I am a UK 14, with wider than average hips and thighs. I absolutely LOVE 60s/70s fashion, but I unfortunately never find anything that is suitable for my body type. Because of that, I can’t dress how I really want to - but I still love to watch content surrounding the fashion ❤

I’m a UK 16. I buy 60’s/70’s styled dresses from Joanie Clothing and I’ve got some amazing 70’s styled denim jumpsuits from Urban Outfitters, Cider, and I just bought thin summer ones from BooHoo (plus sizes are still in stock and start at size 16)

As a US size 20, I never find vintage pieces to fit me. I just find modern pieces that can be styled in a vintage way. I’m so thankful there’s some vintage-inspired companies that are size inclusive!!

The fact that I cant find vibtage clothes in my size is exactly why i plan to learn how to sew. It will be difficult and take time for me to be good at it but i think it will be so rewarding. I'll be able to see something i love and just make my own, And that is SO powerful!!

So we’ll said Emma, I really appreciate you taking the time to speak on this topic because as someone who works at a vintage shop, I hear people coming in with these misconceptions all of the time. It breaks my heart that some people don’t feel like there’s space for them in vintage because of their size, because there’s truly always room for groovy folks.

I’m a UK 16/18 and I can’t find any actual vintage clothing but I dress vintage styled every day. I buy 60’s/70’s style dresses from Joanie Clothing and I’ve got some amazing 70’s styled denim jumpsuits from Urban Outfitters, Cider, and I just bought thin summer ones from BooHoo (plus sizes are still in stock and start at size 16) My statement piece is a vegan-leather Afghan coat from Queen The Label all the way from Australia (I’ve actually got two, one in tan and one in black.)

I love that dress on you, Emma, the pattern is dreamy and the colour suits your dark hair. My mom is a child of the 60s; she still mends her clothes and rarely buys new clothes and when she does, she usually thrifts. She would even mend holes in her socks but she has arthritis in her hands now and she's just over it lol so she doesn't mend the socks anymore.

I'm in no way plus size, so I know vintage is much more accessible to me, but I did gain weight recently and had to part with a lot of beloved vintage pieces. Also, the timing of this video is great. I ordered a dress online that cost me quite a lot of money, waited a month and a half for it to arrive, thought it got lost in the mail. Today I finally got it. The moment I tried to put it on, it ripped and it's beyond repair 😢 So now I know it's not my body, vintage clothes are just small.

This problem is mainly due to the change in diet, as explained by the Deakin University Obesity Prevention Center (Melbourne, Australia) in rich countries the obesity epidemic began in the early 1980s, when people began to spend more on junk food. In low- and middle-income countries it started later but spread faster.

I'm from Canada & plus size, and it's extremely hard to find vintage pieces that fit me. I have been all different sizes over the years and when i was a XS or S and even M, I could ALWAYS find plenty when i would thrift/vintage shop. Its frustrating. Great video ❤

Honestly, I have the opposite experience. 99% of the clothes in offline thrift stores are in sizes XL+ and I'm S/36. 🤷

Here in Germany in vintage shops, on Ebay or Vinted I strangely often find bigger sizes that are like a modern 42, 44+ I would have to get tailored or dresses for teenagers that are just too small for grown-ups.
@fireflythinking1290 Жыл бұрын
Very interesting video 😊 ! Strangely I thought it was the contrary, that people were bigger before the 90s because in thrift shops I don't usually see old clothes that are my size (XS or S), but maybe it's because they sell very quickly 🤔. Yes to skinny people not buying bigger sizes to take them in, it's hard if the piece is really cool, but everyone deserves to find unique pieces that fit them 😊

Here in the US, I have always experienced the complete opposite. I see many, many more larger sizes. It's challenging to find smaller sizes. I'm not super slim, a little curvier, and I'm petite.

Is it just me but I wish the term "plus size" did not exist, plus size to what and why not say " minus" size? We are all whatever size we are, this is a general observation on the term and absolutely not a personal critique to Emma Ross who is a beautiful soul. I hear this term everywhere and I think i think its unnecessary

In the 60's people were much thinner than they are now, just watch videos and documentaries of the time of ordinary people (not only movies). The American diet of junk food didn't exist yet and most people walked or biked. I love the fashion of the 60's. Since I was little people have told me I'm skinny and should eat more, but I eat healthy and stay in an xs at 30 years old, which is not so common for a Latina, people still criticize my body but following the 60's style helped me to accept myself and not get caught up in trends and stereotypes.

Janis Joplin wasn’t super skinny & she looked amazing most of the time. Btw, your audio keeps going in & out. 🤷🏼♀️

You’re right! I thought about including her, but then didn’t, because she still fit the straight sizes. However, I do agree that she’s definitely not representing the classic 60s desirable body. She was so beautiful tho! Thanks for letting me know about the audio. There’s some sort of issue going on with me uploading it where the audio keeps getting messed up. I’ll try to fix it 🌼

Diet has changed over the years, simple as that, people just didnt eat so much junk food, especially in the U.K, people were naturally very slim, war/rations etc.. just look at the Stones, prime example.
@EmmaRosaKatharina Жыл бұрын
Interesting! I agree but only to a certain degree. Weight has gone up in general however not everyone was slim in the 60s & 70s. More people certainly were, but not all of them. Also the mass media pretty much exclusively portrait thin people fitting the times beauty standard. But I think the junk food aspect it also very true 🌼
