With another Adesanya UFC title defense just around the corner I thought it would interesting to talk about why Izzy never won a major kickboxing title. And why it's smart to make a sport change if you see somewhere else your style can thrive.

What do you think of the fact Izzy didn't win a kickboxing title? Was it just a matter of time before he won one? Or was his fight style not ideal for kickboxing and it would have made things difficult?

As a former Karate guy that went over to Boxing afterwards and then Kickboxing this really resonated. In the transition to Boxing from Karate my movement was a big asset, and not having to worry about kicks and such I became very sucessful at being evasive and countering. But going over to Kickboxing/Muay Thai after that I found that I couldn't relly on my evasiveness precisely because the barrage would just go on until it caught up with me, as much as my counters connected, they wouldn't reset my opponent as well as when boxing.

I've has the same experience as a shotokan guy I would only move backwards and look for opportunities instead of pushing as much as I should but after a while I got used to pushing and my Karate movement really was useful alot of people only use movement for evasive maneuvers but its just as useful offensively

I went from Karate to Boxing too, before MMA, and felt the same positives/negatives. I also noticed how I went through the exact same fighting issues as Conor McGregor. When he focused on boxing, and he became heavy on his front foot, no longer using that karate movement. Exact same thing happened to me when I went back to boxing after MMA, then back to MMA again.

So what adjustments besides stance, weight placement and tactical readjustment of movement did you make to help you in the ring vs kickboxers? How would you halt, interrupt, or take advantage of the boxing, elbows, clinches, low kicks and knees barrages MMA, Muay Thai heads and ( without the elbows ) kickboxers tend to use? What if you're short like me ( 5'7" ) regularly sparring with professional 6+footers?
@MorganHStewart
@MorganHStewart 2 жыл бұрын
@@ATACXGYMCAPOEIRA not sure who you were specifically asking, but for me in regards to MMA, I simply became a 'strong' wrestler. And by that, I mean physically strong. If I ever became overwhelmed, I'd wrestler them. More often than not, they couldn't compete with my wrestling as I was physically much stronger, and could easily hold them down, keep position, gas them out and do as I please. I emphasised my point in being physically strong, as this helps when needing to compensate for lack of wrestling skills... which is what I needed to do lol.

Izzy has good stand up especially for MMA. He was good in Kickboxing but it seemed every time he stepped to the elite he came up short. Could be because Izzy always planned on going to MMA and the elite in Kickboxing typically aren’t planning on moving to MMA so all they do is train in striking. If you look at his Kickboxing wins none were against elite strikers. All his losses were. He was just a notch below elite I would say in Kickboxing but still very good. It's mentioned in the video. His style is pretty much tailor made for MMA. You might have noticed that MMA fighters generally are bad in the pocket because you'll either initiate a grappling exchange or be the one trying to get out of it. Adesanya has always been good at fighting at range. Being a long fighter, he gets to pick his shots and he can see takedowns coming better and doesn't have to worry too much about clinching, trips, throws etc. The term is thrown around far too much but distance management is the name of the game in MMA. In kickboxing, you could walk throw some stuff with a good guard but that is pretty non existent in MMA. High guard and a grappler will put you on your ass. The octagon is about 746 sq ft in size as opposed to 576 sq ft maximum in KB. Tactically very different. To top it off, IA talks about Anderson Silva as his idol. Should speak volumes about what he's actually into.

@@LifeAndDef do you think you can just get signed to the ufc and your first fight will be against the champ? No you have to work through the rankings in your weight class like every other combat sport, I’d love to see cross promotional title bouts better the ufc and bellator or ONE but that’ll most likely never happen. But what MMA doesn’t need is 10 different lightweight belts all held by different people and then that gets held up by unifications/injury/one governing body having different rankings so we don’t know who should actually fight for the belt, it would be a terrible mess. Tldr you don’t know anything about mma rankings and belts.

I believe their plan with kickboxing promotion was fill the stadium with kickboxing fans. Then hope they stay to watch the MMA card and become a fan of that sport. MMA was not as popular as kickboxing in Italy, Hungary, etc (at least that's how it was explained to me).

The fact is, the MMA fighters aren't technically as good in striking as the Glory fighters so Israel looks like Roy Jones against them.

Well Israel is celebrated as one of the best kickboxers in mma, while Valentina Schevchenko who held a major world title (Kunlun) is kind of overshadowed. Anyway, I am so happy for Israel's jump to mma, he is a gem

could be another solution instead of kickboxing to MMA. for example from kickboxing to muay thai with mma gloves? like with one fc? or is that not comparable🤔

Gokhan Saki crossed over to kickboxing, and did shite. That high guard, heavy footed stance doesn't do too well when people can dive for your legs and slip punches through your guard of 4OZ gloves. Kickboxers who have transitioned well into MMA have been slick, evasive and use their eyes for defense more than heavily relying on the guard. Fighters like Stephen Thompson, Israel Adesanya and Cory Sandhagen.

Adensanya saw the level of strikers in MMA and thought this is a done deal I’m just gonna style on these wrestlers and grapplers. If he wouldve stayed in kickboxing he would’ve probably fought Alex 5 times already by now.

Whittaker is so likeable. I'm hoping Adesanya's personality is mostly for show. I fought with him on GLORY but never actually spoke with him so I can't comment how he actually is.

Not a fan of Israel, but I hope it will be a good fight, nontheless. Adesanya is good, but not great. Sometimes, it's like he doesn't want to actually win his fights. Romero fight, he touched his leg. Vettori fight, spent more time clowning than capitalizing on the opportunities, and again, touched his leg. Jan fight, he didn't give it all when he was clearly behind on points. I get the "he was never in danger" comments, but so the guys I mentioned above. Now, I believe that's normal when it comes to world champions fighting, it becomes more of a "do just what it takes to keep the belt" type of fighting and I do respect it. Make no mistake, I like it when a champion displays masterful performances that sets him levels above of the competition, I just do not like all ways of doing it. I do not pay much attention to what most people say, as a matter of fact, I tend not to follow the mass, I don't think Adesanya is that impressive.
