2020 has been a strange year and will forever be linked with this KZbin channel. I never had the time or interest to put much effort into a channel until my school closed down because of the coronavirus in late February. Now with all of this spare time on my hands, I see the joys of sharing these videos I’ve been hiding for so long. This channel grew from nothing to this in just about 6 weeks and it’s all because of a strange series of events that happened this year. But I’m glad it connected you and I. -Anming

I feel the most challenged and accomplished when I am thrown into a new country and I must learn a new language to make it. That's where I thrive. This has led me on many solo travel epics over the year, but still it's hard for other people to understand. Like you said, people always assume you're moving for a love interest or because you're running from something. Normal people can't imagine thriving like this, but for some of us, it's our element.

Loved the "reverse editing" at the beginning! 👍 I think your Soul is intertwined with the Chinese & Japanese cultures & you're a true global citizen & good storyteller who's able to genuinely share your travel experiences. I can totally relate with you in your living abroad experience cos I myself had set a goal just before graduating from high school in S'pore. I wanted to see the world outside "The Little Red Dot" (nickname for tiny S'pore - that's what it looks like on the map) & not as a tourist. My goal was to "collect Life experiences" & to live long-term in several countries, so that I can better understand a country's culture & its people. I managed to stay in the US (8 years for undergrad, grad school & work), then back to S'pore a bit before plunging into my first non-English country, Thailand (without knowing anyone or the Thai language, taught in various capacities for 5 years). Went back to S'pore when Thailand was in the thick of the "Red Shirts-Yellow Shirts" protests & demonstrations. Then met my Japanese wife in S'pore & after we got married, decided to live in Osaka for 3 years before making a final move to S'pore after our son was born. IF... I was still single, I would have included the Gulf States (UAE/Bahrain/Oman/Qatar/etc.) for another sojourn, & maybe Central America (Costa Rica/Panama) as a retirement option. But after getting married & having a kid, it's not easy to make major Life decisions like relocating to a country cos it's not just about me but I have to consider how it affects the Life choices of 2-3 other people. I'm still holding the thought of a Central American retirement, if that's still a feasible option... we'll see... 😉

I have been waiting to tell this story for a long time. This is my favorite video so far. I can't summarize all 8 years in 11 minutes, but this video reveals a lot.

Haha i prefer you did in mini series form than 2 cram all in 30 minutes. Personally i bored my ass off if video is more than 15 minutes. Dont know if i too old with shorter span or its just the subject matter not interesting. Generally 15 minutes is a nice spot in interesting video. 16 even 19 minutes may or may not have sparks. Hahahaha.

Kyoto is beautiful, I was there for the cherry blossoms. It made me want to move but my wife is Chinese and she wants to move back. It is such a short hop I want to figure out how to enjoy both places. They are so different, I envy the fact you get to enjoy both.

Damn it’s amazing how you keep moving between countries and finding happiness. I used to be scared I’d never be stable enough, that I’d have to pick one place I’d want to be in forever. But university and coronavirus forced me to be more individual. And I feel like I could do a similar thing to you, move to one of those countries and if anything happens- keep traveling. Currently I’m studying Russian and Japanese at a polish university. I was also born in Germany so... so far I have quite a few possibilities haha. I wonder if I’d ever manage to learn Chinese like you did, seems like it’s easier to learn Japanese after knowing Chinese characters, but who knows! I gotta say I really admire you and your character- I’ll surely subscribe! Have a nice day... or night! Haha

Anming, I really enjoy watching your videos! I'm currently enrolled to start a TEFL certification course in Prague, as soon as the country's borders are opened up (may be near the end of summer...hopefully). I am currently taking Czech lessons via Skype and italki, to count as my 5th language (I speak English (native Texan), fairly fluent in Russian (was a Russian linguist in the USAF years ago), Spanish, and German). When I am able to go to school in Prague, I will be going through a visa process to actually stay and live in the Czech Republic. I am so excited about the prospect, but also a little scared about uprooting my life to come to a new country. Watching your videos help me ease some of my concerns and it gives me a sense that I will be doing the world (and myself) some good by teaching English to Czech & Russian speakers. I spent 2 weeks in the Czech Republic in late Feb- early March, right before the outbreak got bad in Europe. I loved the trip so much and actually got to speak a lot of Russian and Czech during my trip there and it got me excited about going back to live one day. I would love to learn Chinese and Japanese someday, but I got a lot to talked with Czech right now (its not an easy language, but the Russian language knowledge certainly helps with understanding some of the vocabulary and conjugation of verbs). PLEASE keep sharing your adventures and giving other Americans like me the courage to do the same as you and travel the world and help others....much love & respect to you!

5 languages! Wow, that's amazing. Remember that when you move abroad it's not all rainbows and butteries. The honeymoon phase wears off after 3-6 months and there might be some culture shock. Just keep fighting on and you will make it. It's really an inner battle.

@@OrientalPearl Thank you for your wisdom and I will take it to heart. PLEASE keep doing these videos, because it gives me the courage to begin my own language adventure abroad. I've never lived outside the US, but I'm really excited about eh prospect. I really want to make a difference in people's lives, by teaching them English and also conversing in their won languages of Czech & Russian (I doubt I will speak much Spanish at all there, but German may be a possibility too, since it is geographically close to the Czech Republic). I would love to learn Chinese & Japanese someday and you, Xiaomanyc, ikenna, 口语老炮儿马思瑞Chris, and Laoshu50500 all give me the incentive and passion to want to learn these languages even more! Please check out the other You Tubers who are so skilled with Chinese & Japanese- I think you will enjoy their content as well! Domo Agigato & 谢谢!!

I totally understand the desire for adventure. I am the same way. I discovered several years ago that my purpose in life is to learn about the world and the universe. I turned 33 today and I recently retired. Once Covid-19 dies down, I plan to start traveling the world again. For me, nothing is more exciting or important then learning about our world and our universe. I seriously doubt that I will know everything about the universe but I will attempt to learn as much as I can and enjoy the process. People like us are the brave ones: traveling to another country that is different from yours, all in the pursuit of adventure and knowledge. I cannot imagine doing anything else, I will do this until the day I die. I hope you continue to travel and learn about the world and universe for the rest of your life. Enjoy the ride!

I know EXACTLY how you feel...about having a strange life and connecting. I have lived in Japan, Korea, China and speak all of the languages. I often seek out these different groups in different countries, it is quite interesting actually and sometimes I forget what country I am in or language I am speaking, I have to remind myself. For example in Hanoi there is a Japanese neighborhood, Chinese stores in Korea, or Chinese speakers in Malaysia. Quit a trip for sure, thanks for the inspiration. peace from Macau.
