This video is so helpful. I have a few questions: 1. Once cue sheets are filled out by the production company, do they just email that directly to BMI or ASCAP? 2. Don’t lose hope! It takes a large amount of activity before BMI starts paying, but if you keep at it, it’s only a matter of time before your big break!

First off, thank you for these videos. They are very helpful and full of great info. As a musician new to the industry, I certainly appreciate this. My question is this. All of my songs are registered on BMI correctly, and I have logged all of my performances on BMI Live. It just keeps saying PENDING though. The status never changes. Will I not be paid for these? or does it just take a long time? Thanks for your time sir.

Hey man! that's really interesting. First off, BMI does take about a quarter (3 months) to process and payout royalties. So if it hasn't been that long yet, there's a good chance the royalties are still on the way. Secondly, if you feel that royalties are truly missing, I would reach out to BMI directly. Thankfully you are able to talk to a real human over email and even phone if you have to, so that would be my suggestion if you feel that something is wrong with your account.

Digicert will insist that mail exists at the address given in the company's name for BMI registration. Given that hospitals and the like use manifold LLCs and DBA, one must be very careful with nomenclature and particulars.

Thank you for the informative video. My question is how does one know when a production company is going to use your music so that you can stay on top of them to send in the queue sheets? I mean, is there a way that the production team gives you a heads up on when they’re going to use your music? Sorry but I’m completely new to all this.

If you are working with the production company as let's say the composer of the production, whether it's a show or film, etc, it's your responsibility to stay on top of that. Often they will send it in. You can also offer to fill out the cue sheet for them and both ASCAP and BMI have self reporting systems in place. If you are talking about licensing music to a production, you're still responsible if it is self licensing, or if you are working with a music library, they will take care of that for you as them licensing your music often means $$ for them as well.

Why is it that no one, including yourself, talks about how to register an arrangement of a cover song and I assume that arrangers are eligible to collect royalties? I'm signed up with TuneCore and unfortunately, that issue is ignored? Please advise!

Always double check in your account. Mistakes happen and/or a different % than agreed to could occur. Always watch dog your work. Hope this helps

When your music is streamed, both mechanical AND performance royalties are generated. BMI only pays out performance royalties. Not mechanicals.

@@Metalpazallteway dude its not complicated. BMI collects performance royalties it literally says it on your BMI statements. You need a pub admin to collect your MECHANICAL royalties(not the same as performance).Songtrust and Sentric are examples of publishing administrators online you can use. This is all just the composition side of the royalties. The other side is the Master rrecording. You get those royalties DIRECTYLY from your distributor(Distrokid, tunecore, CD Baby ect). These are 3 seperate royalty streams. Theres no such thing as a one shoe fits all distributor that makes no sense.

If you choose to register with Songtrust to handle your publishing will they ensure that any music cue sheets etc. are sent to BMI or would you still have to do it yourself?

Yes, Songtrust will help you submit your cue sheets. But the production company needs to be the one to fill them out and email them in. Songtrust won’t know the usage unless the production company documents it (since they are the ones actually placing the music in the final edit).

Not on BMI. I'm with ASCAP and you do need a publishing entity with them. Just put 200% as your writer share and this means 100% writing and 100% publishing. Hope this helps. If in doubt, call or email them.

This is not a setting that we can turn on as artists. BMI alone decides if there’s enough reporting activity for you to qualify for the current activity payment.

So, then I ask you: What’s the advantage of joining one? Shawn, I’ve recently received a royalty payment for my music being used on KPBS tv station. So the reason would be to make sure that you’re “inside” the industry payment structures when your music gets used. And not “outside” which guarantees you’ll never get paid.

Hi! I just finished a new EP and registered with CD Baby Pro. And I already added the songs to my BMI account. In the final stages of registration with CD Baby, they asked for BMI IPI # and then they flashed a contract saying I am entering "into an exclusive administration and collection agreement with CD Baby c/o Songtrust for the administration of all musical compositions listed on attached Schedule A." I quit since I wasn't sure what to do. Does this mean that I won't be able to collect through BMI any more? Should I not do this step and say not affiliated? I have many other songs on CD Baby and BMI, but this is a first I have seen this. Thank you for any advice, it is confusing!
