@@darkzerk7 It's not just that. I hire in my company. Many of the younger people are devoid of life when they come to interview, or during their daily job, if they even make it that far. They are drones who have been brainwashed by a shitty education system into being stupid and following orders like a robot. And I don't mean "unintelligent", I mean "stupid". They know about their job, but seem to have no smarts or critical thinking. Any question or challenge that is slightly off the "main course" completely sends them spinning into orbit. Not knowing how to do something doesn't mean "look for books", "check the Internet" or "ask a senior". It means staring at the screen for 3 hours, then getting frustrated, saying "I'm no good, I suck, how come I don't know this?" and have zero productivity until a senior happens to check on them to bail them out.

I went to a wilderness camp in Utah because I wanted to do something different and out there one summer. Kinda sucked at first, but when I left, I looked out over the Lasalles and it was so beautiful that I cried because I was leaving. With no phone or any electronics, a rather limited diet, a foam mat to sleep on, and my only dwelling a tent made of a tarp, I was happy there somehow. Really redefined my ideas about what brings one happiness.

I know one thing that makes me really unhappy as a 17 year old. It's the inability to have a hobby. once you start a hobby like sculpting or playing an instrument, you show ur work to others in hopes to find value in your work. But instead of apparition you're met with mockery, for your not as good as the people on social media. Now maybe this is just my personal experience, or I truly am just horrible at what I do. But what I noticed is my aunts uncles and father are more willing to pick up new hobbies, then most people my age. And I think that has a lot to do with the fear of judgment or discouragement from the artist on social media. Either way it causes a lack of purpose to young people, for now we are too scared to even look for interests.

Find something you like so much that you'll do it even if you suck at it. And realize that if you keep doing it, you will constantly get better at it. Keep working at it. Don't show it to other people too much at first. Take criticism as an opportunity to get better or as a challenge. If people mock you, prove them wrong. The good news is, the older you get, the less you care about what other people think. I'm at the point now where I don't really care and I do what I want. But it took me a long time to get there. I hope you get there quicker. I don't think this is a generational thing, I think it's just age. When I was 17, I cared a lot more about what people thought and I avoided doing things I wasn't good at.

I took up growing weed as a hobby a few years ago... I put so much work and effort and time into it and it brought me so much happiness while doing it. But the most fulfilling part was when I gave a friend of mine (he used to grow weed on a large scale) some of the weed from my first grow and he gave me so much positive feedback and he really seemed to get why I enjoyed growing. It was a really good experience that I cherish. That as well as the time my uncle (who also grows weed) was staying at my moms place and I stopped by to pick up a parcel that had some grow lights in it as well as some nutrients. He asked what was in the parcels and I showed him and we ended up talking about growing weed for over 3 hours. It was really meaningful experience.

Thanks man. As a 16-year-old white guy with a poor but stable family, I find meaning and happiness by listening to older music, engaging in fiction stories, being with fun people, and enjoying nature and the world around me. I wish that more of my friends, some of whom have cut themselves and most of whom have at some point been depressed, could feel the same appreciation for life that I do. But then again I am a white guy so I know I’ve had it easier than most of them. Basically, instead of falling into this pit of self-pity and loneliness and sadness, I’m trying to get as much money and comfort as possible in the next decade by following what is essentially a life plan. After all, as a white guy living in America, this system was designed for me to succeed, so if I follow it I hope that I will eventually be happy, carefree, and financially free from worry and stress. Not necessarily rich, but rich enough to not worry about money. And unfortunately it feels like I’m living in basically the best case scenario, even though my only real life goals are to be richer than my parents, and be reasonably happy, and if one aspect of my plan fails, like I don’t get into the right college or get the right job, my whole life could be messed up. It’s seriously depressing if you think about it too much.

I think this video misses/slips by a pretty fundamental problem about why modern life causes loneliness: our way of life lacks tribes. You'll notice people are weirdly nostalgic about the military or high school despite the fact what happens there is objectively drudgery. We live in a world of instant gratification where nothing we do that makes us feel good lasts for more than a few seconds. We're constantly looking for dopamine and it's become normal to just lay down for hours and stay up late, always looking for more media to consume so that we constantly feel good for those few seconds before moving on. Nobody wants to take responsibility for themselves and forgoe instant happiness for later happiness. They'd rather stay up late to feel good for those few seconds than make sure they wake up well rested and feeling good so they can take on the rest of the day. People need to rely less on instant gratification and more on delayed gratification for their dopamine, such as through working out daily.

I remember watching the Lord of the Rings many years ago when in my 20s and Rivendell struck me as something so beautiful that I was pissed off to not see anyone over the years genuinely try and build a small town or city in that style of architecture. Off the top of my head, a few solutions and things you can do: -Spend time in nature -Work out and eat healthy -Don't work like a slave for a company that would replace you within an instant if you died -Reduce the time you spend on social media, or even cut it out altogether -Read quality books -Consume high quality content (art, music, films) -Meditate -If you're in school (which I assume many people here are) don't let a system that isn't designed for how a human's brain works affect your self worth. -If possible, try to work a job where you can set your own schedule -Did I mention spend time in nature? This is just a few things I thought of. I'd be interested to hear what you guys would add to this list.

America is not a perfect nation, obviously. the scars from her past still affects them even to this day, effects of slavery and wealth segregation still affects millions of americans. but again it's like there's a perfect nation on earth, in the end any nation are still run by faulty humans, they got driven by their own ambitions and ego, thus a perfect nation is impossible to be achieved. the difference with america is that, everyone is practically a fan of her. media all across the world, points their camera at every little thing that they do. both the good and the bad. it's possibly the most transparent nation on earth right now with just how much the media is locked on america. that's why many people espescially americans felt like all the bad of this world is in america. while in truth, it's not. as an indonesian that's fascinated by this country named America, and have intensely studied her history, policy, and even her faults, all i can say is that, america is by all accounts a great nation. it's not perfect, and there's a ton that can be improved, but america is not falling anytime soon. she's just having a bad day, a stressful day perhaps. her old rival went away, and a new guy appeared out of thin air is trying to hurt her, that's why she's a bit stunned. but if history says smething is that, america is a rebel nation, and she's not gonna fall without a fight. -love from Jakarta, Indonesia

I am still very worried about America's future for three reasons. 1. America is geographically, politically, and culturally predisposed towards disunity. It hasn't happened yet because until recently, most of America's population was centered around the Northeast of the country in states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York. The South and West of the country was very sparsely populated. However, with the industrial decline of these regions and the rise of air conditioning, we saw massive migrations to the Sun Belt starting around 1950. States like Texas, California, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida became the new economic and cultural juggernauts of the USA. This in turn put much of the country's population away from the central government, making it more out of touch with the population and breeding instability. If you look at a map of America, its geographic fault lines become very apparent. For example, the West Coast, being very geographically isolated from the rest of the country, should logically be independent. The effects of these geographic fault lines are limited now because the migration was so recent, but as time passes, the isolation will cause greater cultural differences between regions. 2. The central government is out of touch with the needs of the population. With all of these dividing factors that I mentioned, you would think that America would be run on a federation system that grants very much autonomy to the states, right? Wrong. Since the Roosevelt presidency, the government in Washington has tried to act less like a light-touch government in charge of a federation, and more like a strong, centralized European government. This has caused innumerable issues and reignited sectionalism. Every time one political party or the other seizes control in an election, it immediately tries to impose its ideology and policies on the whole country, including on the states that don't want it. As a result, a huge amount of resentment and anger has emerged between the Blue States (states dominated by the Democrats) and the Red States (states dominated by Republicans). These two groups of states are basically alliances between different states within the union, often acting on issues in unison with each other and intentionally going against what the other alliance of states does. 3. America is losing its identity. I think that the most accurate observation you made about America is that American identity is a declaration. This is very true. American identity centers around a vague American-ness, and a sense of commonality and patriotism. This is dying. Increasingly, we are seeing more and more people making the declaration of being anti-American. They decry America as the ultimate evil, a representation of colonialism, racism, sexism, and oppression at its peak. These people loathe the country, have no faith in its ability to do good, and often take more pride in their city or state than the country as a whole. This group is growing at an alarming rate. We saw it last summer with the country-wide riots, with burned American flags and anti-American slogans chanted ad nauseam. This mentality is everywhere. It's in our streets, our media, even in our own government. America isn't held together by one race, one tribe, or one culture. It is held together by the shared sense of pride and unity between the people of this country. If that dies, the glue holding America together is gone. By this definition, America is dying.

I personally think that this will actually benefits america in the long term, yes it will definitely bring conflicts and debates, but i do think in thelong term it will only basically empower the manifest destiny act. lastly the national identity, again i can't really say a lot since im not an american, but again despite americans i know are not extremely patriotic or something, they are in fact still loves their nation. other than that well as an outsider i can't really say much to it. well basically what i'm trying to say is this, it's really easy pointing the bad things, espescially at america since everything is really transparent believe it or not. but by doing so, it makes it hard to appreciate the good that's around you. at least until you lost it. but again, at least from what i study in history, a good nation always criticize themselves. yiu guys already know what your problems are, now just to fix it.

You must have had a nice childhood. Mine was horrible. I hated life and hated humans and if i had been strong and powerful as a kid i would have probably killed at least 100 people who were very hostile towards me. Most of all i hated the meaningless existence and the extreme lack of freedom and lack of challenges in life. I was so bored. I could hardly live with it. I only survived because I inherently believed it could eventually change and that I was smart enough to get through the psychological hell. I never thought the world was perfect. I was so distraught by the way things worked that I told my parents that i wish i could become a dictator and change things.

@@denisl2760 When I was a kid (born 1995) my parents did not have internet. until i was in my late teens, we only had two tv channels. No game consoles and no technology in general. Entertainment or information on the world was almost non existent. All the other kids had internet already when they were in grade school. my family was just an outlier. Unhappiness doesn't need to stem from the worlds problems. Most first world countries have plenty of local problems and plenty of ugliness and psychological terror to make you miserable to the core.

I currently teach Japanese adults, mostly businessmen, at an online English school, and it disgusts me how some of these people take pride in dedicating their entire lives to their jobs and not giving a shit about their family. They usually tell me that on the weekdays they would start work at 8 AM, end at 9 PM, and go home at around 11 when their wife and kids are already fast asleep. On the weekends, they either continue their work from home, play sports with their coworkers/bosses or study some skill their bosses demand them to learn (like accounting, English etc.) I often ask them whether they spend time with their families, and they say yes, but only one or two times a month when they take them on outings. And when I ask them if they ever get worried that they're not being for their kids, they just say no, they don't, because it's "just the wives' job" to do such things apparently. The fact they say that so nonchalantly, and even take pride in it, really hits home what Whatifalthist said about modern bourgeoise capitalism and postmodern thinkers, on how they see basic human needs like socializing, to be a "weakness" or even a second priority because of how it doesn't contribute to the industrialized economy. Sorry for coming off as rude, I don't mean to generalize the Japanese, it's just these few salarymen that think that taking care of children is a "wife's job" because they couldn't bother about their own offspring really hits me. It makes me thankful that my father, despite working late hours too in another country, still messages me sometimes if I'm okay.

You know the more that I watch this video the more I realize that the city that I live in, Cincinnati Ohio, follows a lot of the ideas that seem to point to happiness presented in this video. In Cincinnati we have deep rooted German immigrant heritage which is why we celebrate Oktoberfest every year and there are a lot of places in town that have German inspired architecture and little setup town squares that if you read deep into it you could see as an unhealthy gentrifying but in the places that they are there isn't any severe poverty or the like so I think that it's a good thing that there's at least some special architecture in the city that I live in. It goes to show that you don't have to build a gigantic cathedral to make the place that you live special it just kind of add something that presents your identity as it is.

Have you ever seen a clip of a talk by Slavoj Zizek where he describes why people in Yugoslavia were more happy under Communism than now? I thought it was quite interesting. He said that under Communism, whilst there were no problems with getting food, there were sometimes shortages of certain things like coffee. You could have coffee a few times a week, but there'd be some week where there was no coffee, and then you'd appreciate the days when you did have coffee more. Now, there's coffee everyday. Every city and town has a Starbucks or a Costa. Nobody with the money to buy it, goes without coffee, so they lose their appreciation.

@@darken2417 As a tech guy myself and someone who's owned a Rift S for a few years I'd for sure say it's a step up. I'm under the belief virtual friendships and interactions are completely meaningless for the most part and cannot be a substitute for actual human interaction but as someone who personally experienced stuff like VR chat it certainly seems to have a effect of tricking your mind into making conversations feel a bit more real. I personally never use VRChat myself and I'm still under the belief friendships made in such settings are still barely applicable to any real life relationship but it still seems to be an improvement over any other virtual setting so far. With VR still being out of the reach of most of the mainstream populace it will be interesting to see how it will affect society when a VR headset becomes as mainstream as the Iphone and a VR application similar to VRChat becomes as prominent as let's say facebook or instagram.

Looking at suicide rates and happiness index doesnt have to be direct correlation. Also, happiness is such a hard thing to determine. Do they mean right now happy, general content with life, happy as in just not feeling sad most of the day, optimistic about the future...

I agree about oversafetyism. In countries that require bicycle helmets studies have shown it makes people bicycle far less. Physical activity is essential to being happy, so the nanny states just hurting people in the name of their own good. Studies have also shown people take greater risks when they wear a helmet. The illusion of safety can make you less safe then having no safety

I think that what a lot of people are thinking today. We live in a time of great standard of living, but there is so many problems left to be solved. Immortality. Space travel. What beyond our universe? Or even beyond that? The game is not nearly won. But because of how easy life has become I think everyone thinks we have. And I think a lot of this has to do with our government policies today.

I think something you're missing here is the lack of a collective purpose for modern society. The happiest societies are the ones where there's a common purpose everyone is trying to achieve, even if achieving it costs resources and effort. For example frontier societies trying to settle new lands, or societies at war with something they perceive as evil. Think of the British in WW2, suffering loss of life and property for the war against the Germans. Or the Americans settling the west while suffering hardships. The common purpose provides happiness even when physical conditions are bad. Modern society has good physical conditions but no common purpose. Nothing we're all trying to achieve. The happiest people among us are probably people like entrepreneurs or start-up workers who are convinced their company or product will change the world. But for most people, no such sense of purpose exists.

You're correct. I have noticed quite the difference in contentment and happiness between me and others the moment I acquired a purpose. It's like finding a lamp that shines to the way forward while those without it stumble in darkness.
