Boy do I feel your pain. But you know, whenever you think a girl is of your type, it's easy, just remind yourself you're the guy, and go talk to her casually, proceed with a greeting, act natural, polite (not too much though), ask her if she's free, is the seat beside her taken, don't be cheesy with flirts though, flirts usually work till colleges or less and as everyone grows up a little, sincere and straightforward talk with less beating around the bush works, unless you have time to flirt and you think she'll like it, don't do it. Try to find topics of common interest, and ultimately ask for her number. The key is to ALWAYS ask if she wants to split the bill whenever going out. Don't buy her too many presents unless it's a major occasion, and don't be clingy. On the bright side it all works out.

Let me tell you my small town experience of gender conditioning. When I was in elementary school, my teachers would punish boys by sitting them in between girls. I too was punished. I started talking to the girl I sat next to. We became friends, sort of. It was a while until I was made to realise it was symbolically shameful and "inappropriate" by my peers and teachers alike. This peer conditioning is a root cause of many boys being afraid to talk to girls and vice versa. In my teen years, I saw that the interaction between a girl and a boy was only accepted by friends if it was romantic. That too was a major taboo outside the student circles. I found myself getting awkward when talking to girls myself. It was not very soon wheb I realised that a boy and girl can be just friends and talk like people.

I've had teachers that do the same thing unfortunately. I'm a very introverted person, and I honestly think the fact that they constantly tell me to shut up and do my work when I finally get comfortable is the main reason. The only reason I have friends is because we used to have recess, and now that I'm in highschool I don't have that, so I don't really have a way to make any more
