Why Are Myanmar Refugees In Malaysia Being Deported, Even At The Risk Of Death? | Insight

It has been two years since the coup in Myanmar returned the military junta to power. Persecution of dissidents and minorities continues in the reclusive country.
There have been reports of deadly force used to supress civilian protests, and the use of explosives and air raids against armed resistance. Over a million people are estimated to have been displaced by the violence.
But those who have fled Myanmar have not been welcomed by its ASEAN neighbours. Why has Malaysia deported thousands of refugees, even as they face persecution by the military junta?

Well, I look at it two ways. Singapore is as small as the UAE and the Gulf states, and, therefore, can't take a proactive stance to welcome millions of refugees. However, it can appeal to the goodness of its bigger neighbors, particularly Malaysia. After all, millions of Muslims are being accepted as refugees in the Christian West. I am sure Muslim Malaysia can reciprocate in kind when a few Christians in the neighborhood seek asylum there.

@@satyannair4837 Malaysia had always been welcoming to refugees. That is why there is a pull factor and it ends up hosting the largest refugee population in ASEAN (despite its size compared to Indonesia and Thailand). That is why it is facing this issue with refugees now. Malaysia is definitely heading towards saturation (if it has not already), and simply do not have the resources nor capability to host these refugees anymore.

@@louistheroux530 Malaysia's population density is far less compared to Indonesia and Thailand. For instance, Indonesia is six times bigger than Malaysia, but its population is nine times greater. In fact, as Muslim societies implode worldwide, the onus lies on countries like Turkey, Indonesia and Malaysia to step up on welcoming refugees. One can't expect small nations in Scandinavia to do their bit, when Muslim nations themselves play the I-don't-have-space card.

One can't expect small nations in Scandinavia to do their bit, when Muslim nations themselves play the I-don't-have-space card." Nope. The issue is not the religion of the host or the refugee. Only states which had signed the 1951 Convention should be expected to host refugees. There should not be any expectation for countries which had not signed the 1951 Convention to host refugees, because they have no legal obligation to do so. If they do host, it's a form of charity. But if they change their policy and decide to be like Singapore, they are well within their legal rights to do so.

@@louistheroux530 Aren't you contradicting yourself, when you claimed earlier that Malaysia has been welcoming a lot of refugees, and it is "saturated" now? And religion is an important card for Malaysia at the least. As Islam takes centerstage and becomes increasingly aggressive in the country, there is an inherent desire building up amongst Malays to make Malaysia a full-blown Muslim nation. Islam has been steadily climbing, and has crossed 60% today. To that effect, it has been encouraging more foreign Muslims to settle in Malaysia, even as the Chinese feel increasingly threatened and are leaving in droves. This is actually good, because it means more Muslim refugees can find a home in Malaysia, if they are willing to open the borders. As for the West signing a pact to take in refugees, did they expect a 2-million-strong Muslim caravan forcing itself into Germany, France, the UK and Scandinavia? The pact involved a formal invitation to refugees, not millions storming into their borders. And since Muslim refugees don't have a good record of mixing with the mainstream, it is causing massive problems for the West, particularly the smaller ones. It's time for the world to identify more Muslim nations for placing Muslim refugees, and, in that regard, Malaysia should be in the Top-3, in my view.

Msia and Msians are known for their charitable nature. They are receptive whether you are Rohingyas, Chins, Karen’s, Bataks, Champas, Chinese or Indians. In my village there are Vietnamese who overstay, Rohingyas with UNHCR cards, Madurese etc but the villagers don’t report them to authorities as they don’t cause trouble. If they try to do that in Singapore I have no doubt that they would be driven off the country’s shores even before they could even draw their combs to comb their hair. To be fair CNA should explore why Singapore is so heartless.

Burma/Myanmar is an absolutely beautiful nation and the people are honest, friendly and helpful. In my humble opinion, Burma would have been much better off without Anglo British Colonialism. For instance, there's hardly any Muslim, Hindu or Christian there up until Colonialism. I supposed it's fair to say that many of these tragedies that nation facing today, such as racial, ethnic and religious conflicts, started with Colonialism. 😔 Speaking of ethnic and religious tragedies Burma facing today, the fact that the world's longest Civil War which is in Myanmar, mainly between Buddhist Burmese and Christian Karen (while Buddhist Karen are largely at peace) was made it possible, prolonged and supported by Anglo Clans of USA, UK & Australia, etc while they are using next-door neighbor Thailand (which has a defense treaty with them) as a base camp since in the 1950. In my humble opinion, ethnic Karen refugees fleeing the conflict/war in Myanmar are entitled to cross over to Thailand to stay, as well as eligibility to relocate to new places such as USA, Australia. - The fact that the world's longest Civil War which is in Myanmar, mainly between Buddhist Burmese and Christian Karen (while Buddhist Karen are largely at peace) was made it possible, prolonged and supported by Anglo Clans of USA, UK & Australia, etc while they are using next-door neighbor Thailand (which has a defense treaty with them) as a base camp since in the 1950. True, ethnic Karen refugees fleeing the conflict/war in Myanmar are entitled to cross over to Thailand to stay, as well as eligibility to relocate to new places such as USA, Australia. - Anglo Clans of USA, UK & Australia, etc are using next-door neighbor Thailand, which has a defense treaty with them, as a base camp since in the 1950s; from which attack against China/PRC was launched by sending Chinese Nationalist (Taiwanese Kuomintang) forces into nearby Burma's eastern border closed to China in the '50s and '60s. In the '60s and '70s, using Thailand as a base camp, attack against nearby Laos & Cambodia were launched during Indochina war where several millions innocent civilians were killed. - Colonialism & Colonization are evil things done and benefited by evildoers.. Here in Singapore, a tiny island with 6 million souls lives like sardines in a can, where else in nearby vast bountiful Australia which is ten thousand times 10,000 bigger with a mere 27 million inhabitants. Similar situation in tiny and packed Japan, which is running out of space and land. Do you know that their living room and bedroom are the same place, and that most Japanese people sleep in their living room. 😔 - Here's the one solution. Why don't Burma's Muslim, Hindu & Christian population, if they wish, move to place like Anglo Colonized vast bountiful Australia/New Zealand in Asia-Pacific region? After all, these are Asia-Pacific lands looted from Native Asians-Pacific people." 😔 [For the hidden root cause of the Myanmar situation, May I suggest you read the informative multi-pages comments by 'Ms. Gregoria' at, kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWG9n4SQeqeJq7c ., that I learnt so much more truths about Myanmar than I've ever known] ... That reminds me of the sexual assaults that occurred during the 2015-2016 New Year's Eve in multiple cities across Germany and suspects were largely reported to be migrants and refugees. I do not understand how people who make the journey to a safer land would then commit heinous crimes. People who are removed from such environments are very empathetic until they deal with it themselves. Just look at the U.S. and the immigration crisis right now. States who weren't dealing with it before used to be very critical of southern states with how they dealt with illegal migrants until the southern states started bussing them to the other states and now they're screaming for help.

I would consider the refugees CNA interviewed are the more lucky ones. They have jobs and fairly more comfortable home compared to other refugees. And why charge money for refugees to get a card? They are refugees. It doesn't make sense, the card is granting them to work meaning they shouldn't work before getting the card. If they shouldn't work where the hell would they get the money? It can be a reason to why so many result to work not according to the rule of law or begging in the streets or even become crooks. RM500 is a lot even for Malaysians. I think we didn't hate them at first. We welcomed them. But it all changed when so many Ronghiyas caused problems here. I had 2 encounters. One was when they begged at a sidewalk. They forced me to give some money and keep holding me until I gave them some money. I naturally was pissed, I raised my voice to spook him. I originally wanted to give him RM5 but when he acted like that I got pissed. Second time was at a parking lot. We call them 'Ulat parking'. They forced people parking their cars to pay them. So called, "parking fees", when the parking lots belonged to the city council. It's like there are becoming gangsters. There are so many things that happened and these few bad seeds are painting bad images on Rohingyas as a whole. I think Rohingyas in Malaysia should also condemm these few fellow Rohingyas. If they want peace then live peacefully according to the rule of law. I don't mind they are here. But it needs to be at a controlled amount that Malaysia & UNCHR can afford to pay for their welfare. Provide sufficient education & wellfare so they can assimilate better & don't become a burden that many have became.

Malaysia is not a State party to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol. It does not have a legal or administrative framework for managing refugees and has not set up mechanisms to process asylum seekers and refugees when they arrive in the territory. Singapore is the best country in SEA. Should be able to take a good care of them.

US and its allies are very much involved in the . Myanmar's crisis. But few talk of them want to offer the refugees asylum unlike the Ukrainian refugees. When they sanction Myanmar, aren't they creating more misery and forcing more Myanmar people to flee? Destabilizing Myanmar is really to create a flow of refugees. What's the logic? Is it according to UN laws to impose sanction on Myanmar?
@satyannair4837

You're right. Sanctions have done more harm than good. However, the one thing you do realise about sanctions is that it ends up uniting the country against the 'evil' West, so to speak. The refugees in Myanmar are not a product of Western sanctions, but rather a result of Buddhist militancy, through the monks and the Army. Few have spoken against the repression of Buddhist establishments, including Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Thailand, among others.

I agree with someone saying that Colonialism/Colonization are evil things done and benefited by evildoers.. Gregoria' at, kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWG9n4SQeqeJq7c ]

@@hellyeah7403 What are you talking about? Colonialism was the best thing that happened to India, Africa, and the rest of the world, although people would rather kill themselves than admit it. The Chinese, for instance, has a far more violent and repressive history in driving its own people out of the country. Moreover, its history with the rest of the Mongoloid race (Japanese, Koreans) has been excruciating!!! The same applies to the Africans and others, but it is convenient today to blame the white man for everything. And Japan has no space? What? You must be referring to Tokyo, which is tantamount to saying China is crowded, if Hong Kong is a point of reference. And what do you mean people should inhabit "stolen" lands? These are white societies. People are migrating to these countries, not because of the aboriginal people or the Maoris, but because of the white man. And if the white man decides he doesn't want you, then so be it. Did you even bother to ask what the white man feels when people force themselves into these societies? Given Xi's screwups, we can expect a massive exodus of Chinese to these lands soon.

@@hellyeah7403 Burma would have been much better off without Anglo British Colonialism. Unfortunately for Myanmar, they could end up just another one of those countries that just has constant war. For a Buddhist predominant country, that’s very very unfortunate. But I’m sure Laos and Cambodia would be the same if the people stood up against their horribly corrupt basically dictatorship governments. There’s a reason Thailand can prosper while their neighbors sink. Thailand doesn’t have much more resources or land, they just came up with better strategy for their country and people.

Thailand, Laos and Cambodia are largely homogenous countries. Their conflicts are minimal. However due to British colonialism, Myanmar social fabric had been fractured permanently. Anglo colonisers imported ten of thousands Labourers from Bengal during colonial time. Rakhine population had been outnumbered by Bengali population. In 1970s, due to West and East Pakistan(now Bangladesh) civil war, another wave of Bengali refugees arrived Burma. 🇲🇲 Government announced State emergency because they couldn't cope with sheer number of refugees. The world turned the blind eye on 🇲🇲. In 1947 to 61, there were mujahideen movements in Rakhine State where Islamists killed thousands of Rakhine locals. Mujahideens tried to annex part of Rakhine (Mayu peninsula in North Rakhine) to join Bangladesh. In colonial time, every year over a million people immigrated into Burma from India. Because Anglo government made Burma a province of India. In north east and south east of Burma, Anglo-American missionaries carried out cultural invasion of a Buddhist country to continue imperialists' ruling. Those who converted to Christianity fought its own people for their colonial masters. These converted people and Indian and Muslim immigrants became part of ruling class. They discriminated Buddhist population in their own home by setting damaging and ruthless business practices. Burmese people lost their lands, house, business and even their daughters to foreigners. Indians and Muslims capitalists loaned local burmese with unfairly high interest rates. When the farmers couldn't pay back the loan they took the daughters. Buddhists are too soft, they needs to grow backbones if they want their civilisation survive.

@@BM-zd3vs You say the Buddhists needs to grow backbones for their civilization in Burma to survive, yet the ruling military regime oppresses their own people while instigating themselves as rulers in a closed market crony monopoly. The notion of "trying to preserve Buddhist culture" as an excuse to take control of power while doing very little for economic development for the general population is outrageous. You mentioned the Indians and Muslims taking Burmese daughters if they couldn't pay back then, now you see widespread poverty from military mismanagement and Burmese workers abroad doing low wage jobs that's not necessarily preserving Burmese self-respect? The Burmese military is in a position to bring wealth and prosperity to its civilization but instead has impoverished it being no different from the British colonizers. For an supposedly "Ultra Nationalist" force they sure oppress and impoverish their own nationals alot.

I am sure Muslim Malaysia can reciprocate in kind when a few Christians in the neighborhood seek asylum there.

Then why make the longer and perilous journey to Acheh and Malaysia? The NGOs and the UN according aid in this camp is silent on this option. In the meantime, the Govts of Indonesia and Malaysia have to bear the brunt of the social ills caused by them. The primary reason why they were allowed in the first place is because they were Muslim brethren more than for humane reasons. So, reap what you have sowed.
