Do we really know what we should be eating? Multi-award winning expert Tim Spector argues we might not. Professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College London and honorary consultant physician at Guy's and St Thomas' he aims to point us in the right direction so we know the hard truths behind food fads, dieting, nutrition and gut health. Having written five books, including the bestsellers Spoon-Fed and The Diet Myth he is one of the most cited scientists in the world. His research aims to debunk eating myths and answers the most important questions like should we be calorie counting? What should we be eating for our gut health and why do most diets fail?

Such an interesting discussion! My twin and I have been in the twin study since birth, it's an incredible study. We love hearing about all the exciting scientific developments, proud to be a tiny part!

Hi Grace I really enjoy your podcasts. Although I only listen to them here and there. I love the complete diversity of topics and guests, giving me the opportunity to dip my toes in whenever something peaks my interest. It makes me want to learn more! Also thank you for being your imperfect self. Somehow it feels more down to earth that you aren't a super slick interview professional. ❤

I suffered this interview because of Tim Spector. This young woman seemed genuinely uninterested until the discussion was about her lifestyle.

Interesting conversation. I would really like to hear a discussion about intermittent fasting and how it might effect a wider range of topics, not just gut health. There are studies that conclude that fasting for 10+ hours may not be beneficial for female hormonal health for example. I get that ”an averidge overweight and sedentary joe” might benefit from it, but this discussion simply left out all the active people who actually enjoy exercise. Allthough yes the topic was about gut health and public health… but maybe it would have been nice to then emphasize that. (:

I would like to know more about men vs women in these studies, there are very few studies done on women and we are not the same and often skipping breakfast can cause issues with our hormones. I think it's important to specify the difference here
@ericaneves4678
@ericaneves4678 11 ай бұрын
I don’t think you necessarily need to skip breakfast, if you want to eat when you get up that’s fine. It’s about leaving that 12/14 hour window of not eating for your gut to be able to digest properly. All that word means is breaking your fast, you can do that at any time of day. Xx

This answered my weight issue...I have Lyme disease (6 years before diagnosed) and have been on antibiotics for 2 years and obviously they aren't as effective anymore, and I can't lose any weight. It feels like I'm on the losing side because I try to stay off them but my joint pain and cognitive decline get to the point where I have to go back on them. I have started fermenting my own food sauerkraut, kefir, kombucha hoping it helps. I've even tried bee venom therapy instead of antibiotics I'm literally willing to try witchcraft at this point lol

I think the processes foods an sugar and refined wheats mostlyt all flower products aren benifitting yr health. I do think investigating te beliefs and thoughts can be very useful. I love Christiane beerlandt her book the key to self liberation giving a detailed background on 1300 dis eases. It is very difficult to choose the routh that ye body is the signal you are not following te gut and health and soul but fear is the main driver to yr choices. Why is sweet fatty food so popular, because it is soothing our struggle and pain, alcohol and other drugs can be useful ass well to relieve the emotional pain. It is easier to blame the tick or the virus or the cancer❤good luck

Always wary of a scientist that only plugs research that he has done himself, funded through his own business. I'd really love this discussion to be less one-sided. To include some counter-claims or even others who support the same claims. It's like we just have to simply trust his word about the research and science that his organisation has carried out. He raises some interesting points but to simply take it all without question or any discussion points from yourself - I think some nuance is lost and you've missed an opportunity to really pull out some deeper thinking.

His business have a podcast called the Zoe podcast and they do have other scientists/ experts from around the world, in similar and different health related fields and they tackle all sorts of topics, views and research projects… not just Tim Spector. If you did want that more well rounded view. I find it really interesting

@@molly104 🤣Professor Spector has a similar attitude to the "all of us" types too. He mentions it frequently in his books and interviews, although he is talking for himself rather than speaking on behalf of everyone in "diet and health research", as are you, apparently.

@jane5789 what does he say in his books etc about other scientists? Genuinely interested in your opinion. I was just trying to say we cringe at people who have serious skin in the game. A requirement of business is to sell yourself, brand, and product. Scientists don't really play that game is all, we're interested in the evidence and if we get too invested we lose sight of the truth. Hype obscures truth.

Love the podcast but oof, I found this pretty triggering and difficult to listen to. I think a lot of people will suffer from authority bias listening to this and some of the recommendations like fasting and stopping snacking could be really detrimental to your relationship with food.
@rhiannonb7203
@rhiannonb7203 11 ай бұрын
But his whole point wasn’t meant to be super prescriptive but instead to just to give fasting a go as it works for lots of people but if it doesn’t work for you, then no worries. We are all very different with our own unique microbiomes!
@Rachael2d
@Rachael2d 11 ай бұрын
@@rhiannonb7203 Absolutely, I agree the same thing isn’t going to work for everyone. But I think a lot of people (including me a few years ago when I wasn’t in a good place with food and with my body) would only hear a doctor saying “to lose weight you should time restrict and stop snacking”, which is exactly what he did say when Grace asked him what advice he has for people wanting to lose weight. It’s only at the very end that he starts to walk it back a bit.
