I hated Helen for Andy. Peggy was my favorite for him.

My favorite girlfriend of Andy's was definitely Peggy. There's too many episodes where Helen was mad at Andy for various reasons. I also recall several times when even Ellie got mad at Andy (but not nearly as many times as Helen). But Peggy was pretty, fun, and carefree. I only know of 1 time she was angry at Andy (and even then, it was only because Opie manipulated circumstances to try to break her & Andy up.) It was a shame that Peggy left the show for whatever reason. She was perfect for Andy. Even if she & Andy had waited years to marry, she could have been his steady girlfriend instead of Helen.

Ellie always seemed a little too young for Andy. But I agree with you about Helen though. She was way too stuffy, boring, & argumentative. But they say Andy Griffith had a romantic relationship with her so she remained on the show. (I read that originally her character was not meant to last for more than 1 or 2 episodes.)

Ellie was slightly too young for andy. But it was not like the age gap was enough for her to be his daughter. I think Ellie, Peggy, or the county nurse Mary (even though she was portrayed by two different actresses would have been a good match for andy. Helen was nearly always argumentative and complaining, and sour.

I heard an interview with Elinor Donahue (who played Ellie). She was very gracious about her time on the show. She said many lines written for the Ellie character were ultimately switched to Don Knotts. She said she was not upset about that because he was much funnier saying the lines than she had been. I think she said it was agreed that she just wasn’t a “fit” for that series and cast, so they dropped her character. She told a really nice story about the song “Away In A Manger” she sang with Andy for the Christmas episode where “Ben” was so hateful but ultimately was charmed by the sheriff and others. She felt she did not sing well enough to do a duet. Andy asked her to just go rehearse it with him. After they rehearsed he confessed he’d told them to surreptitiously record it and that recording was used for the show, so she just had to lip sync it. She spoke highly of him.

when Ellie was angry it was for good reason.....Hellen on the other hand just came across like it was in her nature to be angry if it was for good reason or not.

Rose got married in the first episode, of course that was the only episode she was on. I suspect Andy (Taylor) went through so many girlfriends because Andy (Griffith) was girl crazy and liked having different pretty gals as love interests on the show. Ellie was my fave because she was a little spitfire! But you're right, when Helen got mad she could be a beast! I hope and pray you get well soon!

I guess Anita wouldn’t want to marry after she broke up a marriage. She wanted to keep her job as a steady working actress so why not hit on the boss. Read somewhere she was caught with him in his room while he was still married. My favorite female character was Mary.

Marriage is often cited as a shark jump. I Dream Of Jeannie comes to mind. Another example is Rhoda. Valerie Harper noted that the writers had trouble dealing with a married couple. She said that years later Mad About You successfully handled it. Helen Crump often showed a mean streak. Look how often she got jealous. Every so often she was right to be assertive. One example came when Andy was reluctant to let the new doctor operate on Opie. Then again, he should have included Opie in the discussion. After all, those were his tonsils. Jack Dodson was right about situations. TV viewers don't care for even fictional characters neglecting their families. David Hasslehoff said that was one reason Baywatch Nights didn't do better. Mitch was leaving his son home alone while he fought crime at night.

Sorry. I so disagree with your analysis of why Andy Taylor never got married and settled for Helen. Use to call her Miss Grump. To me her character was so sober. However I suppose she fit Andy for his color seasons as he turned from the fun laid back hometown sheriff in the first and second black and white shows to a mean grump himself in the colored ones. Andy Griffith acted like he didn't want to be there as he was getting tired of the character, and was enticed back after the 5th season by TV exects to do more shows. The character of Ellie Walker was perfect for the Andy Taylor of the first seasons, however actress Elinor Donahue and Andy Griffith felt uncomfortable as a couple because of their age diffrence. Really I think that's why she left. Never the less she was great as Andy's love interest and my favorite. As for the other lady's Karen, Mary and Peggy all fit Sheriff Taylor well, especially Peggy, for the type of character he played. Had the show ended the fifth season as Andy Griffith had planned, even Helen Grump...ehhhhh I mean Helen Crump would not have married him The show would have just ended with Andy still being a bachelor father.
