I’m under the impression that Obi-Wan, Yoda and Luke disappeared into the cosmic force because they were ready, one with the force and chose to do so! Yoda didn’t merely die of old age, he vanished into the force when he felt it was the right time (being the Last Jedi at the time put the appropriate amount of weight onto Lukes’s shoulders, which helped him resist the Emperor and the seduction of the dark side). Obi-Wan wasn’t even touched by Vader’s saber, he has fulfilled his duty in protecting Luke and helping him make his first steps into a larger world. He knew that Yoda could still complete Luke’s training, that he could teach Luke even more than Obi-Wan himself could, so becoming a force ghost would enable him to communicate between the two and act as a guide to Luke - Vader never killed him, he disappeared moments before Vader struck. Also, Luke was never killed by Kylo Ren or his exhaustion due to his force projection ability - yes, sure, it was exhausting, but he still managed to climb onto the rock and take a few deep breaths before fading away. Luke disappeared because - again - he had fulfilled his purpose by passing on what he had learned (onto Rey) and by giving the galaxy hope, igniting the fire that will burn down the First Order. Luke had served his purpose and became one with the force. Qui-Gon never completed his training and Anakin never received it in the first place, but every being that dies, spiritually becomes a part of the cosmic force. It is quite possible that they show up anyway (Qui-Gon communicates with Yoda during the Clone Wars and teaches Obi-Wan, while Anakin appears in front of Luke) because the Force is reliant on them acting as messengers to the living. Qui-Gon served the purpose of teaching Yoda and Obi-Wan how to become one with the Force, while Anakin could either reassure Luke of the good he has done or serve another purpose down the line (either in Episode IX or in canon material, such as comics or novels). Well, that’s my take on the matter anyway.

By some statements in the clone wars, all become "one with the force" when they die, however, the technique allows the person to keep a sense of self after death rather than becoming one with a collective. Normally death is like a drop of water landing in the ocean, the drop is completely indistinct from the rest of the ocean. The force ghost training allows the training allows that drop to enter the ocean without instantly splitting aprt and spreading out, still part of the wter but distinct from it.

I think you have to be prepared for it. If your death comes as a surprise, then your body won't disappear, but if you give it a moment - Obi Wan, Yoda, and Luke all have that moment - they are accepted into the Force through their chosen path. I think subsequently appearing as Force Ghosts may actually be a different discipline. But it's hard to say, because there's definitely a sub plot where Qui Gon is the one who supposedly figured out the technique, and imparts it to Yoda from beyond the grave. I wonder if the LFL Story Group have this figured out.

This video gave me an idea!! I always considered it: Jedi disappear when they become one with the force by their own will. The EU wasn’t always like that, because in all pre-prequel stories when Jedi would die, they’d disappear. A perfect example of this would be Arca Jeth in Tales of the Jedi. But after the prequels it seemed more along the lines of what I first said, when Jedi give their wills over to the will of the force. Here’s the idea: what if Jedi bodies who don’t disappear are burned to be symbolic like the ones who do?

The training is called "the order of the Whills"...this was the training Qui Gon secretly learned and taught Yoda as a force ghost while Yoda was in exile and then gave the training instructions to Obi Wan before he went into exile..the training takes many years in isolation and allows the flesh and soul to be absorbed into the force at will.... Anakin became a force ghost without this training because he was very powerful but did not have his body absorbed

"Of course he disappeared the way all jedi do" Yeah, that never actually made sense to me, in Legends, if all Jedi disappeared, why would Vader who has killed so many be so confused when Ben disappeared?

I always imagined it like this: If you are relaxed and you know you will die soon, you become one with the Force by "disappearing" and if you are killed in a battle, or something which was unexpected, your body will not "disappear", becaude you weren't thinking about it and prepared for your death. Now you are like yeah Obi-Wan died in a battle and disappeared, but I feel he knew this was his last battle and was prepared for it and was able to disappear. Now it has nothing to do with becoming Force ghosts, as Qui-Gon didn't disappear but became a force ghost as we see in the Clone Wars series. And well Ani became a force ghost without training, maybe was just the Chosen one and would automatically be one as you die.

Going back into Legends, there's definitely something to it about even wanting to disappear. Like, a Jedi's spirit can decide to have their body fade well after they've died. When Darth Ceadus killed Mara Jade, she didn't fade away. She kept her body all the way up to her funeral and didn't fade until Jacen Solo arrived.
@johnlacosta68436 жыл бұрын
In legends, there is a bit more detail to the iffiness on becoming discorporeal: when Mara Jade dies, Lumiya comments on how she is surprised she didn’t become one with the force. But after Jacen comes to the mantel of Sith Lord, she disappears when both he attends her funeral, as a sign to Luke that Jacen was responsible. So there is an implication that the fading of the body in to the force also signifies something about their death. Luke, ObiWan and Luke were at peace, but Qui Gon and Mara died in combat.

I read something somewhere that was a conversation with Anakin and obi wan and Yoda during the literal last seconds of anakin's life. He basically accepted that he'll end up in whatever hell he was going to end up in but the voices of obi-wan and Yoda came to him just as he lost sight of Luke. They told him time is short but if he listens they can help him. He tried to apologize but they told him there will be time for that later. It then cuts to some time later and anakin was basically using all of his strength in the force to push his way through some metaphorical sea only to emerge next to the others on endor

In the movies, Qui-Gon was the only Jedi who didn’t know he was going to die. He anticipated/hoped to defeat Maul, but was struck down. Whereas Obi-Wan, Yoda, and even Luke knew they were going to die. Also, at the end of Revenge of the Sith, Yoda tells Obi-Wan that he has more training for him, as Qui-Gon has learned to communicate as a force ghost; suggesting he was the first to accomplish this.
@je24096 жыл бұрын
3:17 that's kinda the idea I had. Jedi like Mace Windu, Kit Fisto or Ki Adi Mundi are never seen as force ghosts cuz they were all brutally killed unlike yoda, obi wan or luke who all seemed pretty accepting and/or at peace with their deaths
@yeetchicken4206 жыл бұрын
My interpretation is very similar. Basically, if you completed the training, when you die you become a force ghost and your body fades. If you did some of the training, your body remains but you still have some kind of consciousness after death (perhaps the further you got in training the more awareness you have in the afterlife or better ability to interact with the physical world). If you didn't do the training at all, your body remains, and unless someone who is already a force ghost has your back then you will lose all consciousness.
@runningthemeta55706 жыл бұрын
I think the reason was like you said partially because qui gon hadn't fully completed his training to become a force ghost when he died, I think that is reason why we don't see qui gon as a full spirit like obi wan and Yoda except in the mortis arc where he was able to become a force ghost because of mortis connection to the force.

Or alternatively, “Why is Qui-Gon not Qui-Gone?” Yep. Went for the low-hanging fruit.
@BallinProductionDogs6 жыл бұрын
I think, obviously, Qui-gon’s body didn’t disappear because he didn’t complete his training. I also think Anakin always had the ability to become a force ghost because he’s the chosen one. I think the Mortis arc from the clone wars has something to do with this.
@Daniel-Strain6 жыл бұрын
Look at what that training entailed - as was alluded to in the Yoda episodes of 6th season Clone Wars. It dealt with facing the darkness within you. Seems consistent that Anakin would be able to do it, since the course of his life and final revelation happened to have achieved what the special training sought out to achieve. As for Qui-Gon, he had only begun to approach the first parts of the training, which is why he could only manifest as a voice (in Episode II) and his body didn't turn.
@justafaniv10976 жыл бұрын
I always figured that Qui-Gon got it mostly right, and was exploring the ability, but died before he could truly develop the skill to become one with the Force. As for Anakin, I would say it's because he was the chosen one, and brought balance to the force (well, for like 30 years). On top of that, he is also the inheritor of the Mortis Ones. They had a whole bunch of flunky powers and abilities, and since Anakin didn't die by that special blade, he got afterlife privileges (additionally, there are lots of hints that the Daughter still is around what with all the theories surrounding Ahsoka and the Convorees).
@KiinWahKrii6 жыл бұрын
I like to think of this training as two parts. One where you learn how to become one with the force at will, and the other wherre you learn how to keep your conscious self after death. Obviously Qui-gon had one part of it, and I have always felt Vader learned the same part at some point after his battle with Luke.

I think one major assumption is being made here, that becoming “one with the force” is the same as becoming a force ghost. If you look at them as two separate processes it begins to make a little easier to explain. Obi Wan, Yoda and Luke were all prepared to die so when they did, they disappeared. Becoming a force ghost must be a different thing altogether, though possibly related in the use of the cosmic force after death. Maybe it’s something that can be taught both before and after death, explaining Anakin. Separating the two procedures makes it a lot easier to reconcile the inconsistencies.
@AlexKnauth6 жыл бұрын
I think it's interesting that Qui-Gon "at first" could only appear years later, at incredibly force-powerful places like Mortis or Degobah, and he could barely be felt by Yoda at the Jedi Temple. But then as Yoda and Obi-Wan received more training in how to become a force-ghost, Qui-Gon could appear to them more easily. Or maybe it just took more time for Qui-Gon idk. I don't know what that means though. Maybe that's part of what happens when you don't fully complete that training, unless you're like Ani, and Yoda and Obi help.

I've always figured it was an Inner Peace Thing, even for legends. We were always getting passages about jedi opening themselves to the force when fighting or meditating, so Ive always assumed that when a jedi reached inner peace their whole being became one with the force. I also assume in canon and legends that, because sith and the dark side are perversions and/or corruptions of the force, that Sith cheat the system to maintain life after death, but it could also be a punishment for trying to do something like cheat death and live forever.

I have always wondered about this. Most honest answer I think is just simply that Lucas hadn’t worked out the lore properly at the time. even if there is an inconsistency with the plot in the movies, the lore will always make it right, so ya George probably didn't think about it while directing but there is always an answer that cant contradict any thing, it just hasn't been revealed yet in the new canon.

Something a lot of people forget, after the EU books started being published, is that Lucas said in the mid 80s that if he was ever able to complete the saga he was not going to be bound by anything in the EU. Lucas was willing to let other authors play in his universe, novels or comics the revenue source was good for funding his other projects, but he never considered any of the EU officially canonical.

I recall from TCW (I think in the bombing arc) that there is a place within the Jedi Temple used specifically for Funerals, where they placed the body of Jedi into a coffin of sorts, then a cover is placed on it and a beam of Light shoots out of the top of it. And there was a whole ceremony too. If they have all that, then it must be common place that very few Jedi do not dissolve into the Force. I know this answers nothing, but figured I'd add it into the discussion.

My only thought has to with the whole ritual associated with the Jedi having to burn the bodies of their fallen. I remember watching a New Hope and being really confused as to why the Jedi were burning Qui-Gon's body instead of burying it. I then thought that maybe the Jedi burned the bodies of their fallen so as to allow the spirits of the fallen to become one with the Force. Maybe this works for the new canon, since the only people we know who become force ghosts have "lost" their bodies and then are somehow free to become force ghosts. It could explain the origin of the ritual burning of Jedi bodies as well as explain a little about how force ghosts work.
@DailyDoseMain6 жыл бұрын
I think that becoming a force ghost isn't an ability that comes through training as Qui Gon says in the last arc of the Clone wars season 6 he was able to communicate with Yoda because he was chosen as was Yoda, I think the training we see Yoda do was just training to prepare him for ROS and empire, I also think this explains how Anikin became a force ghost without any training because he was a chosen one. Alex if you want to use this in a qna or a separate video you are welcome to do so

I pretty much agree. I think it has to do with training coupled with the state of mind that you enter prior to death. I think Anakin was helped along both by being the chosen one and by the ghosts of Obi-Wan, Yoda and Qui-Gon. We know that Qui-Gon was killed though he didn't instantly die. Likewise with Vader. I think that Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Luke made more of a conscious decision to relinquish their life. However I also can see in the future a strong Force user dying in battle and still becoming a ghost if they have trained for it. I think it has something to do with harmony with the Force and if the Force will allow you to return. If the Force wills it.

My interpretation is that a Jedi who completes the special training's body will vanish and they can appear as a force ghost to any force sensitive they choose very soon after their death. Qui-Gon never completed the training so his body didn't disappear but he was far enough along that he was still able to slowly return as a force ghost given time. As for Anakin I believe the exception is any jedi can appear as a force ghost to someone they are related to with or without the training. So only Luke, Leia, and Kylo have the ability to see Anakin's ghost no other force sensitive could.
@nickvinsable37986 жыл бұрын
Anakin & Vader were two separate entities within the same body. Vader’s body didn’t disappear & became a force ghost. But Anakin’s body disappeared on Mustafar & he became a force ghost when he resurfaced. You’re partially correct about Luke burning Vader’s armor, but everything that was left of Anakin disappeared & became one with the force; anything corrupted by the dark side/everything that is Vader is what was still in that suit.

As always we have to acknowledge that out of universe Star Wars has not been designed as a space fantasy universe with a hard magic system, thus we cannot expect nor demand things to be consistent. However Star Wars is greatly inspired by mythology and religion, I believe that the concept of liminality can help answer the question of why Qui-Gon's body doesn't disappear. Qui-Gon is "Standing at the threshold" when he dies and by ways we can't fathom he eventually manages to manifest his personality through the force. As for Darth Vader/Anakin somehow contradiciting what we know about force ghosts: George Lucas refering to Anakin's body is NOT the same as refering to his essence in the force "luminous beings are we not this crude matter". The new canon has gone to greath lengths to establish that (most of) Anakin Skywalker DOES in fact die after his battle with Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith, I'm thinking that most of Anakin's essence in the force also became trapped in a stage of liminality due to part of him and his body living on as Darth Vader, requiring the shell that was Darth Vader to die for Anakin to become one with the force.

Becoming one with the Force happens to all Jedi at death. However, manifesting who and what they were in life to the living is something that only a few had the ability to accomplish. I deal with the inconsistency of Anakin showing up at the end of ROTJ as a force ghost as merely a projection of what Luke's actions achieved, as provided by Obi Wan and Yoda to Luke. In Clone Wars we learn that Qui Gonn, while not disappearing at death, and his physical body being burned, is indeed a Force Ghost. He was able to manifest himself as he was in spirit to the living. In the novelization of Sith, Qui Gonn speaks to Yoda on Polis Massa, which results in Yoda telling Obi Wan about 'more training I have for you' which might deal directly with being able to manifest the self from spirit to the living, which results in the body literally disappearing at death.

On the topic of Anakin, in Legends Obi-Wan contacted Anakin soon after death and said he still had something to teach him before his mind faded completely into the force. (Life and Legend of Obi-wan Kenobi, and Rise and Fall of Darth Vader Books) I wouldn't be surprised if canon went along with that, at least partially. Jedi CAN learn how to become Force Ghosts retroactively after death as long as they are being taught quick enough. The Force Priestess Episodes from TCW gave me the impression that the Whills, Priestesses, or whoever is in charge of teaching people how to become Force Ghosts tend to be very picky about who they allow to have that knowledge, and usually only reveal it to someone who will have a legitimate purpose for using it. "He is to teach the one who will save the universe from a great imbalance." in Yoda's case. If that is the case they will likely have decided who they will teach years, decades, maybe even centuries before their death. It is just a matter of when they are available to be taught. Vader never was in a position where he could learn, as you said, and therefor the only time he could be trusted with the knowledge was after his death. Because they had already deemed Anakin worthy, they permitted him to be taught once he passed on but before merging completely with the Cosmic Force.
@roguestar86 жыл бұрын
I think Anakin becoming a Force-ghost has to do with the help of Yoda and Obi-Wan. Since he didn't have any training, he must have been helped. Qui-Gon was the first "modern" Jedi to chienne this status but he was only able to manifest himself as a voice for a long time, so it's kind of like his body stayed in the living Force but his spirit went to the cosmic Force. I kinda like how mysterious it is, it makes it fun to investigate ;)

I wonder if it’s something like a step that needs to be taken. The reason Yoda and Luke disappear is because they take that step. Yoda was holding out to train Luke and old age caught up to him. He felt himself dying and at the last minute before he died to stepped into the force. Same with Luke. He felt himself dying and steps into the force. I think body disappearing and force ghost are separate.
@bobbyvee2606 жыл бұрын
I've always assumed that a Jedi only because a complete force ghost and the body disappeared if the training was completed. Qui-Gon and Anakin didn't complete the training and so their bodies remained. That would mean that Luke did complete the training if that guess is true.
@kenlantz49066 жыл бұрын
I think you're right with the training aspect of it. Qui Gon didn't complete it so he was just a partial apparition. As with Anakin my stab in the dark (pun intended) is two pronged. First, since he was an occurrence of the Force manifested into life, him rejoining the force and on the side of good lets him become one. Second, since he had the knowledge, him living as Vader and then finally conquering that part of him was his test and trials to receive the right to be a ghost. But, doesn't explain why his body remained to be burned, unless the cybernetics were so ingrained that it was more machine than man. But, I'm probably wrong and we probably won't get any direct answer since Lucas isn't talking anymore. Just look forward to a more streamlined EU!

You might be thinking of The Courtship of Princess Leia, Chapter 2 where Luke finds a Jedi Master's room with a bunch of video cubes and slashed and burned clothes of the Jedi Master.

Question for the Q & A: How do you think if LucasFilms adds Mara Jade into canon plotline, how her story plays differently than in Legends? I think if Mara Jade gets added in, I think she would meet Luke during in that 6 year Exile after Kylo Ren destroyed the first Jedi Temple and she would be a single mother instead of being married and hold the secret child of Luke Skywalker to hid away from the First Order and both of them won't might appear in the Episode IX, but Episode X might.

I’m sure in Attack of the Clones, Dooku says to Obi wan that Qui Gonn was a Sith apprentice. Did I imagine that? If he was sith, maybe they don’t disappear. I dunno.

I believe Anakin was at peace when he died. He removed his mask because there was no stopping death and wanted to look up his son with his own eyes. He accepted death. And in his last moments he achieved the peace to help him become one with the force.

After watching episode 1, I assumed that obi-wan used time kinda technique as he prepared to die.

Cant believe they actually had to burn Liam Neeson to get that ending scene. Must've taken a lot of energy to stay in character

I think the training is important, but not the deciding factor. Don’t forget at the end of Return of the Jedi, Vader says Luke was right about there still being good in him. Now I’ve always personally believed that “from a certain point of view” Anakin and Vader were both figuratively and literally two very separate individuals, and when Anakins body became Vader through Palpatines dark side voodoo magic, Anakins spirit was left to linger aimlessly, though still very much attached to Vader, just suppressed, and was only set free at the time of Vaders death. Damn that’s a hell of a runon sentence. I apologize for that.

My theory is that becoming a Force Ghost is unrelated to a Jedi's body disappearing at death. Specifically, I think that the body disappears when someone accepts that they're about to die and does so at peace. This view is influenced strongly by the death of Nejaa Halcyon in the legends book I, Jedi. When Corran Horn sees Nejaa's death first in dreams and then when Elegos shares the Memnis of his death with him, we see that Nejaa knows that he is going to die, accepts it, and uses the last moments of his life to ensure that his allies survive the encounter. This theory fits with all of the disappearing Jedi in the movies and Yoda is the only one who disappears at death without clearly sacrificing his life to save someone else. Obi-Wan sacrifices his life to allow Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie , and the droids to escape, Vader Sacrifices his Life to save Luke from Palpatine, and Luke exerts himself to the point of death to save what's left of the Resistance.

On this subject, I'm always reminded of Dave Filoni's incredibly vague response to a guy asking "who taught Vader to become a force ghost?" Watch it here: www.starwars.com/video/the-lost-missions-q-and-a-force-ghosts Leeland Chee gives his thought right at the end which is probably the closest we'll get to knowing about how some aspects of becoming a force ghost works, you know, beyond the method Qui-Gon teaches Obi-Wan.

I don't really think there is a necessary connection between your body fading away when Jedi die and you being able to come back as a Force Ghost. You could achieve the "peace of mind" state or whatever to become one with the Force after you die too, I think. We don't know how the afterlife within the Force works anyway.
@Bigbluedragon96 жыл бұрын
I think it has to do with acceptence of the death and maybe Vader didn't let go and Qui-Gon as well. But they become still force ghost because there is no Body left to be attached to.

My hypothesis is that the Original Trilogy was made during the, "Time Bandits," "Willow," "E.T." "The Dark Crystal," "Legend," and, "Labyrinth." era. A time in which, "high fantasy," films were in their infancy, and at their best. And they quite naturally shared many commonalities, like the use of practical puppets and dwarfs, and fantasy tropes like a body magically disappearing after death. Of course, that's just a couple examples of shared elements that seemed to cut across many films being made at that time. (if you don't know what I'm talking about, you're probably not old enough to remember. Just Google; "80's fantasy movie tropes." or something like that.) I know it's a boring, out-of-universe answer, nevertheless it seems like by the late 90's when the prequels were being made, alot of that, "magic," that we associate with those early fictional adventure stories had long since died. Something like a simple kiss or a song lyric seemingly no longer evokes any feelings even approaching, "magical." Over-saturation has unfortunately transformed the profound into cliché. And sadly, most of the subtlety and innocence in the world is LONG gone. (Geez! I sound like I'm narrating a holiday special about Santa dying because kids don't believe in the spirit of Christmas anymore lol sorry.)

A, "chosen one," is another story trope highly utilized in high fantasy/science fiction and adventure movies. (I'm just tacking it on down here instead of editing the other comment)

This is a theory...... Quigon Jinn discovered the ability to become a Force Ghost, but no-one else had done so yet, and he was not prepared. Without help or experience from other Jedi Force Ghosts, he doesn't become as powerful as could have been had he been completely absorbed into the Force. Once a Force Ghost, he could assist other Force-users transcend if he wished to. He helped Ben Kenobi, and Yoda who between them had enough power to pull Anakin in. Anakin couldn't have become a Force Ghost any other way, and was less powerful than Yoda or Ben Kenobi, but more powerful than Quigon Jinn allowing him to be easily visible. The more Force Ghosts there are, the collectively more powerful they become, eventually being able to manipulate things in the real-world.

All the Jedi who were killed by order 66 didn't turn into force ghosts, so either its done for plot convenience, or only certain Jedi can achieve that (although there was never really -as far as I can remember- any explicit reason given as to why some can and others can't aside from this "special" training thing)

We still don't know all the training Anakin went through as Vader, he could have studied a form of it trying to speak to Padme.

Maybe some of the untold training Anakin receive from Palpatine about preventing death linked in with what QuiGon was learning and was the reason that they both eventually became ghosts but didn’t lose their bodies? I mean if other Jedi knew this power before them then where are the other ghosts, but there are dead Sith Spectors right. Maybe the training was dark side derived but Yoda and QuiGon (after death) found a way around it?
@jacobtaylor97226 жыл бұрын
Also also, Darth Vader is doing some freaky after death resurrection-ish stuff with Padme in the new comics so the afterlife cant be that mysterious to them. I mean they must have some concept of it. Not to mention if you can talk face to face with a ghost then they might have had a conversation about what the whole process is about? Maybe?

If I had to guess (based on knowledge gleaned from A Certain Point of View) Anakin was only able to appear due to the efforts of Obi-Wan and Yoda assisting him in doing so.
@DoucheLaGargen6 жыл бұрын
From a certain point of view said it hurt for Qui Gon to visit Obi Wan, where as Yoda and Obi Wan just rock up all the time. Maybe that is because Qui Gon never finished the training. Maybe a reason as to why Anakin hasn't shown up to Ben to say stop being a twat is because he can't properly?
