Because of the grandfather paradox. If he changed the event that leads to him being who he is, then he will never be able to go back and change those events. Since this would cause the existence of "the ghost of sparta" to be erased, he never gets the power to time travel back to that moment. It's pretty simple when you think about it.

Because that's not how time works in the GOW series. It seems like the world works on a causality system (Where what happens will happen despite your attempts to change it). When Kratos went back in time to the moment of his own death... he didn't save himself, he just resumed the fight against Zeus after his own death. If he saved his family he would simply be back under Ares service and Ares would just have him kill them again, causing the events to play out basically exactly as they did. The sisters of fate transported back in time to during the Ares fight and were going to destroy the sword that Kratos used to win before he could win with it... however, it seems that the sisters of fate viewed themselves as the writers of fate so highly that they missed the part were Kratos wins in the future and therefore he always wins anyway.... If they could stop Kratos that way then why not go back in time and break the sword before Kratos reaches their boss room. This whole situation could be avoided if they just did that. The only answer is that they were trying to manipulate Kratos into surrendering by talking big, exactly as they do in the pre fight cutscene. It doesn't seem like alternate timelines exist in that universe, so the sisters were attempting to intervene with the main timeline, which obviously wouldn't work because if it did, they wouldn't have any motivation to go back in time and thus the sword would never be broken and Kratos would win... The Sisters of Fate wrote it that Kratos wins his fight with Ares and so he did... they try to erase their own work, this causes an unlosable battle for Kratos. The sisters wrote that Kratos loses his battle with them, but as he says in the preceding cutscene "YOU NO LONGER CONTROL MY DESTINY!" so he just decides to not lose his battle against them, which causes them to panic and try to alter an un-changeable past that they themselves wrote.

Kratos loves his daughter he carries her memory even before and after atreus, the goddess of hell, showed him his daughter, and in doing that kratos had all he longed for he gave up all his powers and strength to be with her but realizing he has been tricked again he had to abandon her for to kill persephony for manipulaing him because they was going to kill his daughter a second time and him as well as everyone and everything else, so he did the duty athena sent him on put helios back in the sky, saves mankind, and himself whilst denying his daughter saves her as well.. the fates or the furies also haunted kratos for a time and they disguised themselves as kratos wife and daughter to get into his head in order to kill him, they was using his family as a weakness, even aries told kratos " with your wife and child dead, nothing will hold you back, you'll be even stronger" so i think apart of all that had a part to play, zeus even cursed his mom, and the god of death killed his brother also when kratos was finally opening up again zeus is at fault for pandoras death, because he was telling kratos "don't fail her, as you failed your family".. they always using this to destroy kratos internally but it sent him on rage, in so doing all this sent kratos on a RAMPAGE and he became death delivering death to everything and everyone 😂 kratos isn't just god of war but death and kratos deny that part of himseld that is god over death and war, which is why he holds back so much because of his rage he could kill his son and everything around him the gods played on kratos mind so much that he fear himself 😂

I think Fear has consumed kratos too... He became too focused on revenge he could care less about saving his family, even after controlling fate. That's why he unlocked the power of "hope" in gow 3 vs zeus AFTER accepting his past mistakes in fear dimension. Remember how Pandora's box was empty in 3? That's because the power was already in Kratos since the fight with Ares. It didn't even get absorbed by BoO, it was just blocked by kratos's wrath. "Pandora's sacrifice in vain. She died, because my need for vengeance." He realized that the whole chaos and massacre to extinguish the flame of Olympus, was a trap by Fear and Athena to engulf the world in chaos by his own hand.

Simply it wouldn't change anything because the main timeline like the main river will always keep going on its original course because if you go back in time to diverge it or make smaller Rivers you are just creating another stream or another timeline by branching it off thus this is not going to affect the original timeline in any way meaning this will be pointless if he's just going to Branch off every version of the past anyway including saving his family because that version of the timeline doesn't exist in the present at all it just exists as a branch that just coexist alongside the main timeline
