The mistake we make as fans is thinking that the UFC is a merit based competition, the majority of recognised sports in the US do not have a PPV model so it is just about the best playing the best, when you have a fight to sell it only makes sense to think about marketability so this should maybe be made more transparent instead of claiming guys have earned a title shot they havent and visa versa
@KhalifBeats Жыл бұрын
Sadly I agree with you. Makes complete sense. I wish it didn't have to be that way, but of course how are you gonna get people to watch the best of the best if they gotta pay their hard earned money for it? @@peeodee6755 i dont agree. Henry Cejudo is a perfect example. He lost to Demetrius, Demetrius never lost the belt, he then rematches with Cejudo and then loses. If someone earns their way back to the top of the line, i think they should get the match regardless if they have already lost to the current champion. also happened with GSP and Matt Hughes, Lyoto Machida and Shogun, and so on. fighters learn and grow and mma is the type of sport where someone can end the fight with a lucky shot even if they are outclassed or losing the fight. I have never been a fan of immediate rematches (unless the previous fight ended in controversy i.e. Petr Yan vs Aljo 1, Anderson Silva vs Weidman etc.) just my opinion though. im not a matchmaker and i dont run the ufc so it doesnt really matter what i think. and the UFC is first and foremost about the money. the Rankings will always take a back seat to the money fights/fighters.

Hot take: I understand the whole meritocracy part of the sport, but let's be real leon Edward's vs belal is a fight no one is asking for or cares to see it won't sell. It's just a layup for Edward's, I think most people would rather see an extremely fun build up with an intriguing match up(Colby). Rather than Belal and Edward's selling 100 ppvs and Belal getting destroyed again.
@cornball0072 Жыл бұрын
Edwards was getting mauled by Usman until he knocked him out. Even though Usman was controlling that fight, I think that KO over Usman is an indicator that you never truly know how a fight can play out. Imagine if Usman vs Edwards stopped at a no contest at say round 4, it’s possible people would just say that Edwards is not any near Usman’s level so in the end I think a rematch between belal and Edwards is fine. You’re right tho it doesn’t sell and that’s the main factor.

After watching the video it seems like Dana White Privilege is less about unjust privilege and more about marketing decision making, they might not earn their place by being the best at fighting - but isn't marketing and drawing fans a skill of its own deserving of reward. I don't like the way the MMA works either, but if that's the current state of MMA, then it's less about privilege and more about understanding and taking advantage of the system (which is closer to a skill than a privilege in my opinion).

Great job on the video! I just have one argument to make, Dana and the UFC don't make up the rankings. The "mma media" actually make up the rankings, Dana constantly references this in press conferences and says "it's up to them, since they make up the rankings". And yeah, definitely the "mma media" doing it are dropping the ball, the Colby case says it all. The fact that he's still ranked number 2 for this long, can't really blame Dana for giving him the shot. If he wasn't ranked so high it would be harder for the UFC to justify it, though admittedly they would still do it because of "Dana White Privilege", like you say.

Tapology has the closest thing to a worldwide rankings data base. Check the top 15 of each division and you will see how its practically the same as the UFCs in most divisions. Also in boxing you can pretty much pay a fine a fight whoever you want as long as promoters agree. I hate the boxing comparison as both systems are broken but different.

I truly think Leon should take the Colby fight. If he wins that would benefit him heavy
@darkclaw1462 Жыл бұрын
I’d rather fight a contender that’s worthy of the belt, rather than contender who’s sat out for a year and half and fought nobody ranked In the top 10. Leon was right to not accept the Colby fight, like he said “He hasn’t fought nobody”.
@Noobie2k7 Жыл бұрын
Colby is legit one of the least deserving challengers out there. He's not actually beat a single currently ranked WW, his last 3 wins were against Masvidal (who was never good), Woodley (who'd completely fallen off the planet by then) and Robbie Lawler (who even back in 2019 was way way past his best). He should have to fight against Benil, Burns or maybe even Rakhmanov before he gets another sniff at the title. Maybe even getting wins against atleast 2.

Great video but one big note, rankings are NOT done by the UFC.If you go to the UFC ranking page at the bottom, you'll see the list of media that votes on the rankings. Essentially, rankings don't matter.The UFC can match make whoever they want.

Belal gets hated on so much when he fights very similarly to Colby Covington. He's also a pretty chill guy who is a lot more charismatic than most think whenever he's not tryharding to be entertaining. I also can find enjoyment out of his fights because I practice wrestling and BJJ and he's an elite wrestler who could easily be a champ if he used his elite ground game to set up strikes, which is exactly how Khabib knocked down Conor in their fight.
@BlackWolf-el3gu Жыл бұрын
Belal is an unexciting fighter boring to watch and acts like he fights like Mike Tyson. And khabib closed his eyes looked at the ground and hoped for the best with that overhand.

UFCs rankings are messed up. They just need a rule that if you win a fight you take the other person's spot or move up 3 spots if you beat a ranked opponent so there is still incentive to fight someone lower ranked than you. Also the loser moves down 3 spots regardless of if it's a title fight or even if they are the champ. Also inactivity for over a certain amount of time should move fighters down the rankings and eventually removed. The lack of system is a problem Colby shouldn't be top 5 or even 10 and khamzat, Belal and Gilbert should be top 3.

UFC is like any other company, where the people who has the boss's favor get everything they want while other more deserving people just stay where they are. It has been the case every where I worked. Honestly I have recieved the boss's favor in a couple of situations, but still it is universal.
