Why did Satan quote Psalm 91 to Jesus?

If you read your whole Old Testament, you never see a demon being cast out of anyone. Ever. How in the world when Jesus shows up and he starts doing that, people automatically think: "Well, this is what the Messiah is supposed to do! This is a sign of Messiahship." Where does that come from? It comes from messianic expectations attested in exorcists psalms during the Second Temple Period, and Psalm 91 was viewed as one of those psalms, which makes it really fascinating that that is the Pslam that Satan quotes to Jesus during the temptation in the desert, Check it out!

Jesus Christ saw the opposition be kicked out of heaven. He was not fishing for information. He was trying to have Jesus Christ disobey God’s hierarchy in listening to the serpent over yielding obedience to God’s order and God’s law. This was a good, informative video up until about 5:35. Actually, Satan knew why Jesus came, who he was, etc. He did NOT quote Psalm 91 correctly, but left out the part about "keep you in all your ways". He tested Jesus' pride in his own ability, because Jesus certainly could have shown Satan how powerful he was if he felt like it. But instead of leaving his Father's will, Jesus just meekly told Satan not to test the Lord. . God's messenger, Ellen White, has made this abundantly clear in her writings. I highly recommend you read her 1858 edition of "The Great Controversy Between Christ and His Angels, and Satan and His Angels". . God bless your studies.

Summary: Satan quotes Psalm 91 bc he’s fishing for information. If Jesus does throw himself off and the angles save him, then Satan concludes the Messiah cannot die and he will remove killing him as an option, but that’s exactly what needs to happen. So Jesus not only doesn’t fall for the temptations but also disallows the enemy from learning anything about the real plan. Masterful.

The devil misquoted Psalm 91 by omitting "in all thy ways" and adding "lest at any time". This changes the meaning of the scripture. Just as Christ was tempted so shall we be. This is the lesson we must learn that the devil is a scripture lawyer and he will twist the words ever so subtly in order to change the meaning. Study God's Word so you can't be had.

There was a battle of wits going on. What they were saying was, "ah, but YOU said..." Compare the Spirit of the LORD with Samson in Judges with the Spirit of the Lord with Jesus in Luke 4 and you can bet that if Jesus had met Samson during his earthly ministry, he would have cast the devils out of him ON THE SPOT.

Yea, Michael Heiser blocks me, but from my view, it looks like the comment is still there. The God of the old testament was the devil, and he can't or won't see it. Like when Jesus said that the bread of heaven in Exodus was not the true bread from heaven. He called Psalm 105:40 a lie in John 6:31-33. But it's true. Jesus was not fooled by the devil like Moses was. The covenant with death.

For whatever the Father does, the Son also does these things in the same way.” (John 5:19) The Father is the same God that is all throughout the Old Testament, and Jesus is perfect reflection of Him; if you call the Father cursed you are also calling Jesus cursed, and we know that the Holy Spirit never says that: “Therefore I am informing you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, ‘Jesus is cursed’” (1 Corinthians 12:3) Or what about when the author of Hebrews claims that Moses believed in Christ? “For he considered the reproach because of the Messiah (Christ in KJV) to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, since his attention was on the reward.” (Hebrews 11:26) this same author of God's authoritative word called Samson a hero of the faith as well: Hebrews 11:32. 1 Corinthians 10:3-4 says about the Israelites of the Old Testament that, “They all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ.” they had salvation and theirs was no different from ours. From the very beginning of time Jesus Christ was Lord and Savior, He is now, and He will be forever; Jesus is not just the God and Savior of the New Testament, but even to those in the times of the Old Testament as well. Zechariah 12:8 says, “the house of David will be like God, like the Angel of the Lord, before them” and who could it be talking about other than Jesus, who came from the house of David by human decent, but IS God? And this isn't talking about a God who nobody knew; it's talking about the same God who is seen all throughout the Old Testament. We also know that, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8) and about the Father something similar is said, “I will be the same until your old age, and I will bear you up when you are gray. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will bear and save you” (Isaiah 46:4) So if neither one changes, then Jesus had to have been the same from the very beginning of time, learning through every action the Father performed in the Old Testament, and the Father must be the same today as He was in the very beginning. It is also impossible to have the Father without the Son, and vice versa. “No one who denies the Son has the Father; he who confesses the Son has the Father as well.” (1 John 2:23) “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30) Jesus testifies to this and, “Anyone who does not remain in Christ's teaching but goes beyond it, does not have God. The one who remains in that teaching, this one has both the Father and the Son.” (2 John 9) You may as well be saying that Jesus works by the power of Satan when you call the Father Satan.

Nonsense. Satan is no fool. He tried to get Jesus killed many times by stirring up the Jews to stone Him with stones. They knew if He could live to gain the cross all was lost. They knew it without exposition on Psalms 91 with Jesus in the desert. The Jewish people after the exodus put at the doorpost on the inside of the house the list of blessings and cursings because they desired their household to remember how to behave in public to gain the blessing and not incure the curse. So you want you loved one to live or die? I am assuming you want the loved one to make it back. it's a lot of stress. You want angels to protect your loved one but ironically you have no issues with jesus being beaten, tortured and paraded like Cersi in Game of Thrones and then killed?? The prophecy says angels will protect the prophet so much so that he will not even hit his foot on a rock. Just like you want angels to protect your loved one. Yet you , ironically believe, Jesus was beaten , bloodied and brutally murdered. if the prophecy is true and you want angels to protect your loved one, you want this prophecy to be true. Jesus was never killed and only Islam says he was not. Jews are happy they killed him. Christians are happy he died. Islam , however, is the Abrahamic religion that says Jews did not kill and Jesus was protected by Angels and therefore the prophecy was true. Maybe being sent to the Middle East was a blessing in disguise because it will show you what the prophecy actually meant and how you want it to apply to those you love.

I recommend that you go back to Deuteronomy 6-8 and Exodus 15-16. Jesus was quoting Moses/ Deuteronomy during the temptations. The not testing part goes even deeper.

Michael I am in psalms and this is an exceptionally apt video thanks. Since being aware of the Dead Sea scroll elements it confirms a definite train of thought the messiah kept his power and purpose from the tempter for specific reasons and also provides us with not only a picture of the cunning involved but of the patient and ultimately wise rejection and foreknowledge before the ministry began.

while i was in iraq, i was constantly given (by mail, to any soldier) these cards with Psalms 91 on them and i would not carry them. i wrote the people back, thanking them for caring, and told them that for me to carry that card was by faith to me, very wrong. I serve the LORD and he protects me not by carrying a bit of paper with some bible verses, rather by the mighty power of his Holy Spirit that i might accomplish for the LORD, His work. i got back very good responses, and it opened a real dialog into walking by faith, trusting in the LORD, and not in the witchcraft of a bit of paper to protect me. (although i never used that verbiage except to a woman i care about, who loves the LORD as I. this presentation was very eye opening and i'm grateful you posted it.

Jesus didn’t appease demons through song, he cast them out with his word(Matt. 8:16). Jesus had all authority and Dominion as the son of Man, and he never referred to himself as the son of David. Read Matt. 22:42-46. He answered to it once in scripture, when the blind man called to him to have mercy on him, but later, said of the Christ what is recorded in mark12:35-37, Luke 20:41-44. Dr. Heisers discourse is very interesting, because according to Jesus, the sons of the Pharisees cast out devils.(Matt.12:27). So it’s very likely they used these exorcism psalms that heiser is talking about. Very interesting.

Old Testament folks who sinned were cast out or put to death, because if they sinned, they would catch a demon in them, be possessed and there would be NO WAY to deliver him or her as Jesus hadn't come yet for His power. A small population of Jews couldn't afford to catch the virus! 1 catches it, and the line of Jesus would have been in danger!

I am part of a deliverance ministry and this fascinated me for a different reason. The 'gods' of the Canaanites are demons we regularly encounter. Destruction is very common (along with death and destroyer) and so is night terrors (the terror that comes by night). I'm sure some of the others he mentions, if he gave their english meaning, would be the same. Interesting information.

How about "Ruin" and "Erosion?" Those are the names one brother. In a mental hospital gave me when I asked if he was haunted by spirits. He said yes and I asked what we're they're names. It bothers me to this day. I should have cast them out by the suthority of the name. He was a schizophrenic brother in Christ. He believed the best his brain allowed him to believe.

That was definitely the good news, the gospel! How do I go about getting an authorized KJV Bible? How much do they cost, and is it difficult to find one. I am already reading a KJV Bible but I am not sure if it is what you are talking about. My son purchased a KJV, giant print Bible from Walmart and gifted me with it and a beautiful bouquet of flowers 💐 for Mother’s Day. I have been saved since I was 17 and am still somewhat a babe in Christ because I didn’t take Bible reading seriously and certainly wasn’t discipled. I kept running from legalistic churches and have never really fit in with the “beautiful shiny “ church going women. I have wasted so much of my life stuck in the mud. You can easily read the entire book of Psalms every month: Read the Psalm for the day of the month, then add intervals of 30. So, day 1 you read 1, 31, 61, 91, and 121. I've been doing this for some time and it has been a real blessing!

I also take away from this is that Jesus responded to Satan's temptations and reasoning by quoting Scripture, part of the message here is we should do the same. When Satan comes calling, instead of simply yelling "No! Leave me alone! Get out of here! I'm not listening to you!" or cussing at him, we should resist him and hit back with Scripture.

Here’s an elementary thought. The temptation of Adam & Eve and the temptation of Jesus are the same. Adam and Eve Eats fruit; Satan tells Jesus to make bread to eat, Adam and Eve Wanted to be like God; Satan offers Jesus all the kingdoms, Satan tells Adam and Eve you won’t die; Satan tells Jesus to throw himself over an embankment “you won’t die”. This showed that Jesus resisted what Adam and Eve did not. I’m guessing that the temptation had to be similar to be a fair comparison.

Moreover, if the demons referenced in Mathew 8:29 knew who Jesus was and their own fate, it would make sense that Satan knew who Jesus was as well. I agree it was to tempt Jesus. One of the greatest gifts given to both Angels and Man was “choice.” God wants us to love him and obey him of our own choice. Tempting Jesus with food is similar to the temptation of the fruit of knowledge. Both are bad choices of our own will, not the will of the father.

Right on! Since Genesis 1:26, when God decided to make man in His image- that sent satan round the bend! He had always wanted to be like God Isaiah 14:14, and now a mere man, made out of clay, had the privilege of having God on the inside of Him, Genesis 2:7, John 20:22, making him like God! So, he began to scheme to show God that he was more worthy and God had made a mistake! Who is like God! That was the name God gave the angel He sent to fight against satan and the third of the angels Revelation 12:7, at their mutiny to get God out of heavenly mount Zion- Michael, and he had to call that name numerous times during the battle, which made him smaller and less powerful, until they were cast down to earth and broke all their precious coverings that made them proud Isaiah 14:13 Ezekiel28:13-17 (Now the precious stones adorn the breastplate of the high priest! Genesis 3:15, man and satan were each given a seed, and the seed of the serpent will bruise the heel of the seed of the woman, and the seed of the woman will crush the head of the seed of the serpent. Thus, satan began to look for ways to thwart God's plan of having man at His side, so he found ways to steal, kill and destroy! He began to mix the genes of seed of man with his seed and of other creatures Genesis 6. He'd rather spoil the seed if man than have man be redeemed and restored to fellowship, which spells his doom- the crushing of the head of his seed! So, he began to influence man's decision from then on. Abraham had Ishmael outside of God's will Genesis 15.He thought God would reject Abraham, but God only disciplined him with the sign of circumcision Genesis 16, as a deterrent for Abraham not to think of messing up again before the seed if promise is born, and renewed His covenant in Genesis 17. Since then, satan began to include his own seed to confuse God into blessing it, for if God does destroy it, man wouldn't know which seed was which, so satan followed the first born blessing route. He added Esau with Jacob, and God declared He hated Esau, and loved Jacob, Obadiah, for clarification. Satan messed with Joseph, who was the firstborn of Jacob from his favorite wife, Rachel, and influenced her to steal her father's idols, which would have been a snare, had she succeeded in getting to Bethel with the family, she would have set it up and it would have become a confusion when serving the God of their Fathers, so she was permitted to die, and prophesied about the coming Seed, who would be a suffering Messiah- Benoni, but Jacob changed it to Benjamin, the Son of God's right hand, or the anointed One! God chose Judah, by grace 1 Chronicles 5:1-2, and satan began to mess with him through his sons. They didn't want to have children, and God dealt with them, and eventually Tamar had a seed with Judah Pharez, but satan added his own- Zerah. It went on till Moses, when satan put it in Pharaoh to kill all children at the age he believed the Seed would be at that time. He put his seed in Absalom, who was described as perfect as him 2 Samuel 18:, and he succeeded in getting David out of his throne on earthly Mount Zion, which was a replica of heavenly Mount Zion, until he was killed, by hanging on a tree, accursed, with 3 javelins struck his heart,12 Samuel 18:9-17, his source of pride 2 Samuel 14:25-26; Ezekiel 28:17, and instead of the sides of the North, he was cast down and buried on the sides of the pit as prophesied 2 Samuel 18:17; Isaiah 14:15; Luke 10:18-19. He did the same when Jesus was born, made Herod to kill all babies around His age. Now, he sees Jesus baptized, heaven opens and everyone hears the voice of God, validating, confirming Him as His Only Begotten Son , that they must hear! Matthew 3:17. This led to his tempting Jesus. 1) to know if He was indeed the long sought promised Seed. 2) if He was, he wanted Him to make a mistake in His response that would destroy God's plan of salvation of and eventual redemption and restoration of man, through Jesus Christ, the Messiah. 3) if He wasn't the Messiah, he would be able to tempt him as others, and lead him to his death- as He would have wanted to prove Himself to satan, and to men, by His own efforts and wisdom. Thus, satan God people especially, the rich young ruler and Judas, and others, to persecute, during His ministry and on the cross Matt. 27:43.Him such that He wouldn't be able to complete the task He was given by His Father, for the redemption of fallen mankind! Satan only confirmed He was the Messiah after His death on the cross, and by then, it was too late. Matt. 27:54 He is now finishing what he began at this time, against all who would believe on the Son of God, as heirs and joint heirs of salvation with Him! Now, only a remnant remains from the original See of Promise, 144,000 Jews, from Abraham Isaac and Jacob, and the Body of Christ- very few members, as He is the Head, and a multitude that will be saved by their refusal to worship the beast and pay with their lives- from the seeds of Hagar, and Keturah Genesis 15, 25, who already came to affirm their pledge to Him as the way back into their father's inheritance, through Whom they also have access to God the Father. Genesis 25:; Matthew 2, the Kings from the East, with whom God had no relationship before the advent of the Messiah! Ephesians 2:12. Man will go back to Eden, there will be a second opportunity and man will prevail Isaiah 65, and the earth will be renewed, the olddestroyerd, Joel 2, 2 Peter 3, in the battle of armageddon. Then, a new heaven and earth created Revelation 21. The Heavenly mount Zion will now be in the midst of man and the Lamb, the Light of it Revelation 21. In light of this fact that there were two seeds at the beginning, and one is the promised Seed, we all have been given the opportunity to choose, if we want to be on His side, or on the other side, there's no sitting on the fence: God has also made it easy to get our naturalization papers and be adopted into sonship with Jesus Christ, if we so desire John 1:12-14, by grace through faith in the gospel of the salvation of our souls, by the sacrificial death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and he will return to take them all up and out of this world, and present them blameless, with exceeding joy before the throne of His Father, our heavenly Father. Otherwise, we will only be looking forward to the tribulation. No one has to be part of it. Whatever in this world that may make us miss heaven, it never worth it. Hebrews chapters 6 and 10.

incredible insight, thank you for sharing what the Holy Spirit has revealed to you. We need as much truth and discernment as possible these days. I also find it fascinating he chose the cross made from a tree, to redeem his creation that fell at a tree. We fell at a garden, he was arrested at a garden, and there was a garden right outside the tomb. Also, the world governments are forbidden by God which is why he destroyed the tower of Babel, then he destroyed Rome with the Cross, and he will destroy the one being formed right now with his return. Our God is so good. Praise Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. We are to rejoice in him no matter how dark things get because the light will always overcome the darkness.

@@magdalenem4949 Amen! He also dealt with the fig tree that had nothing but leaves to clothe Adam and Eve, so he cursed it and judged it. He will complete the 1 day curse at the millennium, when we get to Genesis 5 cycle, and Isaiah 65. We are entering Genesis 6 cycle at this time. He first ministered to all Israel, including the tribes of Gad and 1/2 tribe of Manasseh. He included the Samaritans, by grace, once He kne that the children would reject Him John 1:11-12, 12:32, who were primarily Assyrians brought to replace the Jews as they went into captivity by Senacherib. He only ministered to those Jews, who had faith in His as the Son of David, or the Son of the Living God. Because of God's covenant with Abraham, He would identify those that came to Him as "Son or Daughter". Those were the only ones He could minister to and not be penalized. He gave access to the Roman Centurion, the Canaanite woman and the Samaritan woman as a type of first fruits of gentile believers, who came to Him, by Faith! He is coming back to ONLY those who would wait for His appearing by FAITH, not whether they deserved it or not. Without faith, we cannot please God! Be encouraged brethren.

I see good evidence for your interpretation Dr. Heiser. I had a different interpretation on Jesus's response about not tempting the Lord. A Muslim actually helped me think about this. My understanding about not tempting the Lord was that Jesus wasn't going to abuse his status. Knowing He is the Messiah and will not die before the Crucifixion, He wasn't gonna use that as a license to arbitrarily put Himself in harm's way.

Maybe Jesus was referring to the 70 disciples He sent into the country in the previous chapter Luke 10 who came back rejoicing that the demons were subject to them.. I don’t believe the Jews were casting out demons before the Messiah came on the scene, at least the Bible would have mentioned at least an event where it happened but it didn’t..
