When Ahlam came to Germany as a refugee in 2015, she was surprised to be confronted with fear and rejection. But where does that come from? And what can we do about it? In 2016 Carina and Ahlam came up with "Life Back Home", a program to connect young refugees with young locals in German schools. Ahlam is a Yemeni activist, now living in Berlin. She graduated with a degree in Business Management from Sanaa University and has been widely speaking on rights and inclusion of women in Yemen before and after the revolution. After the beginning of the civil war, Ahlam moved to Berlin, Germany, where she has been granted the status of a refugee.
Together with Carina she began talking about her country and her story to German high school students which was the beginning of the project “Life back Home” that creates a dialogue between young refugees and young locals in schools all over Germany.
Carina is an advocate for intercultural learning, currently living in Berlin. With her NGO The Global Experience she promotes cross cultural exchange programs, both online and in schools around the globe.
She is also the co-founder of Easy Languages, an online series with over 400.000 subscribers and more than 70 Million hits on KZbin, that promotes authentic language learning and cultural exchange through online video.
With their most recent project "Life back Home” Carina and her team invite young refugees to school classes all over Germany in order to increase the dialogue and understanding between young locals and young immigrants. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
