Last week a lady hit the doors of my bus continuously with an umbrella handle as I was pulling away. The noise was so loud I stopped and let her on but I wasn't impressed as it caused me stress. I still have to deal with fares and four people wanted to pay for a 1.50 fare with 20 pound notes. People always complain about us and I am currently suspended because I had a meltdown as a passenger abused me and assaulted me. I have autism and even I get no respect. It annoys me because train drivers get paid three times as much and don't have to deal with what bus drivers have to deal with. Bus driving is not a good job.

I drive buses in Australia, if someone can't pay, or their card doesn't have enough credit I won't deny them a ride. This is purely because I believe you create your own trouble, if someone seems agitated it's not worth creating a scenario that could turn violent. It's easier to let them on, but in saying that, it does not take long to figure out the serial pests that constantly try and ride for free. In those instances I just won't let them on period eg. Refuse to open the doors...

Hello Anton, Some remarkable headlines in the news in Holland today. The former secretary of state Mr. Teeven (Dutch Ministry of Justice) found a new job: bus driver! Many people were surprised. Most politicians get very well paid jobs when they leave the political arena. But Mr. Teeven follows his passion: he wants to be a bus driver. He passed all the examinations and is ready to start. Dutch bus companies are very happy to see the former Secretary of State in the uniform of a bus driver. There is a real shortage of bus drivers. They hope that more people will follow their hearts and become a bus driver. So if you bus drivers in England are so miserable: come to Holland. Bus life here is really wunderfull.

In the summer of 2017, when I met Anton at the end of the line for the #12 Dulwich route that he was driving, he was not miserable at all. He was very nice and surprised that I was still on his bus.I was riding random buses all over London to the end of their routes for sightseeing purposes. Anton made sure that I got back to London by bus safely. We had a nice conversation and he spoke in an American English accent for me, and he told me a lot of funny stories. I shared with him my experiences on city buses in Chicago and Minneapolis. I am American.

I found it to be certain 'Routes' rather then the job itself. On one particular duty number I used to run an 05:35 service from hedge end to city. Same passengers daily. Whole bus was a social gathering rather then a bus route. We all knew eachother by name. Got out my cab, spoke to everyone as if I were their coach driver, I always had time for them. I didn't think of it as a bus route. Yet later on in exactly the same day on a busy council estate route I'd pick up unemployed scum who would get on with 20 kids and 10 prams swearing and spitting about jobcentre plus and how they cut their benefits this week, treat me like a piece of shit because they got benefit sanctioned, kick my cab door because I spotted an invalid ticket and the next day I'd be back on the merry morning bus route! It wasn't all bad!!!

Well, only one company has double decker buses here in Finland(aka Onnibus, owner is a Scottish billionaire Brian Souter). Our buses are mostly Volvo and Scania made. When going the long-haul, companies use something like Volvo 9700. In local traffic buses are something like Kabus tc6a4 (kabus is a Finnish company). Differences are that we don't have safety doors(or whatever they are called) for drivers. Anybody can attack us and there's nothing we can do about it. I believe only Helsinki(capital city) buses have. All the buttons I've noticed British buses have are more simplified and easier to understand in Finnish buses. Also we still use cash and there is no end to it and I don't think there never will. We also have so many damn cards people can get discount from prices, It's unbelievable. I don't think that in side by side comparison they'd differ much, but just seeing in a video or elsewhere it's a whole new universe to understand. Also driving on the left lane goes over my head. I had never heard of Kebu before you mentioned it. I mostly listen to Heavy metal(Nightwish, Amorphis etc). Just out of curiosity, after Brexit referendum, did anything change or will it change any laws for bus drivers? Finland follows EU's strict laws of how long can one person drive per day and such. It is followed by digital tachograph.

We have to deal with horrible passengers that pay with £20 notes for a silly little fare. We have to deal with unruly kids. The management don't back us up and discipline us for the least little thing. Bus drivers also suffer health problems because of the job. This is just some of the reasons why we are so miserable. We have to deal with passengers that want to complain about us. We get sworn at. We often do 12 hour shifts, sometimes starting at 5am and finishing at 1am. The pay isn't that great. The bus industry has the highest number of sick days per year and it isn't too hard to see why. Being a bus driver is like being in combat mode. It is stressful and tiring. The 'yellow line' is the line at the back of the driver's cab because no one should stand on the platform at the front doors as this is a health and safety issue. Worst thing they ever did was make buses OMO (one man operation). Bus drivers should be paid the same as train drivers and be left to get on with driving.

Every passenger needs to watch your videos. As fellow bus driver here in the US, I can totally relate. I drive a route that is every 12 mins. People see the bus and try to run for it, some times dodging cars when crossing the street. Not having money or a ticket ready, etc. really chaps my hide😠. As mentioned people pounding on the door or even attempting to step in front of a moving bus. Sorry but you missing a bus ride is NOT worth your life or me losing my job cause you got dragged under the bus as I'm pulling away from the curb. I'm for customer service, but passenger and bus safety takes precedence. Just cause the bus is at the stop with doors shut does not mean you can board. The driver maybe looking in the mirrors so he/she may pull into traffic. For those passengers who do watch his videos, I would like you understand something. We try to maintain our headways (schedule). So when we wait for you and then later on you complain the bus is late don't complain to the driver. I would like passengers to understand we the driver's do not write the bus schedules we only try to follow the schedule and operate the bus in a safe manner. In short don't take it out on us.

Hello Anton from a fellow Bus driver of Preston SC Bus. I use to have a lot of door bangers when I was working in Manchester 8 years ago, even had one prat kicking and punching the bus doors whilst I was pulling away at Piccadilly on a busy Saturday night. It is very dangerous as one slip off the pavement could (and has happened in the past with some passengers being too close to moving buses) have a passenger run over by the from or back wheels. There was a instance many moons ago when a woman was cut in half when she slipped and ended up under a wheel of a bus whilst her husband watched helplessly so people should take extreme care at bus stops. Our float was supplied by the company but now no longer and so we have to use our own money which is usually only £20 in change. Customers don't realise when they try to slip a few foreign coins or fake notes to save money they are robbing the bus driver not the bus company. And most of the time I try to always be a very happy and polite Driver :-)

Got my Digicard, bought a map book, a few interviews later I shook hands with a coach hire company and never looked back at this work. Been there done that worn the T-shirt with you guys. Bored Saturday and Sunday afternoon kids with skateboards stopping my bus to 'Hang on' the back engine flap or putting my Windows through with stones and missiles. Swearing and spitting at my cab window because they flopped me a £20 note and I flopped them a change ticket. Passengers Kicking my doors or punching the window because I pulled out into traffic and apparently 'Forgot' about them. Passengers threatening to complain about me to the company because two passengers argued and fought with eachother and I didn't play head master and intervene. Kicking my cab door because they tried to use an invalid ticket and I spotted it and refused to carry them unless they pay. Arguments over wheelchairs and buggies. Arguments with the 08:50 elderly trying to use their OAP passes before 09:00. I'm so glad I don't put up with that anymore but feel sorry for those who do.

Bus drivers are miserable because they work long hours for little pay, the working conditions are not great, the shift pattern can be all over the place, people complain all the time, management give bus drivers no support, passengers give bus drivers abuse, car drivers are inconsiderate. The job can't be that great because most drivers that leave never come back to the job. It's not a good job.

Bus Driver Johnny: I can understand that a lot, but it is sometimes also annoying for the passenger. It can be a problem for foreigners like me, when you just took some money from an ATM and the smallest note you get is a 20£ - note. And it is late, but you want to take a bus. I feel sorry for that inconvenience, but sometimes it cannot be avoided unfortunately. Anyway, up to now I was so lucky to meet only very nice bus drivers in the UK!

I am a bus driver and have been for 16 years with two breaks in that time. I don't want to do it for much longer as the job is stressful and the pay doesn't reflect that. The reason why we can be miserable is because we are starting and stopping by being in and out of bus stops all day and this takes its toll, car drivers and van drivers cut us up and drive at us, passengers get on the bus and give us abuse for various reasons, pedestrians and cyclists walk and cycle at us and we have to take evading action, supervisors report us for the least little thing, managers discipline us as soon as someone complains even when we have done no wrong, we work irregular shift patterns and sometimes only have 8.5 hours between shifts, the buses can be uncomfortable and noisy and cause us injury, the pay is not that great, we have to deal with traffic congestion which makes us late and this results in passengers moaning/abusing us and then we lose some of our break time, we have to handle money and if we are short it comes out of our wages plus more reasons. The turn over of bus drivers is high and it's no surprise. I've known drivers to just finish training and then walk out because they simply can't handle the job. If I could go back in time, there is no way I would have become a bus driver. The job is crap.

"Yellow line" sounds to me like the particular company has some sort of mark on the floor of the bus that they ask passengers not to step beyond while the bus is in motion so as to not distract the driver (some have stickers affixed to the back panel of the cab asking passengers to not stand forward of this point, instead). I'm a new viewer, so I'm not yet sure how your company chooses to deal with that distraction for it's drivers.

Ey up, Anton. I'm in Grimsby, where Stagecoach provide a £10 float. Our singles are £1.65 so the float should be more than adequate, but a good burst of notes can clean you out. I personally put an extra £10 of my own money in, and I rarely get any problems - even on rural routes where, apparently, passengers haven't heard of change, haha! I figure doing this is easier than dealing with the hassle that comes with explaining you've got no change or messing about with a change voucher (even if they're so satisfying to issue XD).

Hi Anton, great video as always. You can have a float with the company I drive for but it's not issued by them, you have to use your own money. You also have to declare how much you carry in case an inspector boards. Some drivers carry £50 (one driver I know carries £70 of his own money) and others carry nothing and issue a change voucher every time. On the one hand the company are saying you're not obligated to carry/give change but on the other they want to give 'great customer service'. Hopefully the move towards contactless in the next few years will do away with this issue. But that's a whole other topic of conversation.

I drive buses in Cornwall. Got given a £20 float to start with in the form of a £20 note. Usually turn up to work with anywhere between £5 to £10 float. Some days I'm miserable some days I'm happy. Some days I turn up to work happy and I'm broken within 5 minutes of driving a bus due to cars just not letting you through and causing a jam. The irony of.people wanting you to explain why you're late always gets me. The stresses of the job can be endless... hence why I do lates. In Cornwall I pretty much just drive seats around after 6pm. As one of my colleagues say "an empty bus is a happy bus"

I drove busses for three years out of Catford garage in the late 90’s , Leyland Titans/Olympians mainly, the job ,once trained is simple enough to perform, but two rounders as we called them, actually four..’trips’…is the best part of four hours of stop start stop start every minute or so, this after the aforementioned duration is actually very fraying, I wouldn’t say stressful really but if you lose the plot with the job, it’s utterly fatiguing, the busses were well designed for this multiple stopping and starting, simple to operate, but some drivers are tired as well
