I can't stand the Starlights. They were like the Outers but without actually backing up their attitudes. Haruka and Michiru could be aloof and haughty to the Inners but we see the reasons for it and they check out and make perfect sense, they're also cool and elegant and have a humorous side (especially Haruka).

+Nightman221k That’s what I loved about the Outers in S, they weren’t on Sailor Moon’s side but they had reasons why, they challenged the entire narrative of blindly following Sailor Moon because she’s past royalty and presented the question on saving 1 versus 1,000,000. I know people hate them for that, but that’s what made them stick out to me when I was a kid watching S to this day. They make you think about Sailor Moon’s philosophy and various tropes. The Starlights were cringey because they were jerks just for the sake of being jerks yet everyone including the Inners worshiped the ground they walked on, even when Usagi was clearly uncomfortable. I was shocked how different they were in the manga.

Actual,my favorite is Saturn. I love her relationship with Chibi Moon and the Outer. Honestly, I can kind of relate to her. Both of us are young and are seen as outsiders and have difficulties in social situations. Sailor Saturn and I both think that we aren't really like by classmates. She has gave me a lot of strength and confidence in life.

The thing I’ll never forgive them for is for cutting her out of the movies. Especially in the Sailor Moon S movie (Hearts in Ice). I mean, Hotaru *did* appear in the manga version of the same story! And she kicked ass!! There was *no* excuse! Them taking her out of the Sailor Moon SuperS movie (Black Dream Hole) was just insult to injury after that! I just wanted to see her animated with a bigger budget... T_T Good video and great sentiment; I’m glad others share my thoughts! Lol

Dream Hole definitely was an insult, since Pluto being there was nonsensical (due to her "death" in S), so by all means Saturn could've been in. As for Hearts on Ice, I checked but she was not in the manga version at all. she still should've been in the movie tho let's be real

I'd have like it if she were in the movies but it couldn't make sense because she was in her baby form at the time the SuperS movie would have taken place. And she wasn't a sailor guardian in S until the very climax of the season. (I think Pluto being alive isn't a plothole if you play around with the timing of the S movie since Setsuna only "dies" at the tail end of the season) The movies are loosely canonical but there's enough wiggle room to make them fit if you try; but if Hotaru were included it would be even harder to fit into the events of the series.

@Everyone saying she was a baby as an excuse (spoiler warning) Pluto was supposed to be DEAD after using time stop to save Uranus/Neptune but there she is in the SuperS movie without a scratch or explanation! They’re just like “Oh hi Pluto!” Chibiusa doesn’t even react to her coming back to life and she had a confrontation with her spirit! The video game Sailor Moon S: Another Story already patched up the baby issue by accelerating her age because there was a huge threat. So did Stars. It’s not hard. Also I feel like the Stars premier was like an unofficial movie

In the manga, there was a positive story about Sailor Saturn. When she was reborn after suffering a short and unhappy life, the outer scouts gave her a joyous second childhood. After Saturn later regained her original form, she thanked them warmly for what they had done. I thought that this was better than any battle scene.

I was always so confused by Saturn. They made her into this huge deal of a character who could potentially destroy the universe, but she just becomes a baby and gets taken from her dad? Then she can't immediately kill the bad guy though she technically could? She seemed so important but never proved it.

In the manga Hotaru’s dad dies, I think in the 90s they thought that would be too dark for kids to see a dad die so they let him live in the 90s anime. It makes more sense for the outlets to watch Hotaru if the dad dies.

Honestly!!! I read the manga after watching the 90s anime and Hotaru/Saturn went from a character I casually liked just like every other character to my favourite magical girl of all time. Another thing that bugged me was Tomoe's story being changed, mainly in relation to how it affected Hotaru. In the manga, it does feel satisfying that she went from a lonely, cyborg girl with an awful father to a powerful soldier who had many close friends and 3 powerful outer moms.

The thing I don't like about the 90s anime is other than completely doing Saturn and Pluto a disservice by severely undermining their roles and appearances, the Inner and Outer senshis did not work in union throughout the series like the manga, where after the Infinity arc, worked together as one, fully assembled team of Solar System Sailor Senshi.

I mean, the 90s anime makers probably did that in order to emphasize a sense of 'maturity' in which the Outer senshis have over the Inner, which is what Naoko Takeuchi had portrayed for the most part of the manga's Infinity arc. But the 90s anime just went too far. I understand that Uranus and Neptune had a tendency to work in solidarity, but I can't see the necessity in making them so ruthless, cold-hearted and bitter towards Sailor Moon and the Inner senshis like how they are portrayed in the Infinity arc and the last episodes of the Stars arc. This certainly isn't how Takeuchi want them to be. The Inner and Outer did work together perfectly during the first cour of Stars act against Nehellenia though. And I really wanted to be more episodes like those ones.

considering how woefully underpowered the Inners are (with the exception of Sailor Moon) for basically two seasons, I have to agree. Sailor Moon gets a power up every season and the others get, what, 3? If you count getting their base form in season 1, and I think it was season 2 and 4 were their next powerups. While I vastly prefer the 90s anime over Crystal because of the added character development*, I will say that at least Crystal should have everyone stay at about the same power level (I've heard that everyone gets an eternal form in Stars in the manga), so at least no one is left to feel like set dressing on a side note, I despise how obnoxious chibi-Usa is...that and her electra-complex just make me severely dislike the character. I didn't even feel she was necessary past season 2

I've always felt the same about how Saturn was treated in the 90s. When I was watching it as a kid on my eBay VHS tapes lol she SCARED me in S3. I was terrified of her and her power- especially as it was my first time being introduced to a story that suggested that the most powerful wasn't necessarily the lead character (although the whole Messiah debacle is always a crazy debate). But once she turned back into a baby at the end of S3, I was like "........ wait, what? So we're not gonna see her again now?!" And then I have to agree with everything else you said, especially with the opportunity for Saturn to use power after she was reintroduced to the group. I do have to say something about the Galaxia moment though. I recently watched those few episodes and realized that Saturn and Pluto surrendering to the attack was them accepting their plan they must have made before hand, when they were all swearing "whatever it takes". They must have planned with all the outers to have it go down like that, I think.

As for the Galaxia moment, a few others are telling me pluto and saturn went along with their plan, but honestly the scene was way too vague and rushed. to me it looked as if only uranus and neptune planned it. so I wish the writers elaborated more on how saturn and pluto felt

I agree with everything except for the end about Uranus/Neptune “betraying” Pluto/Saturn. It was explained why they did that (so they can catch Galaxia off guard) and even in S, Uranus/Neptune have made it clear that their loyalty and duty are to their princess if not each other. I also think Saturn being brainwashed by Galaxia would have been a disservice to Hotaru considering her whole dilemma in S was that she was possessed by 2 different beings in her. It’s too much of a plot that should be reserved in fan fiction

Dude even as a kid I knew it was bullshit she didn't get enough screen time. As soon as I knew about her existence I was sooo curious to see her transform and use her attacks. Sailor Saturn is so underrated. I remember when I was 9-10 years old, I intrigued by Hotaru's backstory (what happened before and as Mistress 9 & Saturn) in season 3 (S) of 90s anime vers. I feel her identities are so mysterious. I even drew her picture in my diary book with full colors. She's so cool with her Silent Glaive. Couldn't agree more with your point of view, they really treated Saturn badly in this anime ver. Probably because she is a warrior of ruin & reborn, so they think her character is not really necessary to make a transformation sequence, more screen time & special episode. I also don't really understand why Uranus & Neptune object to revive Saturn. But it must be because she is warrior of ruin after all. Lol

@@ScienceProject99, they're really trying to replicate the original art style of the manga, which I find works great in print but just doesn't translate well to screen animation. Was a bit of a letdown for me when I heard that one of my fave anime was getting a reboot. Was hoping for something on the calibre of Fullmetal Alchemist. Brotherhood's animation was stunning and surpassed the original. Shame Sailor Moon didn't get that treatment.

TBH, I fell that all the outer senshi suffered from that same problem in the 90's anime. Pluto had her greatest moment cut from season 2 and moved to season 3. This also prevented Setsuna to be developed as a character separated from her sailor identity. Michiru / Neptune had almost no personality other then be good at everything. She could have been shown not being good at some subjects and benefiting from Amy's help is studies, despite being more advanced is school. And her waking up as a senshi should have been shown. Haruka was the better developed out of the 4 (discounting Otaru in season 3, before she woke up as Saturn). Still they could have done a better job later in season 3 and in seasons 4 and 5. I hope that, if ever there is a 3rd anime, it is a full anime with each issue being a season. And that they took the time to develop all 4 outer senshi in both their civilian and guardian forms.

I loved _Sailor Moon S._ Best season, period. From beginning to end, it was great. I loved the idea of Sailor Saturn being the evil/dark soldier. However, I thought they could've done a little more w/ her in the final season. She was a little too elusive. She definitely needed an official transformation and she needed a less intense special power. A missed opportunity was _Sailor Moon Super S._ What a waste of a season. All that Double Moon crap was so boring.

Wow, I never realized Saturn was cut from so many events! She's my #1 favorite Scout, and has been since the first time I learned about her during the heart snatchers saga. u.u She's wise, kind, and dark...not a combination that's easy to come by, even now. The idea of her starting off as a true villain, not just as minor antagonists like the other Outers, gave her a standard all her own. Can you imagine how cool it would have been for Saturn to intervene (or even join in) when Mini Moon turned evil later on? A best friendship that lasted even through darkness and betrayals...she'd have been the only one who could have understood Chibi Usa's dark heart. **sighs** ah, well. I do wish Pluto and Saturn would have been switched around, though. Trisha makes way more sense as Saturn, as she and her powers are all about rules and structure, which is what the planet symbolizes. Pluto, being Scorpio's ruler, is the planet of death and destruction. Hotaru's scythe, her dark colors, her mysterious and intense nature all play into that way more than a Capricorn.

even with only the one episode I saw when I was a kid, Saturn was one of my favorites. I also like Venus (cause I thought she was pretty when I was a kid, I watched this series when I was 10 or 11) and Star Fighter (cause I love how the relationship between him and Usagi develops more naturally than the one between Usagi and Mamoru (yes, I know Seiya is never actually a male in the manga. I'm talking strictly the 90s anime here) I actually thought this video was why Uranus and Neptune seemed to hate Saturn during season 3 when I first clicked on it XD

I guess you aren't thinking about this much. The anime and the Manga are completely different story plot wise. Sailor Saturn is supposed to be "The Silence" ; a guardian only awoken to destroy the world and rebuild it. They treat her that way throughout the anime and also she's always stays a young age after reawakening, there are just some perspective shots that make her seem taller. They treat her as a weapon of destruction because that's what she has been portrayed as. Furthermore, Neptune and Uranus took her star seed as part of their plan to take down Galaxia and Saturn would most likely understand this. Also why do you keep referring to her as "Super" Sailor Saturn? Nothing in the anime ever said this power up would be considered a "Super" form. There are a lot of differences between the anime and the Manga and I don't believe they were doing anything to purposely kick Saturn out. Also The outer guardians had very little to do with the dream arc and everything relating to them that had to do with the dream arc was shown in the beginning of Sailor Stars. I'm sorry, but this argument is full of holes. The anime just has an altered story plot from the manga so you can't compare them.

Good opinions. One of the things I love the most about the 90s anime for Saturn is her somewhat nuanced color scheme. The accent ribbons are so “dark burgundy” that they show almost black most of the times, which in my modest opinion it works SO much better. I agree with you in regard to her short screentime. Unfortunately the same could be said by 3 out of the 5 Witches 5 that suffered that some destiny.

They didn't hate her, the writers just wanted to keep all the main focus on a blonde crybaby who cries her way through every climax in every season. Why is she hailed as a hero in this anime again? I mean, why is she considered a role model? She sucks at school and everything else and her only goal in life is to get married and be a princess. While the other sailor scouts have real long-term ambitions. Ami (Mercury) is studying to be a doctor, Rei (Mars) wants to write her own music and probably take charge of the shrine after her grandpa, Makoto (Jupiter) wants to be a chef, Minako (Venus) wants to go into entertainment and be a world famous diva. Michiru (Neptune) is a talented painter and violinist and Haruka (Uranus) is a freaking NASCAR racer! I love these characters so much more for their real life goals that girls can look up to! And they're so much more likable than that wand waving crybaby who eats, sleeps, flunks school tests, dreams only about being a pretty dainty princess and chases after cute boys! I don't care if Usagi's the main character, she's a very unlikable main character.

Did you even pay attention to Usagi's growth throughout the series? Sure, she started off as a ditzy, dumb, airheaded crybaby who'd always try and run away from her battles, but this changed as the series progressed. The moment she got her memories back after her and the inner senshi's deaths, something in her changed. She even said it - "Goodbye, Old Usagi..." This proved that she'd grown up and realized her destiny as not just the princess, but a warrior. Underneath that still, however, she was still the Usagi with all of the traits and flaws that made up her character. She was a little whiny, a tad spacey, and still a bit of a klutz. But she'd grown. Denying that would mean denying everything that Sailor Moon is as its core - a coming of age story. A story about realizing your responsibilities and learning to take charge for yourself. She started off as this fourteen year old girl with the weight of the world on her shoulders, which is something people tend to forget. I wonder, if they were in her position, would they be able to accept the new life they'd been forced into and just... roll with it? Keep in mind, under her senshi exterior, Usagi was still a child, and being ordinary was something she'd longed for from the moment Luna gave her that brooch. She could eat and sleep and afford to be ditzy, because those were the little things that made up her ordinary life. Things that she'd come to appreciate since the battle with Queen Beryl. I would say that Usagi's growth was most prevalent during the scene where she saved Sailor Saturn. During that incredibly powerful scene, you could hear her anguish as she pounded against the ground, begging her brooch to work because she was that determined to save someone without anyone else having to suffer the consequences. She stayed true to her ideals. In the beginning of the series, Usagi would have burst into tears at the fact that things hadn't gone her way. But this was different. You could only hear and see Usagi's pure desperation to make things better. (And Usagi does have dreams, however unrealistic they may be. Like being a teacher, a nurse, a mother, an idol, and a plethora of other jobs that fall way out of her capability.)

It's weird, she's often a fan favorite, even non manga readers love her. Why snub her? Love the art but I always had an urge to do a mature live action version with an international cast. Definitely putting her out in front if I'm ever allowed to use the property.
