People don't think about how important airflow is for a unit to work. The craziest setup I've seen was in a million dollar house back in the late 90's. The upstairs unit was a 3 ton system. It had 2 returns run with 12 inch flex duct. The problem was that the air had to go up a wall chase that was 2 by 14 inches for each return. The installer couldn't figure out why the unit would ice up in less than an hour if it was running constantly. If they ran the fan full time they could run the AC for about half an hour at a time and keep it from freezing but that wouldn't keep it cool once the outside temperature reached 80.

Can airflow issues cause a fan to vibrate? When heating, the fan on my system will get noisy. But if the fan is "on" (running on full power, I guess), then the vibrating stops.

So true about filters and to make this particular house an example of lack of maintenance, those new returns that have the filter in the ceiling are the most convenient ones to change and monitor ! Folks really need to have a case of filters on hand and simply change filters every summer and winter as a rule if they don't want to inspect them now and then. They must run that upper system all of the time...it's truly dirty for less than two years of use.

Yeah I'm stressing over my air filter with increased pollen in the air. I have a basic filter which works great for air flow but sucks for cleaning the air of pollen. I think the MERV 8 filter drops the pressure too much and makes the AH work harder.

Look into getting a Solace Air cleaner. Thats what i always reccomend at my work as an HVAC technician, and i have one installed in my home. find a company that installs them. They work like a swiffer by using a fiberglass media pumped full of electricity, will catch down to .3 microns and below, and has amazing air flow. you only gotta change the media every 3 months and it costs like 80 - 100 dollars yearly for medias. heres a video kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3qtiGOdlLV2hcU

Hey Ted, what Merv rating would you say is best? I work in the desert southwest, a very dusty place. A LOT of guys recommend Merv 1 filters for “optimal air flow & performance”. Seems like i come across many jobs with dirty coils & customers are ALWAYS using those cheap filters. Yet people argue with me when I tell them those filters are garbage in a place like southern Arizona.

Home Depot has the Rheem FPR 4 air filters that are really good. They fit snug to. You can get a 3 pack for $9.99. I change them monthly. I’ve found that these are a good balance of airflow and filtering. Just my opinion.
@josiahpierson3636
@josiahpierson3636 2 жыл бұрын
I think you should get the best filtration that you can, if there's duct work problems though you gotta lower your merv rating down but then you might get a plugged up coil because your filter isn't catching enough. It's a double edge sword and difficult question unless you have really good ductwork. I like the 4 inch aprilaire merv13s personally
@hjc4604
@hjc4604 2 жыл бұрын
@@josiahpierson3636 You're right! 4 inch filters are the way to go. At least a MERV 11. You should also oversize the return filter box/grill. And make sure your return duct(s) are correctly sized and installed. Flex duct is supposed to be pulled straight and taut with metal duct for direction changes.

Ted, as an armchair quarterback, I just have to ask about the thermostat wire on the condensing unit. Why would the connections be made outside the electrical panel? The wire nuts being upside down, will hold water like a thimble, and that wire isn't UV protected. I know mixing HV and LV wiring in that compartment isn't the best either but I would think in the long run the cabling will corrode much quicker being in the elements. 😎👍

Obviously It is a Heat Pump so with TRANE if you have a TAM air handler with the blower profile set to ENHANCED for better dehumidification, you have to let it run a while so that the blower cycles through the 50 80 100 ramping profile to properly evaluate the refrigerant charge. First 1.5 mins 50% speed, next 7 at 80% then 100% speed. Now TRANE sets the charge by designed SUBCOOL, BUT you still need to be checking SUPERHEAT to determine whether you have an air flow issue or metering problem! Your SUBCOOL may be on the money but if your SUPERHEAT IS LOW OR HIGH WHILE YOUR SUBCOOL IS GOOD that will tell you where to look! ALWAYS CHECK SUPERHEAT AND SUBCOOLING WHEN EVALUATING THE REFRIGERANT CHARGE, JUST BECAUSE YOUR SUBCOOL IS GOOD DOES NOT MEAN THERE IS NOT A PROBLEM! ALSO ALWAYS CHECK YOUR STATIC ACROSS THE DUCT SYSTEM, TO QUANTIFY YOUR AIR FLOW! SIMPLE WAY TO RULE OUT AIRFLOW ISSUES! NOTICE HIS GAUGES, HE IS NOT CHECKING SUPERHEAT! IF YOU ARE GOING TO THE TROUBLE OF HOOKING UP GAUGES, ESPECIALLY DIGITAL GAUGES, IT ONLY TAKES 10 MORE SECONDS TO HOOK UP THE SUCTION LINE TEMP CLAMP TO READ SUPERHEAT! BUT AS YOU HAVE SEEN, TED INSTALLED TRANE'S CHEAP LOW END METAL CABINET AIR HANDLER AND DID NOT COMMUNICATE PROPERLY TO THE HOMEOWNER, WHEN THE UNIT WAS INSTALLED, THAT HE STILL NEEDED A FILTER IN THE ORIGINAL RETURN GRILL!
