Zero drop unfortunately kills my back and my plantar fascia 😢. I've found relief wearing high drop stability shoes (12 mm drop Brooks) but I see what you mean with "don't let the shoes do the work for you"

High drop shoes shift my hips and totally takes out my back.

thanks for your comment. I had the same experience with minimalist shoes even with long transition periods. Great for those who found relief, though. I have spinal stenosis and for many years had high cushioned shoes but now want to get into something that is not barefoot but will help my back. I just thought I was going insane since every video on barefoot or minimal shoes made it seem like they work 100 percent of the time and if they don't it's always user error. Hope you're doing well.

I’ve had terrific luck with neutral Saucony shoes. Cohesion has been an affordable model I’ve found. Thanks

If you have no arch like me barefoot walking will have your back dying in a few minutes.

I learned from the army and having bad shoes. I would run a lot, obviously, but replace them every 3 months at most. They hurt my knee and back. But nowadays I have plantar fasciitis and trying to find the right shoe is hard.

Have you ever had lower back pain and tried to run in zero drop shoes? It makes it worse. Unless you have strong feet and strong back. So people with back pain shouldn’t wear them in my opinion.

I need a shoe for standing stationary for extended periods of time. What do you recommend most for standing still with minimal movement?

Altra's are too narrow, and my inside of my feet are laying on top of the frame. So sick of shoes that come in too much (narrow) mid foot! Hoka does the same thing.

How do you do this gradually? Are there insoles you would recommend that can help step down the angle of the heel to the ball of the foot? I've worn boots for the last 15+ years and when I wear anything more flat/neutral I get a ton of lower back pain. To the extent that the second day I can barely walk or stand. I've been trying different shoes, but I can't afford the constant trial and error. I ordered custom wide Vans for the wider toe box, and had no luck. I tried Merrill hiking shoes and they do fit better and in a wide, but the shoe has this little dimple in the heel and it causes me lower back pain as well. Any recommendations for someone wanting to step down into this gradually?

Listen to your body. If you have no pain with heeled shoes why change it? Especially if flat shoes cause pain. I don’t think there is a gradual step down like inserts or anything but I would just spend more and more time walking barefoot. Start small and add more time over time.

I had l5/s1 rupture with disc nucleus extrusion, had some issue over the years although I run several marathons/HM bearing that pain. Now am pain free but my disc integrity is comprised (annulus fibrosis is broken). Please can you tell me, is running hard for the discs if there is already damage in the disc structure but pain free? Can running worsen the disc condition and cause reherniation? For example to run limited minutes per week like 3 times , max 10km per training, but I like to run faster intervals, not only lite jogging on all trainings? Thanks

My problem is when I walk I get upper back aches. I put most of the pressure on my heels. Would you recommend zero drop shoes for this?
