Why Are You Still Fat?
Many people take up cycling to lose weight and for a lot of them, riding a bike has certainly helped them lose a few kilos. However, for some people, it doesn't matter how much they ride their bikes or how hard or fast they cycle, they are still overweight.
One of the question I am frequently asked is why are you still fat if you ride a bike? The answer s very simple: its because losing weight is more about what you eat than how much you cycle.
Losing weight is actually 80% diet and only 20% exercise so even if you cycle hundreds of kilometres a week but don't eat healthily, it will be very difficult to lose weight.

I didn’t get into cycling to lose weight, I was just obsessed with the rush of going fast on my bike, the weight loss just came as a side effect.

I got back into it more to build my conditioning back up. I've done hiking and mountaineering for years, but it has gotten really hard on my feet so got back into mountain biking as a way to build my endurance back up (and hopefully lose some weight) without pounding my feet to hell and back.

Great video! I was literally 100kg when I started cycling around 5 years ago. I was pretty self conscious at the start and just wore t shirt and leggings but soon got fitter and the weight dropped off. I'm around 65kg now so lost so much weight and it's cycling and plant based diet that have helped do that :)

'No one is perfect' A truer word never spoken Sir! I have had weight issues since a chubby 15 years old, being good at football and cricket, the 'slim' kids used it as a weapon to bring me down. I'm 58 now and still have body issues. I know it's a mental thing cos others tell me different. I cycle train and weight train for my other track sport and still beat myself up every now and again. Scarred by my tormenters - it's stuck with me 'mentally' for good now! The fact that you're getting out there on your bike and riding it like a proper rider is very inspiring to many. I would be honoured to ride along side you Sir! Keep with it and ride well!

As a person who has been obese most of his adult life, but managed to lose 50 or more pounds five times, I know for a fact your comments about diet in addition to exercise is spot on. I'm now a senior citizen who had ignored diabetes for a decade before having a mild stroke in 2015. When in the hospital with the stroke, they detected that I'd also previously had a heart attack due to two completely blocked arteries. After having an ICD installed in my heart in early 2016, I asked three doctors (GP, Cardiologist and Cardio surgeon), if I could start to exercise at least slowly. All three said yes but rolled their eyes. I just love motivation. At that time I was 233lbs (6ft tall). I made three major changes, I started to walk(6 days) and eventually run/walk (3+3) six days a week, started eating healthier (mostly stir-fries) with reduced portions and cut out all bread and junk foods. I still eat meat but included more seafood than before. This worked well and I got down to 180lbs by 2020. The winters always messed up my workouts (Arctic Vortex is as bad as it sounds) and I'd end up gaining 6 or more pounds during that time. Not to mention lost motivation after the holidays, which is historically dangerous for me. In the fall of 2020 I purchased a bike (Trek FX2 workout hybrid) and an indoor trainer Saris H3. Those purchases were a revelation as I no longer gained weight in the winter plus am down to 165-160lbs with a body fat 14-12%. I ride either indoors or out, weather dependent, 3 days a week and run 5km on the alternate three days (all year around). I've reduced my diabetes meds down to 25% of the 2015 amount with an A1C in the "pre-diabetic" range. In 2020, when I first road my bike I was on a wide open stretch of bike path when I noticed that my face was hurting. It took me a moment or two to realize I had been grinning from ear to ear for so long my face muscles hurt. That was the moment I realized I'd found an enjoyable low-impact sport, that I could do when high-impact running was no longer an option. My Grandfather was known to have cycled at least until he was 83 years old but he'd never been obese. This last December I picked up my first road bike (Trek Domane Gen4 SL5) as I've focused on endurance riding doing 70+km three times a week and hope to do that this outdoor season as well. Being retired you consider every day to be Saturday ;) I hope others, who struggle with weight loss, can derive some inspiration from my own experience. Thanks for your contributions to the cycling community.

I lost more than 40 pounds once around 15 years ago. It was funny though since it wasn't planned at all, I wasn't really dieting, and I was only at 182 to begin with for 71". I was just running a lot and I randomly changed some things for what I was eating. I did gain all that back after a couple of years, and that was mostly due to dropping the running for a few years, before I started with the bikes again. But I'll tell you, when I was keeping under 140 pounds at my height, it looked kind of scary! Anyway, I'm right in the high 170s now and that's reasonable for me and under 25 BMI.

Hi Leonard, i´ve been watching some of your videos and what caught my attention was your positive disposition and just wanting to do something that you love, in this case riding a bike. In all my years of cycling i met several people who just gave up on the exercise because they weren´t getting any results ie weight loss, and they don´t realize riding a bike is so much more than just losing weight. I am a 42 year old man who loves riding a mountain bike everywhere, i´ve been riding all my life and started with an old rusty second hand bike in my sixth birthday, it was a present given by my loving Mom. Since then i just got more and more in love with the idea of just going anywhere without spending any money for the trip, i mean the sense of freedom is just amazing and having fun with friends is just so rewarding, if you are planing any trip soon just spend a week or two in Portugal, thats where i live, here you can find amazing routes for all your bike rides, try Sintra, the Lisbon area and Algarve, the route to Fatima, and the amazing region of Douro the wine country. So keep riding, keep making the videos, i think you are an inspiration to people who are not sure if riding a bike is a good idea, the videos will help them make the decision.

leonardmlee, 53 years old lost 25 kg going low carb diet 5 years ago and kept it down. . Then started once I got into cycling a lot more to take carbs but restricting them more to when it made sense, just before, during and immediately after. Or for events in days preceding too. What the low carb diet did for me is to allow me to loose fear of fat, stick to good ones of course, and also I lost the fear of going hungry and thinking of food as much. I think you will find it equally useful. Give it at least a try for 5 weeks, winter now is perfect time.

I’m going to tell my story about losing weight. I started with a weight of 127kg.......my wife has been diagnosed with diabetes type 2 in april this year. The advies to her was to look after what you eat, how much you eat and def no sugars anymore. We’d also eat first white bread......now we eat coarse whole grain bread instead. I support her diet plan she was given....so I started the same as her......(sorry for my bad english.....dutch guy) in the period from april to july I lost about 15kg of body weight by only to keep an eye on my food......in july I bought a bike to fasten up the losing weight proces. .....it kinda works....I was a bit bummed why my weight didn’t go down as fast than i didn’t ride my bike.....but that was pretty simple .....muscle development. Now in about 8 months time, I lost 23kg of weight! Just by watching my food and riding my bike. I try to go out on my bike twice a week and do about 50 tot 75km’s per ride..... Another thing.....if i’m on my bike...i use sugars...like an enerybar or energygel......my drink while i’m on the road is an isostar drink wich also contains sugar.....as said...I use this only when i’m biking! If i’m not on the bike is evertything sugar free......as much as possible though. But I understand your point Lennart.......if you are feelings happy as you are ...be that way.....do nothing what other people expect from you. Do what you like! Best regards Rob

When I started cycling I was hoping to loose weight but it wasn’t my main motivation, I actually ended up putting on weight due to overcompensating with my food following a hard effort on the bike. After a couple of years of static weight despite cycling improvements, I came to the conclusion that trying to get better on the bike and loose weight at the same time are not compatible goals. I’ve spent the last three months focusing on weight loss and not done very much on the bike at all, no hard efforts just very low intensity turbo sessions. I’ve managed to loose 60 lbs and am now looking forward to putting in some real training on the bike, and being able to fuel properly before and after. Once again a fabulous video full of honesty and good humor. Maintaining a great self image and accepting who you are is mandatory for physical and mental health. I am 67 and started cycling heavily about 3 -4 years ago when I had several close friends get sick suddenly and die in short order and others started with the knee and hip replacement procedures as sports injuries, excessive jogging, and obesity beat the hell out of their joints. Cycling brings an enormous amount of joy and sense of accomplishment after climbing the steep grade, finishing the long ride and enjoying nature.I also modified my diet significantly and suddenly BP became perfect, cholesterol dropped to very low levels and blood work became perfect. Weight fell to same weight I was when I graduated college 45 years ago. If you feel comfortable with yourself and your general health is good then you are doing it correctly. Also....one cannot fight genetics. Keep it going Leonard and have the occasional sticky bun once you have EARNED it!

I, too, am an overweight cyclist. I'm in my 30's, and could stand to lose at least 50 pounds. I learned not long ago that a healthy diet will contribute more to weight loss than routine exercise. I'm currently in the process of shedding pounds in preparation for Biking Across Kansas (BAK) this summer. While we have our share of scenery in this state, your cycling videos make me want to move to the UK. Everything seems so picturesque. Thanks for sharing!

Amen, my brother in spirit. Another goodie. Not much else to be said. OTOH, I've been off the bike about a month now, due to a med issue. Keeping in mind your previous films on de-training, esp. factoring in my age, I'm worrying about the rampup time to get back to shape, in this cold off-season, when/if I am able. Looks like it'll be a gym-trainer winter. Keep up the good work, and thanks for your channel.

Hi Leonard, just found your YT channel and have already watched quite a few of your videos. I must say that I always find your views to be refreshingly frank and honest, which coupled with your wicked sense of humour , makes for a very entertaining 10 minutes or so each time. Thank you :-) I can't remember a time when I haven't struggled with my weight (63 years old and circa 16 stone/100kg), which isn't a foodie thing, it's more to do with my love for wine lol! Consequently I've started going out on my bikes again (usually on the road) this year to improve my cardio and to get fitter in general, which does appear to be working in terms of losing fat and gaining muscle. I've covered some 860 km on various rides over the last three months or so, but am keen to keep going. Consequently I find your videos to be very inspiring, so keep em' coming my friend and long may it continue. Well done, regards from Bedford UK

Once again you have helped lift my spirits and reduce the level of my own self deprecation. I am a 200+ Kg man in my 50s and have struggled with my weight for some time. I ride as much as my schedule will allow (about 50-60 miles/week at my best and less 10/week at my worst). My love of cycling outweighs my concern for what others may think of me in lycra, but I do admit that when my weight pendulum is in the upswing, the depression creeps in and pushes me down. And yet, I will ride; today, tomorrow, next week, whenever I can manage the time for it. I will ride because it makes me feel good. Thank you for putting in the time to publish your rides and your vlogs. It means a lot to many of us that also struggle with our weight and health issues. Live to ride - Ride to live!!

This is a great part of an introduction to the most significant public health and well being issue that we face, against the counterpoint of stigma, shame, and discrimination. Cycling remains the most accessible and feasible exercise for many folk, along with swimming. There is enough here for its own channel. Time for less opinion, less smug supercilious comments, and a move to acceptance: this is a starting point, not approval or defensiveness. I like your channel ad think you are an exceptional advocate for the enthusiastic and imperfect majority of us!

Leonard, I just love your videos & they help to motivate me. You are correct that " you can't ride off a bad diet". For me personally, the biggest dietary error was eating everything in the fridge after a Ride. I now do the last 10km at low speed & use it to meditate and relax. That way my appetite is curbed & I can make better choices. THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR VIDEOS

Very powerful discussion, Leonard. You are an inspiration to many. It's great, that you even search out hills to ride. I ride with a senior group once a week. We ride local bike paths, but most of them, ride 25-28 miles , 4-5X a week. Two are in your category. It's mostly a social event, but, hey, it's still 25 miles. For me , I have a fondness of the local hills. And yes, we are MAMIL ! (Maybe it should be called SAMIL)Ride on. KB.

i enjoy your videos.I struggle with weight but ride a bike at least 10 mile a day. yesterday i rode 20 mile with out being getting tired. It is very easy for me to lose weight but I dont always eat healthy. My last trip to the doctors last week my blood work came back great fit as fiddle. I For me I really have to reduce caloric intake to lose weight, low carb low fat 1000 calroies a day I feel at my best and I lose weight.I have tried keto lost 35lbs and feel incredible but keto is hard to stay on.I dont know what advice I could give you but some people have a harder time keep the weight off then others including my self. Both of us would be healthier if we were lighter but we are probably healthier then some thinner people.I dont always equate thin with healthy.Keep up the vids I enjoy them and dont stop biking regardless of how big we are I think we gain great benefits from it.I wish you all the best.

Excellent storytelling - from a fat person no less. :) As a new subscriber and long-time amateur videographer and photographer myself, I must say that I truly enjoy your videos and applaud you for your video making talents. I am 51 and recently had a ❤️ attack due to heredity; poor diet and lifestyle. I am back on track with exercising regularly and have lost 2lbs per week for the past 10 weeks or so. It’s a lot harder to make those pounds cone off at this age, but if you’re willing to suffer a little (or a lot) to make it into your golden years, I think it’s a fair tradeoff. A little exercise and diet beats a heart attack any day!
