Braid has terrible abrasion resistance. That being said, I’m fully a convert. The small diameter and minimal stretch won me over (especially in heavy current with long casts) and I’ve been a mono guy my whole life. Just bump it against a rock and it’ll start to get fuzzy though. You can always tie on a leader if that’s a concern.

You don't buy braid for abrasion it's the best line to know when you have a bite has very low memory so line stays good way longer than any other line out of all line braid has the best upside

People that say braid has terrible abrasion resistance is wrong I caught a 20lb snapper in the Susquehanna river using cut bait from a bass using 40lb braid and I brought it in easily but after 2 mins of getting him out of the water he chewed the line and broke it showing braid has decent abrasion resistance unlike monofilament when if it gets a little tiny Nick in the line it cuts the lb test into half to 75% worst then what it's supposed to be.... he also saying use 25lb braid which is wrong for a baitcaster because of digging when you got a big fish or even a medium fish so use 40lb or even 70lb I have messed up by using 20lb braid and I got constantly digging and then digging leads to breaking everything else this man said was good but the low braid test I mean if your fishing for very small fish then sure but anything over 4lbs don't do it .....love the vid

New here: my casting reel has holes in the spool to tie string too. So why not just attach direct, since it’s not a reel that doesn’t have the holes, and may just spin? I want a line roughy enough to fish in heavy cover, like Lilly pads, etc.
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors Жыл бұрын
You can definitely tie right to the holes, but the backing line will keep the entire spool of braid from spinning. Just a small amount of backing will keep it from sliding. If you used straight mono or fluoro no backing line is needed. It will grab the spool and not slide like the braid can.

@Steve Rogers Outdoors I recently got my first bait caster, the recommended line rating is 6-15 lbs is it good to put a 30 lb braid on the reel?
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Sure can. The diameter of braid is a lot smaller than mono. I use 50lb braid most of the time. Great question!
@DirtRoadRemedy
@DirtRoadRemedy 2 жыл бұрын
New to Baitcasting here. Why not just put less braid on instead of using a backing? like use a half spool of braid if that's all you want? Also, is it true that you shouldn't use less than a 20 lb braid on baitcasters? Thanks, I've learned more on youtube than any other source by far!
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Excellent questions! The mono backing is to keep the braid from slipping on the spool. Braid is so slick it won’t grab the spool and hold fast. The mono won’t rotate around the spool like braid will. Most folks like to go at least 20 pound so it casts easier. 20 lb braid has approximately the same line diameter as 6 pound mono. I hope this helps.

@@SteveRogersOutdoors thank you! I got an Abu Garcia Max X with a KastKing Blackhawk 2 recently and am mostly throwing light lures. A 10 pound braid was recommended to me but I had a snag recently and the line really dug into itself on the reel. I should try a 20 pound, just wanted to make sure it doesn't affect casting too much. Getting better at casting the lighter stuff.

Hey Steve. How are you? Got a question for you. I recently got a Lewis crush combo. The pole says line max is 25 lbs. I want to use 50 pound braid. Can I put that on the baitcaster set up? Or should I get a heavy rod and reel set up? Thanks. Also I don’t fish in a lot cover most of the time, so do I really need 50lbs.
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
50lb braid should be fine on that combo. I'm guessing you got the Medium Heavy rod with that combo? If so, it will work great with that pound test braid.

@mathewshackelford8037
@mathewshackelford8037 6 ай бұрын
@@cdennarddennard usually the line rating being low like that is indicative of it being for mono because the line diameter wouldn't allow you to get enough line for anything with a pound rating higher than that. I run 50 and 60 lb braid on all my baitcasters with zero issues, and I don't run a backing on the spool either.

I’ve heard wrapping a bit of tape on the spool will help from the braid slipping off the spool. Is that true?
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
A lot of anglers will put a piece of tape on the spool. I do that on my spinning reels. Just be sure to tape the end of the braid down. On my baitcasters I prefer to use the mono backing, but the tape will work.
