I met Amanda Bynes back in 2007 at a mall. She was signing autographs and meeting fans to promote her short-lived clothing line DEAR at Steve and Barry’s. It was also the time “Hairspray” was coming out. She was THE most stunning human I’d ever seen in my life and my dad was with me and he says the same thing. I’ll never forget how beautiful she looked. And she said, “Hi, you have pretty eyes!” to me and I was so starstruck I never said anything back! I just wish Amanda the best.

another aspect of the “zendaya vs. bella” conversation is their parents. when i first noticed this was seeing them get accused of not actually singing on one of their songs. both of zendaya’s parents came to her defence while bella didn’t have anyone doing that for her. bella has always spoken about not having a good relationship with her mom and how difficult it was while she was on disney. no one really talks about that when they get compared

It's so true! And talk about awful parents, Amanda Bynes's parents were horrible and took advantage of her. Britney's parent's were horrible, clearly. Demi Lovato is another child star who has struggled, and I always thought it seemed like she never had a good support system around her. So crucial for these young women to have people who advocate for them and protect them! In the wake of #MeToo, many of the women not affected had strong support systems.

For both Britney and Amanda, we don’t really know their mental health issues and the extent of the truth. I don’t think they should ever be in the entertainment industry because it can be very manipulative and the parents should have seen it. I come from opposite of the issue. My parent has mental health issues and the gaslighting they do… it is hurtful. Although sympathetic to both and other celebrities, knowing what pain the other side can inflict and lies and accusation… It’s hurtful from the party that does want to help.

I believe Zendaya’s parents are the main reason why she transitioned the way that she did. They are so supportive of Zendaya and she always mentions how her parents keep her grounded. A lot of child actors’ parents use them to fund a certain lifestyle, whereas Zendaya’s parents just wanted the best for her while protecting her. Amazing parenting.

I've always hate when people compliment certain child actors by congratulating them on "not going crazy." It's a tone deaf compliment that ignores the fact that many of these children had to raise themselves under immense amounts of pressure. Also a lot of these children are given way too much freedom at a young age, most likely because they are the breadwinners in their family.

Hell Drew Barrymore grew up in the limelight and was getting wasted and partying before she even hit double digits... So for everyone saying that it's just a Disney Channel thing, it isn't... Jodie Sweeten also had a lot of issues with drugs and alcohol while on the set of Full House... Child stars from all walks of life tend to break under the pressure of Hollywood and probably need therapy and a safe place to try to relax from the high demands of Hollywood... Sorry rant over

Drew Barrymore was failed by her parents and adults around her. Take away "Hollywood" and "child star" from the narrative, and what happened to Drew was straight up negligence and child endangerment. Just part of a long history of "Hollywood" protecting and enabling its abusers.

Especially when you're on a show that is supposed to be "wholesome" like Full House.. Honestly, it's sad that child actors are treated so awful that they have these mental breakdowns. I couldn't imagine being a teen and working a schedule of 12 hours or so every day in a television studio having to do all the work of knowing lines and floor marks and such. I have a hard enough time doing it for things as an adult. Nice to see you made it out the other end and became sane, Christy.

This is one of the things I like the most about the content you put out there and that is a view from someone who has lived in that world. My 8 yr old daughter discovered ICarly and Victorious and even Sam and Cat and just loves the shows. So when I told her that ICarly 2021 was happening she was excited but sad when I told her that the actress who plays Sam has moved on from those roles and her reasons for it. It was a difficult conversation to have but about the same time I discovered your channel and it helped.

I think that there are MULTIPLE factors that lead to a mental breakdown of any kind, not just one thing. It’s just which factor acts as the “straw to break the camel’s back.” Also, Alison Stoner and Demi Lovato have come out with their accounts of what their experiences were like as a DCom child actor, and the problems that came with it. It was from watching Stoner’s story that made me woes of things like lack of child labor laws, lack of proper moral support from friends and family, etc.

@sionnadehr3313

I think the problem we have as a society is that we tend to make idols out of our celebrities. Buying their music, watching their films, becomes a sacrament. Reading news about them - good or bad - is like reading holy scripture. Making ourselves into their image becomes a young girl's (or boy's) sincere dedication. In the case of young kids idolizing child or teen actors and actresses, it becomes dangerous because - as you succinctly point out - these actors and actresses are people and when they break, they break. When they grow up, they have different opinions about what being an adult means, and sometimes it's different from values some parents want to teach their children. And parents have a hard time with this because they also idolize celebrities (or politicians) and aren't always able to come to terms with the fact that their own idols are severely flawed. And the news media keeps lapping up this toxic religious relationship and continue exploiting celebrities and the people who worship them because its makes them soooo much money.

For child stars, I usually think of the three kids from different strokes who suffered badly after the show. Dana Plato also suffered badly because after being type casted, she ended up doing low budget b-movies and adult films until she sadly O’ded while her son died a year later. Gary Coleman is the saddest one of all because his parents took his money from him while he had to perform with an illness on the set of the show. Todd bridges on the other hand, ran into trouble with the law many times and was sexually abused by a close family friend when he was a child. To quote Corey Feldman, “the one problem that Hollywood has is pedophilia.

I think that one of the most important things that is needed to keep child and teen stars grounded is a good family support system. I've noticed that many of the young TV and film stars who go off the rails often don't have this, and sometimes they're left to emotionally fend for themselves and figure out how to deal with fame and fortune on their own, sometimes with disastrous results. Being a teenager can be tough even when you're just an ordinary person, but when you feel like you have a public image to maintain, it can get even tougher, and you start to wonder if people like you for who you really are, or for what they can get from you when they cozy up to you. And it can also be challenging when, one day you're just an ordinary kid going to school and doing kid things, and then the next you have a major role on a film or TV show, and you get tons of fan mail, and fans who surround you when you go out in public, and you're making more money than you've ever dreamed of. That kind of thing can be very challenging to deal with if you don't have the right kind of guidance from your family members. And some families DO keep their famous kids grounded by keeping them involved in ordinary activities, like sports, music lessons, Girl Scouts, etc., and teach them that fame and fortune aren't everything. Sadly, though, with some parents, having a famous child star in their family can turn their heads, and they end up exploiting their kids, and they keep on exploiting them even when it's obvious that the kids are miserable, and don't want to act anymore. And sometimes people who started acting as children, suddenly find that they start losing popularity with the public when they hit their teens and grow out the of "cute stage", and since this usually occurs just as they're used to getting boatloads of admiration from their fans, they suddenly can't handle it when they find out that they're not as popular anymore as they once were. Relatively few child stars can successfully transition into adult stars, and many of them either adapt to the drop in their popularity and keep on making films, or they take a different direction in their lives altogether. One good example of a famous child star who DIDN'T ruin her life by making bad decisions, was Shirley Temple. She was the most famous child star that ever lived, but she also had a loving family, and she also had a tutor who helped to keep her interest in world events alive, which eventually led to Shirley becoming an ambassador years later. Shirley didn't do drugs, abuse alcohol or sleep around and become a poor role model; she made positive choices with her life long after her popularity as a child star faded. But she also had guidance and a good upbringing as well, which helped a lot. When child stars have parents who put their kids' health and emotional well-being over that of film and TV stardom, it really can make a difference! We all have celebrities we admire, for various reasons. Sometimes we just need to remember that, while we might admire these people for their ability to sing, dance, or act, or perhaps they're political figures, they're just as human as everyone else on this planet, and just as capable of making bad decisions as anyone else. We shouldn't be putting these people up on pedestals and then become disillusioned when they tumble off of them, for whatever reason. And I believe that when you actually have a chance to interact with a favorite celeb, whether it's through social media or an in-person interaction, you should try to treat them like ordinary people, as much as possible, because these people, in spite of maybe being more talented, more famous or wealthier than you, are still just human beings, with the same feelings and emotions as the rest of us! And even for some who have made bad decisions somewhere in their past, I don't hold that against them, as long as they have learned from those decisions and moved on with their lives! I have a few favorite celebs that I follow on social media, and I always try to be kind, respectful and supportive when I post on their pages, even if I don't agree with something that they're saying or doing! The world could do with more people being kind to each other on social media, whether they talking to a famous person or not!

But I really hope all those actresses got help and are working through any problems. And Christy which ever problems you had I’m glad that they didn’t become public And you were able to work through them.

I'm glad people are starting to be more empathetic to the unique struggles *theatrically talented* women in the public eye, face. No amount of riches can really replace the damage from having your privacy taken away, your personal life and choices scrutinized and your emotional and mental sanity being tampered with and tested in the public sphere and in your career sphere. It's disheartened to see really talented women go through so much turmoil and strife in their lives just because it's their higher calling to sing, dance, act or entertain. I'm not a big fan of typecasting, because no one is just one thing--but women are especially not just one thing. Women are so individual and multifaceted and I think our world is particularly geared to suppress how vibrant, colorful, magnificent and fluid we are as people through these "crazy making" processes. So we end up having our personalities and spirits face lots of limitations, and becoming distorted and twisted in a negative way, and its very hard to make a turn around from that. True representation of women and girls everywhere would help females completely understand that they can be WHOEVER or WHATEVER they want, even someone or something totally original, that we've never seen before.

You’re awesome. Such a positive influence. I miss Amanda Bynes and lynsey lohan. I think they were both great entertainers. I always told my children to judge them only by they’re work. Their personal life is they’re business. To pray for them if you aren’t approving of their behavior. The young men have the same pressures. It’s terrible that people feel the need to know all about celebs. I only watch you to help support you. I really love what you’re doing. You’re so entertaining

It honestly does make me fear for these young women. To be in an industry where not only are they frequently the prey of gross older men who use their power for evil but also like you said they are pretty much set up to fail, it’s not hard to see why so many “go crazy” and have “breakdowns”. The media loves demonizing these young women. I hope Olivia Rodrigo has good agents who protect her!

This one hit me even as a guy. Mental health is at an all time high. I love movies and acting and I need money but hate the concept of fame for the power that it will have over you and being blind to certain things. I think Christy makes a great point on how you have to have the right people around you. Whoever Leo has around him he's kept the most iconic career of our Gene. It seems to be hard to.be a serious child actor then also want to continue that. Like MJ never having a childhood with the Jackson 5 or Dakota Fanning who I haven't seen in awhile although I do think she is great. Still hard to judge anyone as a child. It feels like too much exposure for anyone to manage. Marlon Brando hated the spotlight outside of the movie in interviews. I don't think I'd let my kid do acting on TV. Your story has brought a light to me about living in Hollywood and NYC.

Giving them grace has power. I agree. So many folks say things out loud about others (especially public figures) and never really feel like “oh they may hear this”, or “oh they may read this”. Dude! Everything you put out on the internet or into the public yourself can be read or heard by any person including celebs. We should say it knowing that there are some odds that the person on the other end could maybe be receiving it and/or may be affected by it. My brother was a guitarist in a Seattle band when grundge was huge. And thankfully taught me that Denny’s coffee and laughs was better than after shows. But that did not mean that I had not literally bumped into someone of importance to art during the day as a young adult. Or at a sound check when I was older. Seattle was huge for Movie making then as well and was invited to set as a teen cause Warner Brothers was using my moms work building. So seen work in action. Infrequently. Or as “talent” 😂 myself on a local music video set as a 20 something short chick … Let me assure you that every last one of those involved hears newsworthy content from time to time and that we as listeners and viewers have some amount of mental sway even incidentally at times. So let’s be aware and be mindful of our words. Words matter even when they are Twitter or Facebook. It has power too 😍 friends. Be well. 🙏

"Most child actors go through that. Unless you can transition into an adult star, your career is over." -Morgan Brittany Child actresses like Miley Cyrus start out pretty good in their acting career as young teens. But unless they have grown up or understand the basics of life, they turned out famous as an adults--in the worst way possible. They never take the time to question themselves about what's right or wrong and what consequences it will have on them. And they'll treat necessities of values and maturity wrongfully. They don't know nor see why they're doing it till it has a effect on them and their careers as actresses.

You can have these issues whether you are a celebrity, not a celebrity, child of a celebrity, etc., in short, anyone. The key is to find the right treatment and have supportive people near you when you need help. The problem with the media is that they often look for the most salacious detail. Many people have problems that are quite mundane but no less harmful. E.g. mental duress from simply not having enough money to put food on the table, etc.

It seems, to me, that the Disney Machine is so controlling, expecting their most prominent actors/actresses to be these perfect representatives of the brand, that when those actors/actresses get out from under the Disney umbrella they overcompensate for not being allowed to make mistakes during their childhoods/young adulthoods, and it just so happens they're the ones to have that behavior documented for the world to see. Meanwhile, even if the rest of us have documentation of our behavior, no one outside of our circle of family and friends is privy to that behavior. And then there are the actors who are the breadwinner for the family, who act out because as long as they're the ones bringing in the money, their parents can't really tell them to behave a certain way anymore.

I think one of the best things about mental health being more openly talked about now is that instead of reveling in people going off the rails, we can say "This person needs help." Whether there's an underlying condition there or not, and there not be any shame in it. And if you need an example of the double standard, think about Britney Spears breakdown compared to Charlie Sheen's. She ended up with a conservatorship and her career collapsed while he was able to PROFIT off of his. I was thinking "This poor guy is having some kind of mental health crisis" and everyone else just thought it was the greatest thing.

I never thought this topic would ever come up. I have noticed that among the original early 2000s actresses/singers, Dakota Fanning and Abigail Breslin have been the most successful. I do not know what the secret is but the cast of Friends have remained clean. I still like "A Thousand Miles". Avril Lavigne still has a strong following. There are a lot of actresses that have been in questionable films/tv shows that never get called out (like the cast of Orange is the New Black for example) but because they have enough popularity and have not been reported to have bad behavior (in their real lives)... they "get away with it" or pull off their brand/look better than their peers. Maybe it is also because they have remained physically attractive/ physically wholesome (who knows). Pirates of the Caribbean and Spiderman (2002) were both violent films. Why were violent entertainment allowed to survive and thrive (even after 9/11)? I think in the future, actresses must be at least 40 to be a part of Hollywood. I feel torn though... I have liked a lot of questionable movies and tv shows lol. I ended up enjoying nude yoga girl instagram and sexologist jaiya ma... As a southasian, I will always have a special place in my heart for Mindy Kaling even though I never identified with her. I think pbs kids was the best thing that continued on during the early 2000s (and beyond). As to why some actresses go crazy and why some do not. I do not know for sure. But I do think being apart of the Disney umbrella/brand puts extra pressure on people who under another brand would not be expected to behave demure. But then (have you noticed) the same exact people who complain about Disney cry when it is no longer there... They are often the ones who cry the most.

She still had a responsibility whether she wanted it or not. The good thing is that it seems her life is finally on a normal track now.

This was an incredibly interesting video. I think Demi Lovato is another one who fell prey to others setting them up to fail and the media somewhat reveling in their failure. Also, I found it very interesting to listen to your comments with Shia in mind - and I don’t mean that in a negative way, just that he’s someone who is portrayed as having ‘lost his mind’ (though obviously not a female, just someone who has acted out). Anyway, I’ve been watching your videos for a few months now but this is the first one where I felt compelled to comment. Thanks for the very thoughtful content!

I think a lot of it is from stress. Regular adults often turn to self-medication because of stressors and in Hollywood we have these kids who are WORKING real jobs, sometimes crazy hours despite labor laws, they’re held hostage under a magnifying glass for the sake of public scrutiny. Sometimes they get into showbiz to help their parents pay bills. It’s a lot for kids to deal with, then you throw in the regular stresses of adolescence. But I don’t like the narrative of every one of them “going off the rails” in the media. Some are having mental breaks and then there’s the ones like Miley who just do crazy things to force the public to stop associating them solely with a role they once had in their childhood so they can be an adult. A saying that comes to mind from Xena, “If you keep someone on a pedestal eventually they will fall and your expectations will fall with them.” I think it’s unfair to put pressure on kids to be role models for other peoples’ children and to expect them to continue doing that into their adulthood.
