Why Didn't Lily Disapparate with Harry to Escape Voldemort? - Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're discussing the Potter family, Lord Voldemort, and a question that I’m sure has struck the minds of Potterheads worldwide at some point or another. That question is: Why didn’t Lily Potter apparate away from Godric’s Hollow with Baby Harry during the attack from Voldemort? The attack on the Potter residence, which occurred on October 31st 1981- claimed the lives of both of Harry’s parents- James, who died protecting his family, and Lily- who sacrificed herself to save Harry.
The attack came after Sybil Trelawney, who was interviewing for a position at Hogwarts, had a vision of ‘the prophecy’ - the same prophecy that would uproot the wizarding world.
“The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches ... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies ... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not ... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives ... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies…”
Snape, who was a death eater at the time, overheard Trelawney’s prediction and relayed the info to Voldemort. The prophecy threatened Voldemort’s position, and so he knew that he would need to take action.
Upon realizing that they were in danger, the Potters went in to hiding, hoping to put in place as many preventative measures as reasonably possible. They ended up finding sanctuary in the town of Godric’s Hollow- and they were protected by the Fidelius Charm. The Fidelius charm is an incredibly powerful piece of magic that conceals a secret inside of a chosen secret keeper’s soul, and in this instance the secret was the Potters location. The only hole in their plan was the man that they had chosen as secret keeper - Peter Pettigrew. A sniveling excuse for man, Pettigrew ended up changing sides and gave up the location of the Potters to Voldemort- leaving them wide open to his attack.
On one unassuming October day, Voldemort struck- and it was truly a day that would change the course of history. When he entered their home James Potter was the first to get in his way- the first line of defence protecting Lily & Harry. However- James had one very big problem: He didn’t have his wand on him. The Potters were caught completely off guard because they never suspected that their location would be revealed - and that they would be betrayed by their secret keeper. Because he didn’t have his wand, he was no match for Voldemort- though I suspect that even with it Voldemort would have made quick work of him. James was a talented wizard- but not even close to the level of the dark lord. From there Voldemort began making his way toward Lily and baby Harry- still dead set on his goal of killing the boy. At this point, as far as the real story line goes, Voldemort then advances towards the room containing both Lily and Baby Harry.
When he entered the room, Voldemort did something quite unexpected- offering Lily a chance to step aside. This was not a luxury that was offered to James, but at the end of the day it was only really Harry that he wanted. He explained that if she simply stepped away and let him have Harry, that he would spare her life. This was at the request of Severus Snape who loved LIly and likely deeply regretted relaying the prophecy to Voldemort. Unsurprisingly, however, Lily did not allow Voldemort to have her son- and refused- this lead to Voldemort murdering her with the killing curse.
Voldemort then turned his wand on Harry and let out one more ‘avada kedavra’- hoping to put an end to the Potter family once and for all. However, thanks to Lily’s loving sacrifice, the curse rebounded- killing Voldemort (for a time), and saving baby Harry.
So- that’s how things ACTUALLY transpired, but what I want to look at is WHY Lily didn’t just apparate with Harry- vacating the Potter residence entirely? When James told Lily to take Harry and run, there was undoubtedly a sort of unspoken understanding that he would die- so, why didn’t Lily take this opportunity to escape?
To begin to answer this question we can start by looking at the Deathly Hallows- when the trio travel from Shell Cottage to Gringotts:

@@marvinharleypires98 1: Grindelwald was the true master of the wand at one point and Voldermort knew this. 2: Grindelwald lost the wand and the allegiance to Dumbledore in their duel where he was defeated so he knew where it was, but actually unlike the movies in the book he didn't tell Voldermort showing he was loyal to his old friend and laughed in Voldermort's face.

@@Cazameilia you do realize that many of the potter family friends where willing to use the killing curse, but like the junior said it takes a tremendous amount of will to kill someone, you must really want them dead and no single hesitation, kinda like the patronus charm, undeniable focus on the memory of your most happiness. but this also means that the killing curse could be deflected and reflected, we know that the sister albus Dumbledore got very upset about the fight between her brothers and grindelwald together, so much so that she deflected the curse for both party's, but since this was based on emotions and no spell, the killing curse got her instead, actually i think voldmort did not cast the killing curse on lily but on harry instead, because of the emotion magic. we see it also in snape, he got twice as strong when releasing emotions.

The original choice was Sirius Black but Sirius changed it at the last moment because he thought him being the Secret Keeper was too obvious. Peter Pettigrew was too cowardly which is why he went to the Dark Lord anyways.

With all the magical means of instant escape you would think Voldemort would try and prevent them from being used prior to entering the house.

@@raghavparanjpe9556 I had not considered the effects of the fedilous charm on the ability of others to cast additional spells. Good observation. However since the secret keeper, petagrew had revealed the knowledge to Voldemort that may have allowed him to cast additional spells. From what we know of the Fedious charm effects on a location like Grimwold place, others were allowed to use magical spells affecting the house.

I don't believe the fidelius charm stops a user from apparating since in Sirus's house we often read about Molly Weasly chiding fred and george about apparating every few seconds.

This is just my guess, but I suspect people can Apparate WITHIN the bounds of the Fidelius Charm, but not beyond it. The reason Harry, Hermione, and Ron needed to go beyond the bounds of the Fidelius Charm at Shell Cottage was to Apparate to Diagon Alley, a place far beyond the limits of the Fidelius Charm they were currently under. Lily and James, if they had kept their heads, could have Apparated to another part of the house, lured Voldemort to their location, Apparated to the outer bounds of their Fidelius Charm, and Disapparated to another safe house. It is certainly possible, although risky since Voldemort would have been hot on their heels. Also, this is assuming the Potters didn't have other anti-Apparition measures in place. Anyway, these are my speculations.

I mean, why not apparate in the living room if they could?

I doubt Voldemort would have followed them directly to the doorstep of Dumbledore. That's asking for annihilation

Dumbledore was the one that took it from Grindelwald, Grindelwald knew that Dumbledore was a very talented wizard and since Voldemort asked Grindelwald, Grindelwald knew that the death eaters didn't have it. That leaves the Order of the Phoenix, but many didn't believe the elder wand even existed, so because many witches and wizards either get buried with their wands (or give it to their children which Dumbledore didn't have),it was very likely that Dumbledore still had the elder wand, even when he was dead

I always thought it's because you can't apparate with a baby. She might hurted Harry or even killed him if she tried to apparate, which is not good. Could explain why Dumbledore didn't apparate with Baby Harry to the Dursleys Home but instead asked Hagrid to transport Harry by flying in the motorbike.

@@MazochistaRozsas It's a crucial moment so I think Lily would choose an option she thinks would be safer : begging for mercy rather than apparating which would result in Harry's death (adult wizards are known to feel uneasy and even vomiting when apparate, I don't think babies can survive that sort of travelling) It may be not idealistic but there's seriously not much she could do, she can't fight without her wand and there's no one to save her. So all she can do at that moment is begging for mercy and hope that she and her baby would be spared.

Shock and fear. When people are shocked and afraid they don't react a certain way they would have liked to react. Hearing or watching someone you love die or being killed in any situation can freeze your thought process. Plus she probably didn't have her wand on her and a wizard or witch needs their wand to apparate/disapparate

Yes! I recently read the books and in the 7th book, you get the whole account of that night from Voldemort's perceptive. And Voldemort says how foolish both Lily and James were for not having their wands close to them. For trusting their friends so much.

I always thought that Lily didn’t apparate because Harry was only a baby, and with along side apparition, he probably would’ve let go. It also requires concentration and she would’ve been focused on leaving, with no idea where to go and she might’ve ended up splinched, which wouldn’t be much better. Also, like mentioned, she didn’t have a wand on her.

I think it's what others mentioned above me but I also think every wizard /witch has a certain magical potential that also determinates how powerful they can get. I believe ONE of the reasons Voldemort was so powerful was because he was the heir of Slytherin. So maybe grnetics play at least a small role

I always thought of magic like athletics. You can train to build up your magical skill, but there are limits to how far you can go, and some people just genetically have a higher limit than others. Also, we also see that your wand plays a part - if your wand isn't properly matched, your spells will be weaker than what they could be. Idk, that's what I think.

Potter cottage would obviously be protected by so many complicated spells and enchantments.... They would be so many, that it would be impossible for anyone to enter, but the catch is if anyone enters it would be a child's play for that person to empty the contents in the house ( ie people living in it)

Same. It's like someone in protective custody not carrying a firearm with them at all times. So many people in protective custody have died because they weren't prepared and fully expected everything to be fine. If your family's life is in danger, you always be prepared to fight and ditch.

@@enchantedtonight I get that, but how many people in the real world sleep with a loaded gun close by in case some bad guy comes trying to kill them, even in what they believe is a safe neighborhood? How many people in witness protection sleep with loaded guns nearby even though they're halfway across the continent with a new identity and job and everything? It's always better to be safe than sorry, and James and Lily knew their lives were in danger even if they thought they were safe at that moment. There was always a chance they'd go out and do something and get spotted and followed, after all. Anything could have happened. That they weren't armed and ready to fight at a moments notice shows a very naive view of the world, especially for two soldiers who had been actively fighting in a war just days prior to being sent into hiding, and were hiding because their child was specifically being directly targeted now. They'd fought Voldemort, they'd lost friends in the fight, they knew what was at stake when they went into hiding. It just isn't realistic behavior from people who know without a doubt that their lives and the lives of their most loved ones are at risk.

@@benjaminmacri2177 I don't think so. Obliviate was only used in the movie. In the books, it didn't say what spell she used. Obliviate erases memories and there is no spell to get those memories back. Prime example is Gilderoy Lockhart. The Imperious Curse, however, can be lifted. Hermione is a smart individual. She would have seen the use of this curse as beneficial especially now that it was made legal under Voldemort's regime. I believe she Imperioused her parents for the school year and then lifted the spell when she found them after the war, like she said she was going to.

The fidelious charm isn’t why she couldn’t apperate. That had already been broken by Peter. It was likely because wizard homes have antiapperition charms and she had no wand.

It hadn't been broken. Pettigrew who was secret keeper and anybody he told the secret too would be able to find the Potters but it didn't break the charm. If Snape, for example, showed up in Godric's Hollow while Voldemort was in the Potter home killing the Potters he wouldn't be able to see the house or get into it because Pettigrew never told him the secret. The magic would still work against Snape. This is why The Order of the Phoenix stopped using Grimmauld Place as a headquarters. Dumbledore was the secret keeper. When he died, everyone he told the location of Grimmauld Place to became the new secret keeper. Which meant that Grimmauld place was no longer secure. Not to mention Snape was now one of the secret keepers and of course they didn't know that Snape was really on their side despite the fact that he had killed Dumbledore.

@@MazochistaRozsas No, everyone that the secret keeper tells the secret to becomes the secret keeper when the original secret keeper dies. Hence why the Order stopped using Grimmauld place as headquarters. There were too many secret keepers when Dumbledore(original secret keeper) died there were too many secret keepers significantly reducing the security of Grimmauld place and even worse Snape, who as far as the order knew had betrayed them, was one of the secret keepers. The spell breaks when the caster dies. Harry speculated that the spell breaks when the subjects of the spell die but for that to have been true Harry would have had to die too in the Potter house but when he visited the house in Deathly Hallows it was visible so the spell had to have been broken. That would suggest that when the caster dies the spell breaks. Thinking about it, James and Lily were really, really dumb. If James casted the spell he should have made Lily the secret keeper and vice versa. They were in hiding so they wouldn't have left the house for any reason. You have the people who you want to know the secret there when you cast the spell. Even if Pettigrew is one of those people he wouldn't be able to tell Voldemort the secret because only the secret keeper can.

Voldemort wasn't one for taking chances. And as much as he respected Severus, he says clearly that only he can live forever. There is a good possibility that Voldemort would of disposed of Snape when the war was over anyway. Snape was an excellent lieutenant to have around during the war, but why keep someone that powerful around when you don't need him anymore. Just a threat to your power. And at that point Voldemort thought he had all but won the final battle.

All of that “can’t disapparate with the Fideleus charm on the house” is broken once Wormtail gave Voldemort their location. It states that since the charm was cast on the home only the secret keeper can give away its location. Voldemort could be right outside the home and be none the wiser of occupants bc of that charm. Once the secret keeper gives away the secret, all effects of the charm are gone

The same charm was in place in the Black home after it was made headquarters for the Order, but Fred and George were able to apparate around the house at will. Even if the charm prevented apparition into or out of a home, it would appear to be possible within the residence, so Lilly may not have been able to apparate away but she could have apparated to another room close to the door and ran away to a distance where the charms effects were no longer working on her then apparate anywhere she wanted.

I think dumbledore was much more sinister than people believe him to be. Oh I think he took trawloney very seriously. I’m sure he knew that he was going to get a prediction out of her. I can’t help but wonder why he didn’t just do the interview in a more secure location with you know who and his followers everywhere. Dumbledore isn’t a fool. He knew the prediction wasn’t for him. I think he knew it was meant for snape to trigger that prediction as it involved his love for lily potter. Maybe it was his love that triggered the prediction because snape is the main difference between Harry and Neville. Snape having a friendship with Harry’s mom.If snape had never heard of the prediction he would have never changed sides and cause the fall of he who must not be named. Why else would dumbledore do that interview in such a insecure location. I think dumbledore planned it all to have snape hear the story. To have the potters die. To have snape dedicate his love to lily potter to defeat the dark lord and he even knew it wasn’t enough to defeat the dark lord until all the horcruxes were destroyed. He knew Harry was a horcrux in the chamber of secrets when he explained to Harry that Voldemort transferred a part of his power (soul) into Harry. Everything went as he planned.
