apparently that's not the case. I ran your PIDS and the thing is night and day Butter compared to everything else, so thank you so much for this!

Thank you for this video. Got my Toothpick running nicely tuning just through goggles since my FC doesn't have BB. Normally I tune my 5" rigs just by tweaking defaults and maintaining the P/D ratio. But that had my P too high and I was getting close to runaways. Finally reset to defaults and went step by step through this vid and it was a much better process and having D higher than P was my silver bullet. I would really like to see logs since I cant see how I is doing so I just set it to 35 lol... I'll do the JB method of upping I until things get worse then back off a step or two. Looking forward to your Toothpick tuning video for comparison. I'm basically running Kabab's setup on 2S at about 85g AUW.

Hey uavtech, love the videos always good stuff. Reminds me of being back in school, how much I love controls and how much I sucked at it. A quick question, and I've seen it come up time and time again tuning my quads. Looking at PIDtoolbox's step response graphs I get a good step response on moves with greater than 500 deg/s (decent rise time/single digits overshoot) while dialing in my P and D however my sub 500 deg/s step response is trash (20-30% overshoot). Any ideas?
@uavtech
@uavtech 4 жыл бұрын
Do a flight with full rotation moves and stepped moves (the half rate twitch moves I show in videos). Put that into PID Toolbox. See what you get. If still overshooting, look at the log directly to see if that is what you see (confirm). If overshoot, turn off FF and see if you still get it. If so, reduce P till it stops. If not, turn back on FF and use D_min as D-Boost to stop the overshoot with your desired FF gains.

Hey man I ran into something interesting. I was helping someone through a forum tune his quad, however it's like a side project type thing to see if we can get a consumer grade drone to fly acro with just a hobby grade FC and ESC. The interesting thing is that we tuned it for a few days and finally got it to look slightly better in the BBlogs..... The FC is an F3 and we are at outrageous PIDs like 70 on the Dterm and 90 on Pterm lol... So He sent me a screen shot of his filter tab and I saw tht RPM filter was being used... I suggested he disable the RPM filter and when he did it was like magic... all of a sudden those PIDs WERE outrageously high and the drone flew 100x better..... Before removing the RPM filter the gyro was following the set point during a hover, but as soon as the stick was moved it became horrendously unstable.... I had thought this was just the nature of trying to do this particular project. The question I have is this..... Why would removing the RPM filter have made such a drastic improvement? Does it have to do with it being an F3 FC? I had the theory it might work removing the RPM filter, but I had no basis for this theory, and when it DID work I was like pulling out my hair trying to understand WHY. I was hoping you could had some insight as to why this might've been the case....

Extrapolating from the starting D-Term rule of thumb where 6S should be 20-30, 5S 30-40, etc. Can we presume brushless 1S and 2S might be in the 80-90 and 70-80 ranges, respectively? Also what would you recommend as a general I term for 65/75mm brushless whoop class? Lastly, I keep reading that P and D ought to be generally the same for whoop class without a solid reasoning. And that D Min is recommended to be disabled as it causes oscillations. Is this what you are finding as well? Thanks man. Good stuff Mark! You nailed it as usual... 👌 Any recommend changes from this particular P/D ratio and tune for a 1S 65mm 802 19000kv motor racing whoop? I've been using your betaflight 4.0 tune from the mob7 for the last 6 months on my 1S 65mm racing whoops, with quite acceptable results... I've recently completed an 85mm whoop build, with 4.1, and RPM Filtering, and I've been blown away with how it flies... So, now I'm jonsin to get RPM Filtering at 48khz rocking on my 1S 65mm racers as well... I'm just hesitant in the middle of whoop racing season... Its just cold here in Maine! 😢 I don't want to go outside, and find my P/D ratio by eye and ear; and, I certainly don't want to install my external logger on a 65mm whoop... @@uavtech That makes sense. I just love the idea of the sliders and am trying to use them as much as I can. I would love to see community presets in configurator someday. Fantastic video. Thanks very much! My mobula on 4.1 without rpm filter climbs up the walls as soon as I hit it. What I mean is when flying indoors, if I bump into something, thus stopping the direction it's flying, the controller will over correct and send the quad into the blocked direction. If that happen to be a wall, it would literally stick to the wall full throttle until I unarm. Very likely my tune is bad... But what is the reason to do so?

Thanks! Just wondering; are things like P/D balance not expecting a linear thrust relationship?
@uavtech
@uavtech 4 жыл бұрын
All PID systems do expect a linear thrust relationship. That is a downfall of a PID controller; but NONONE has a better controller for a quad yet. BF does have a tool, Thrust Linearization, to help make the thrust curve linear; but motor torque curves still makes it hard. Joe Lucid - a BF dev - is has plans to feedback the motor eRPM data back to the PID loop to help with this kind of thing, but it is not done yet. Of course more complex then something like filtering. Nevertheless, a P/D balance is key for tuning a PID controller and that is what we got.
@lievenvv
@lievenvv 4 жыл бұрын
@@uavtech Thanks! That was partly why I was asking.. Is there a reason that Thrust Linearization is not default? I did try it once, and seemed to work pretty well. It might be interesting if we could make something like a lookup table (or other means) for motor signal vs. response calibration, e.g. using RPM and/or Gyro data. Perhaps even throttle response could be evened out using the accelerometer and a LUT or approximation curve. Curious to learn what Joe Lucid is scheming with the PID loop!!

1. RpM and sliders at 1.0 2. Paste the CLI stuff 3. Flips and rolls to move P to be as high as possible so no bounceback. 4. Move P and D up together till you get oscillations and then back down. You can do it. :-) easy peasy lemon squeesy.

@@gonebdg , it is defined in the last page of the document. But basically, when you do a flip or roll, it doesn't stop sharp. It kind of passes the stop point and bounces back. See the PDF used in the video, last page for a more extensive definition.

I have an iFlight Titan DC2 Cinewhoop. The tune is pretty much identical to the iFlight Bumblebee. Just starting out in the sport and would like to tweak the DC2 tune so it flies very predictable, capable of pin-point accuracy, minimal side-to-side drift and/or up/down movement. This would be intended mimic slow steady-cam type cinematic shots. Have you tackled this type of tuning? If so, what's your recommendation(s)? Enjoy your tutorials...although I'm still trying to wrap my head around it all.

Regarding the Anti-Gravity CLI command, is that value lower or higher than normal? I think i get the idea, is it because anti-gravity kinda boosts I-term? And since you configured it for angle mode you lowered it, so it doesnt double down also like high i-gains + gyro. Am i on the right track?
@uavtech
@uavtech 4 жыл бұрын
Angle mode acts like an I-term for larger pushes. If you have higher I-gains and I-term happens to wind up because you are hitting or riding against something, then it will will have more influence after you have recovered as it winds down.

My biggest challenge is getting a dive dialed in. Every time I set up a dive, I end up with a huge corrections on the roll axis while lowering my throttle. I've combatted it by lowering my I-term on some quads, but other quads seem to do it at the weirdest times. Any advice for tuning dives, with airmode on, so I can drop to zero throttle and then just coast my way back to the ground without any huge oscillations or propwash freakouts at the end?

Bossman....question: so what's the point of having the ability of modifying "D" term , why not have P and a ratio slider? So you tune P and adjust the ratio. I would assume the ratio can't be bigger than ..5 maybe. Wouldn't that be easier for tuning?
@uavtech
@uavtech 4 жыл бұрын
tuning with the sliders is intent to make it easier and reinforce the concepts of P/D ratio, etc... However, slides doesn't let you vary Pitch vs. Roll for a whoop and doesn't give you range enough to get the tun i came to here. Sliders are more for fast 5" tuning, but when you get into a more detailed tune, the intent is to leave them behind and move up to the PID grid.

@@uavtech so does this mean a 3" or 2.5" will have more noise compared to a 5" ?

@uavtech 4 жыл бұрын
@@justhackitfpv , yes they could easily. It all depends on the power to weight ratio of your 3" and 2.5". Also, props suck for small quads compared to 5". So it is critical for the little guys to have the right props first. Then look at noise, etc... "The right props" are the ones that don't produce a lot of vibes. For my 2.5", it had horrible vibes on GF 2540 props, but then i switched to HQ65mm props, it was awesome afterwards. It is ALL about the props on the little guys. If you don't know which ones are right for you, order a bunch and try them out. That is what I did, but happened to land on the HQ65mm right out of the gate.
