To start, lets talk about THE GREAT RESIGNATION, while nearly 40% of Americans are thinking about QUITTING their jobs, with “I QUIT” now being called a sign of an economic recovery.
First, one of the most SELF EXPLANATORY reasons people are quitting: They want to work from home.
The reality is, many employees got USED to working remotely, not having a commute, and being able to focus on their work without any office distraction - and that’s something they want the option of keeping. In fact, it was found that “ One in 4 pandemic home buyers would choose to stay at their new home and find a new job if required to return to the office.”
Second, Employees are looking for LESS WORK.
During the last year, as some businesses downsized their staff…that increased workload fell on fewer employees who had to pick up the slack. All of a sudden, one person was doing the work for two - and the expectation was, at least you’re fortunate enough to have a job in the first place…but NOW, the turns have tabled.
Third, people are quitting because they value CAREER GROWTH.
It was found that “80% of those thinking of leaving a job are concerned about career growth, and nearly 75% say the pandemic made them rethink their skill sets.” It was even said that “High-performing workers are the most concerned about career advancement in their current jobs, and they no longer feel geographically tied to local employers in a remote world.”
Fourth, employees are also quitting because they’re getting BETTER OFFERS with HIGHER PAY.
Workers who stay loyal to the same job make, on average, 50% LESS than someone who switches jobs every 2-3 years. That’s because workers who switch jobs are able to negotiate better terms with an increased pay…and now, during a worker SHORTAGE, the EMPLOYEE has more leverage in terms of who they pick to work with.
And fifth - companies are flat out getting more competitive.
The unemployment boost also has a second benefit for employees - it gives them the LUXURY of shopping around, taking their time, and waiting for the best career opportunity instead of snatching up the first offer they get. That’s leading EMPLOYERS to become more competitive, offer higher pay, with better working conditions, sometimes from home - and, employees are the ones who get to benefit.
Workers realized that they can get just as much done from home, IF NOT MORE, while saving time on commuting, spending more time with friends and family, AND saving money in the process…and, companies are taking notice. To attract top talent, businesses should be bending over backwards to make their employees happy - and, if they’re not - right now, there are plenty of others willing to give them what they want.
This is being referred to “The Great Reshuffling,” as people switch careers, employers, and locations, finding work they value much more - and, in the long run, I think this is a GOOD THING. Employers should be able to retain better quality employees…employees will get better working conditions and higher pay…not to mention, maybe a better work-life balance.

This happened to me with the Mortgage Crash in 2008. I have not worked a full-time W-2 job since, but have had some of my highest earning years doing gigs and choosing when I do and do not work. I mean id argue its entirely true people are expecting more for less work, there is absolutely no reason McDonalds should pay more than minimum wage, I have worked there trust me. People shouldn't be looking to fast food for a career either, those jobs are meant for teens working a part time gig, the dude making my fries shouldn't get payed as much as somebody in a warehouse loading trailers all day, I do not care if people can live off of minimum wage, find a job that you can.
@Coryo61827
@Coryo61827 3 жыл бұрын
@@Garrillagamer Why? Why is loading a trailer worth more than a fast food worker? Someone who loads a trailer literally just lifts stuff, and even then most of the time they have fork lifts for that. But at least they don’t have to deal with customers, which, quite frankly is one of THE worst part about a customer service job, especially when you aren’t in control of who your customers are. Someone working in a warehouse doesn’t have to deal with the annoyance of nasty customers on top of having to just do their regular job. Both a warehouse worker and a fast food worker are both still work, just different kinds of work. But both don’t exactly require much brain power. So again, why does a warehouse worker automatically deserve more than a fast food worker?

Been working at dollar tree for over six years, I worked through the pandemic & I make less than unemployment cause the company requires us to work under fifty hours a month so they don't have to treat us as actual employees legally. No health, no dental, no vacation, no time & half, no paid sick leave outside the pandemic, no injury coverage, if you get injured on site or by a customer the company just fires you if you don't get back to work. Also zero care for employee mental health, I have been robbed at gun point twice working the same store, they never improved security and said I need to finish my shift & be back on time tomorrow. It's honestly one of the few retail jobs where the company devalues it's employees more than bad customers.

I feel as though the biggest problem with working for several mainstream companies is that there is no sense of reward for loyalty to a company. For example, what is the point of remaining with a low paying job if you will receive no career boost or loyalty reward? As a conservative, free-market capitalism revolves around incentives, so if you do not give employees an incentive to stay, why should they stay? For example, an employee is more likely to work at McDonalds (sometimes for even low wages) for several years if he/she knows that they will pay them $0.50 per year that they have been there + performance bonuses (something they have to maintain). I see other conservatives rant about how McDonald's is supposed to be a high school job and entry to the real world, but realistically, this is a very narrow-minded way of looking at things. In fact, the return on investment of being employed by these food and retailer industry companies is not even decent compared to other industries like warehousing, logistics. UPS in my area is hiring for $23/hr for newbies. Companies forget that their industries are also competing against other industries. If the food/retailer industry does not evolve its business model, then I fear they will be in a big pinch, especially the damage they have taken to their reputation from low wages. Frankly, I do not think simply raising wages will solve any long-term issues.

It's like the service industry is in a massive strike. It's so interesting. I was on vacation last week and all the restaurants seemed to have new employees and/or they were very under-staffed. Companies will have a harder time making money when people have to wait a long time for their service or have poor service because the experienced people left, and the new people are training the even newer people.

with the proliferation of apps like uber, instacart all these bs service jobs should invest in automated scheduling software and realize that people will only work these if they want some extra spending cash. If you're gonna get paid crap to deal with the public using gig work at least lets you set your own schedule and quantity of hours put in.

Yeah where I work at it's hard as a semi new person to try to work when the owners don't want to pay much specially when you got decent unemployment benefits at the same time the people who I do have to work with never really come on time even an hour or two late just about every day. And in some cases rage quit and I have to end up doing a two-person job all by myself. It's getting to the point where I don't even want to care to work either. It's one of the reasons why another decent employee she left months ago just because of all this. People are refusing to get together and make a big difference so we can go forward in life. Owners are too cheap and workers are too lazy and then you add people who are okay getting tired of the other two. It's just one big mess

It does not apply to management positions, nor does it apply to any high paying roles outside of certain specific dense metro areas.

As someone who manages a store that pays really well (by retail standards), I think about quitting based on how I'm treated daily by customers that are frustrated with the state of the world, and take those frustrations out on workers. I've experienced so much aggression and abuse this year, more than ever before from customers that: refuse to wear masks, don't want to wait outside when we're at the state alloted capacity limits, and are just generally unhappy. Being a retail worker has been awful during the pandemic!

I hope this trend continues. Companies SHOULD be desperate to find people. Maybe that'd mean companies will start appreciating their employees more. The shipping company that delivers for us can't find/retain workers, so now our supply chain is really messed up. My company is losing thousands a week because of this issue. And it all stemmed from the shipping company not paying enough and mistreating their employees. Now that company is under huge fire to either fix things or be dropped from the list of suppliers.
