Yeah, everybody knows that the Aventador and it's variants can go faster than 217 mph. Or as you said, Ferrari, they pretty much have 3 top speeds they'll always give, 217 mph for the flagship like the LaFerrari, which may have been true back with the Enzo that has a top speed of 217 mph; 211 mph for their front engined V12's like the 812 and 205 for the mid engine cars like the F8 or 296. And it makes more sense in Km/h, because those speeds translate to 350 Km/h, 340 Km/h and 330 Km/h. It's just neat to order them in that way even when pretty much every car in their line up can go faster than their stated top speeds, because there is no way an F8 Tributo is just 3 mph faster than a 458 Italia.

All really good points! I think the only thing you forgot to mentioned was the technology of aero dynamics. Cars back then didn’t focus on downforce as much as they do now. Aero creates drag which a big factor on lower top speeds but in return provides more grip, confidence, cornering speed, and safety for the driver. Newer cars like the civic type R and the Porsche GT3 RS have literally tons of aero bits. The GT3 RS I believe has even a slightly lower top speed than the standard GT3. Anyways, great video!!

The concorde didn't HAVE to fly supersonic, it was banned cause the flight law people (forgot the name of the organisation) didn't like it from the beginning, when it crashed it was the final straw. Also the only complaint that people had was noise, the noise could break windows, not only top speed
@ARockyRock Жыл бұрын
it was more involved than that from what I've heard flying at supersonic speeds requires really powerful engines so the fuel cost was insane, literally exponentially more than that of a regular jet such that the cost/distance was more than that of a normal passenger jet. add on top of that the high maintainence costs and then the bad press from mechanical failures and wrecks leading to decreased demand and increased ticket prices and it quickly becomes completely cost ineffective to run it

Today I had to take a manual Nissan Sentra to the DMV to get inspected, and then take it to a nearby ford dealership to pick up some car parts for the auto shop I work at. So being a person in the aviation field, there is also more to the Concorde, another major limitation to it is that at some point it still has to join other planes in an airspace for approaches and landings, so it has to slow down when nearing the destination, its a smaller point but I think similarly to cars, at some point, the fastest you can go in a car on a road is only as fast as the next car.
@MJ-uk6lu Жыл бұрын
And to be fair, there's really no point in buying a faster car as you are not supposed to either accelerate, stop or corner faster than anyone else as you will be more likely cause dangerous situations on road. I have to point out how much tire technology has carried the improvements we have seen in lap times. For example if you mod an old Ferarri F2004 with modern F1 tires, it can go similar lap times if not faster. The increase in weight and size of modern cars makes sports cars significantly slower unless you put crazy tires and aero on it which the later drastically lowers top speeds.

For as much as Dodges get called heavy boats have you seen how cramped a Hellcat's engine is even under that massive hood? To Some extent yes because it can't be _too low_ otherwise gearing will become totally effed up and the car would actually become too unreliable and stressed at high RPMs all the time. So you have to still give even normal cars like 120-150mph.
@istvanlorinczi2817 Жыл бұрын
@@jaidenjerome2936 there isn't a single track with a straight long enough to actually stretch out to those high speeds. Let's take the Nurnburgring, because that's the track every "car guy" jizzes their pants over. The back straight is really long, yet nobody tests their top speeds there, because it isn't long enough. On regular days, you have traffic, and on restricted track days, you still have event traffic, doing a top speed run can easily turn into an accident killing multiple people. Same thing applies even more to highways, even the Autobahn in Germany, if you want to do a top speed run, your best chances are on low traffic days at low traffic hours, and even then someone could be negligent, cut infront of you are both of you are dead. The only real possibility is on a dry lake bed, where you don't have enough grip to keep the car straight. I highly recommend Jason Cammisa's video on the V12 Vantage, he took it out for a top speed test, and he wasn't comfortable pushing it near it's top speed, since the thing was spinning tires in 7th gear at 130mph There's a reason there's only a handful of people companies take on to even try top speed tests, a regular customer has no reason and skill to push a car to it's limit

This doesn't help with any corporation, car brand, or what not, as they have spent more money to learn more advanced tech, and all of that goes down the drain as emissions standards are getting even more stricter.
@Crosshair84 Жыл бұрын
It's arbitrary nonsense from bureaucrats who need to justify their budgets. Once we got to fuel injection and the 1990s, the problem of air pollution was, for practical purposes, solved. Bureaucracies do EVERYTHING they can to ensure a problem NEVER gets solved. In this case, they did it by tightening the "standards". No rhyme or reason, no real cost/benefit calculations done, they did it just because. Faking data outright if they have to, as with the DEF regulations. Meanwhile, the same people who support these rules whine and bitch about Americans all driving Pickups and SUVs. It's not that Americans have some inherent love affair with either, but because government regulations banned the cars they wanted to buy. Large cars and station wagons. Think of the large cars of the 1960s and early 70s, but modern. People want SPACE in their vehicles, but the fuel economy regulations banned those cars. So people moved to vans, pickups, and SUVs. Regulations meant to reduce fuel use actually INCREASED fuel use. Instead of a low riding land yacht that gets 30 mpg, people are driving an SUV that gets 20-25 MPG.

People need to give the Mclaren speedtail more slack. It may say 1035 hp on spec sheets, but once that little hybrid battery runs out of charge (which happens before the car reaches 400 km/h), the car is really just 730 hp-ish from its ICE. And even with only 730 hp, Mclaren has stated that the Speedtail can go faster than 403 km/h, it's just that it is rev limited to that speed. From 380 km/h to 400 km/h top speed with around 110 hp of increased power seems reasonable to me when comparing the Mclaren F1 to the speedtail. Remember, it takes exponentially more power to go faster, because air resistance is not linear.

Top AVERAGE speed is Eurocar meta in my country. Being able to drive near top speed 90% of time (220-260 km/h or more) is what is prefeable here.

for sure when you have the road for it and it is safeish and legal to do so it makes sense. but when the highest speed limit in USA is 130kph (80mph) its a little less useful to be able to go 150. I'd rather not go to jail for criminal speeding.

The tire rating system is holding top speed liabilities back. (Y) says the tire can can do something better than 186 mph. It doesn't say how much. So if your customer doesn't keep his tire pressure and condition on point, but you sold him a car that can only go 189 mph, that's a good thing since tire companies didn't want to say how far beyond 186 anyway.

well here in germany top speed is still a big factor for buyers and for flexing on a meet because you dont want to be the sports car that has to let pass a diesel vw golf on the autobahn at 155mph. so many car guys actaully try to buy cars which go at least 200mph, so some golf kiddo doesnt make you look like an idiot since driving 200mph on the autobahn and still be a hinderance to other people is still a thing here

@KRAMITDFROG Жыл бұрын
The 155-mph limiter is due to a gentlemen's agreement between German manufacturers to which Porsche did not agree. It was not a tire thing because they had it when V-rated tires were the top spec and they are good for 149 mph.
@joshbacon8241 Жыл бұрын
I heard the reason for this 155mph gentleman’s agreement was to prevent the German government either imposing speed limits on the Autobahn or passing a law where all cars sold there have to be limited to a certain top speed - similar to what they have in Japan where every car sold in the Japanese domestic market has to be limited by law to 180 km/h (112 mph).
@KRAMITDFROG Жыл бұрын
@@joshbacon8241 I have heard different explanations including yours. I agree that it was likely a concession to avoid imposition of speed limits, whether due to safety or pollution. That said, it doesn't stop cars from other countries or Porsches from doing it, so I really cannot buy in 100% either. In the end, it probably allows them to cut corners that they otherwise wouldn't have if speed were unlimited. Maybe that's why Porsche didn't play ball as they didn't want to cut corners. And, if not cutting corners, why cut performance? (This last part is me pulling things out of my a$$ to try to make some sense of it. 🥴)

I’m at a point where I no longer care about a “performance” cars performance. Most importantly, they aren’t race cars, they’re road cars. 99% of them will either be driven in traffic or kept in a garage and driven twice a month before being sold after 6 months or a year for the next car.

I'll be honest, I feel like something has changed with newer cars. Heres an example: The fastest C5 corvette was modified to have 900hp, but it has a top speed of 227 mph. While an s550 mustang on KZbin has over 1,000 hp but it has the same factory top speed Here is another example: The McLaren F1 has 627 hp and a top speed of 240 While there is a 1,500 hp huracan with the a top speed of 202 mph I feel cars from 2014 have changed and become worse for modifying. Yes some newer cars can make hp more easily, but they still have the same top speed from the factory. So in other words, something has changed with car engine's since 2014

ive noticed that whilst cars are having stronger and stronger engines, like most models of modern impals (up until they cut their production) were coming with better and better engines, including the SS having a 300+hp, quieter engine, theyre also getting heavier and having more restrictions on things like the emissions and stuff. im alright with speed no longer being a big thing anymore, but it kinda sucks putting these super nice, big engines in these commute cars and then limiting them to such a degree that theyre not even worth investing into. been a thing since the 80s - see the ETA. high displacement, decent compression engine with a sub 6k redline and godawful compatibility. its for sure nice having better fuel efficiency for sure, what with gas prices but it feels like the modern car market is stagnating, theres nothing really fun worth investing in now, better to just get an older vehicle and put your time and money into that older vehicle to get something thats a pleasure to drive, fun to hoon in when you feel it, but also not a mess of restrictions, electrical components and overly expensive parts that last maybe a half of their 20yr prior stated lifetime. its sad, but the love im seeing as of recent for older vehicles excite me. ive been seeing the fiero, and the starion gain traction in the modern world for the first time since they were produced back in the 80s, and its great, but for nice, comfy little grocery getters like the malibu or the civic si or the silly Kia rio, theres no love because theres no point TO love. its both nice and endearing, but also sad to see.

I hate how the government sticks their nose into the automotive industry,I wish they would just leave it alone. I'm a car enthusiast,and the fact they are pushing electric vehicles are extremely annoying. It's also hard to find shops/qualified mechanics to do the things you desire on different types of vehicles. It's a shame that administrations like the Biden, and Obama administration have restricted the automotive industry so much,I wish that all automotive manufacturers could make one vehicle in each different class without restrictions. I wish that the public could control things like that,but the government puts a stop to that🤬.

Little-known fact about the Concorde, not only was it not the only SST, but it wasn't even the first to fly. The soviet Tupolev TU-144 "Concordski" actually flew before the Concorde, it had a higher top speed, carried more passengers, and could land on shorter, worse prepared runways. However, the Concorde could supercruise, meaning that while it did need to use fuel-hungry afterburners to reach supersonic speeds, once it got supersonic, the afterburners could be switched off, reducing noise and fuel consumption. This cannot be said for the TU-144, which needed continuous afterburning to maintain supersonic, which, when coupled with the engines being located much closer to the fuselage, meant that it was so loud in the cabin that you couldn't hear each other even if you were shouting, you literally had to pass around notes. It probably didn't help that one of them broke apart and crashed in front of thousands of spectators during the 1973 Paris Air Show.
