One of the Dark Horse comics had a good idea. A Jedi Master surmised that the hidden Sith Lord was a member of the Senate. He thought it would be a good idea to surreptitiously do a midi-chlorian check on all the Senators. Before taking his idea to the Jedi Council, this Master thought it best to discuss the matter with his good friend in the Senate. Three guesses as to who that Senator was; the first two don't count. Needless to say, that said Master and Padawan were immediately sent on an emergency action (before taking the idea to the Jedi Council) and killed the Separatists.

The main reason I love Darth Bane & his story is because that means Darth Sidious is the culmination of a 1,000 years(?) of "forced" Sith "evolution"! (Executing the FINAL move in a grand plan that also started 1,000 years ago. A plan that was constantly being "adjusted" & refined.) Basically making the OT's biggest baddie even COOLER.
