Why a 'Two-State Solution' in Israel/Palestine doesn't work | The Marc Steiner Show

The debate on a just future to end the Israeli occupation of Palestine has often pivoted around the question of a two-state or one-state solution. In a recent article for Foreign Affairs, four longtime proponents of the two-state solution make the case for why such an approach is no longer viable. Despite whatever high-minded ideals may have once motivated the search for a two-state solution, such dreams have become glaringly disconnected from the day-to-day reality of Palestinians living under occupation. Co-authors Nathan J. Brown and Shibley Telhami join The Marc Steiner Show to discuss why they are moving away from the two-state approach, and what principles would need to undergird a just and politically feasible solution to the occupation of Palestine.
Nathan J. Brown is Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University and a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Shibley Telhami is the Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland and a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution.

The problem is that the UN voted for Israel in 1948. So it's only the occupation that is illegal. Justice is another matter. Had the vote taken place after decolonisation and the vast increase of UN members, and after the USSR changed its mind, Israel would not have won the vote. We no longer endorse settler colonialism or ethnocracy as principles (though of course USA and allies support Zionism right or wrong)

I have family in refugee camps all over Palestine and people need to understand that Israel destroyed thousands of Palestinian villages, over 520 alone in 1947-1949. My aunt Huda Hawaja was killed in the Aida refugee camp down the street from where Jesus was born in Palestine. One of the Israeli soldiers responsible said on camera he was purifying the land and I have this uploaded to my channel so the world can see the truth.

My family all died in holocaust apart from those who came to America, and it is wrong how that is being weaponized now to negate criticism of the government of Israel. I am very worried about the way things are going on there, I know there are many people on both sides who aren’t being heard. Your family deserves freedom and housing and every amount of justice , I just worry that there is so much corruption in this cyclical beast-- my view on my ancestry has always been more in line with recognizing the dangers of supremacy from the nazis, not letting orthodoxy dictate my life. One of the main issues I see in human history is the clear lack of consequences for certain perpetrators of some very heinous and evil crimes throughout history. If there are no consequences for several very powerful Israeli's and the laws and crimes perpetrated against the Palestinians then there will be no peace. And while I'm not Palestinian I can't see why they would accept enshrining Israeli claims on land that were the homes of Palestinian relative's lives for decades. No consequences for the criminals no peace, human history tells us that over and over again. I appreciate your guests clear goal of resolving the issue in a serious manner but my above argument is one of the main reasons humanity cannot move forward. Humanity has to evolve and commit to involving everyone or lose our right to live as we do on this planet. We're running out of room, our planet is full and we're killing ourselves slowly whether we want to see it or not. No peace, no joy, increased greed and stress and hopelessness. It doesn't work.

I agree. The settlers are victims of own success. At this point one state for all citizens with equal rights is where we will end up eventually. It would be physically impossible now to carve out 2 states. It would take a strong joint police force for the first few years to lock up extremist on both sides but I would start out with everyone free to choose and hope they chose non criminal activity. At this point US politicians still spouting 2 state solution is just playing to the bases as they have to know its no longer possible and they are really calling for status quo to remain.

That's simply not possible..... And never will happen. As an Israeli myself I can tell you the best option would be 2 state. I work and live with many Arab Israeli and not a single one of them want an Arab ruler. They have zero confidence in any Arab leaders and most prefer in Israel life under Israeli government. It's not perfect but it's not dictatorship either. What examples of a prosperous free Arab nations do the Palestinian have ? None. Trust me . The Palenstinians didn't accept the UN approved partition in 47 and not any other two state solution offered to them since, and there were a few.
