Back when I worked in maintenance in the early 2000s they were having trouble getting replacement tires for the drive roll rims that drives the trains up the track at the start of the ride. They bought all the tires in the world they could find. There was talk back than if they could not locate more tires they would be closing the Mindbender ones their stalk of tires was depleted. Couple months ago I was in the mall and see that they had no drive roll tires or rims on the ride so I was not surprised at the announcement for the removal of the ride.

Having worked at galaxyland for a couple years myself, they actually told me that the mindbender was due to be taken down. From what I understood, larger coasters like mindbender have a certain lifespan. In this case, about 40 years. After which they must be removed.

On a few coaster enthusiast / technical channels also covering the closure of the _Mindbender,_ there is discussion of relocation elsewhere because of the excellent condition the ride is in from being indoors. A common theme being discussed relating to the closure is due to Hasbro going for a small children / family theme, and this intense thrill ride is geared for teens and adults. Everything needs lots of money (and parts) to maintain, but if the primary reason the iconic, world famous _Mindbender_ to be lost is because it doesn't fit a 'theme' is truly abhorrent.

"A common theme being discussed relating to the closure is due to Hasbro going for a small children / family theme, and this intense thrill ride is geared for teens and adults." As a welder, I often walk through galaxyland and check out the rides, structurally. If you look closely, there are many spots of fresh repair welds at stress points and moment connections. @LakeNipissing

No major attractions in Canada had the opportunity to make a profit between 2020 and 2022. Many faced forced government closures. There is a possibility there could be a huge resurgence for "fun" stuff again, but we will never know with the Mindbender. The name being mentioned for relocation of the Mindbender (apparently to Niagara Falls, NY) is Gene Staples, because he has already purchased two Schwartzkopf coasters. Because the Mindbender is indoors, and has not been exposed to wind, rain or extremes of temperature, it is expected to be in exceptional condition for a rollercoaster of its age, and therefore the interest. The difficulty with the Mindbender is it is integrated with the structure of the building, and both removal and reconstruction (support framing for an outdoor location) could be extremely difficult.

One of the coasters to get me into coasters. First inverting coaster I willingly rode, and first coaster featured in Travel Channel documentaries for me. I'm hoping Mr Staples has a home for it but I'm not holding my breath given the ride's age and the fact that it's had almost daily operation. Triple Loop's service life is likely extended comparitively given the fact that it traveled the fair circut (and was constantly carefully dissasembled/rebuilt) so thus more ability to spot structural problems.

I walk through and watch the rides operate, everytime thinking about the lives lost and how tragic the event must have been while hearing screams of people riding the mindbender, which is now removed obviously. Once I was walking through during Halloween and whoever put the decorations up put dummy bodies at the bottom of the climbing ropes making it looked like they had fallen. Feels distasteful. I understand that removing it would have been costly, (and unrealistic) but I think anything that takes lives due to safety issues should be removed always. I don't think the Mindbender is profitable. I think it would be difficult for ticket sales to cover the maintenance costs, or an anomalous repair cost. It hasn't seemed popular for a long time. If there was profit in it, WEM would keep it. Instead they will replace it with multiple rides/games with higher profit potential.

You have way too much faith in the people that run wem. It was probably only removed because Hasbro wants everything kid friends and this ride was deemed too extreme. Which Is objectively a bad reason to make this change as wothh most changes they make

@BestEdmontonMall

@@triforkalliance7155 you said it was objectively a bad reason if it was too expensive to run. If the numbers don't make sense, and they can't operate it without losing money, that's an objectively valid reason as to why it should close. I love the Mindbender perhaps more than anyone, but even I acknowledge that if it's not profitable, then a mall ( of all places ) has a objective reason to close it. This is what "objectively" means - it can't be used to express opinion on a theme, that's exactly the opposite.

@Best Edmonton Mall I never mentioned money? I specifically said it was too extreme that that was why I think they are removing it. I think you replied to the wrong comment Also the mall runs alot of stuff at a loss, hell even the whales are run at a loss since they have to clean them. Catering galaxyland to a younger audience is going to alienate more people than it brings it, making less money so even by your standard it's objectively a bad decision

Something that a friend of mine mentioned is that they might destroy the ride because of the amount of deaths that occurred. The ride would stop upside down causing a blood rush to the brain, if stuck like that for long enough you might pass out or d!e from the amount of blood in your skull.

@@EddieAyed863559491754 It has mostly been out of service between 2020 and 2022. Apparently it did run for a short period of time during the Covid shutdowns, and then got "mothballed" again. Aside from maintenance work (possibly requiring certain shutdown days), the Mindbender has operated continuously from after modifications were made shortly after the fatal derailment in June 1986 until 2020.

Really? Then _you_ don't have to ride it. When I look through comments on coaster enthusiast KZbin channels, the Mindbender has an incredible following from around the world, and described as one of the most intense rides with some of the highest positive G forces to be experienced. Because of the limited space available for almost one mile of track, there are wicked tight curves compounded with steep drops that are very unusual. I was just walking around this a few days ago and looking at the track. There is nothing like this elsewhere, even from Schwarzkopf.
