There's a HUGE shift happening in the 3D community and it all starts with Blender! More and more artists are discovering just how powerful this free, open-source, software is and making the switch from expensive suites like Cinema 4D and Zbrush, to Blender. Today we're going to talk about the most useful features of Blender, what it's capable of, and why artists are using Blender for 3d animation, 2d animation, compositing VFX, rendering, modeling, sculpting, and so much more! This software is packed with features and hopefully, by the end of this video, you'll have a clear understanding as to whether or not learning Blender is worth it for you!

I started Blender in 2010, with 2.49 version. At that time, specially with the 2.5 version, I felt that Blender was the future. More than 10 years later I'm even more certain of that.

Same here - I dabbled off and on preferring the updated UI to the original. What finally forced me to come to grips, (and fall in love w/Blender), was when HardOPs and BoxCutter were released! I just HAD TO HAVE that hard surface modeling workflow! I haven’t looked back since! With the CAD modeling addons in the works, I’m hoping to be able to eventually drop Fusion 360 as well, for my hobbyist 3D printing endeavors!

I'm sure people thought that even before that. But I felt the same, and I started around 2.5, or 2.7, don't remember. Probably 2.7, wait, maybe I still have some old files lying around in my old computer's disk, yep, I think it was 2.78. I was playing with voronoi fractures and constraints at the time, I was fascinated by virtual destruction, lol.

@Zombies Eat Jerky Not sure why you're so angry, haha! Yeah free stuff opens up the community to everyone and you'll find ego for sure. But nothing I haven't experienced from the decades I spent using 3DSMax. It was ego from the other users that put me off Blender for so long. So yeah, in summary, more to weed out in terms of finding resource but I have a couple of reliable Patreon subscriptions that I stick to. I’m using 3dsmax solely because it can translate Solidworks to fbx files that I can use in Sketchfab and Twinmotion. If Blender could do that I would take the time to learn it. I sculpt in Nomad Sculpt which is almost free and runs on an iPad and even my phone. I can then paint my models in Procreate which is also nearly free and also runs on my iPad. Max is free too if you’re a student btw.

The blender GUI concepts take a good minute to understand, but once you’ve gotten deep enough to start saving opening states and enabling pie menus it’s straight crazy powerful. Nodes aren’t exclusive to blender though. There’s entire programs that are basically node based media creation IDEs. TouchDesigner is crazy good for instance.

for me blender is the gift that keeps on giving. its free and has so many features and aspects that your creation can come to life in infinite variations. for months ive done hard modeling, learned nodes, modifiers and animations. i only now got into actual sculpting and its a whole different beast to tackle. countless possibilities. this is the first time i can express and create and its been incredible so far and it being open source and completely free is a game changer. as any artist, improving your skillset to come as close as you can to your vision is the most important thing and blender gives you everything you could ask for and more. not to mention all the great people creating tutorials for people to learn and understand the program. if you wanna create something and look up tutorials, you can be sure that everyone has their own methods for creating that thing and thats what i love about blender. no matter whos tutorials you watch, you always learn new tricks, workarounds and methods to be efficient and precise. all roads lead to rome.

I love blender and use it heavily since 2.8. The improvements are great in all categories. Sculpting is fun too, even i still use zbrush, not only because of old habits, but because of its speed and the ability to handle really heavy models and details. This is what i mostly need for concepts. But for stylized stuff, Blender becomes more and more my Swiss army knife. My wish for the future are better UV handling and somehow uncluttered Texture painting. In 3.3 its very good, but the logic don't follow the workflow mostly.

One of the many things I like about Blender, is that it's so gloriously stable compared to a lot of other well established open source software. It is quiet rare for it to crash, and also very rare to run into more minor bugs that won't necessarily cause a crash. One area I wish Blender would work on however, is the image texture painting. It's still capable of basics, but it's not well polished like other features out of the box. And I have run into some annoying bugs when painting a model, like the brush being unable to paint a certain bit of geometry for no apparent reason, but only when the camera is within a certain range of angles. I can usually get around it by finding a different angle, but it takes trial and error to move the camera around and find an angle that works for both the brush stroke I want to use, and that doesn't run into the bug. This breaks my work flow, slowing me down, and is just plain frustrating. So anyway. I hope texturing gets some TLC.

Great breakdown, like many others I started on Max, then moved to Maya for a few years, and now have been trying Blender off and on, trying to get upto speed for production. My personal experience is I find the modeling toolset in Blender much more robust, then plug in some addons and it goes into nitro mode - love it! If I had to compare one aspect with Maya, I would say the UV editor could use improvement - coming from Maya I find the UV editor there pretty powerful and would love Blender to have a more solid toolset for UVs as right now it seems to be a little lacking. However, I also prefer the material/shader system in Blender and the realtime rendering features of Eevee are so damn cool. The fact that we get this all for free is a godsend. With the advent of new hair systems as well, Blender will only get better and better. Will likely see more and more artists move from Autodesk products, hopefully more studios will pick Blender up in the near future.

My biggest gripe with Blender is that it's inconsistent between modes. Eg 3d edit mode has different keys to 2D Grease Pencil. It's just a suite of applications at this point that use a common database. It's good but could defo be improved from a UX standpoint.

@@sebastianosewolf2367 of course. But that is not what he said. He said that it needs UX improvement to be more consistent all over.

Problem is that a lot of big studios still require you to be experienced in 3dmax and/or Maya.
@SoldierXXL
@SoldierXXL Жыл бұрын
This is changing pretty fast with WB Animation studios and Weta FX among others having job listings where experience with blender is now part of the prerequisites especially for 3D modellers/sculptors and it will become more and more common in the future. Also most studios have internal proprietary tools and plugins that you actually can not know in advance and that simplify the workflow A LOT that you learn when you start working at the studio. If you want to have a solid base that covers most things I would recommend Blender , Nuke and Houdini and learning Python knowing your way around those (not necessarily mastering them)

I was looking into blender because I wanted to get into 3D art and making BJD's. I've been wanting to do this for a few years but didn't know where to start. I got a recommendation for Blender on reddit and its far more advanced then I thought it was. I'm overwhelmed but I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun.

I appreciate it's functions and ability to make visual art more open to all but the dependency on visual arts programs make old school techniques more valuable than ever. There's room for both fortunately!

I used Softimage, Cinema4D and Maya till 2002 professionally. But since I discovered Blender in 2001 I waited for the day to switch. Blender is the Emacs of 3D! It rocks!!!

about archviz use, do you recommend the transition from max? in particular about the rendering plugins in max vs blender. and which path do you recommend for learning blender from max? thx!
@khanyawar
@khanyawar Жыл бұрын
@@zdenekburian1366 I would recommend that you give it a try, I have been using 3dsmax since 2004 and I found blender to be more efficient and quick. There are many architecture addons for blender that can really help you with the archviz and blender's cycle's engine is very powerful and they have nvidia's direct support. having said all that for me these are mere tools so go with whatever you feel comfortable and efficient with, for me blender totally works. Cheers
