@@SouthernGreyShark Not even close. I own two .45 ACPs and no .357s at present, but for an all-around round the .357 is superior is almost every way, except the length and case design which makes autoloaders challenging. However, from every other aspect the .357 is the winner.

@@LTVoyager Blowing up clay targets, certainly the 357 is more impressive. But IMO, when it comes to self defense & stopping a human being the best, I believe the slower but far larger 45 acp round is better overall than the faster but much smaller 357 round. That's taking everything into account, including (over) penetration and recoil. Honestly, IMO even the 10mm is a better option than the 357 mag when it's self defense as the goal. But if pure ft lbs of energy is the only measure, hell, go with a 44 mag.

@@SouthernGreyShark Thankfully, I’ve never had to shoot a human so I can’t compare the cartridges that way. However, if you look at the video titled 1800 shootings…, the .357 outperforms the .45 nearly across the board. And surprisingly, the .380 and even .22 do surprisingly well. I suspect the issue is shot placement in the case of the latter as most shooters are simply more consistently accurate with lower recoiling rounds. I still carry a .45 as my EDC, but as I move deeper into my 60s, the recoil of the XDs .45 gets more noticeable every year. I am seriously considering a 9mm (also for cheaper ammo) or maybe a .357 Sig. If there was a way to make a compact semiautomatic handgun in .357 Mag, that would be my first choice. Caliber debates are fun, but I think we all know that shot placement almost always trumps cartridge choice.

I purchased my first .357 Magnum in 1965 when most of my time was spent patrolling the coast of South Vietnam. The patrols involved boarding sampans, junks and suspicious merchant vessels. The purchase was made at the Navy & Marine Corp exchange in Subic Bay where we would return for refueling and replenishment between patrols. Our duty weapons were antiquated 1911s. The 357 gave me a lot more confidence during a hostile situation.

This test tells me two things: if energy is pretty even between the two, the Sig would be a better defense round, because it deposited its energy inside the clay, the Magnum would be a better hunting bullet, because it exited the block with apparently lots of energy left, meaning it would penetrate much deeper. Just my 2 cents. I have both.

@@user-zv2eu1vj4l while your first point is obviously true, and ribs and bone can challenge the performance of intermediate calibers like 380 and 9mm, there is no reason, based on empirical data, to believe that the same thing would be true for either 357 cartridge. Secondly, the 357 Sig does not do a maximum of 1350fps w 125gr, that's the minimum, some loads like Underwood do 1550fps or more from a 4 inch barrel, and if you check Lucky Gunner Labs, you'll see that round-for-round, the 357 Sig and Mag are basically identical performers from a 4 inch barrel. In fact, 357 Sig has the same standard deviation in velocity among many loads as it does within several shots from the same load. 357 Sig basically duplicates 357 magnum in similar loads from a similar gun, but 357 Mag has some hotter loads and a lot that are made for hunting, which generally means deeper penetration than defense ammo.
@nicholasthomas4382
@nicholasthomas4382 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-zv2eu1vj4l Sanow and Marshall, while relevant data sets, are also old as hell, especially considering their book was written before 357 Sig was created, was largely the motivation behind 357 Sig, and the defense loads available in 1992 have all been eclipsed by modern loadings. There are obvious issues with Sanow and Marshalls results, for example the fact that, with fewer defense shootings total, the 10mm and 44 Magnum both have lower one shot stop percentages than 40 and 45. You don't have to be a scientist to see the comparative performance of those calibers, with modern defense bullets, totally eclipse the abilities of 40 and 45 ACP both. The problem with only referencing anecdotal data is that you only have the shootings that are available to you to reference, there is no control set, unless you balance it against relevant modern testing of modern bullets. To put it simply, a flesh wound with a 44 magnum is going to be less effective at stopping a person than a 9mm to center mass, and that may be reflected in an anecdotal analysis, but you'd have to be a stupid person to think that a CM shot from 44 magnum would be equally ineffective. Ammunition reliability and performance technology has only gotten better, and with modern ammunition, 357 Sig absolutely mimics 357 Magnum in 125gr ammo from a 4-5 inch barrel. The difference in performance between the two in an actual shooting would be based more on bullet placement than cartridge. Another good reference point is the Paul Harrell meat target. While obviously not a perfect anologue for a human torso, the pork ribs do accurately represent what a bullet does when it hits bone. A much better comparison than the 2 357s would be 357 Mag versus 9mm. In gel, they can have VERY similar penetration and expansion numbers, and many people would consider that to mean they are equally effective. What you and I are recognizing here, that MOST modern analysts don't, is that humans and animals FEEL a gunshot wound, which is not quantified in any study especially a gel test, and that therefor energy matters, and considering Marshall and Sanow and many other studies, energy matters a hell of a lot, all other things being equal. Like I said, among the variety of Sig and Magnum loads, you will have some more effective for defense than others, but overall I think they are close enough to be considered basically equal. Gold Dot in Sig is definitely going to perform better than Hi Shok in Magnum, and vice versa. By the Sanow and Marshall methodology, calibers with more shooting incidents available tend to be rated as having a higher one-shot stop percentage. Edit: I misquoted the release of Handgun Stopping Power as released in 1992, but that was Marshalls first book on the subject. The point stands, even in 2001 ammo tech was far behind what we have today. Also, good cross-reference resources are Greg Ellifritz and Massad Ayoob, they discuss issues with methodology and results in Marshall and Sanows work. 380 ACP does NOT surpass 38 Special for defense, especially not today.

The thing I love about the SIG is all the energy that was passed into the inside of the target. I think the only reason why that .357 mag round didn't go all the way through the clay block is because, aside from being a very light round for that caliber at 110 grains, it was traveling so fast that the round expanded upon impact and, thus, prevented it from passing through the block.

Might as well lump 357 mag into that group as well. Most commercially available 357 mag ammo is basically right around book starting loads. I keep seeing all these videos trying to compare auto loaders to 357 mag but the fact is that there are very few companies that actually load 357 mag to it's potential. When you compare apples to apples (full power loads out of equal length barrels) the fact remains that you can't get magnum performance out of a semi-auto pistol without stepping up to a Desert Eagle or the like.

The capacity, ease of reloading, and easier to carry concealed options in the auto loader style only make sense. However in the woods/field, I would definitely go with the .357 Mag again. I loved my 357 sig. This was the most exciting new pistol cartridge to be introduced in the nineties. This power in a small auto was awesome(at the time only the Desert Eagle was offered in 357mag) plus the fact that so many manufacturers were offering it. I had a custom barrel fitted for my 96 Elite in 357, it cost me a lot, but it was sweet. I miss that gun, but not the ammo prices. That stuff was expensive back then too.

.357 Sig was design to match the .357 Magnum with a 125 gr bullet from a 4" barrel going at 1450 fps. But as always major ammunition manufacturers watered down to ~1250 to ~1350 fps.

Yes. Its a bonded bullet. Velocity should be around 1700+ fps in a 158 grain bullet out of that Henry. Try to avoid the scapula if you can though. I have 2, 357 rifles and handload for them. 20 inch Henry big boy steel and an older break action 22 inch handi rifle. Mostly with XTP bullets though. 16 inch barrels seem to give you the most bang for your buck. More barrel after 16 depending on your powder will slow your bullet back down.. Personally have no recent experience with 158 Gold dots in the rifles though I did work 6 years at ATK here in Lewiston making them and they are top notch

I have both 357 mag and 357 sig but I would go with the 357 sig shooting Underwood ammo 125 grain gold dot bonded hp @ 1500 fps which more mimics the 357 mag. The purpose of the 357 sig was to have 357 mag power in an semi auto with more capacity than a revolver. 357 Magnum to. For the most part, the 110 to 125-grain JHP bullets are best. At 1,300 to 1,440 fps, these bullets expand quickly, fragment and produce an effective wound channel. The Hornady Critical Defense at 1,380 fps doesn't fragment and produces an impressive balance of expansion and penetration.

Blowing a softball sized tunnel through something is cool enough for me. I'd go with the .357Mag. 7 shots of that kind of awesomeness equals the power of 10 shots from a Sig. LOL Okay shoot once, hit the target in a vital place and there is no need for 13 more shots or even 5 more. Now if you are in a war zone, things are different. But I'd say in either case. Practice the one-shot one-kill scenario at the range. Get good at that and it's a moot point to talk about needing 14 rounds. After all, most people that want a handgun, want it for personal/self-defense if they ever need it (and I hope no one would ever need it for that). We are not soldiers out here fighting in Vietnam or the Middle East somewhere. Now that all haveing been typed! Between the two, I'd say the sig on recoil is more manageable, but if you want to make sure the perp doesn't get back up! 357 mag all the way. But then there is the argument of shot placement is everything. In that, then all you'd need would be a single shot 22 cal.
