Why book Independent Hotels rather than Chain Hotels?

I feel like I usually tend to go for hotel chains b/c I have in my mind that I will know what to expect at the chains due to standardization, so for some reason that translates to a 'better' stay. I guess this really isn't realistic b/c like you said smaller hotels have to work harder in most cases to compete with the larger hotels so they will likely offer a better stay, I may just have this idea in my mind that chains are better that I can't really back up with any facts. Another big reason that I still stand by is if the hotel doesn't offer online booking I am very unlikely to book a stay there b/c of the convenience factor of setting things up/reviewing online.

Yes! I should have specified that I was referring to good independent hotels...meaning they have an internet presence and are striving for excellent customer service. Just like when you find cheap crummy chain hotels, you can also find some cheap independent hotels. A little research goes a long way.
