immediate impact isnt what most teams are looking for. they are looking for future upside. 5 years from now, Dalton could end up being the same player he is now with limited to no growth and the odds of that are higher for someone like him due to his age. Thats the calculation front offices make. They would rather make higher risk decisions with higher potential reward in most cases. Now is Dalton being the same player 5 years from now bad, hypothetically? Not necessarily but it means hes not a franchise player and thats why he got passed on. You really think these front offices somehow didnt see the tape of Dalton in college? These arent dumb people. They just evaluated him as a role player with less future growth and upside. Which he is. He is literally a role player for the lakers. He isnt going to grow into some franchise elite player.

Yeah, such a dumb narrative, too. As someone who is really into following the draft & prospects, I’ll say that, yes, the very top (1-5 or so) was very weak, but there were more quality starter role players and bench rotation guys than the average draft as well. So regardless of how you grade a draft, the sports media talking heads who don’t follow prospect evaluation just missed all of that nuance.

Totally agree, and this is coming from someone who really dislikes the Lakers lol. Channels like AM Hoops are good for getting up news, but they’re terrible for any sort of analysis. He even laid out the facts accidentally that support the point that outliers with unique situations like Siakam & Joakim Noah are often exceptions to the rule! Surprised he didn’t make that connection, after going into how unique Knecht was as a small player who developed physically & grew at a very late age, then ended up riding the bench in a small D1 program, developing into his body as a big above average athlete later in college, and not even getting a chance to play at a serious program until year 5. Compare that to Chris Duarte who is relatively undersized, not that athletic, has been the same size for a while, and played all of his years at Oregon, a major D1 program. When you actually look at the context it just highlights how poorly researched these clickbait videos are. There’s barely any analysis above the most surface level stuff going on here.

The 16 teams that drafted before LA needed a player that's in their timeline. He's 23 and is near his ceiling. For reference, Ant is 23. It's very rare to have players like him become cornerstones like Jalen Brunson. The only other team that would have made sense to draft him were the sixers but McCain is a good pick too.

I think what really plays a factor alongside age is that the NBA takes a while to get used to for most rookies. Not just shooting but also number of games which often leads to injuries. More injuries delay rookies from learning from the NBA mins. With older player taking longer to get better, it just means getting injuries as a 24-25 year old is more punishing than for a 19-20 year old. Look at Duarte, he got ankle and foot injury after his hot start and hasn’t been the same since. Look at Jaquez Jr, he got some ankle injuries on him and his 2024-2025 season has regressed. Injuries are just more punishing to an older rookie than younger ones and injuries are to be expected.

The reason Duarte worked for the Pacers to start and then didn’t has very little to do with his age. He was doing his best Michael Porter Jr impersonation and it rubbed basically the entire team the wrong way. We were a bad team in 2022 but dude on multiple occasions before being put on IR with a “undisclosed toe injury@ caught the ball in a spot where he was absolutely wide open then dribbled to the spot he preferred and shot a then contested shot.

Makes sense, you can cut a young rookie some slack and wait for him to improve, but a guy in his mid 20s should start pulling his own weight. Old rookie must earn his spot fast or he is done. The problem is smaple size if you have 100 18 year olds theres enough varience to eliminate the really bad players. If theres only 8 guys then one to three bad players have a huge impact. Also you could assume that these get less time given to them as they are older and are assumed to be less valuable to their respective teams

The chances of Knecht having a better second season than his rookie year are low. He is at best Duncan Robinson, at worst Max Strus. Those are fine NBA players, but he's not saving the Lakers

At 23/24, most players have hit their ceiling and the problem is they did it against lower level players in the NCAA or other leagues that aren't the NBA. The younger guys who are still developing can do it against the highest level of competition and they are able to craft their game to match the NBA style game not the NCAA or lower level league style game. It's not like you see a lot of games in the NBA that end in 65 to 59 points scores like in the NCAA.

Its pretty clear why. Upside and growth trumps all other factors in the minds of most scouts and front offices. Its more optimal to bet big in the hopes of winning big long term, than play it safe and have a lower chance of winning big long term. Did these teams "miss"? We wont know until years from now. Dalton Knecht could end up being a bona fide bench rider long term due to limited upside. Or he could turn into an all star. But the chances of the latter are less likely for someone like him which is the calculation that was made by front offices and scouts.

As someone that works with advanced statistics for my medical thesis, i want to point out, that the data for 1st pick age vs. Performance is very likely skewed. It seems reasonable to assume, that the no1 picks that were drafted very young, were indeed exceptionally talented or gifted and thus were drafted early. The effect then gets stronger by the fact, that the better a young 1st pick talent is, the earlier he gets drafted. So its probably associated, but not kausal for success, its probably even the other way round (better developed players prob. Perform better, but since they get drafted as soon as they show talent, that usually only happens with people where the scouts are unsure…)
