I always figured that when viewing this bird from a distance, the white head in contrast with the brown body made it look like it was missing feathers there, hence the name “bald”

I'd be careful about meeting one unless you meet one at an animal shelter or preserve like Spirit. Bald eagles are predators and will seriously harm people even if you don't intend to threaten them. The best rule of thumb is to leave all wild animals alone for everyone's benefit.

I wonder if there are many people out there that know that a bald eagle does not grow their white feathers on their head until they are around 5 yrs old. Until then they are mostly all brown. So a lot of people mistake them for a golden eagle until they get their white feathers. Fun fact!

I’m guessing it’s due to the founder of the school’s heritage. Either Scottish or Irish. But yours sounds way cooler!! Anyway I didn’t know about bald eagles until I started watching a guy on KZbin that rescues birds of prey mostly but he will take any animal that has injuries and needs some help and healing time. He’s a great guy. Been doing it for 50 years!

I've also heard "bald" is short for "piebald" (black and white) or "skewbald" (any other color and white). Naturally my teacher from forty years ago went with "the white feathers on their head made them look like they were bald from a distance" instead.
