WHY did your emergency contraceptive pills fail? What went wrong?
You timed the emergency contraceptive pill just right - as soon as possible after sex.
It wasn't expired and you are pretty sure they were not fake.

@@alexaruffin9611 Hello, it's likely you ovulated after taking the pill and since you did not use protection after Dec 24, fell pregnant. That's the problem when not on a regular method - the pill works to delay ovulation but if you have sex again without protection or using another pill later in the cycle you could fall pregnant because that ovulation that was delayed the first time will happen at a later date.

Hi Henrietta, sorry for the delay in response. It's still better to take the pill than not to to do so on the day of ovulation. It still has a chance to work because you don't really know when on the day ovulation will happen. If your pill gets absorbed into your blood in enough time to act before the egg is released, there is a good chance it will delay the process and work. If it doesn't, there are other ways the pill might still work - 1, it could prevent the sperm meeting with the egg or 2, it could change the womb tissue and prevent the egg from implanting. But these two methods are not as effective as delaying ovulation. So I can't tell you IF it will work, because we don't know the exact time period when the egg release will happen on the day of ovulation. These are some of the issues that could make the pill fail. Your better option is to use a regular pill or the emergency coil which can be used 5 days after sex for protection.

Hi, yes you can. Taking Plan B AFTER ovulation makes it less likely to work. So the pill is unlikely to help. However, if you’ve already ovulated 3 days before sex; the egg may have died already by the time your partner’s sperm arrive in the womb. Our eggs survive 24-48 hrs after ovulation. If that’s the case you won’t get pregnant but it’s not because of the pill. Hope this helps.

Hi there - I'm sorry you feel scared. Keeping track of your ovulation is good. If you took plan B after sex as on the pill instructions - and - before ovulation, then it's a good chance that it's worked. Keep an eye on on the next period; and do a pregnancy test if it's light or later. Have you thought of which regular method of contraception you wish to use going forward?

Hi Jessie, thanks for watching and your kind comments. Ideally, the best thing is to use a regular contraceptive so the use of the EC method is only on a rare occasion. Using the EC pills too often can disrupt a woman’s menstrual period. So the EC pill shouldn’t be used on a regular basis at all😊

Hello Ricky, taking the emergency pill before ovulation is recommended as that's when it's most likely to work. The other consideration is - did you take it as soon as possible after sex? Hey Laura Thanks for writing in. The pill with Levonorgestrel - plan b, take action etc, works by delaying ovulation so if it’s happened or the LH has peaked, the pill may not work so well. In this kind of picture, I advise the copper coil as the best way to avoid unplanned pregnancy. The other pill, Ella (Ulipristal) could stand a better chance after the LH peak but before egg release but the coil is still the best. Hope this helps explain. Cheers

Hey Whitney, great question. Yes, you should take the pill - theoretically you can get pregnant ANY time during your cycle but it’s more likely during the fertile days. It’s not just enough to cover the day(s) of ovulation. You need to consider that after sex, sperm are alive in the womb from 5-7 days which ‘could’ mean there are healthy sperm waiting to meet the egg when you do ovulate. I took Plan B after having sexual intercourse on my first fertile day of my cycle, then 5 days later I had unprotected sex on my actually ovulation day (twice in a row) and I took another plan B the day after. It is one week after ovulation and for two days I had spotting, brown blood lasting only 2 days and it’s the third day and the spotting stopped. My period wasn’t due for another week. Hi Cel, thanks for asking. From BEST to WORST, these are the options I will recommend for emergency contraception if you are currently ovulating: 1. Copper Coil (Copper IUD) 2. Ulipristal acetate or Ella One (watch my video here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHOZmGxulLl2oKc) 3. Plan B (or Postinor or Post Pill or Take Action) 4. DOING NOTHING (though should never be an option if you want to prevent pregnancy) To answer your question, taking plan B may help *a little* but it's less reliable while you are ovulating or after ovulation. It may have a small effect by making the discharge in the vagina thicker so the sperm cannot meet the egg - but this is not thought to be super effective compared to delaying ovulation. Hope this helps.

The best is doing what you have - take the pill as soon as possible after Sex. That gives the highest chance it’s worked. Hello, thanks for asking. Ovulation generally occurs in the middle of the menstrual cycle, we can't predict it exactly, but for most women with a regular period, its around day 14. If yours was on 24th, the EC pill is less likely to work if you take it on 26th since ovulation has already happened. (The pill mainly works by 1. delaying ovulation which has already happened). However, to a lesser extent it could 2. work by making your mucus too thick for the sperm to move towards the egg. If that fails, it may 3. try to make it hard for the fertilised egg to implant to the womb lining. How well these two other methods (2 & 3) work, we are not sure. Hi Katrina, I know this can be stressful but if you took the pill the right way your chances of success are better. If by 16th day you mean it was after ovulation, then the chances it’s not worked are higher. However the other way the pill may still cover you (to a smaller degree) is by changing the lining of the womb to prevent the egg from implanting - or even limit the ability of the sperm to travel to the egg. So, there are some chances it might work to a small degree but the principal way is to delay ovulation. Thanks

Hello, If a woman is ovulating normally; each month she releases an egg from one ovary. The egg enters the fallopian tube and then is guided into the main body of the womb. The egg generally survives for 24 , sometimes 48 hours at most after release. If there is no sex, then the egg dies and with the rest of the nner womb lining is shed as menstrual blood in the period. Hey Camille, thanks for writing in. I understand your worry. The truth is - no one can predict a lady’a exact ovulation time to the minute or hour. It’s possible you took it well before the hormone peak and egg release and it does work. When there is need to be very sure of protection the copper coil is the best option and can be used within 5 days of unprotected sex. Or, the Ella pill which is more effective than the levonorgestrel (plan B or Ipill etc). Please try not to be anxious, if you cannot use either of these methods then watch for your period; do a PT if it’s delayed by more than 1 week. Best wishes,

Ovulation has already happened and your egg most likely will be shed as menstruation in the new cycle. Hi Nyjah, there’s a chance you took your pill before the moment of ovulation, and it might work. Other mechanisms like reducing how well the sperm travel could also help the pill work to prevent pregnancy. Hey Alecs, this information is based on the pills with levonorgestrel like Take Action, Plan B, Levonelle, Postinor etc. So, the emergency pill works best if you take it straight away after Sex and for most of them, if it’s taken before you ovulate (before your fertile window). After ovulation, they could still work to slow the sperm down making it hard for them to travel in your womb to the egg. It might work and prevent you from getting pregnant. Do a pregnancy test if your next period is light or delayed. And don’t forget to check in with your provider to see a regular method that might suit you and save worry and hassle. All the best!

Hello doctor, I took the plan b an hour after the incident and while my period was late for 2 days( I have irregular period so it was fine) and I was on low chance of getting pregnant days. I started bleeding an hour later after the pill and the next day I got my late period, fast forward it’s been one month and I should have period tomorrow but I’m experiencing for 3days already small small cramping and tender boobs, does that mean that pill worked,I’m not pregnant and just having PMS symptoms,pls help :(

Hi Jen, thanks for asking. I think pregnancy is unlikely going by the info you’ve shared: 1. ✅ You took the pill after ovulation and so outside your fertile window where the chances of pregnancy are less. (You should know that after ovulation the egg remains alive for 1-2 days but again, your timing for sex seems to be after this could have happened). 2. ✅You took the pill in good enough time after Sex as recommended. 3. The pills mainly work by delaying ovulation like I explained in the video- but you took them After you already ovulated. ✅However they could still work another way - in case the egg did meet a sperm, the pill *may* be able to change the womb lining and prevent the fertilised egg from implanting in the womb. (We’re not sure how much it can do this, but there’s a possibility it could). Hi Anyari, thanks for asking. There’s a small possibility of getting pregnant during the period but unlikely in most cases. But it’s always important to protect yourself if you are not ready for a baby. Now, if you took Lydia post pill (emergency pill) as soon as possible after Sex, then it’s most likely to work. The time just after your period is also outside your fertile window so I’m pretty optimistic it’s worked. (Always check a Pregnancy test if your next period is delayed more than 7 days as the pill is not 100% guaranteed.) Best Wishes

Hi Jojo Brown, thanks for watching. If you've not ovulated yet then the Ellaone allows you up to 5 days after sex to give you protection (see more in this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHOZmGxulLl2oKc). The other pill which you took 3 hours after sex also works better taken before ovulation. After ovulation, they can still work but to a less degree. I would advise that taking the EC pill (Ellaone or any other) more than once a month can disrupt your menstrual cycle; making your periods irregular, so perhaps you would consider getting a regular contraceptive method to avoid this. Hello Grace, good question. The pill is probably less likely to work at this time being so close to ovulation. Pills like Postinor or post pill work to delay ovulation - it may have already happened by the time you take the pill. Yes, there can be other less-strong actions of the pill like *making it hard for the sperm to reach the egg or *even changing the womb lining to prevent the egg settling in, but these are secondary measures and we do not know how well they work in the pill. Often, the best method to use at this time will be the Copper coil - you can insert it by the 5th day from ovulation and it’s quite likely to prevent the pregnancy happening. [Another pill , Ella (Ulipristal) may also work better than Postinor]. I’m happy to explain these methods - send an email [e-mail] Cheers

Hello Wykeshia, having implantation bleeding so soon after ovulation on Thursday seems very unlikely. Taking the pill as soon as possible after Sex is ALWAYS a good thing. The earliest your test will show is after 3 weeks from taking the pill. So the bleeding may be an effect of the pill. Hi Iris, thanks for your question. If you took the pill before ovulation, then it’s most likely working whether or not you were getting any cramps. Hey Jenna, sadly no one can tell if you’re pregnant till you do a test - the earliest being 2-3 weeks after Sex with a high sensitivity pregnancy test. But we could look at the chances the pill worked - which keeps you less anxious while waiting for the test. From what I gather, you’ve taken it 25 hours after sex (within 72 hours. Also you took one pill 12 hours after the other - which is recommended. So, if you weren’t already pregnant and you had them before ovulation, they’ve probably worked. I know it’s no guarantee but how it helps reassure a little. Best wishes.

Hi Zizi, if you took that pill the day after ovulation it’s unlikely to work. If after having sex the second time but on the day of ovulation, it’s chances of working are low, too. With the emergency pill Ella, you have a 5 day window - after Sex to take the pill. But with most of the others - plan B, take action, Postinor, Levonelle, you should take pill within 72 hours. The sooner, the better. So there is a chance the pill doesn’t work; just in case please watch for a late period.

Hi Judy, Thanks for writing in. Given that your ovulation is roughly about day 15-18, you took the pill in good enough time to work. The bleeding you have is likely a side effect from the pill - it can bring your period forward, delay it or cause a short period of bleeding that is not pregnancy related. You may have a bleed around your next period, a bit early or later. Please do a Pregnancy test if it’s delayed longer than 1 week. Cheers

Hi MisakiMei, I really can't say whether you will be pregnant or not. With EllaOne (Ulipristal), you do have up to 5 days for protection as long as you take it before ovulation. It looks like this is what you did, so I think there's a good chance the pill should work. I don't know what you mean by 'something happen again 1 day after you took Ella One'. Unprotected sex happened twice: 4th day of period and a day after taking EllaOne (2 days after period) Thank you so much for your information. Hey I’m worried I had unprotected intercourses with my girl and when I was pulling out I came a little in her when exiting but some still got in there. Hi Matthew, thanks for watching the video and your question - I understand the worry. Unfortunately, there’s little you can do except wait for her next period. You/she did the right thing by having the EC pill as soon as possible after Sex. If she’d taken it before ovulation, there’s a much better chance that it’s worked. While the day of ovulation could be estimated for some ladies, the exact timing is not possible for now. Please be on the look out for her period, and if it’s later than 7 days or doesn’t feel like her usual period, she should have a pregnancy test done. Best wishes.

Hi there Chinaza! Great question and thanks for watching. There are some signs that a woman is ovulating but many women do not actually feel them and so cannot tell when they are ovulating. Some women use an app to monitor these signs and that gives only a guide, while others use ovulation kits or ovulation tests to predict. Most of these kits use urine to check the hormone level, while others use saliva. In any case, These are the signs some women may get: higher body temperature, tender breasts, or pain in the abdomen/tummy. Some notice that their vaginal discharge around ovulation is different too and they may feel more like having sex. But are these reliable if you are trying to prevent pregnancy ? If you are trying to get pregnant it could help to know when you are fertile, but relying on this to avoid pregnancy is NOT recommended. Hello Nani, It's quite reasonable to start to think of doing a PT - usually we recommend you do one after taking the emergency pill if the period is delayed by 7 days. Hi, the risk of pregnancy is higher when you take the pill after ovulation because the main way it works is to delay ovulation. To a little extent it might work by making it hard for the sperm to travel in your body to the egg. It might even make it hard for the fertilised egg to plant in your womb.
