In the aftermath of World War II, tensions escalated between former allies the United States and the Soviet Union over their competing ideologies. While the Soviet Union promoted communism-a system in which government officials controlled the economy and many other parts of life-the United States generally espoused democracy and capitalism. Their competition for global influence came to be known as the Cold War because, despite some close calls and several proxy conflicts, hostilities between the United States and Soviet Union never heated up into direct confrontation. This video examines the major reasons the conflict remained “cold” and its consequences for the current global order.
