In Legends, the DC-15A was one of the most powerful heavy blasters the galaxy had ever seen. Along with a barrel more than twice the length of the carbine version, offering much better muzzle velocity, it had a setting that allowed the user to overcharge the tibanna gas flow and fire an extremely devastating blast capable of penetrating ferrocrete and light armor at ranges up to a kilometer (presumably, I think Battlefront II added a zero), serving as a dual purpose anti-material rifle. With the CIS's wide variety of vehicles and heavy infantry, this was considered a much more important utility. Of course, the GAR carried a variety of ion ordnances including the shoulder mounted cannon that Eck came up with, especially if you want to take the equipment in the games as entirely canonical, which is debatable
@phoenixx913 Жыл бұрын
The overcharge feature of the DC-15a enabled the weapon to blow several foot wide hole in a ferrocrete wall and pierce heavy infantry grade armor. and the max range for the rifle was actually 10kms and it could be fired at that range in its normal power setting.

I’d like to see Rahm Kota brought in if he’s not already I’m actually not sure of his canon status. I think he’s be perfect to have in like a 3 episode arc in season 7 of clone wars where he initially dislikes and disparages Anakin and Obi-Wan for the foolish military decisions they’ve made. I think particularly having Anakin start the arc acting like he’s the greatest military mind ever and having Kota basically call him an idiot for his decisions. Then at the end of the arc have Kota tell Anakin the he has earned his (Kota’s) respect as a general but Obi-Ean hasn’t as a means of driving a wedge between Anakin and Obi-Wan. Here is a question i've had for a while: in our universe we refer to event timelines and BBY or ABY, What calendar did they use in universe and what year was it?
@arrun51254 жыл бұрын
a question I have often had as well. I presume that different planets and cultures would have different systems and also different governments. It is likely that the empire for example took the year 0 from the formation of the Empire, and it may be that the First Order would do that as well, whilst perhaps the Republic took year 0 from some old important date like the Ruusan reformation and perhaps the new republic from the downfall of the Empire. I think that would probably make most sense.
@Daniel_Jones4 жыл бұрын
(my time has come) This is actually answered in the canon book "The Rebel Files". That book is a collection of documents and conversations about the formation of the Empire. In the book, they date everyth9ing with BFE and AFE (Before the Formation of the Empire and After the Formation of the Empire) when addressing the new years the following quote is shown "In addition to wiping away the Republic, the Emperor reset the dating system to the time before the formation of the Emire and the time after its formation-yet another display of his absolute control."-Leia This calendar only lasted to 25 AFE. After this (in legends) it was switched to the common BBY and ABY after Mon Mothma became the Chancellor of the New Republic. In canon, they went to BSI and ASI (before Starkiller incident and after Starkiller incident) I hope this helps you.

Another huge advantage of ion weaponry is that disabled droids can then be salvaged and reprogrammed to be *GAR droids.* They can either march with the GAR with a new colour scheme (commandeering enemy equipment is _standard practice in attrition warfare)_ or be released to infiltrate the CIS and raise mayhem behind enemy lines. Still the same could be done just by scavenging the battlefield for undamaged parts and _mix and matching_ to get working droids. Really leads to a #AskEcks of _why the GAR didn't use hacked CIS droids_ - besides the three that R2-D2 reprogrammed. …

Great video, interesting analysis. Here's my thoughts: I agree with you that blasters are generally more useful because of accuracy, destructive power, and that they can be used against organics. But also, ion weapons only disable droids temporarily, so if you did use ion weapons, you still need some way of permanently killing them. But, that said, I think they could've used ion weapons for some things. Maybe an RPG kind of weapon firing an ion warhead, or a man portable guided missile launcher, or an ion shotgun for close quarters combat like on a ship that could disable a Super Battle Droid with one full discharge. I also think that maybe the Republic could've tried doing a BDZ on a planet using ion cannons instead of turbolasers. Anything with an electronic circuit gets fried, but living things don't get killed, so that eliminates a lot of collateral casualties.

Maybe include a grenade launcher on the standard clone blaster to launch conventional grenades and special emp ordinance? Then just vary what grenades issue based on who you're up against. Frags or flashbangs for organics, emp and HEAT for droids. Then have have ion special or "heavy" weapon options for squad heavy weapons or squad specialists, like how irl infantry platoons have mortars and medium machine guns, and individual squads have one guy with a light machine gun and/or one guy with a marksman rifle. Just swap in varying size ion weapons in that role as they become necessary, using automatic blasters and mortars or rocket launchers as standard issue special and heavy weapons.

It would make double sense for the Republic to rely heavily on Ion Weaponry during the Clone Wars but of course, they had to stick with conventional blasters, especially for Order 66. Speaking of, I wonder how the Empire or the First Order would utilize Trihexalon if they legalized it again?
@KryyssTV4 жыл бұрын
I would say the answer is actually far more simple. If you look in canon, every ion cannon has either been a fixed emplacement, part of a major battleship or equipped on heavy bombers like the Y-Wing. What all of these things have in common is their power generators. The Y-Wing had especially strong shields, stationary turrets had access to generators used to power whole facilities and the Malevolence was an unusually large and powerful vessel. This suggests that ion weaponry is very demanding on power supplies which is why they are impractical for infantry and armored vehicles but small single-use ion torpedo's and detonators were possible.

The Battlefront games answered this. Ion shot turns bolts blue and is supposed to do higher damage to machines like vehicles. The only reason it doesn't in Clone Wars matches is for balancing as much as the clones already fire blue shots. So while it's an easy visual cue to make the good guys visible, it also has a small lore explanation that while not explicit is definitely suggested.
@javiersavala23854 жыл бұрын

The problem with the Ion weapons could easily hit friendly units because of ion dispersion is bunk, mainly because the reason stated is stated from how huge ion ship weapons and large anti vehicle ion weapons disperse, which is logical considering the power generation used, it doesn't explain how in the universe which includes revamped and Kotor 1 and 2, which had hand held ion weapons as a standard feature produces by more than a few galactic weapons manufacturers
@skyhawk5544 жыл бұрын
Easy answer, production capacity and logistics. Every weapon system an army uses not only increases the amount of weapons and amo needed but also spare parts tools and more. So the total material that needs to be manufactured and distributed goes up exponentially, and takes the costs with it. Besides, if the GAR got to specialize its weapons then the CIS could do the same, to far more graphic ends.

its my understanding that, besides needing large area effect lightning stun weapons to be effective, that the main problem with the cis vs republic was mass troop management. if the republic had enough stun weapons to win battles, that would only leave the droids to be salvaged and used elsewhere. the republics biggest need was to destroy and limit the production of droids, therefore needing heavier and more laser type weapons to fight with. droids stunned can be reset and used again, recycle if you would. droids blasted apart would render them un usable without a proper smelting factory.
@phoenixx9134 жыл бұрын
They actually did in a way, the clones weaponry fired bolts of hyper ionized plasma, which made them very effective against droids while still retaining their effectiveness on organic targets. Enabling them to fight both pretty equally without having to swap to completely different weapons for organics as opposed to droids. In addition to that the clones used various EMP weaponry.
@adventwolfbane4 жыл бұрын
Plus the blasters they used already had EMP characteristics since they had plasma added to the bolts that do more damage to machines hence the blue color.
@Meravokas4 жыл бұрын
Technically speaking when you consider the properties as detailed in the visual dictionaries, and just the general 'color' designation given to things in the SW universe. While not strictly ion weapons, DC series weapons have a higher EMP factor on target due to the level of plasma they're using and the amount of EM cohesion used for each shot. Which is why even as the S variant came to semi standard issue, many Clones stuck with the heavier and ultimately more effective standard 'heavy' rifle variant.

I was under the assumption that the reason the clones blasters fire blue bolts was because they were calibrated to have a partial ionic charge that helped with deactivating the droids while maintaining most of the traditional strengths of a blaster.

I always thought it was due to a size-limitation of some sort. The ion weapons we always see are big, ship-mounted or emplaced weapons, so it might be that a proper ion weapon can't be shrunk down enough to fit in a blaster while still being effective, the same way it's rare to find explosive _bullets_ , while explosive cannon shells are much more common.

I want Admiral Daala to come back, could be done pretty smoothly I reckon, have her still be in command of an experimental weapons division operating so far in the dark they didn't realise the Empire fell and come back and stir things up a bit. Also Kyle Katarn. The galaxy need Kyle Katarn.

I think a good use of ions would be indirect fire weapons like mortar, grenades, mines for ground vehicles and facilities, and some rpg style for vehicles/airborne

I always thought the blue color of the bolts fired by Republic blaster weapons signified an ion or emp component to them, hence their relative uniqueness compared to the red bolts used by the Empire, Rebellion, and CIS (and even the green bolts used by the Naboo security forces in Ep 1). I figured they had a mostly normal effect against organics as seen in Ep 3 (not sure if any geonosians are seen getting blasted by clones in Ep 2) but had a slight advantage against electronics like droids. I'm sure it's explained in some book why the bolts are blue but those were always my thoughts about it based on what's seen in the movies and what I experienced playing games like Battlefront & Republic Commando.

Additional thoughts. Clone blasters firing blue bolts has been stated as having an ionised effect, though I'm not sure how cononical that is now. As for larger output ion weapons, Ion disruptors existed, possibly during the clone wars, but were banned by the empire due to the effect they had on living tissue.

Hey Eck, another question on same vein. Understanding that jedi can basically see where incoming shots are coming in and deflect them, there was obviously a limit to how big of a bolt can be deflected (although im not sure that was ever quantified). Couldnt the CIS just mass heavier weapons like tank main armament / spider droids etc and more easily overwhelm jedi, would there be a good reason they didnt or did the jedi have a defense to this?

I don't remember where I read it, but ion weapons are temperamental compared to conventional blasters. Even the ion cannon used in ESB was barely made functional before the battle due to difficulties in having it calibrated for use against orbitting capital ships (Echo base consisted of a lot of Han Solo modifications like using a ship ion cannon for defense). One of the guides also mentions charges for personal ion blasters needing to be fairly bulky and generally only contained single shots (pretty sure it was a section on Jawas). The Rebels series does have a sort of ion weapon that apparently was banned by the Senate but was still fairly deadly to organics, though that could just be new Canon basically handwaving away the differences between conventional blasters and ion weaponry (see Rise of Skywalker star destroyers using ion cannons and destroying Resistance ships versus disabling them).

Ion cannon shot guns could work really well, since droids can are often dangerous in close quarters. A kind of specialist weapon

To be fair, they did test out ion weapons on the battlefield. It's possible that it would have been very expensive relative to blaster/laser weapons.

They did. Droid Popper Grenades, ideal when rolled correctly against Droideka. Fast enough to get there, slow enough to not trigger the shields.

From what I understand Ion weapons smaller than what would be fitted on a vehicle were rare, as they were expensive and harder to supply/maintain for foot troops.

Halo theory idea What if the UNSC had never researched the spartan 2 or mjolnir programs. However one month after first contact with the covenant the UNSC INFINITY and her escort fleet of Autumn class cruisers appear at earth through a wormhole. The ships are fully operational and have manuals detailing how all ship systems, such as shielding and more advanced slipsace, operate and also how to build them for other ships. However it goes not have the spartan 4s. How does this affect the human covenant war? Does humanity win or lose? #askeck
@praeposter4 жыл бұрын
The covenant would be able to potentially trap the infinity and overwhelm it with numbers. As for the schematics, the Infinity took years to build and resources were stretched so thin that her sister ship, the UNSC Eternity was cannibalized for forerunner parts which the UNSC would find very hard to come by. Without the Spartans, FIRST STRIKE and the prevention of Halo firing would never have happened.
@rapter2294 жыл бұрын
@@praeposter OP said one month after first contact. The halo games take place over 25 years after first contact, so the UNSC would still have had almost its entire industrial base intact and plenty of resources.
@praeposter4 жыл бұрын
rapter229 i indeed forgot about the one month thing, but it really depends if Halsey is on board. I mean she’s the only one with knowledge of how to duplicate the forerunner engines and thats even if the UNSC can find the components. But i do think that if the UNSC had that knowledge along with the crews of those ships then they would be able to probably edge out the covenant in battles with less than 50 ships per side

I though Clones used ion blaster & the reason they used blue color blaster was from Gungans blue balls that took out the droids in Eps 1 so the Republic used it as blaster bold against droids

#askEck Why do ships in Star Wars not use planetary shields? The seem really effective at blocking turbolazers.
@DL24StaS4 жыл бұрын
Ah, an interesting question. There are many possible in-universe answers, such as: a) the clone army wasn't designed specifically to fight droids, as it was initially commissioned by Sifo-Dyas to counter the resurgent Sith threat, in whatever form it is going to manifest - hence a more versatile weapon set was needed, to be used against organics as well as droids; b) we can assume that the CIS engineers were no fools and knew about this weakness, therefore good insulation against ion weaponry would've been one of their first priorities, rendering it much less effective against CIS droids, or probably even almost ineffective; c) all the things that you've mentioned in the video - regular blasters did the job, are more versatile, probably more accurate, etc.

4:09 as much sense as this makes, barely a fraction of the battle droids killed in the Clone Wars TV show were killed with headshots. I've always considered that possibility but at the end of the day the issue is that writers are as fallible as anyone else, with the result being that very little within that show makes sense, not to mention SW lore as a whole.
