Everyone seems to forget butters isn't so innocent. Yes, he is nieve, but no, he's not weak. In fact, he seems to hate Kyle just like Cartman. Or at least, he takes any opportunity he can to make Kyle feel down. Not to mention the fact he scared his grandma by talking to her about death and how she will die alone..Good on him, I cheered I'll admit, but that is still very dark.

I feel like, Butters is definitely innocent, but not in the way that he doesn't know mature concepts like death and sexuality. He's just innocent in the way that he's not actively malicious and usually is just engaging in harmless childhood meanness. Oh goodness yes, Butters fighting back against his grandma with kindness. Heck, I remember him shaking Stan out of his goth phase. It was striking to see him be happy for his own sadness, and then at the end have him say he'd, and I paraphrase, "rather be a wimp for being soft and naive than a bigger one by being edgy and cynical". Also, every time Butters swears is great. Somehow it always felt like it came out of left field.

The particular way it is written, that Cartman is still considered friends not just with Butters, but also many of the other kids, has to be one of the most amusingly believable, and maybe even relatable things about this show. Simply put, it’s because they’re kids in a small town, and many of them live within walking distance of each other. Surely, many of these kids will stop being “friends” with Cartman once they’re all older, but Cartman is simply another one of the neighborhood kids. He’s a disturbed little monster who they all know has done a long list of unforgivable things, but they also enjoy playing with him after school. I remember kids like Cartman, or at least kids who many people had a number of reasons not to like personally, but who were… well, around. You still played make believe and such with these kids just the same, because they were there.

Perhaps the purest character in South Park, paired with the most evil. Opposite attract, or something. And foils are always fun in stories, playing off of each other, and elevating each's personalities and actions by proxy. Some of most euphoric moments in the show involves Cartman getting his, and Butters' victories are a big part of them. I still come back to the conclusion of AWESOM-O time and again, and it's honestly one of my favorite episodes in general! Also. Oh my goodness. I forgot how Liane "paid" the plumber and how Cartman thought she was sobbing over him. I nearly died laughing. XD

I think Butters is an easy target for Cartman because Stan and Kyle are wise to Eric's bullshit and Butters (supposedly) being so trustworthy and nieve (despite him losing those traits after his Canadian girlfriend breaks up with him over Skype/Zoom) is the reason why Cartman always ropes Butters into Eric's sceames. But I always felt like the world (or Matt and Trey) let Eric off scott free while Butters would always be "grounded" because of misunderstanding or Stephen and Linda's relishing of punishing their son or no godly reason. I don't know if I would count the Paramount+ movies because I don't have an account and they haven't been shown on Comedy Central.

Butters absolutely has a lot of repressed rage. I remember the Hawaii scene where Butters was asked to hit a golf ball by using his rage, and it manages to sink an entire cruise ship Titanic-style. It makes sense. Out of all the characters in South Park, the number of times he's been wronged vs the number of times he's gotten angry is extreme. We really only see him "release" it as Professor Chaos and embrace it as Victor Chaos. He's also pretty ignorant and prejudiced, but I feel that it's written more that it's how is strict parents raised him. There are a ton of scenes where Butters just doesn't understand common words and concepts. I remember when his dad tried to explain boners, he avoided talking about it, only to punish him later not knowing. It's a miracle we even got current Butters when his main authority figures are his abusive parents and (to an extent) Eric.

The main reason I believe Butters stays friends with Cartman and lets him do so many awful things to him is this: Cartman is manipulative. No, Butters isn't innocent, but if anyone can get Butters to do his dirty work, it's Cartman. Bullies thrive on manipulation and Cartman is a master manipulator. Yes, there are kids and adults who see through Cartman's schemes (Kyle and Stan for instance). However, Cartman still manages to sway people over to his side and when he doesn't, he finds out what their weaknesses are so he can BREAK them (all the nannies he scared off). Ouff. That Pandemic special episode. It's crazy how the show made me feel genuinely bad for Cartman. Granted he is also my favourite character so I'm biased on that front. Honestly the special was so good it felt like a spiritual ending to the entire show for me. It's why I thought it was kind of poetic how Cartman sacrificed his better future and ended up being a sort of hero that nobody will ever acknowledge. Though I saw this fan art once where the ending was changed somewhat where after they close the curtains on the diner Cartman smiles and starts walking away with his shopping cart with his wife and kids hiding inside and they talk as Cartman and his family in secret leave South Park for good. Broke my heart man. I wish that was canon.
