Quite right. The good thing about this bad virus situation is how many people are thinking we need to fundamentally change our system, since capitalism has proven to be so weak in a crisis. In the short term we can pay out billions to help people get through it, and we should. However, in the long run what we need is to stop using a capitalist system because inequality, concentration of power and taking control away from the majority of people is central to how it works. We need to organise ourselves according to a better system, BESS, as i call it (a better economic and social system) that works well for the majority of us. No matter what useful short term changes we make in pay and education and rights etc, they will all be whittled away again 50 years later or so, if we have a capitalist system (as we have seen since the 1980s, with right wing government taking away the rights won in 1911 and 1945 etc). We need a BESS, and we ARE capable of having one.

For people on low wages this is just another bad time. Now unemployed, on universal credit or with 20% reduced wages. Living in overcrowded housing and flats. Being shamed for going to the park. Uncertain if your job is still going to be there to go back to in 3 months time stressing about money... If you're well off it's not been so bad. Working from home in your home office, maybe reading a few novels, chilling in the big garden, baking cookies with your children, learning a new skill or hobby. The only inconvenience is the longer lines in the supermarkets and your ski holiday being postponed.

@EriolTolkien Abolishing slavery after making plenty of money transporting slaves and the goods that slave labour made? Trade routes established primarily through violence, not ingenuity. The UK is rich thanks to profits made on the back of slave labour, be careful not to forget it.
@cohabitant4 жыл бұрын
@EriolTolkien My point is that the introduction of the Abolition of Slavery Act does not absolve the UK of its role in slavery, particularly with reference to establishing the unfair economic conditions of today. Of course, the UK did not act alone, and arguably other European nations were more violent in their empire-building activities, with particular reference to Spain in South and Central America as you rightly mention. But now, as then, these global economic rules are largely established by the British Empire. Britian set these rules also within its own borders, and it worked - cheap UK labour of servants and factory work allowed the economic conditions for ruling classes to grow their wealth and be rewarded for doing just that. The feedstock for those factories was largely taken from out in its Empire, cotton for mills made on the back on slave labour in its new colonies in the US and Caribbean, tobacco for cigarette manufacture, sugar plantations for food. They could now sell these higher-value products back to their colonies, with tax on these products also going back to London. Cheaper clothes and food for the poor in the UK was a small benefit (at the sacrifice of millions of slaves globally). But let us not be so naive to think that this was the intended goal. With all due respect, Our Moral View is that so long as the money is flowing back to London, the UK is okay with it. This is still happening today as by the rules set and enforced of the World Bank and IMF. As you mention, other nations are responsible too, but I would argue that pointing this out does not make the UK blameless. Just to note, of course, the UK is not the only party to this, but as the biggest economy of that time, I believe has to shoulder the responsibility proportionally. Slavery still goes on today, but I think it is, at best, naive for the UK to wash its hands. Many of the products we use today we could not afford without slave labour. And whilst the UK has managed to hide its role by having slavery happen in other countries, we cannot be so oblivious that we no longer have any part in it.
@cohabitant4 жыл бұрын
@EriolTolkien So you believe it was a wholly moral decision for reason why Britain wanted rid of slavery? The US was a new country, independent from the UK and ready to take part in the global economy. How could the UK compete if the US could benefit from its slave labour, whereas the UK could not? Yes, some moral drivers helped push this world view, but the economy ultimately drives these decisions.

The economy should operate for the benefit of the native British People. When our ancestors built this country they did it for us, not for foreigners, and neither they nor us ever consented to give any of it away, or were even asked before it was given away.

benbow7 Are you also gonna consider the slaves and colonies who help build the nation alongside your ancestors?🤔
@benbow74 жыл бұрын
@@NnamdiNw The Mongols, Turks, Arabs and Bantu all employed far more slaves than the British for far longer and treated them far more cruelly which is why so few of their slaves' descendants are around today to whine at them, yet the homelands of these peoples are certainly did not become wealthy thereby. I could also point out for the thousandth time that whereas ALL human societies practised slavery the British and their colonies were the only ones that ever tried to abolish it, expending enormous blood and treasure in the process.
@pru6664 жыл бұрын
BenBow. You are the problem with society as it stands. You are cruel, unfeeling and dismissive. How can you speak in such a blasé manner about slavery? If one person rapes twenty people would it be okay for another to rape thirty? How can you be SO cold? People are fucking dying, and it’s affecting the poor and minority communities the most. Learn some compassion for god sake, you’ve been sold lies by an elite who don’t care about you, and who deem Kindness a weakness. It’s not. It’s how humanity survives.

I am sooo glad that we have the great unbiased BBC looking out for the poor and vulnerable and keeping them protected. Imagine if the BBC hadn't pushed so hard to get us locked down? We might have seen hospital beds selfishly taken up by cancer patients and elderly people instead of CV patients. We might even be in the same position as countries like Sweden or Japan, or even....God help us, Iceland (that basket case of a country that prosecuted bankers) instead of countries like Italy or Spain. So thank you BBC, I applaud you for your untiring efforts to keep us all safe in our boxes. This is for you 👏👏👏
