Hi Christy ☺️I learned this past summer that any level of global impact that one has in the industry sends your brain on a TRIP. Was NOT expecting that. I canNOT imagine how CHILDREN manage. Can’t wait to watch!😄One question I have so far is, do you believe it is the industry’s responsibility to build in mental health support for children, like they provide on set teachers etc., or do you think it should be simply on the parents to do that?

We take being normal for granted. I imagine a lot of child actors would love to have a normal childhood without the other kids pointing fingers or saying "I wish I was you". Or having everything being decided without your input, when you're underage. Both ways of life have pros and cons but, either way, you should never judge. The same thing can apply to adults.

I spent a majority of my childhood and teenage years wanting child stardom. It was rooted of course in my love of performing, acting, singing, etc. Not really having the means or the knowledge about doing it professionally, I finally got an agent midway through college at age 20. After years of learning about the industry through research and watching content from people like you Christy, I don’t think I would have been able to handle it all back then. “There’s a difference between performing casually where a child feels safe, and then taking it to a professional level.” You hit the nail on the head. I’d like to add that it may also help to ask your child why they want something. Especially why they want to be in the industry. They may want it for reasons that can be met elsewhere or on a smaller scale until they’re ready for a larger one, if they’re still into it by then. When I was a kid, I grew in a very abusive and neglectful family. I was an only child so I had lot of time to learn and create and to foster some of my passions and became pretty ok at them. From the time I was 6 until about age 24 I wanted to be famous and in the industry. And if you would have asked me why, I might have said because I want to be liked, loved, treasure and cherished. Maybe I wouldn’t have had those exact words at 6 but you get the point. Looking back, I realized I would have been eaten alive in the industry. I’m deeply deeply emotional and highly sensitive-It’s a blessing and a curse- and I really wouldn’t have done well as far as being judged or scrutinized publicly and privately. And I no longer want to be famous (assuming I even had a chance in the first place 😅) because I see what it’s done to some celebrities’ mental, spiritual and physical well being over the years. And also, the things I wanted, should have been given to me by my parents and family. The industry couldn’t have given that to me in a way that would be forever fulfilling or authentic. The industry should never take the place of a home and family. I would have been at a vulnerable disposition and God only knows how and who would have taken advantage of that. So while I still never had those things, I’m finally beginning to learn that I have value, I can set boundaries and I can help cultivate love in my own home and family with my husband and daughter. So whenever, if ever, she wants to get into the business, the first things I’m going to ask are “Why is that sweet pea?” And “What do you like most about it?” And I’ll go from there. But man…can I just say, parenting is a whole other level of hard lol! 😅

You're absolutely right about this. I can see how alot of child stars can carry trauma or burdens around with them. Especially with the industry growing. For me, Britney Spears, Hilary Duff, you, NSync, etc were really big for me growing up and since the industry has changed, what was good back then may not be considered good in today's standards of things because it's keeping up with times. I can see how alot of celebrities, singers, etc get depressed and revert to suicide, drugs, and alcohol because they aren't the IT thing and it takes a tole on them. It's sad!! I wouldn't want anyone's kids or family to have to go through that. Great video!!

I have so much empathy for child actors in general but the one that really breaks my heart is Linda Blair who played Regan in The Exorcist. I mean, when she got the role, I highly doubt she knew what she was getting into with all the hate, backlash and death threats she received when the film was released. Even though she got an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe and starred in one of the best films of all time, I cannot even begin to imagine the pain and trauma she had to endure at that age.

How awful...
@rainvalentine94443 жыл бұрын
Why did she get death threats?
@RedaDoodles3 жыл бұрын
@@rainvalentine9444 Well, some people thought that she was either possessed or that she was celebrating the devil because her performance was too convincing. When the film was released, Warner Brothers assigned a security team to watch over her 24/7 for six months but the effect of the film at the time was too big and more impactful than people thought it would ever be so after those six months, Linda had to deal with it on her own with her family. She later admitted that the reason why she never had children was because she was subconsciously terrorized someone would come after the baby because she’s still recognized for her role to this day. However, now she’s embraced the film and doesn’t regret being apart of it because it is (indeed) a very important film that goes way deeper in themes than just being about some girl who’s possessed.

My brother and I were in the industry from starting at the age of 9/10, we were never at the scale or level you were at but we did dream to get to that one day. Luckily the industry made me stronger, I was put into various situations that were borderline emotionally abusive from casting directors to acting/dance teachers. BUT as I got older it shaped me. Not everyone gets as lucky. My brother did struggle with one day being PRAISED to the next day being rejected, he is extremely talented and could have made it but once he turned 18 moved out to LA the life consumed him and it went all down hill from there. Thank you for being so vulnerable and coming on here. Anytime someone asks me "how do I get my kid in the business" I advise them against it until the child can juggle school, activities, friends a "normal" life and coherently decide that they want to do this, not the parents.

Film never dies so all the work that you did putting into Even Stevens, Kim Possible all of your other TV shows and movies heck hopefully someone recorded you in beauty and the beast, will live on forever. I hope it didn’t permanently affect you and everybody goes through things when they’re younger even if they’re not a child actor but it’s good that you’re showing the world what it’s like because child actors have and will always exist. The writers of the shows, I give them a lot of credit, and the directors too but they can’t be anything without the actors performing the roles, people should always remember that and that’s where you come in. It isn’t about the beginning it’s about the end and right now you had it up in a good spot and that’s the most important thing. Take care of yourself until next week.

Parents who only lavish praise on the child who is stagey (their social media pages would convince you they only have one child because their other one is just chugging along under the radar). I no longer offer audition prep unless it’s for university.

I’ve always wanted to work as actress. Even in high school how I told my parents to work on television. My parents were concern. Not letting me to be in there. Now as an adult, I don’t mind working on TV. Because I have sense on what happens behind doors I can less be pressure. Whereas teenage or child Elsy, would be into the peer pressure. I was easily getting into that. I don’t mind working in TV, I have sense f what I want what is good and wrong. My Family support me what I do

Christy the characters u played were a HUGE part of my childhood such fond memories I have of me and my sister watching EvenStevens or Kim Possible. I even watched Cadet Kelly with her. I never would have thought u went from there to a really low place. I went through something similar I ended up on the streets using drugs. I managed to turn it around buts it's cool to see how u say that you've gone through some rough stuff in your life went to a low place and still manged to turn it around. It sort of reinforces my belief, that from time to time wains, that no matter what people can change. Believe it or not that's a hard belief to hold onto. I think its safe to say for anyone that grew up with you on their TV screens. We got love for you, I hope that things keep going well for you. I try and support you just by watching your channel. Lots of love from Canada 🇨🇦

Thank you for sharing, Christy. ❤️ I've never been famous and I don't have kids yet, but it's still an important topic to see your opinion about. Especially with so many more kids being famous on KZbin and TikTok than the limited channels we grew up with. That is awesome that you always had school as a safe place to go back to. That is so healthy and I love that. Our society is so judgemental. There's a lot of "what happened" articles and years or even decades after people step away from the limelight they're still scrutinized for deciding to live a normal life, not using their platform correctly, or not "living up to their potential". You're doing super! Blessings to you.

I've ALWAYS heard people say things about how kids shouldn't work in the entertainment industry and honestly I always felt so incredibly torn by that because, well, I love knowing the child actors and what they do and what they bring along in our favorite movies or our favorite music or whatever it is they are famous for yet at the same time I always know that it's a very dangerous road for them and that they should be kids and shouldn't be working yet without them how will movies without children be made or songs without children be made or whatever else involves children be made? Honestly I feel like Christy Carlson Romano said it very best in this video and I honestly feel like she finally gave me the answer which was to educate the child first about the business industry and let them know what they are coming into and have a strong bond with them so that they know that they can come to you and give them something to fall back on in case they do fail in the industry. Well said, Christy, very well said. I love you so much for that. EEP! :)

With the danger of child stardom being a huge topic, I’m still thinking about how many people like Gary Coleman, Erin Moran, and Dustin diamond have suffered a lot in their youth until adulthood. There have also been people like Ron Howard and Bill Mumy who were child stars but they became successful as adults probably because they had parents who cared about them and didn’t exploit them. Christy, if you have HBO Max, I highly suggest that you watch Showbiz kids and it has interviews from former child stars like Henry Thomas, Todd bridges, Mara Wilson, and many more stars. Henry Thomas even mentioned in the documentary that he went to an audition once and that he was rejected because the people at the audition didn’t see him, but only his ET self, which proves that when a child star takes on an iconic role, they can be reduced to type-casting.

@@christycarlsonromano Okay first and foremost thank you so much for responding and you are the reason that I want to go into voice acting as an adult. Secondly, I appreciate how you and Alyson stoner are huge advocates for child stars I think you’ll like Showbiz kids a lot because it does mention things that you and Alyson stoner have talked about.

There are lots of former child stars, teen stars, currently working and not, who’ve come out against the business and shared stories of pain & trauma. So what you said is accurate I believe Christy, I being adopted and abandoned have my own childhood trauma that I’m still not fully healed from and often wonder if I ever will.😔 There are a lot of child stars who also sacrifice themselves for the sake of everyone else’s entertainment sadly too... Great video, thank you as always Christy you keep on rocking and inspiring us.💛

I will say - if money is a motivation for fame it is a fleeting motivation. Money is nice but as an adult I had many years where I’ve realized I was happier when my salary was lower. There’s been times in my life where I could have theoretically lived in a mansion and have been the unhappiest person. I’m glad you moved to Texas - I am about to relocate from California to Tennessee. Although you say you’re not a victim - I really think when you’re a child and taught that there is really only one way for you to go whether it be religion or a career path or what have you it can eventually traumatize you - especially if it wasn’t something you were meant to believe or a career path that didn’t really fit your true character. It seems this has made a healer out of you and perhaps that’s what you were all along. Your words are true and healing these days. The best recourse has when one is trauamatizdd is healing that inner child - parenting yourself to an extent- and once you bring healing to that aspect of yourself most of the hurt goes away. Love this video!

I don’t know if I’ll have kids, but I’ve decided that if I do, and they like performing, fine. But there will be no moving to L.A. or NYC in pursuit of stardom until they’re adults and can make that decision on their own. As kids, they can do community theater, school theater/band/choir, etc. But I won’t be getting them into the “real” industry as kids.

I always wanted to be an actor since I was a kid. But as I matured, my ex-girlfriend told me that being an actor may seem cool and all, but then you got all these paparazzi all over you and magazines would be talking about you and your personal life. Not to forget a darker side of that industry such as being harassed by directors, producers and other sick actors and actresses as well. I'm glad I listened.
