Great video but I completely disagree. I don’t believe consumers believed the annual showcases of automobiles, televisions or vacuum cleaners were for the people who purchased the LAST YEAR’S MODEL. Especially in high volume and highly competitive markets. Niche products can upgrade more slowly. Manufacturers also know the average refresh cycle for their products. The latest arrivals are there to temp the people with OLDER, potentially outdated and less capable versions. Every year SOMEONE will need to upgrade. It’s hard to get people to buy your product if it hasn’t changed in 3 years when another manufacturer makes small improvements year over year. KZbin channels presented quick, easy content comparing the latest model against the one they typically had on hand. It was fast, brainless content a channel could upload the second they had the newest version in hand.

It’s actually the reason Apple is still relevant.

Been saying this for a few years. Skip a few cycles and create an even hungrier iPhone crazy crowd. Impresses Shareholders the most.

Agreed. Apple has shifted their revenue and focus onto digital services now as well.

The thing is that there is no “right time” for an upgrade. We know product developers will work on something until it is perfect, which it never is. Then, analysts and media blast Apple for failing to upgrade products, saying that they are long in the tooth and due for an upgrade. So, if companies like Apple don’t have a predictable upgrade cycle, will they ever manage to push out a new product? If they have all the time they want, then there is no pressure or incentive to get something done and released. If Apple is late and Samsung or Qualcomm beat them to the punch with new devices, chips or software, analysts and the media will blast Apple for failing to innovate and for falling behind. Also, Apple capitalizes on the excitement around a new device. When was the last time anyone got excited about a new Google or Samsung product? No, annual is the right way to go with products that form the core of Apple’s business. Things like AirPods Pro are tangential and can be upgraded whenever. Sorry to be a contrarian to what is clearly a popular idea. Love the show, Bridget. I hope you keep it up and don’t lose interest.

No way Bridget… I NEED my new iPhone every year not just software, but I do get what you’re saying. Now, I’m off to buy me a new alarm clock, even though I haven’t had one for probably over 10 years, but this one is super cute!!
@klaviator7547Ай бұрын
The good thing about not launching new phone every year is that , like this year , we often skips the upgrade and wait for a better one because we know every year they gonna release a new one , a better one ( hopefully ) Without an annual release , some of us will just get it even though the improvements are minor cuz you don’t know when the next model will be out The cons will be losing market share as your competitor will be launching new tech every year
@richmarmon7223Ай бұрын
They've already started that with iPad. To wit - iPad Air 4 (2020), 5 (2022), 6 (2024), for example. I don't upgrade my iPhone every year and don't feel I'm missing much year to year.

I hate how reviewers always assume that people are upgrading to the new iPhone from last years model. My sister just bought the 16 and upgraded from a XR. If you’re in the market for a new phone you want a “new” model each year.

And i thought that all the pre 2015 folks have left CNEt. Very happy to see you Bridget Carey. I had stopped watching cnet altogether when your video came in as recommendations
@Paul-qq7gpАй бұрын
They won't stop yearly iPhone releases as it's their biggest revenue driver. And they will always want something to launch in September as it ramps up to the holidays/Christmas. If anything, I think they should update each line every second year. Pro's one year, the regular models the next.
@ahughanАй бұрын
Great point Bridget. Let the hardware roll out when it’s really ready and you’re right we don’t need a new phone every year.

I think a 2-3 year cycle makes sense based on people’s carrier cycles. If we have to wait for a grander upgrade each cycle, I think it’s worth the wait. And focus on grander software upgrades each year.

As soon as the iPhone came out I made 6 predictions. 1) Obesity rate would go up 2) Opioid epidemic would go up 3) Teen depression would go up 4) Accidents from texting would go up 5) Audiologists would get rich from earbud damage and Orthopedists would get rich from neck bent damage from staring at cancer phone. 6) The life expectancy in the USA would go down. All my predictions were exact. Survival of the fittest types like Warren Buffett still use a flip phone.
@jbradkilpatrickАй бұрын
At this point, I completely agree. The iPhone is a mature product. The advances aren’t big enough to do one every year.
@kidd6759Ай бұрын
They should do like car companies. Come out with the model/ hardware for that generation and that generation goes for 3-5 years. They should also release chips every year and maybe do mid generation refresh/facelift for hardware.
@HumanStateOfEmergencyАй бұрын
I own a Samsung Z Fold 3 and once again I saw no reason to upgrade to the 6. The changes they make to phones nowadays do not justify the price.

I think with all the chip shortages we’ve seen in the tech industry, it might be a good idea for companies to stop racing to a never ending finish line and slow down, and actually deliver experiences people want on their devices. With so few real upgrades year on year with each phone iteration, they should maybe consider a two year gap or more on their iPhone models, make sure that they’re future proofed which they’re pretty good at doing, but deliver a product that’s actually light years ahead of what came before, not just a minimal upgrade. Apple and Samsung have huge consumer bases, people buy up their devices, but they should focus on software being feature complete and focus on the user experience.
@gabemcguire2463Ай бұрын
I have nothing against the yearly release cycle, but I feel people should stop trying to get the newest phone every year. Most people upgrade every few years. By having a new release every year, different people can have a new device when it feels right for them. What I’d really like to see is a rethinking of WWDC. I like that they announce API updates for developers at once, but I don’t like how they announce platform updates for consumers that don’t come out with the initial version of a new OS (like AI coming in 18.1). I wish updates came out on a rolling basis and new features weren’t announced until closer to release. It would make it more exciting when they come and avoid the feeling of waiting forever for them.
@pqXbdXpqАй бұрын
To be fair, i think Apple doesn’t expect people to upgrade their iPhones every year! A new iPhone’s customer is someone who has had their iPhone for 3-4 years and is ready for an upgrade. Yearly upgraders and android switchers are an added advantage.

AI has also been in phones for several years and not just for pictures. My old phone from 2019 also used it to optimize the phone to improve battery life allowing it to last for a full three days between charges with a lot of KZbin. My current phone from 2021 just got a full AI assistant with a software update and it isn't even from a big brand (I ditched the larger brands this time).
@hwcanotabotАй бұрын
That would make so much sense. I feel it’ll create enough anticipation to potentially boost demand to have more people upgrade every launch. Right now it’s become a bit too monotonous and the upgrades aren’t that meaningful anyway. 2 year cycle with in person presentations please❤
@1934jacksonАй бұрын
Honestly when phones were like $700 and below the yearly drops worked. But apple isn’t changing anything and now they’ve over promised with apple intelligence. Apple needs to rethink their marketing and understand that most people don’t have $1000 or more every year for a new iPhone with no new features.
@jimsommers4701Ай бұрын
I don’t fully agree about the Nintendo hype. Most were hoping for a new switch, but got an alarm clock I know I will never buy. Apple should just make sure the product is ready before release.

I’m a fan of the iPhone and have been for quite some time. I believe if Apple decides to release an iPhone on a two year cycle, they will start charging for updated or even IOS. Just my thoughts.🤷♂️
@shiblijanjua9094Ай бұрын
Couldn’t agree more. Funny that I was thinking along the same lines for a few days because all those iPhone 16 reviews on KZbin saying not much was anew. Apple needs to take time to make great products and for that it can’t be every year like a clockwork !!

Absolutely agree! There’s no point in launching new iPhones each year. Kills the excitement! Wait for a couple of year & bring in something worthy of being called an upgrade!

apple literally needs to rename all their products with a mac prefix like the macbook > macbook = bookos iphone > macphone = phoneos ipad > macpad = pados apple watch > macwatch = watchos imac > macpc = pcos apple vision > macvision = visionos airpods > macpods airtag > mactag apple tv > mactv = tvos
