Why Did China Equip Type 051C Destroyers with Russian S-300?

The Type 051C 'Luzhou class' is an air defence destroyer, equipped with Chinese and Russian technology. It is armed with the S-300 surface-to-air missile system, which during the Cold War can destroy any NATO combat aircrafts.
The destroyer make a strong contribution to fleet area air defence, although it is underwhelming in terms of anti-submarine and anti-surface capabilities. The Type 051C is an interim solution to PLAN air defence, while the more powerful Type 052C is being perfected.

Confirmed : According to Chinese source, this project is a plan B to hedge risk of the indigenous APAR on the 052C and vertical launching system which were both still in development phase. Besides, they desparately needed more capital ships with area air defense capability at that time. It is a fake revolver since the tubes does not turn but have each a independant cover.

Actually 051C has another usage: to keep a maintenence crew for steam engines, as they were required for conventional CVs which still use steam engines.

Not good at English,so just make my opinion brevity. 051c is an important testimonier of PLAN strategy changing,built for core of the green-water navy fleet.especially zone anti-aircraft bility.with coast corvettes assist,to protect the important coastal city.they still on this mission today in bohai inland sea(ocean entrance of beijing).to make more modernized ships did blue-water navy mission well.051c have different but both important duty in two period,entill shes retired,and the PLAN blue-water navy will go much developed in that times. English still hard for me,hope my writing not so much terrible lol

videos about 051c can hardly seen even on Chinese Websites. Thx for this video. too many new ships and too many new designs appear in PLAN, people always look at what is the newer one, but hardly think of how newer ones was developed and whats make the newer one like that.

Think China will eventually replace the S300 with the latest version of the naval HQ-9. If they do, they may as well replace the 8 YJ-83 with 8 YJ-12 like on the Shenzhen.

If they do that, it will proabably save a lot of space assuming the same number of missiles, especially towards the aft. This can make room for stern sonar winches or possibly a heli hangar.

China may even scrap them altogether and replace them with new 052D. Alternatively they reconfigure the 051C to be identical to the Shenzhen by fitting HQ-61 and freeing up space for ASW hanger, VDS and towed sonar array. The Shenzhen is essentially a big 054A frigate with serious ASCM punch (16 x YJ-12).

My own opinion is that the Type 51c is still fairly useful as air defence escorts, so probably can be kept for another 10 years or so. Btw that's a great way to describe the DDG Shenzhen.

It won't worth it. 48N6 is VTM while HQ-9 is active radar homing, switching to HQ-9 means replacing the main radar ( or even the whole radar system since Chinese radar for HQ-9 might not be compatible with other Rassian radars onboard). A more viable solution is to use some s400 tech to upgrade the S300FM system.

A bit correction. The system onboard 051C is S300FM instead of S300F. The missles are different ( 48N6YE v.s. 5V55RM), radars are different (30N6E1 Tomb Stone v.s. 3R41 Top Dome), and the guidance system are different (radio control command guidance v.s. TVM). Actually S300FM was never installed on Slava Class. It is used by 051c and Kirov only. So the 3R41 Top Dome radar and s300F system on a Slava Class shown in this video 1:24 is not the same system 051C uses.

While what you say is of course true, I don't think it is misleading to show the S-300F on the Slava. There is very little good and quality footage of the VLS on the 051C firing, so I got to make do. Many military channels use basically irrelevant or only tangetial footages. So I am comfortable with showing the Slava. I don't know how that sits with you, but you have my answer

The Type 051B is almost identical to the Type 051C, and the original HHQ-7 SR SAM system has been replaced by the medium range HHQ-16 VLS.

@@EurasiaNaval from what I've heard among the type 051 ships. Only the 164, 165, 166 have civilian air-conditioning installed. For type 53h1 don't have air-conditioning too. But later variant 53h1g and later have air-conditioning. For type 037, those of 037i and later have air-conditioning, earlier versions don't have. All type 062 don't have air-conditioning. Though most of them are getting decommissioned. Even those later ships that have air-conditioning are average home use air-conditioning I heard, as air-conditioning units wasn't in the hull design.

@@EurasiaNaval as for how hot at the sea, I heard it wasn't that bad once your in the ship with open window and the sea breeze blowing and ship is moving. The wind is pretty strong so it's not as hot as most people thought out to be. As long as your not standing directly under the sun for long hours. Infact most fishing boat today don't have air-conditioning.
