Why Are Car Top Speeds Getting Slower?

Obviously Hypercars like Bugatti Chiron's and Koenigsegg Jesko's are getting faster. However, your average everyday car or even sports cars, seem to have regressed or stagnated in top speed progression. Even Supercars like Lamborghini's are stagnating in Top Speed. What gives? I'll tell you what gives. Top Speed is overrated and just isn't as important as video games have marketed you to think they are. In reality, literally anything other than Top Speed, is more important to driving fast on road or even on track. Top Speed has diminishing returns after a certain point and has become a gimmick in the modern world of automotive culture. Notice how the fastest lap times on the Nurburgring isn't held by Bugatti's or Koenigsegg's, in fact, neither are seen in the Top 5 or even Top 10. Downforce, Handling, Acceleration, Weight Distribution, Tire Grip, Efficiency, and Reliability are what Consumers value more and even what race cars value more. Winning an Endurance Race is now seen as a far more valuable flex than going fast for a few seconds.

A lot of supercar manufacturers don't even bother to test their vehicles top speed so they just slap a 217mph figure on the spec sheet, a guy drove a LaFerrari at over 230mph on the Autobahn, quite a bit faster than it's stated top speed.

Yeah, everybody knows that the Aventador and it's variants can go faster than 217 mph. Or as you said, Ferrari, they pretty much have 3 top speeds they'll always give, 217 mph for the flagship like the LaFerrari, which may have been true back with the Enzo that has a top speed of 217 mph; 211 mph for their front engined V12's like the 812 and 205 for the mid engine cars like the F8 or 296. And it makes more sense in Km/h, because those speeds translate to 350 Km/h, 340 Km/h and 330 Km/h. It's just neat to order them in that way even when pretty much every car in their line up can go faster than their stated top speeds, because there is no way an F8 Tributo is just 3 mph faster than a 458 Italia.

I'd say it's less that it's "easy to grasp" and more that it's actually a useful metric. Anyone merging onto a highway can test out their 0-60 time and make actual good use of quick cars. In normal day-to-day driving I've never needed to go more than 160 km/h, and that's only on a very risky multiple car passing run. Do I care what my car's top speed is? No, not at all. It's tire limited anyway. But, being able to get up to highway speed in under 5 seconds is something I find actually useful and fun.

it was more involved than that from what I've heard flying at supersonic speeds requires really powerful engines so the fuel cost was insane, literally exponentially more than that of a regular jet such that the cost/distance was more than that of a normal passenger jet. add on top of that the high maintainence costs and then the bad press from mechanical failures and wrecks leading to decreased demand and increased ticket prices and it quickly becomes completely cost ineffective to run it

To Some extent yes because it can't be _too low_ otherwise gearing will become totally effed up and the car would actually become too unreliable and stressed at high RPMs all the time. So you have to still give even normal cars like 120-150mph.
@istvanlorinczi2817
@istvanlorinczi2817 Жыл бұрын
@@jaidenjerome2936 there isn't a single track with a straight long enough to actually stretch out to those high speeds. Let's take the Nurnburgring, because that's the track every "car guy" jizzes their pants over. The back straight is really long, yet nobody tests their top speeds there, because it isn't long enough. On regular days, you have traffic, and on restricted track days, you still have event traffic, doing a top speed run can easily turn into an accident killing multiple people. Same thing applies even more to highways, even the Autobahn in Germany, if you want to do a top speed run, your best chances are on low traffic days at low traffic hours, and even then someone could be negligent, cut infront of you are both of you are dead. The only real possibility is on a dry lake bed, where you don't have enough grip to keep the car straight. I highly recommend Jason Cammisa's video on the V12 Vantage, he took it out for a top speed test, and he wasn't comfortable pushing it near it's top speed, since the thing was spinning tires in 7th gear at 130mph There's a reason there's only a handful of people companies take on to even try top speed tests, a regular customer has no reason and skill to push a car to it's limit

Basically, before today, I'd had exactly 1 lesson on how to drive a manual car, and that was just doing 20-30 m.p.h. around an empty parking lot. Today I had to take a manual Nissan Sentra to the DMV to get inspected, and then take it to a nearby ford dealership to pick up some car parts for the auto shop I work at. Both of these trips involved doing 55 m.p.h. on the highway, which is quite the leap. And yes, there were more than a few short burnouts, and even more stalls.

I have to point out how much tire technology has carried the improvements we have seen in lap times. For example if you mod an old Ferarri F2004 with modern F1 tires, it can go similar lap times if not faster. The increase in weight and size of modern cars makes sports cars significantly slower unless you put crazy tires and aero on it which the later drastically lowers top speeds.

Speaking of weight, modern high end muscle cars have gotten really heavy. All weighing more than 4k lbs. Hellcat? 4,400-4,600 challenger & charger respectively. Shelby GT500 is about 4,100lbs, The Camaro ZL1 is actually the lightest out of all of them at around 3,800lbs. But even still, that’s kinda heavy. For comparisons sake, a base model Mustang weighs around 3,500lbs. @@NeedForSpeed.2004 Those muscle cars are really hampered by the fact they technically have a second row of seats as well. it's so funny to me that you've made a a 2 door and 4 door comparison like a Mustang for example isn't only 2 inches shorter length, a couple inches shorter height, and 3 inches WIDER. it's the same footprint as a sedan, that's partially the point of the "pony car" styling. But you've also got to consider higher performance engines need that space and are heavier. For as much as Dodges get called heavy boats have you seen how cramped a Hellcat's engine is even under that massive hood? Not to mention cars in general have just been getting heavier, mostly thanks to increased safety regulations. Sturdier chassis, increased crumple zones, more airbags. Even things like more electronics add up.

I think the main thing stopping tires from the insane top speeds that numbernerds want is not anything to do with grip, it's the actual structural integrity of the tire. An average diameter tire on a car going 250mph is, no exaggeration, experiencing THOUSANDS of Gs in the centrifugal direction. Tires, or anything really, spinning that fast, has to be extremely strong to not just be ripped apart.

People need to give the Mclaren speedtail more slack. It may say 1035 hp on spec sheets, but once that little hybrid battery runs out of charge (which happens before the car reaches 400 km/h), the car is really just 730 hp-ish from its ICE. And even with only 730 hp, Mclaren has stated that the Speedtail can go faster than 403 km/h, it's just that it is rev limited to that speed. From 380 km/h to 400 km/h top speed with around 110 hp of increased power seems reasonable to me when comparing the Mclaren F1 to the speedtail. Remember, it takes exponentially more power to go faster, because air resistance is not linear.

In the end, it probably allows them to cut corners that they otherwise wouldn't have if speed were unlimited. Maybe that's why Porsche didn't play ball as they didn't want to cut corners. Little-known fact about the Concorde, not only was it not the only SST, but it wasn't even the first to fly. The soviet Tupolev TU-144 "Concordski" actually flew before the Concorde, it had a higher top speed, carried more passengers, and could land on shorter, worse prepared runways. However, the Concorde could supercruise, meaning that while it did need to use fuel-hungry afterburners to reach supersonic speeds, once it got supersonic, the afterburners could be switched off, reducing noise and fuel consumption. This cannot be said for the TU-144, which needed continuous afterburning to maintain supersonic, which, when coupled with the engines being located much closer to the fuselage, meant that it was so loud in the cabin that you couldn't hear each other even if you were shouting, you literally had to pass around notes. It probably didn't help that one of them broke apart and crashed in front of thousands of spectators during the 1973 Paris Air Show.

My dad rode the Concorde. He said it was the most uncomfortable flight he had ever taken. The engines were loud, the seats were small, and it was expensive AF compared to a normal plane. Overall not worth the 2 hour time saving, he'd much rather go on a 747, be comfortable and pay less. Military jets also got slower because the USAF analized combat in the Vietnam war, and found out that fighter jets never went past Mach 1.3 because it would severley limiti manouverability and range, so newer jets were made to be slower.

the amount of space needed to reach 200mph is very rare. So much so that there is an exclusive club for reaching those speeds. To push past this R&D can increase by 20% for a speed that no one might even bother trying to achieve.

the BRM type 15 could get wheel spin at 140mph and the 1.5 litre v16 was estimated to be capable of about 780bhp. Concorde was very impressive, the TU 144 was apparently marginally faster than the concorde but harder to handle.

its because of brand reputation, before, brands did the best to get crazy reputation of those top speed. Now that demand is higher, CEOs getting paid more, brands save money and the cars get less, what you are comparing are stock, if you put even 100k , now theres gonna be a diference, depending how much money you. when you paid for a bugatti 3.6M USD$ you're waiting some beast. but when you buy a corvette, youre paying money an get something worth it. its just how you see it. -safety measures also matter. (and 70k for a V8 6.6l is worth it)

Not to be that nerd but as a part of gen z I felt called out, that hovercraft isn’t actually hovering. It’s more like a boat sitting on a big air bag or ballon. This produces a very buoyant force while having less friction with the water hence why we called it a hovercraft but it really isn’t.

ive noticed that whilst cars are having stronger and stronger engines, like most models of modern impals (up until they cut their production) were coming with better and better engines, including the SS having a 300+hp, quieter engine, theyre also getting heavier and having more restrictions on things like the emissions and stuff. im alright with speed no longer being a big thing anymore, but it kinda sucks putting these super nice, big engines in these commute cars and then limiting them to such a degree that theyre not even worth investing into. been a thing since the 80s - see the ETA. high displacement, decent compression engine with a sub 6k redline and godawful compatibility. its for sure nice having better fuel efficiency for sure, what with gas prices but it feels like the modern car market is stagnating, theres nothing really fun worth investing in now, better to just get an older vehicle and put your time and money into that older vehicle to get something thats a pleasure to drive, fun to hoon in when you feel it, but also not a mess of restrictions, electrical components and overly expensive parts that last maybe a half of their 20yr prior stated lifetime. its sad, but the love im seeing as of recent for older vehicles excite me. ive been seeing the fiero, and the starion gain traction in the modern world for the first time since they were produced back in the 80s, and its great, but for nice, comfy little grocery getters like the malibu or the civic si or the silly Kia rio, theres no love because theres no point TO love. its both nice and endearing, but also sad to see.

TBH, top speed has to do with aerodinamics and top end power and gearing. Also, the C8 is around there with the C7. The problem comes from the priorities, as the viper ACR has got a lot of drag at high speed because aero.

0-60 really doesn’t matter, it’s weight that matters the most. Having a car with lighter weight will give an overall improvement to everything except acceleration (the harder your tires push the ground the more grip you have). Dodge vipers have had a 0-60 equal to scat packs and have less power but also have less weight, the car overall handles better and probably gets better fuel economy if you drive it right.

Almost all engineers I’ve talked to either are neutral towards government regulations or prefer them, I don’t know exactly why, but I have 2 assumptions 1. They prefer making efficient vehicles as they like efficiency more 2. It gives them a solid ruleset to build within rather than just having to do better then the competition

There's also the matter of actual infrastructure where attaining a vehicle's top speed would be possible. If people think going 180 is slow, they can try doing it on a pot-hole ridden road with concrete patches and tar-snakes every other 600 yards and see how it works out. Even for the mythical Autobahn, for Germany to maintain it at a level where such speeds can be reached requires that only portions of it are rated for no speed limit enforcement, while the rest is undergoing some kind of maintenance. And this is without taking into account the driver education required to make this possible. You're not gonna be doing 180 on the I-95 out of Philly even with the best pavement because some Altima's going to give 0 fucks and pull out in front of you regardless and delete both itself and you from existence.
