Thank you for that illuminating short explanation of why polygamy was tolerated by Yahweh but not promoted by Yahweh the true God. You are spot on when you refer to men of faith as in the Old Testament - but they were not necessarily men of morality - and that distinction is rarely spoken about openly. The gentleman in this video is very conniving with his words, he says the NT never upholds David as an example of morality.. which is misleading because the Bible itself actually does uphold David as an example of morality .. “because David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.” ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭15:5‬ ‭ 1 Kings 11:6 and 2 Chronicles 34:2 prove the same. But because these verses are in the OT and not the NT, the gentleman dismisses them and only focuses on NT verses on examples of morality. With all due respect to his knowledge, I think this was very very misleading of him.

Nowhere in the Bible does God condemns polygamy, not even remotely. It's even funny how the writer comments that God was not pleased with what David did with the husband of Bathsheba. Sounds like God got angry with David but couldn't do anything. You can only twist and turn the text, like someone already mentioned, to try and make it sound like it is prohibited but that is weak non-valid argument.

Multiple lovers, is not what God allows, for this would allow women to have more than one husband, but as we see in Romans 7:1-3, this is adultery! You cannot imagine having a wonderful husband who loves you and cherishes you, and also loves his other wife. This is because you assume that if he loves another woman, somehow he no longer loves you. That is a faulty assumption and resulted in the unnecessary breakup of several marriages.

@@lesliewinchester8225 God only intended one wife for SOME men, while for others, he intended no wife whatsoever, and still others, he intended them to have MORE than one wife. There is nothing in Gen 2:24 that states how many wives a man cna have. It only states that when he marries his first wife, he must leave his parents and be united with his wife. Jesus used this to explain that they are no longer two, but one flesh. Obviously, the man who has left his parents and become united to his wife, cannot leave his parents when he marries his second wife, whether his first wife is still living or not! So now you think you can diagnose my state of mind, as if you were a psychologist who has had a session with me. You are unhinged. You cannot even spell "you're" properly.

Read well please because he allows polygamy actually this video is not saying the truth. But when David took another man's wife God said " if you wanted another wife I would have given it to you". He didn't say you have enough wives u don't need any more. But I do agree God's plan was 1 wife. 23 Do you think that God changed this commandment about polygamy in the old testament which shows that God allowed polygamy :Exo 21:10 NHEB-YHWH If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, and her marital rights. Because he did with some commandments in the new testament. Here they are: Actually I believe that this was written in Chapter John, Jesus says he is changing some laws in the bible. And he mentioned because the people in the old testament were very evil he allowed them to do what they want and he says now it is different. One of the examples is God allowing divorce when a man gives certain amount of money to the woman who married her whether from fornication, rape, marriage ceremony. So, the God in the old Testament allowed divorce. Also, there were three ways that people got married in the old Testament. One was sex (becoming one flesh), second rape (google sex in marriage and divorce bible verses in the old testament), third was marriage ceremony. Anyone who committed any of them was considered married according to God's commandments in the old testament. In the new testament when God was speaking to the women (at the water) who was having sex with many men, God reveals that she is not married (highlight that God considered her not married it is not a word mentioned in the bible but the story concludes that) and she is sinning (fornication). (which is opposite from the old testament as I mentioned). So, As you see The Bible changed some of the commandment from the old testament to the new testament. Lastly, God himself says he came to finish (perfect) the testimony and fulfill the prophecies. (Perfecting his biblical book, changing some of his commandment as you see from what is mentioned above). There is nothing wrong with God changing his laws in Bible as he is fulfilling the law (which means making it perfect, and that means to perfect something you can change it. Which is what Jesus did). This is something most Christians miss.

You need to be more clear. What you mean to ask is, why isn’t 1 man, multiple wives a sin? Because it is a sin with 1 woman and multiple men. First. How you know it’s not a sin. 1 Timothy. Where it describes the expectations of pope and deacon. These are the men who must have no more than a single wife. If It was was a sin, That would be obvious. He wouldn’t have needed to say “he can’t be a murderer”. He went out of his way to say that because, for others, it wasn’t a sin. The why? Well. One can only guess God’s reasons, but I’ve found God to always have good reasons for what he says/demands. If I were to guess, with limited effort, I can already think of situations when polygamy might not only be allowed, it might be necessary. Say when half the men of child birthing age, if you can call it that, are dead from war.

Polygamy isn't sin. If it were, God would never have called prophets who were polygamists and allowed their priesthood authority to continue. This is how I look at it: God created us with the ability to procreate. Is the act of sex wrong in itself? Of course not. It's the boundaries that God has set for it. As long as it is within the bonds of marriage, that's acceptable. Once outside of it, it is no longer acceptable, and it's in violation of God's laws. God gave the law and institution of marriage, and he sets the rules and boundaries. If it were ever wrong in his eyes for a man to marry more than one woman, he would have made it to clear that it was immoral to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the men and prophets through the ages who did so.

Excellent point. Notice how that verse was left out? The reason that David had simultaneous wives at all is because G-d gave him so many, according to the verses. Then He told David He would have given him yet more. This speaker's opinions and personal preferences are one thing, but ignoring the verses in order to support them is disingenuous.

You're right. And it is not in Old Testament only. In Matthew 25 we can read the Parable of the Ten Virgins. And that describes the multiple marriage. In Jewish Torah there are rules concerning levirate marriage which often leads to polygyny. The truth is that the monogamy does not come from Jerusalem or Israel, but from Rome and Grece. The monogamy of the Roman Empire was the cause of two explanatory notes in the writings of Josephus describing how the polygamous marriages of Herod the Great were permitted under Jewish custom. Apostle Paul didn't treat women and man the same concerning the marriage, he wrote in Romans 7 "1 Or do you not know, brothers (for I am speaking to ones knowing the Law), that the Law lords-over the person for as much time as he lives? 2 For the married woman has been bound by the Law to the living husband; but if the husband dies, she has been released from the law of the husband. 3 So then, while the husband is living, she will be called an adulteress if she comes to a different husband. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress, having come to a different husband." Why didn't Paul say the same about husband? (if man and woman are equal in marriage)?! He gives as the example a wife as according to the Law (verse 1) a man can marry as many wifes in his life as he wants, but woman can have only one living husband. So apostle Paul saw marriage in a Jewish way which of course allowed the polygyny. Dictation of monogamy has pagan roots. Paul as prophet will write "1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will depart from the faith, paying-attention-to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons 2 by means of the hypocrisy of liars having been seared as to their own conscience- 3 forbidding to marry (...)" And it has began from forbidding the polygyny.

No and it's not a contradiction either. What did the jews in the Bible do? Moses wanted them to walk up the mountain and see God for themselves but they refused. They just wanted Moses to do it for them. They damned themselves to a lesser law. So the rules you're talking about are just administrative rules for living in their community in the lower state they chose for themselves. And you can see how it turned out for them. I dont condemn them myself as most Christians are now doing exactly as they did at that time. Lazy, won't know God, choose a lower and easier way.

yeah often things that God permits to happen are things in which people describe as God doing*. As Brodi mentioned above, these may be things that aren't ideal and sometimes serve to sculpt a person. Solomon may have been allowed (by God) to have these wives specifically to place him under the temptation of multiplying wives. Such temptations are allowed to test ones faith - this is heavily echoed in the new testament.

I once listened to a Muslim and a Christian have a light discussion back and forth. Both were trying to show why the other why their faith was incorrect. Finally, the Muslim says something aling the lines of: "You may be right...I may be wrong...but at least I do what my book says. Why dont Christians do what their book says? Why should anyone listen to a hypocrite? Even atheists know more about what the Bible says then most Christians! Your book says dont eat pork, and Christians eat pork. It says observe Passover, and Christians observe Easter. It says rest on Sabbath, and Christians font do it." Muslims know they can take 4 wives and multiply children. The Bible places no restrictions on believers. Christians can take multiple wives and multiply children, yet they listen to what their Pastor or denomination teaches, rather than what the Bible teaches. Its their fault for trusting in man, rather than trusting in God. One can say there is no need to keep Gods command to be fruitful and multiply...yet is the righteous on earth increasing...or decreasing? I see much sin and wickedness today. May so called believers be cursed until they wake up and repent...namely those teaching falsehood. _I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Read well please because he allows polygamy actually this video is not saying the truth. Do you think that God changed this commandment you about polygamy in the old testament which shows that God allowed polygamy :Exo 21:10 NHEB-YHWH If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, and her marital rights.

God speaks to this very thing in His law in Deuteronomy 21:15 and forbids a man from giving a double portion inheritance to his favored wife instead of to the actual firstborn son of an unfavored wife. Very unsatisfying answer to the question... 5:26 - OT saints "never held up as moral examples, but only as examples of faith"? Seems a false distinction to me. How exactly does a hero of faith (Heb 11) live an IMmoral life? That seems a false distinction between "faith" and "acts of faith", or between faith and obedience (morals, ethics), both of which the OT saints abound in and for which are held up as examples in the NT. Obedience is faith. The saints were faith heroes in Heb 11 because of what they DID. Better question than "Why did God allow" (which invites ambiguity) would be "Is polygamy sinful according to the Bible?" There's no law against it in either "Testament". Virtually every OT saint explicitly practiced it (and those that aren't explicitly shown to do so probably did so. As a rule, women are only mentioned in the Bible if they're relevant to the narrative. Thus there may have been more wives than are explicitly identified). God never condemned anyone for it. And God entered into covenant - it would appear - with a bunch of guys that were almost all, to a man, polygamists. If it was egregious to God (i.e. if God considered it adultery, a violation of the 7th commandment AND a capital offense), one has to wonder at his covenant making with Abraham, Jacob, David, not to mention his use of others (Gideon, Solomon). I personally think Moses had multiple wives. Zipporah was Midianite (of Abraham through Keturah; of the line of Shem). The wife he was accused of taking (by Miriam and Aaron) was Cushite (i.e. of Ham's line). That would make two wives at least (in addition to any not mentioned in the narrative). I would also speculate that the multiple different names for his father in law (Jethro, Reuel, Hobab) did not all refer to the same individual. Seems a hard argument to make (against polygamy). But for most Christians, one generally believes something is wrong if one personally think it's wrong, irrespective of what the Bible says about it. In this case, the evidence against polygamy is clearly lacking, but that doesn't keep most Christians from believing it's the equivalent of adultery.

I would also add, as a preemptive strike, that arguments in favor of polygamy do not constitute the next phase of sexual deviancy by a backsliding nation, as it frequently bemoaned by conservative press (e.g. polyamory). This cannot be equated to free, no strings attached, non-paternalistic sexual revolution. What we see in the Bible is paternalistic to the hilt, was geared toward nation/tribe building, involved childbearing as an imperative, and marital responsibility. This was not "I'm free to roam and hookup with whomever (or whatever) I want" as is the cultural bent today.

Interesting. Although, concerning his interpretation of Nathan's illustration for David, couldn't one also argue that there is no condemnation mentioned for having many wives? Additionally, in 2 Samuel 12:8, God seems to have blessed David with many wives by saying "I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah." It is evident in the Genesis narrative that God did not prescribe monogamy, but would you really say it is a sin?

Excellent point. And if those wives were, in fact, a "gift from God" doesn't that pretty much refute the argument that multiple wives were "allowed" but not "God's plan"? Would God gift a man something that He didn't believe was good for him? Again, I'm not arguing for polygamy (for many other reasons), but I find the biblical arguments extremely weak.

Lewis Seitz if it is a sin then David was having an ongoing sin. So is he in hell, the man after God’s own heart? And if he’s not in hell as a polygamist and the Bible never goes out of the way to condemn it then what are we doing here? I agree it’s a cultural no no. If you want to use Christ and the church as a symbol of monogamy then you will have to explain to me how the church is not made up of millions of individuals. It’s a better example of polygamy if you want to go there.

The Old Testament allows polygamy but doesn’t encourage it. Great men such as Abraham, Israel, Judah, Gideon, Samson, David, and Solomon had multiple wives, though the Old Testament records many problems that resulted. However, the law actually made it mandatory in one circumstance: if a married man died without leaving a male heir, his brother was required to marry his widow regardless of whether he already had a wife.

@@tyronegooch5251 well no, the bible condones indentured servitude which people wrongly call slavery, it's close, but not the same, you see the bible permits people to sell their children (their own property) for example to somebody for service, marriage, etc, and to be honest, people put their own morality on God and claim it's wrong to sell something you created that belongs to you. Unfortunately those same people either refuse to see, or genuinely haven't noticed, that it's LITERALLY the same thing Christ did for us, HE BOUGHT US, he PAID for us, as it says, we were ALL BOUGHT FOR A PRICE, and it wasn't gold or silver, but something MUCH more precious, the Holy blood of Jesus Christ the only begotten son of God almighty. That is why in my opinion paul always refers to himself as a slave for Christ, there were rules around how people were to treat their indentured servants well, very specific ones, and how servants were to serve well, how wonderful it is that our MASTER is the Father, Son, and Holy spirit, who bought and paid for us with the blood of Christ, how much more so are we than to serve well? and how much better shall we be treated by our faithful master? @Didier 619 Apologies for her. She assumed you were being a hypocrite obviously without knowing you first. Experience shows that people don’t usually do that unless there is a bit of self righteousness somewhere in their motives. This is an unfortunate thing for anyone trying to spread the good news. But I would just like to point out however that the person in the video actually did give an answer. God has many times told people that polygamy is a sin and has spoken against it many times as well. See Deuteronomy 17:17 for one example. But even though he commanded people not to do it they still disobeyed him. Even people who served him and were saved disobeyed him. But as with all sins God does allow them. Because it may surprise you that He uses all things to work together for His good even evil things. So yes God did allow it for a time. But mind you it was still a sin and all sins must and will be paid for. Fortunately for the people who trusted in him back then, and even now they didn’t have to pay for their sins themselves. Because God sent his son to die in our place so that His righteousness could be given to us and we wouldn’t have to pay an eternal price of death. And more importantly so we can spend forever with him in perfect happiness and love. The same is true for anyone who repents of their old ways, and asks Him to be Lord over their lives. I pray that you would see the truth and I tell you these things with good will and love. Peace be with you, and run to God. I promise it will be worth your while. He wants to love you. In other words I'm saying I don't know the answer to that particular verse to be honest. I'll say it one more time though I think he opened his big mouth I don't see Yahweh asking for that. The only time that that happened before was when Abraham took Isaac and you don't notice that God stopped him and he sent a ram that they didn't use for the sacrifice. People say polygyny is wrong because of jealousy and then they use the bible to back their feelings. If God detested polygyny He would've said so. When David sinned and killed Uriah, He didn't have to give up the woman he committed adultery with. In fact, they had a baby together and they called him solomon. God called out David's sin, and it was not polgyny, his sin was adultery and murder in the first degree. Solomon's sin was not polygyny, it was idolatry of false gods. Jacob didn't even want his second wife. He honored the commitment even though he was tricked, but that story really doesn't apply because Jacob only wanted Rachel in the first place. Lastly, how can a man have a perfect heart before God (1 kings 15) while living in sin, the sin being polygyny? It's not possible. God hates sin. He tells us what is sin. I find it a little odd that He seemingly glosses over this very pressing issue for modern Chrstians if it were truly a sin. But the reason it is such a problem for us, is because our counterparts and our culture doesn't approve. Looking to society hardly makes for a good moral compass. Look to God, and there is truth.

At those times, women couldn't own any property and men were in less numbers since they were the ones dying at wars. The very solution for many families was polygamy and concubinage. My heart tells me that polygamy is a way of the flesh which turns impossible the true spiritual intimacy that a husband and wife can have in a monogamist marriage. Polygamy happens more for economical and lustful reasons, therefore is not a thing of the Spirit. God allowed polygamy because at those times it saved many women from poverty, prostitution and slavery, because men were dying at war fields, but in the other hand He did not created wives for Adam also. He did create ONE woman to ONE man.

Adam and Eve had many, many children, and they did not need to go into polygamy. They fulfilled the purpose of multiply and spread. Then it was Lamech, from Cain's offspring, a murderer, that was the first to have many wives. Your words are just ornaments to hide your own impure thoughts, because your flesh wants to justify its own means in order to fulfill the lust of having different women, a dream of illusory power, instead of having a sacred and intimate marriage with one woman, as one flesh, as God did with Adam and Eve. Jesus parents were not polygamists, and God chose them. Besides, if men were meant to have many wives to fulfill procreation, God would've created many wives for Adam. Instead of following God's design, you follow something that a murderer started. The world is going to 8 billion people and polygamy is a minor culture. Monogamy is sacred, because only then you can become one flesh with a woman. A man can never truly have a sacred intimacy having many wives. If a man thinks he need more than one wife, he thinks he deserve more than he truly need.

The only slight issue i have with one thing he said was, this disreguards 2 samuel 12:8 kjv. God says he gavr him those wives and if he asked for more, god would have gave him more. I agree other parts of the bible express possible calamities of polygamy, but god does not give evil things to a man. And james 1:13 kvj he does no tempt anyone with evil. It seems more like how Jesus described being married vs being a eunuch, James 9:12. Obviously being eunuch is not part of gods original plan because a man is to cleave to a wife. Let me know your thoughts guys. I am curious of your responses.

Ther are several commentaries on the subject from biblehub(dot)com which state that the royal harem would have been inherited by David and thusly given to David along with the rest of the kingdom, regardless of whether or not David actually married them. This language in 2Sam12:8 would serve not to say that polygamy is morally acceptable, but that God has bestowed upon David all that he could possibly desire. David's sin becomes all the more egregious when David (notwithstanding the permission of royal polygamy given by the eastern cultures at large, and especially considering that an obedient king would not have engaged in polygamy) goes outside of his inheritance to take another man's wife. Basically, God is saying, "you had your pick of a harem and said no, but you instead took what was someone else's." As Benson's Commentary states: "The wives of a king went along with his lands and goods unto his successor, it being unlawful for the widow of a king to be wife to any but a king, as appears by the story of Adonijah. The expression in the text, however, does not necessarily signify that David married any of them; nor have we any proof that he did. Indeed, it is doubtful whether he could consistently with the law of God. See Leviticus 18:8; Leviticus 18:15. The meaning seems only to be, that God put them into David’s power, together with Saul’s house and other property."

@@Yohanyothan Marriage at that time was far more an economic or political union than anything to do with desire, love, or any other kind of attraction. Especially for wealthy or royal men. No courting involved. Many could legitimately argue that the direction to "cleave" to your wife has far more to do with providing security, food, clothing, housing, etc., than any emotional attachment and, if one has the means, can easily be done individually with multiple wives. Again, ancient Hebrew (and other) marriages of wealthy and royal men had so little to do with emotion and desire one could safely say those had nothing to do with it. FYI, I'm not a polygamy advocate for many reasons, but I do find most of the arguments against it based on biblical principles and examples extremely weak. For example, saying it's not good because of stories that it didn't end well is an argument that could also be applied to singular marriage. It often doesn't go well either.

@@pmgddm I'd lean more to the thought that it was cultural. There was no political or economic benefit to Moses have multiple wives, yet he did. Even if you go with the thought that in order to propagate the nation of Israel, polygamy was allowed, it seemed to be something that God allowed, though not his original purpose. Pre-Abraham biblical titans, Adam and Noah seemed to stick with the single wife principle but after that, it was game on, climaxing with the 700 wife/300 concubine insanity that was Solomon. If Abraham, Moses and David were polygamist, there's no justification for it to be a sin.

Read well please because he allows it actually this video is not saying the truth. Do you think that God changed this commandment you about polygamy in the old testament which shows that God allowed polygamy :Exo 21:10 NHEB-YHWH If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, and her marital rights.

How can you commit adultery (taking ANOTHER man's wife) when you've taken those unattached women for yourself? See the contradiction in modern American (20c) definition of adultery? THE bibilical definition of adultery is WIFE STEALING (taking another man's wife); if she doesn't belong to another man, she's free for you to take to wife. Ez 23 Yahweh takes 2 virgins to wife; after David commits adultery with Bathsheba & murders Uriah, she had no more husband, so what did God make David do? Did he not have to make things right by MARRYING HER after already having about 18 wives at the time? Does God hear sinners? Then why is it that right after it's recorded that David takes MORE wives that he asks God for direction at someone attacking him & Yah tells him to GO DO IT & his victory will be certain?! 1 Chron 14. When David DISOBEYED Yah, God made him SUFFER and REBUKED him did He not? Remember the Song of the Prophetess Deborah when they had a victory in battle "to every man a girl OR TWO"? Judges 5:30-31 - Was she blaspheming? Remember who rewrote the 10 Commandments..a man with more than one wife - MOSES himself had 1) Zipporah, a Midianite, descendant of Abraham: Exodus 2:15-16,21 and Exodus 18:1-6 & 2) An Ethiopian woman: Numbers 12:1(-15); Jewish tradition says he had many more concubines. Isaiah 4:1-2 about the glorious day of the Lord, how 7 women will take hold of 1 man; don't we hear how there are MANY women even today wanting to take hold of one man; my nephew has 2 wives.

If men are naturally polygamous than God shouldn't have made Eve only for Adam in that case. As Jesus said that there was only suppose to be one woman from the beginning and to put away their wives wasn't so but because of the hardness of their hearts that God let it pass. To me, any rich man can provide those things if they have enough money to afford them for their wife. Doesn't necessarily mean they love them from their heart. Im meaning affectionately. As King Solomon had over 700 wives. There is no way a man can be in love with all of them at once. Its lust of the heart and God views love differently. The Bible says you twain (meaning two) shall be one flesh, not you 200, 300 shall be one flesh In that case, love becomes a fairytale to me and only something us women can dream about. So I only get one person that has the attention of many women ...? I barely will get his time..tbats only if he calls me as he is King and you can't just enter into his bed chamber. This seems like..such a weight on us women. We grow up under our fathers and be owned all of our lives and we can't even have something of our own so precious ? Its depressing.
