Hi everyone thanks for checking out the video and for taking a look at Baldrs Draumar! Let them know I sent you with a cheeky comment ;) Just a few points of clarification; Baldrs Draumar are very historically conscious and are aware that just as I mentioned in the video the legendary events of the Frisians in Rome are just that, legendary, so please don't pass them over or berate them about this. Take it as making an album about Beowulf - he probably never fought Grendel, his mam or the dragon, but it's still a great story and worthy of being put into song. I've attached their disclaimer with regards to this just below the links. Another quick point is that I managed to mix up where Baldrs Draumar will be playing. This Saturday they will be playing the Neushoorn which is in Ljouwert (Leeuwarden) not Dokkum as I said, though I will be present on the 21st of December in Dokkum where they will be playing at the Lantaarn. Hope to see you there! If you like the music or would like to know more about the band please feel free to follow the links below: Baldrs Draumar Facebook: facebook.com/baldrsdraumarofficial/ Baldrs Draumar KZbin: kzbin.info Baldrs Draumar Website: www.baldrsdraumar.com/ Album Historiography Disclaimer: The story as we wrote it is a mere legend and probably didn’t take place in the 9th century. There is however a clear reason why and how the myth originated. At the end of the 8th century the Frisians are conquered by the Franks. After the death of the Frisian king Rêdbâd the Franks finally manage to add Fryslân to their empire. The true amount of political influence they have in these northern lands remains doubtful however. First, Fryslân is a stretched out coastal area consisting of tidal marshes, creeks and other obstacles making it hard to centralize. Second, the Viking age begins. In the 8th and 9th century the Frisian territory is raided and invaded now and again making it hard and also undesirable for the Franks to hold a firm grip on the region. It is a period of uncertainty but also of new connections, alliances and trade. Stories are known of Viking chieftains leasing Frisian domains and of Frisians joining their Scandinavian kin on Viking expeditions. In conclusion, although we were nominally part of the Frankish empire , their true influence was questionable. Most Frisians remain predominantly autonomous and heathen. Halfway the 10th century, when the Viking threat has abated, the bishop of Utrecht creates a tightly knit network of parishes in Fryslân. The Catholic church is after power and influence and churches arise everywhere as a result of cooperating with local lords. This is probably the time that the Frisians start recording their so called Kerren (Statutes) on which the medieval Frisian Freedom is based. It is also during this period that the myth as we describe it in our songs and in this book originates. The Frisians need a good reason not to serve under local lords and not to pay extensive taxes to the church and so, with the Frankish annexation and with the Viking age cutting the direct lines to Rêdbâd as liberator, they come up with the story of Charlemagne granting them ‘freedom’ in return for taking the city of Rome for him. And so, Magnus is born.

The Saga is a mixture of 2 historical stories. 1: The Frisian freedom was given/acknowledged by the Holy Roman Emperor "Willem II" (William II) as thanks for helping with the occupation of the city Aken. 2: The battle of Rome was just Frisian settlers defending Rome from the Saracin people, because of this there is now a church in Rome named after the Frisian settlers called "de Friezenkerk" (church of the Frisians).

Could you do a video on how the material cultural of the Frisians differed (if it did) from their north-sea neighbors? What was their national dress? Did they have have Frisian specific hair and beard styles as their neighbors had their own? Did they specialize with certain weapons or tactics? What made a Frisian a Frisian in the dark ages? (besides language) I’ve found these things to be largely inaccessible, at least in English. Thanks!

BLUE DOG Wow, a beautiful accomplishment indeed. I was thinking they would be a much later breed but it seems there exists evidence for them as far back as the 4th century. Thanks!

@BLUE DOG YES, I mentioned this, too. The beautiful, noble steeds of Frisia! Totally black with long mane and tail, feathered limbs, with a very smooth gait, a joy to ride these powerful horses. I used to have a Haflinger from Austria, he was very 'smooth' too, having descended from the blonde version of the Frisien horse, this time, in Austria. My stallion was very energetic and at horse shows, thought I brought him there to fight the other stallions. He used to chase BEARS, too, on my farm. And woe betide any dog straying into his pasture!

I do hope its successful though. I might go for that comic.

This is typical heavy metal mush. All the 'songs' sound nearly the same, there is no melody, just crashing racket. BTW, I played the cello for many years. You realize, people back in the year 900 AD played the HARP and sang melodically including the Frisien people? The music (sic) here is very modern nihilist racket.

The place Groningen is called in Frisian Grins, meaning boarder. The place was originaly part of Drenthe, placed at the very end of the Hondsrug (higher waterfree part of the land. The Ommelanden (other part of the province Groningen) was frisian. Often flodded by storm and mainly farmland (kettle). Drenthe was higher land and more sandy, producing corn. So the city Groningen became the marketplace for trading and stacking goods. Because wars between Groningen and their loanheir (Bisschop of Utrecht), the city excluded themself and became a very important part of northern. By later wars (Schieringers and vetkopers)they devided themselves from the rest of the frisian parts.

A wierd side effect of the frisian freedom is that in the mid 1800's, one of the factors that made the Slesvig-Holsten question so convoluted, was what is knownas the royal exclaves. This is land that was geographically in the dutchy of Slesvig, butunder directroyal rule. These areas were the remnants of a semiindependent north frisia from medieval times.

@@historywithhilbert - I've often thought that it would make a compelling movie to intersperse the three story lines surrounding the book: 1) The contemporary story about the "discovery" of the book and the academic debate about its authenticity, 2) the implied story about who supposedly wrote the various parts of the book and their attempts to preserve their copies from being destroyed by agents of the church, and 3) the story contained in the book itself. I imagine something similar to "The Da Vinci Code."

While I don't know the validity of this saga. The Frisians were the greatest Germanic tribe in history. They were the genesis tribe of the Saxons, Franks, and many of the later Vikings after Charlemagne's conquest of their land. They would eventually retake their homeland and stand as a beacon of freedom in a world of feudalism. Their language was the bedrock of English, which is the lingua franca of the world. Friesian freedom forever! ♥️⚔️
