Kids these days likely won't appreciate it. But everything before the ps2 Era, seemed like gaming's infancy. They were still working out the feel in games, and in physical controls. Games wouldn't be what they are today, if not for those "shitty old games", that some kids don't like xD old heads appreciate it allot because we know how much worse they were before hand. Kids are "spoiled" from what became standard after these games. For what the zelda series introduced in general, it SHOULD be one of the best games of all time. Even though i hated zelda 1, i still respect it.. And i love every game after it. Including those shitty CDI games and the unpopular ones like zelda 2 lol.

I had a Commodore 64, Atari2600, Sega Mastersystem and Megadrive in my house growing up, but it wasn’t until I was at a friends house and he had a SNES and Zelda playing when I got there that I truly fell in love with gaming. Remember getting home and begging my dad for a SNES and the game…until one day I got home from school and my dad said to me, very angrily “get in the front room now and clean up your mess” which really confused me because I knew I hadn’t made any mess in there, then I entered the room and there was the SNES hooked up the TV with the Zelda cartridge ready and waiting. One of my favourite memories of my entire life, I’m 37 now and still remember the entire thing clear as day. I spent months playing this (as well as Super Metroid) and the day I finally beat it, I was literally running round my house telling my whole family how “I completed Zelda” like ridiculously hyped that I finally did it. This game is so special to me man.

It was the only game where I remembered where everything was due to playing this game so often as a kid. Not even Super Mario World which came with the console, that I played it as much. I saw this game first as a kid in the early 90s, probably 92 but I'm not sure. Back then it had taken a while for NES/SNES games to make its way from Japan across the US and - finally - to (continental) Europe where I was living. I had already been well familiar with the 8bit NES universe and its masterpieces such als Legend of Zelda, Megaman 2/3, Mario 1-3 etc. So it's safe to say my expections on video games had been quite high. Nevertheless, when I saw the beginning sequences of Link To The Past I was impressed to a degree that I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I must have almost looked like a hypnotized young caveman seeing fire for the first time and I don't think this is an exageration. The 16bit leap mixed with the obvious passion and competence of game developers made EVERYTHING about this game so much better than everything I'd known before. The landscape was so much smoother and lively, the movement of Link wasn't cubic and awkward, requiring some addition of your own imagination to see an elvish person moving around. And the sound... I think it was the sound that ultimately sucked me in. The well done adaptation of classical music and the atmospheric contributions such as rain noise and thunder (in sync with actually visible rain drops I mean, come on!) were things I simply hadn't seen before. This game felt like there was a whole new world waiting for me to be discovered. I could go on for hours but I think I will rather play Link To The Past now. ❤

That being said, LTTP has been my favorite Zelda game since I bought and played it probably not long after it was released (and before you were born). So, not everyone has the first one they played as their favorite. BotW has now made it a tough call between that and LTTP. Honestly BotW felt more like a 3D LTTP fleshed out in a new Hyrule to me. Anyway, solid vid. I'm, honestly, not that surprised that some call it overrated when they can't find it in themselves to get past the intro, or they don't like the old pixel look.

Issue was? No one claimed the prize and Nintendo Power Magazine quietly never mentioned it in any way, shape,or form again. Reason I bring this up? Theres a massive rumor that Miyamoto was FURIOUS at Nintendo Of America for using the fictional name ‘Chris Houlihan’ in a FAILSAFE room simply there to prevent the game from crashing if Link enters any area outside of Over World. You should re-edit this and include it. Everyone loves Pop Culture references!

I played completely through this game just last year (late 2024). It’s a boring and uneventful slog that still suffers from the “how the f$&@ was I supposed to know that” issues that plagued the game’s first title, such as multiple heart containers locked behind literal guessing games with zero indication of their existence and the final sword and bow upgrades being locked behind a wall that requires an item that a) has no other purpose in the game b) doesn’t exist when you first visit the location c) is found in a location the game doesn’t push you to revisit after the item suddenly appears there and d) has no indication that the item will ever exist there previously in the game or what it’s one time use will actually be. The only positive that I can give it is that it had a large variety of enemies that required you to engage them with different and unique strategies to defeat, something other popular titles such as OoT were sorely lacking in. There were other issues I had that were more a result of technological restrictions of its time, such as a lack of interesting or memorable NPCs to interact with to break up the monotony of combat or the lack of an engaging story (something you touched on) that wouldn’t fit in such a small game storage. But these issues can be dismissed as products of their time. No, this game was never good. Completing it felt more like a chore. I didn’t enjoy it the first time I played it a decade ago, and I didn’t enjoy it when I gave it another shot just a few months ago. I can’t even consider this game mid! The only part that gave me satisfaction was when I finally completed the game and knew I wouldn’t have to touch it again.

Tbh, I beat GBA Alttp semi-recently on NSO and outside of some really mean cracked floors that you need to bomb, yet look exactly the same as the non-destructible cracked floors next to it, this game holds up incredibly well. GBA even swapped out the "how many times did you reload the game" counter for an actual death counter and has its european version available, so that's neat. The story is also just kinda really cool in a way? Most of it is kept brief and basic due to technical limitations, but a lot of the plot points are just lit imo, from being sent on an adventure to save the world by a priest in a church, to seeing people suffering or even dying from the villain's shenanagans, to using the triforce to fixing all of it(Even if that last part technically stops consequences from sticking, which is often an issue in other media). OOT unironically has nothing on it, and I think OOT's story is entirely fine if one ignores that it messes up the "I want to be a prequel to Alttp" business.

I went in to A Link to the Past expecting an amazing 2D Zelda title that I just have been sitting on saying that one day I would finally get around to playing it, but playing it for the first time and solving the puzzles in these old archaic dungeons, I actually found myself feeling like... that's it?... like I'll spend forever on one segment trying to solve the puzzle, only to find that it was just a straight forward and boring solution all along, like the door just opens once you've killed this enemy or moved this random block... it wasn't satisfying at all... Don't get me wrong, I love the whole atmosphere of Link having wanted posters because the new king says he's evil, the whole game has this more medieval dirty peasants vibe that's absent in future Zelda titles, I just had it built up in my head as the best Zelda next to the likes of Ocarina of Time, and I've played other 2D Zelda titles on GBA like Minish Cap and Four Swords, so I was expecting like this true masterpiece vanilla experience like Ocarina of Time that Minish Cap and Four Swords could never provide, but instead I got a surprisingly difficult game where I'm dying more often than I'm solving these simple unsatisfying puzzles... :P I ended up dropping the game after getting the master sword, which I'm told is only the true beginning, so kinda like when you play as Kid Link in Ocarina of Time? so I'll definitely have to pick this game up again, but now I know better and should expect that overcoming difficulty is the name of the game, not intricate and well made puzzle solving... Also side note, I played the game forever ago on an emulator as a kid, and when I entered the dark world and turned into a pink rabbit, I thought I had accidentally downloaded some weird game mod or something and stopped playing, it's only recently that I got back up to that point again and didn't remember any of it, all I knew now is that the pink rabbit thing is a normal part of the game... xD
