Your channel is a wonderful inspiration for all of us in the states, even a fat old white woman like me. I’m recently retired but not feeling safe in this crazy US. My folks are no longer needing me to care for them. My kids can figure out life without me.

I just love your interviews/conversations. They are always a learning experience. I live in a very blue area and we don’t have gun stores, but it was still so jarring to hear Margarette mention it. In the US, it’s just so normal in so many places. But it’s not normal in any way to have stores that sell weapons, and in many states they are sold to almost anyone off the street. It’s awful. It was very nice to hear from Margarette about her experience!

I have lived in Houston most of my life (62 years now) and I LOVE the heat and want to move somewhere when it never gets below 75 degrees and I never have to wear a coat. The humidity has never bothered me. I'm considering several different countries once I'm retired.

I've missed the last few live sessions bc...spring. it's that time of year and gardening is calling. Having said that, and Idon't know if you've addressed this topic before, but what is your suggestion regarding cellular phone service in Portugal? While we were there In February, we were able to use our T-Mobile network w unlimited texts & data but calls were $.25/min. I think my bill for that week was approximately $35 more. So, is it OK to stay w the service one has in the US, or are there Eurozone services that are better options? And if so, which?

Do you find that most expats prefer to rent vs buy when they relocate? Amongst the expats that prefer to rent, what is the most common reason for renting vs buying?
@yumyumkitty21047 ай бұрын
Well, for me, I don't want to deal with all the legalities of whatever the particular country requires (zoning stuff, signing off on a ton of legal paperwork), the slow bureaucratic process (confusion, finding the right help, the language barrier, having to go back to the govt offices several times, long lines), not knowing if you're gonna wind up with crappy neighbors, etc. At least with renting or Airbnb, you can move if you don't like it or maybe extend your stay if you do. With Airbnb, you don't have to pay utilities/wifi/fix repairs, etc. Just my .2 cents. 😊
@OurBlackUtopia7 ай бұрын
I think most are good with renting, and suggest to hold of on buying at least your first yer because there is alot to learn, Laws, language banking how the government works etc.
@stephs177 ай бұрын
@@OurBlackUtopia I get it. I was just curious because I noticed that most of the expats/immigrants that I watch on the interviews are choosing to rent. I want to buy despite the obstacles just because I need the stability ( I hate moving 😂 ) and want to make Spain my forever home.
@stephs177 ай бұрын
@@yumyumkitty2104 I understand. I'm hoping that I will be able to find a trusted agent and attorney to help me through the process. I'm two years away from buying so I will be renting until then. I just hope the prices don't go up much in the next 2 years 😬
@OurBlackUtopia7 ай бұрын
I hate moving too, but I have heard horror stories. For instance, here it is not common to put contingencies into your contract and the "earnest money" is more of a non-refundable deposit of about 25% of the purchase price. 😳. Also adjustable rate mortgages are the norm here - we only know 1 person who has managed to get a fixed rate mortgage.

I wouldn't. Portugal is pissed at all of the Americans moving there. At some point Portugal is going to make your lives a living hell.
@OurBlackUtopia7 ай бұрын
My life was a living hell in the US. Portugal is not pissed at Americans. A country cannot have emotions. Portuguese people are pissed that the government instituted immigration laws without putting protections in place for their community. There are 30+ Million people that live in Portugal. Of that 30M about 6000+ are American. So you tell me how in the hell are WE the problem? Meanwhile the majority of Golden Visa's went to Russians, French and Chinese...but let's not let facts get in the way of opinions.

Just an idea that I would like you to think about. Not everyone who has health problems didn’t “take care of themselves”.. I was an athlete before I found out that I had an auto immune disease. You don’t know why someone is ill or why they are in poor health. To insinuate that if someone didn’t take care of themselves, that Portugal isn’t a good place for them to come is a little insensitive. Perhaps a better way to put that is just to say that if someone has significant health problems, that may be Portugal is the wrong move for them. It’s all about terminologies and how we come off to people.
@OurBlackUtopia5 ай бұрын
Fair enough - one of our good friends here was an athlete, and her knees are shot - these slippery cobblestones are an issue. I kinda liken my statement to what teachers used to do when they would fuss out the classroom for acting up while she was called away. I never took it personally because I knew that she wasn't talking about me. Out of all of the people who are 60+, what percentage do you think are in your situation and what percentage do you think stopped exercising, continued to eat and drink whatever as if they were still teens, and then are surprised when they're on high blood pressure and cholesterol meds? You, my love, are the exception to the rule.
