However, when the postman called, I relised that not only did the guy on the phone get my adress wrong, he also got my last name wrong. I had to explain to the postman where I actually live. And when I got the contract there were 5 pages where my last name was misspelt. Worse part is, I couldn't call them up to fix it. No, I had fillout an online form with pictures of my ID to prove it.

Okay, here's why they're so paranoid about freezing accounts when your visa runs out. They're not concerned about you staying there, they're worried that you might leave without them knowing it. It works like this - If people are leaving the country for good, organised criminals will either pay for access to your bank account, or identity theft their way in. The person whose account is taken over has left the country, and doesn't need it any more, so they're not going to report any suspicious activity, so now the criminals have access to a "clean" bank account, decent credit and a history of transferring money abroad. They then ram as much money laundering and fraudulent transactions through the account as they can before they are spotted, then just rinse and repeat with another account. To make sure this doesn't happen, the bank slams the account shut as soon as it can when you're leaving, but if they're too quick off the mark and you're staying, you get caught with all that hassle.

Can’t imagine it often being an issue in any major city. And with the “do” at the end and the completely different syllable stress it’s clearly audibly distinct from Edward
@patheticmortal37311 ай бұрын
@fluidthought42 I wonder if it's a culture difference, but in the UK Edwardo, Pierre, Natalia, etc names are very commonly used for people, without resorting to an Angonym. A lot of our place names are French, Spanish, Greek, German, and even sometimes Hindi (and some others). In the UK we have many school exchanged with other European countries. At my secondary we had French, German and Chinese exchange students. Plus many immigrant students who obviously had their own names, so why would we make them change it? There was only one kids out of the hundreds who did change his name, but peple used his real name anyway. The USA tends to stay within itself, so my guess is that's why people aren't used to hearing other sounds in names

Saying your name if you have quite unordinary name really can be awkward. Especially if your name contains sounds that do not exists in Japanese and if it is quite long. Then you try to say Latinized version of your name and it becomes also problematic cause representative letters of the sounds of your name does not exist in Latin alphabet either and it is practically weird and butchered version of the name that sounds weird even to your language and English, let alone to Japanese. I'm Kazakh and my name is very Kazakh (not international name adapted to Kazakh, not Russified name, it is like native native Kazakh) and in order to Latinize it it went from "Kazakh => Russian(adapt Kazakh sounds to Russian to make it easier when Latinize) => English(Cyrillic to Latin)". So when I came to reception desk to take back my thing after the concert I needed to say my name so receptionist could gave me back my stuff. I first said in native pronunciation on autopilot then corrected myself in pronouncing that as it is written in my passport. The face of confusion that she made trying to understand my name made me to just describe what thing that I had in my broken Japanese + google translate. Good thing that I came after so many people and there was not so much things that could fit to the description of my stuff so she immediately found what I need on a second attempt. But then she asked my name anyway to verify it with the name written on the stuff's tag so I had that awkward moment again lol

@@AnnaMorimoto yeah ! Right on the spot with "ғ" sounding like "spitting up phlegm". I would even say that it more clearly appears when you are rinsing your throat with the water. It also appears a little bit in French pronunciation of Paris as you said. With "қ" sounding like they are grimacing... I'm not so sure to be honest. If I could describe the sound it could be like "run an old car on diesel fuel at -40 degree". Sounds of grunting and exhaust from a car pipe can get near in producing "қ" sound.

That justification of freezing accounts doesn't even make sense.. We freeze them because their names are the same as ones that are already frozen, which only explains opening of new accounts. Furthermore I guarantee there is 0% chance that someone named Connor Marc Colquhoun has previously committed bank fraud in Japan before. It would make more sense if they said something like, we want the money made in japan to stay in japan so if you're visa is expiring and you're leaving you're leaving the money you made here too.
