Honestly, this feels more like a frigate than a corvette. Especially when you compare it to the Raider-class corvette. Still a neat ship that could be used as a step in the chain until one reaches the honor of commanding a Star Destroyer
@jayburn00
@jayburn00 4 ай бұрын
These days, irl, frigates and corvettes are very similar in size and armament, although there are some frigate classes that are significantly larger. A good example of a corvette that is smaller is the one used by Norway. A good example of frigates and corvettes being similar is the sa'ar classes (line of French warships), some being called corvettes and others being called frigates I think. Back in the age of sail however, corvettes were always significantly smaller than frigates, with frigates typically being second in size only to ships of the line (man of wars). Back then, frigates were closer in role to WW2 cruisers.

Correction, the "heavy turbolasers" are mediums, as listed in the discussion that you have referenced. Not trying to call you out, just noting the mistake. So many ships and weapons listings make mistakes inevitable over time. The big dish i believe is also listed as a sensor system, thus the "Vigil", or lookout.

What you had is people realizing that an ISD had more ion cannons and turbolasers on a flank than an entire Mon Cal had on the whole ship and literally fanficced heavier Mon Cals to even make sense that they could stand up to an ISD. So in conclusion...I will take the original source material and creator over any Wookiepedia entry.

it's pretty widely established already that the A-wing crashing into the SSD bridge was the straw that broke the camel's back. It wasn't the sole reason for what destroyed the SSD. Right before the entire Rebel fleet focuses fire on the SSD and destroys it's engines when it's shields are destroyed, you can even see them on fire later, the bridge being destroyed caused the remaining engines to push the SSD into the DS1 due to a lack of control. Also Bridges we're constantly targeted but that's why shied bulbs tend to be located on the bridge, closer proximity to the primary shield emitter.
@jamesd5842
@jamesd5842 4 ай бұрын
To build on that, didn’t the A-Wing pilot have some unique crystal array that made it able to pierce point defense shields better than would otherwise be the case? I also distinctly remember reading in perhaps the novelization that had the Executor not been so close to the Death Star at the moment the perfect storm of damage was inflicted (engines disabled/bridge destroyed/flight control inoperable) that the secondary bridge would have been able to take over in time to avert the collision; had it not been by the Death Star at all there wouldn’t even have been an issue
@SephirothRyu

DS2, not DS1, but yeah. It was a perfect storm of damage with the main bridge being knocked out at just the right time, while also being too close to the DS2 for them to get control online at one of the backup locations before it plowed into the oversized death ball.

@@GreenBlueWalkthrough especially when under heavy jamming, the main bridge we see being the observational bridge is imperative as, in a cut line from ANH (that is present in the novelization) "They can jam any instrument on your ship except your eyes" I always pictured the battle bridge as a CIC type room similar to the design of the Briefing room in the imperial missions for Star Wars Squadrons. A cross between the Death Star's overbridge but with crew pits like the main bridge. I was happy to finally see a room like that in Squadrons, but the fact that they only seemed to ever use it as a Pilot briefing room was rather disappointing (that and placing it right by the hangar bay is a mistake imo. At least for a CIC, Star Destroyers are so massive you could probably get away with having the CIC in a different location on every ship.

Paired with Lancer class-frigates, the Vigils could have defended the Empire against Rebel raids. Otherwise, the light turbo lasers and the ventral lasers could be swapped out for anti-fighter quad laser turrets. That could allow the primary gun turrets to either carry bigger guns, or fit quad mounts. Either way, the Vigil could have dominated smaller engagements, and acted as flanking cavalry in larger battles. It's pretty much a light destroyer as is, but scale the same design up a little, and you have a destroyer-class* ship. *Star Destroyers are neither star destroyers or destroyers, they are battleships (which happen to have the coolest name ever, even if it is dumb).

I find it awfully plot convenient how Kuat never bothered to install an internal backup bridge in any of their designs, or even any zero escape pods (lifeboats). Y'know... common things all real world battleships have by default? Then again, that's probably just part of the plot conveniece rule about always deliberately installing a fatal, one-hit-dead flaw in everything the Empire builds.
@Alexzander1989
@Alexzander1989 4 ай бұрын
Actually they did, both in the original EU and in the Disney era. It’s just that with the Executor specifically… the ship was damaged, in the middle of a maneuver, and got pulled in by the Death Star II’s gravity well before the secondary bridge could take over control of the ship after the loss of the primary bridge. There’s also the little detail that the Imperial Fleet was thrown into disarray after the death of Papa Palpatine cuz he was using a form of battle dominance on the fleet while he was watching Vader and Luke go at each other So yes, KDY ships do have those, they just the Executor crashed and blew up before they could bring the secondary bridge fully online 😅

Likely it was simply introduced too late to replace the Arquitens before the Empire fell. Also Kuat probably isn't the one making decisions on which ships get built. The crew size comparison to the Venator doesn't really make sense. Despite official classification, the Venator was functionally a Carrier. So its crew is no doubt inflated by a large number of pilots and flight line maintainers, which the Vigil's tiny hanger (carrying significantly less complex fighters) wouldn't need or be able to support.

Problem is the bridge can still be attacked from the top, it's no less exposed than on a star destroyer, if anything, it's more so. In the case of the vigil that's a matter of size, adding extra bulk to the top of the command module wouldn't work very well for this vessel. Venators, Acclamators, MC-85s and many other Mon Calamari vessels can have their bridges attacked from the sides and above. Perhaps most exposed of all, the Resurgent (which was supposedly designed to have it's bridge "less exposed" but can in fact be attacked from any direction except below it.) Also the Providence's rear spire isn't the bridge, it's an observation platform. The bridge is closer to the front of the ship. The Star Destroyer's bridge is in fact one of the most well protected of any capital ship, as the entire "head" of the vessel surrounds it, making the only viable attack vectors being ones that the bridge crew can see. You can only attack the Bridge on a Imperial class star destroyer style module from the front, which makes it easier to concentrate point defenses to protect. Far too many people think the "head" of a star destroyer is a weakness rather than a strength, Their proposed solutions generally being tantamount to claiming the human brain is too exposed in the skull, then saying that the entire head should be removed and the brain put on the shoulders with no skull to protect it.

it's actually slightly more exposed than on the Star Destroyer, but due to it's size it's easily forgiven as it can't dedicate as much mass above the bridge, as it stands this bridge can be attacked from above, you cannot reliably do that on the standard ISD bridge module. Contrary to popular misconception, the ISD bridge is one of the LEAST exposed and attempts to remedy this with fan designs or even official disney designs (looking at you Resurgent) only make it more exposed.

If you're to the point to where you have to use your eyes to guide the ship, assuming the power isn't out and you can steer it, seeing what's in front of the ship won't do you much good. All you can do is look out the window and say "There's some ships out there." You could only guess at their distance and how fast they were traveling. You'd also be totally blind to anything below the ship and probably what's to either side of it along with what's behind it. You couldn't see anything that's behind another ship like scanners can do.

"my scope's negative I don't see anything" "pick up your visual scanning" The novelization (which is based on an earlier version of the ANH script that had more exposition and technobable, much of which was edited out for pacing) added "remember, they can jam every instrument on your ship except your eyes." Base One was able to pick up the TIES but the X-Wing sensors couldn't because they weren't powerful enough to get through the interference.

@@moffxanatos6376 retroactive inserted explanation for bad writing in the name of the rule of cool. Lukas is a WW2 fighter plain nerd and it shows in SW, it shows hard. He has next to no clue about military tech, tactics and so on and so forth. As for the argument, there is next to no way in which jamming would entirely outstrip sensors because in a well written world, it´s a cat and mouse game to see who is faster or better. One side of the tech might get ahead for a while but never to the spot where the other side becomes utterly useless except the total garbage of Mk1 eyeball. You may enjoy and like SW all you want and more joy to you but please don´t try to bring pseudo explanation to excuse uninformed, bad writing.

@@andreasmuller4666 That's not retroactive, it's literally from an earlier version of the script, the novelization came out before the movie was released based on that script. Gundam also has jamming outstrip sensors, though it's more a byproduct of their reactors than a deliberate development. In the case of star wars it's a simple matter of being part of the arms race, much like how firepower can outstrip protection, in this case jamming outstrips sensors. In this case, the jamming IS ahead, and comfortably so on craft of similar size. Requiring them to get in close and even then it takes a while for their targeting systems to get through. Hence the fighter appearing to dance around the targeting computer despite barely moving relative to the pursuer. Your obsession with declaring things "bad writing" belies your own inability to understand how things could change drastically with technology developments in unexpected ways, a breakthrough technology that cannot be readily countered. Much like how body armour all but completely disappeared for centuries due to firepower outstripping protection in real life for so long. Especially in a galaxy far far away that doesn't need to have progressed the same way we did (and as Tales of the Jedi shows, very much did not.) Not to mention the fact that Star Wars, while it was harder sci-fi in the earlier drafts, has always been space opera which plays fast and loose with realism. The WW2 influence is because up until then exciting space combat didn't exist and the closest you could get was from WW2 dogfights, so he wanted to emulate that.
